Wallpaper disappears when leaving sleep

I have a new MacBook Pro (late 2011) with Lion. It is closed and attached to an external monitor.
Whenever I wake the Mac from sleep, the wallpaper is replaced with a grey background.
Can anyone suggest a fix?

Interesting and where to begin? I do not see anything in the plist that looks like it would create this glitch however lets eliminate the possibility.
Move to the desktop the com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist and relaunch PhotoBooth.
Found in your user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist

  • Time Machine backup disappears when iMac sleeps

Tried finding this topic but could not find the specifics. I have an Intel iMac running 10.6.7 and I use a Mercury enclosure with a Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA for Time Machine backup, connected with FireWire. Every time my Mac goes to sleep overnight, the next morning, the Time Machine icon disappears from the desktop. It's been disconnected, because when I run Check Time Machine, the log reads thusly:
<<Thu Apr 21 10:29:30 com.apple.backupd-auto Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
Thu Apr 21 12:30:05 [0x0-0x2d22d2].backupd-helper Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume
    >>
Occasionally I'll get the error message on the Mac that a device has been "improperly disconnected" but most of the time when it sleeps the TM drive icon just goes away (even tho the backup drive is still on).
Any ideas? Can I fix this or have to live with it? Are there alternatives to TM that may work better?
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.
    Best,
    Mike

I had the same problem as Bru-Hed, but with a Samsung G3 Station 1 TB with USB-connection. After waking up the MAC the message "improperly disconnected" appeared. Was happy with the solution you gave and changed the power save settings accordingly, the drive holds its power, but....... things did not change. Switching off the MAC and restarting gives no problems with the back-up drive, but after waking up I have to reinstall the back-up drive every time by disconnecting and connecting the USB-connector. After choosing the drive again in Time Machine, everything works properly until the next time the MAC goes asleep......
Any other solution to this problem ?

  • Wallpaper disappears when I bring up Photobooth from my Apps?

I'm trying to figure out how to fix this glitch I've been experiencing recently with my Wallpaper/background. Whenever I bring up Photo Booth from my applications, my wallpaper disappears to be replaced by a solid blue background. It's only started happening a couple days ago, and I've only experienced this problem with Photo Booth, none of my other applications. Any ideas what the problem is???
Oh, P.S.- Photo Booth still works just fine.

  • E3000, USB NAS storage - disk disappears when unit sleeps the drive

Working to get network attached storage working on my new E3000.  Have Western Digital My Book drive and the unit has a feature where the disk goes into a sleep mode when not used.
Appears that when the disk does this when attached to the E3000, the router thinks the disk is gone. Trying to connect to the drive from the network does not seem to wake up the storage.
Like to be able to save power and wear by not spinning the disk all the time....
    Firmware 1.0.03
    Any suggestions?

the issue is the drive is going to sleep and the router can not detect it to wake it up. western digital has stated (based from others who have contacted WD support) the drive is not compatible with NAS'ed routers.
i dont know about WD but seagate has software in the drive to disable the sleep state..
and you would rather have the drive SPINNING rather than sleeping/spinning/sleeping as this causes MORE WEAR vs. having it spin constant.
i have a couple buffalo drives 500gb, and had one on an e2 and e3 and now an e42(which ive now added a 2TB seagate go flex drive--no issues btw...) and never had them spin down and give the error.
so perhaps since you can not disable the sleep mode on the WD, and that WD itself has stated thru internet users/google searchers, that this drive is not a good fit.. perhaps you should replace the drive.

  • Wallpaper disappears when switching users

When my wife logs in if I am already logged in, she gets a black desktop with no wallpaper. If she is logged in and I log in, I get the same. Is anybody else experiencing this kind of issue? I'm running 10.9.1 on a 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7 iMac.

First you posted this to the Macbook Pro Notebook forum. I'll ask it to be moved to the iMac forum.
Could be you have selected background wall paper that is located in specific Username folders and for some reason they are not connecting to that specific folder when both users are logged in.
If your wallpaper is a picture stored in a iPhoto library folder/file try copying it, exporting it, to the default wallpaper folder used for each user.
I have seen this before where a user was referencing a image in iPhoto that sometimes didn't show properly. Once they copied that image to the default wallpaper folder it worked just like any other file in that default location.

  • Disappearing cursor after sleeping for the day

I just bought a 20" ACD and use it with my 12" PowerBook Rev. C. When I take my PB home for the night, I put it to sleep and then unplug everything from its ports. When I wake it up to work at home, it wakes immediately, but the mouse cursor has disappeared. If I move my finger on the trackpad, the computer responds, but without a cursor, i.e. I can activate menus, switch windows, etc. but only if I am lucky enough to land on that part of the screen. Logging out doesn't bring the cursor back, but restarting does. The same thing happens in the morning when I bring my sleeping PB back to the office and plug in to the ACD, this time using the external USB mouse to wake up. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

An update: To eliminate the disappearing cursor problem, I now:
    - Plug in the display connection while the computer is sleeping,
    - Open the PB,
    - Plug in the USB hub connection,
    - Close the PB lid to turn off the built in LCD, then use the USB mouse to wake the system.
When leaving the ACD at the end of the day, I:
    - Unplug the USB hub connection,
    - Open the PB,
    - Tell the computer to sleep,
    - Unplug the display connection,
    - Shut the PB lid.
    No more disappearing cursors.

  • Does wifi sleep when iPad sleeps?

If you leave wifi on and you put your ipad to sleep, does wifi power down -- or does it continue to drain battery?
In other words, am I correct in assuming that if I want to cut down on battery use, I should turn wifi off every time I put the pad to sleep?
(I've got the iPad 3G, but use it in airplane mode with wifi turned on... Unless I put it to sleep in which case I turn wifi off... Am I doing all of this unnecessarily?)

I have the 3G ipad but only use wifi, haven't activated a data plan. I notice that my ipad handles wifi unlike any of my other devices. They, imac, MB Pro ipod touch, iphone, drop their wifi when in sleep but the ipad never drops it. I check this by going into Airport utility on my mac, I use an Airport Extreme base station that all my devices connect to by wifi. Airport Utility has an Advanced section that shows all wireless devices connected to the network and their signal strength, noise and transmission rate. My ipad is always showing as connected, asleep or not. The other devices will drop out of the displayed graph when they go into sleep but not the ipad. So however wifi is implemented on the ipad it's very different from all the other devices. This may be one reason why I've never had the issue of the ipad losing its wifi when coming out of sleep. Actually the only wifi problem I've ever had is that every now and then the wifi antenna symbol will completely disappear triggering an alert that says connecting for a few seconds when the antenna reappears and the connection is made again. Weird but it happens very infrequently.

  • Why does the tab bar on my iPad 2 disappear when I swipe down? How can I lock it in place?

Why does the tab bar on my iPad 2 using IO8 disappear when I swip down? Its annoying. I have to tap the top of the screen to view my open tabs.
why did Apple switch the position of the bookmarks icon and the favorites icon. Now I tap the wrong one.

There isn't a setting to stop the tab bar automatically hiding (or I haven't found one), and as to why the icons were moved I don't think that Apple have said. If you want to leave feedback for Apple then you can do so here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • Documents uploaded to icloud disappear when I turn off the IPAD

documents uploaded to icloud disappear when I turn off the IPAD,I can see the documents only when icloud is open on the PC

When you turn off any device, it will disconnect from the internet. My sense is that you're not quite explaining what's happening. Do you mean that when you turn it back on again it doesn't automatically reconnect? Do you mean the if it just goes to sleep (as opposed to being powered off) that it switches from WiFi to cellular? Or are you saying that you think that when you turn off the iPad, the router disconnects?
If you're trying to say that the iPad disconnects from WiFi when asleep and switches to cellular, the solution is to keep it plugged into a power source.
    Best of luck.

  • Mouse laggy or unresponsive after leaving sleep

Sometimes when my MBP leaves sleep the mouse (trackpad) jumps randomly around the screen. I've discovered that enabling the wifi causes it to be better behaved, but it remains slightly jerky and laggy. If I turn the wireless back off, it will jump around the screen again until I manage to re-enable the wireless.
Disabling/Enabling bluetooth doesn't affect this behavior. top doesn't show anything using more than 5% of the CPU, iostat doesn't show massive amounts of transfer, lots of RAM in use, but a lot is still free too. Logging out and logging back in doesn't fix it. There isn't much running it could be since I just logged out and logged back in to try to fix it.
One interesting note is that the screensaver visualization is also jumpy and slow.
Messages like these also appear in the system log:
    IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change X: oldDx=6 dx=-1500
    IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change Y: oldDy=6 dy=-1500
    IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change X: oldDx=0 dx=0
Any ideas? I do not have the iStat widget that is repeatedly blamed in other threads.

    NUXI,
I just got bitten by the same symptom. I'm beginning to think there's some problem with sleep and my MBP. I've had quite a few instances where it hasn't waken from sleep completely.
I'm certain it entered sleep since the LED was pulsing as normal - then when I lift the lid - the sleep LED goes off - but the display never comes back. I've listened carefully to the bottom of the unit and I can hear the HD spinning again - and both fans spin up - but the display doesn't start up. There is no backlight and no image either.
After that - the machine never seems right again other than rebooting. I was able to "wake" the screen by using another mac to "share the screen" - once I logged in over the network - the screen woke up the rest of the way.
Just like you - CPU usage is less than 5% - but the trackpad just doesn't respond smoothly. I have nothing connected - bluetooth is off, wifi is my network, but the track pad just became unusable. The keyboard did seem to be responsive - the shortcut key for logging out worked pretty much instantly - but the trackpad was useless...
    Tons of <pre>2/3/08 8:46:46 PM kernel IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change Y: oldDy=-2 dy=264 </pre> messages - between 30 to 60 per second were logged...
It seems to me that something else was dragging the system down and this was just a side effect of the polling mechanism not getting input in a timely manner....

  • Pictures in iPhoto 6 library flash and then disappear but leave a box

    OSX 10.5.8 iPhoto 6
pictures in library flash and then disappear but leave an empty box

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Cursor disappears when using Photoshop, anyone else?

My cursor disappears when using Photoshop, I have to leave the program to get it back. Happens constantly since installing 10.8.3.
Was fine for years, until I upgraded my OS

    NEW, 1ST TIME POST
I'd like to see some real effort on the part of Apple to 1) address the issue and 2) post a fix.
I've been using the same equipment for several years (27" iMac and a Wacom Intous4).  Everything was lovely until 'upgrading' to the latest OS…  The cursor dissappears at will.  I can NOT predict the event, only that I have only found it occurring in Photoshop.
    Contacted Wacom.  No help there.
I got VERY tired of having to close PS to get the cursor back.  My tablet is hard-wired and my keyboard is an Apple wireless.  Of course, w/o a cursor, how are you going to click on anything…  Keyboard worked, but not the Wacom.  Finally got out my wireless [Apple] mouse, fired it up, and used it as a 'backup' (for crashing my way out of PS).  The mouse never interferred with operation.  THOUGHT it was a Wacom problem, because I've yet to create the event with a normal mouse.  I admit I rarely, RARELY use a mouse.  Seems that I can't draw with a rock…
Aggravated by the lack of interest across the board, I discovered quite by accident one day a work-around: flip to a different desktop and then right back.  Voila.  Cursor is back.  I've got 4 desktops available, so it is a quick CTL + arrow.  My work-around works for me WITHOUT FAIL.  Pay attention Apple/Adobe/Wacom.  Apparently something here is refreshing whatever and solving the problem.  Until the next time, of course.
Apple - Adobe - Wacom, please don't think we're 'satisfied' and we'll fix it in the NEXT mulit-thousand dollar computer/OS/tablet purchase.  I love the products, but with this latest OS, you have a perfect storm of bugs (don't ask me about dropping the Internet DAILEY, s-l-o-w to non-existent blutooth connectivity, new 3D weird actions or [insert drumroll] 'THE CLOUD').
Call any of those listed and get ready for a raft of denial and finger-pointing.  I admit, you quickly find yourself somewhere like the Phillipines or India, trying to talk to someone who can't converse with you in you own language, but that is NOT the fault of us, the end-users.
Finally: 'Caps lock'?  Please.  Give the guy SOME credit.  Maybe the light was burnt out on the keyboard?
C'mon.  Get with it guys!!  Denial mixed with 'passing the buck' is not an answer.  And you want MORE MONEY out of me?????
I agree with lkooz, break out the Beseler — I'll get the trays ready…

  • My desktop photo disappears when I reboot iMac, replaced with Mac default image. please help?

My desktop photo disappears when I reboot iMac...replaced with default apple image. does anyone know a fix?

First, try to delete the Desktop settings file. First, open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart your computer. Finally, change the wallpaper and see if it stays after restarting your computer
If that does not work try
open the Applications Support folder and then look for the Dock folder and open that. There are two files, one of which is "desktoppicture.db". Move this file to the trash and securely delete it. Restart the computer. A new "desltoppicture.db" will be created on startup.
Finally, reset your desktop picture again using System Preferences.

  • Table number xrefs disappear when roundtripping the XML doc back to FM

I'm using FM 7.2p158 running on Windows XP on a Dell Optiplex GX520 with 1GB RAM. I've converted my legacy FM docs to structured FM, but my (CALS-formatted) table number xrefs disappear when I roundtrip the XML docs back to FM. How can I remedy this?
Initially, I used my own conventions to name the table part elements as I have about 10-15 specific table types and I used those Table Tag names as table elements names (Invisible2, Invisible4, StepTable, ...), so I had 10-15 elements that were true "is fm table element" types in the EDD, DTD, and R/W rules. The table number xrefs worked as they should after roundtripping FM-XML-FM and the tables' shading, ruling, and Table Tags were correct.
I consulted our XSLT developer for proper browser display of the XML files, and he suggested that I should use the CALS table model. I studied the Struct Dev Gd, then I searched this forum for postings on CALS tables and related topics and used suggestions offered by many of you good folks to create an EDD, DTD, and R/W rules to that end.
I've run some tests using many iterations of my files (both CALS and non-CALS types) to roundtrip the FM files, but I cannot get the xrefs of the table number from the CALS-version table title element to display when I roundtrip the XML doc and open it in FM. I get this:
-- In the XML doc text opened in FM, instead of "Table 1-1" for the xref, it leaves a blank space (although the source numbered table title is there).
-- In the Structure View of the same XML doc, I see the following:
    - The CROSSREF element text says WHITESPACE.
    - Both the CROSSREF element and its source element continue to have the (matching) "Idref" and "Id" number displayed in this view.
    - The Idref attribute is disconnected from the CROSSREF element.
    - The "table" element is disconnected from its container element (TableAnchor).
Once I apply the File/Import/Element Definitions command in the XML doc in FM, the XML becomes valid and both the CROSSREF Idref attribute and the table element are reconnected, but my xref of the table number is still WHITESPACE.
The XML-converted doc source text reads:
If you're using WebDrive, you will want to use the options shown
in [CROSSREF Idref = "BEHJCAJB" format = "Table Number"/] on the [IndexEntry

The CROSSREF Idref "BEHJCAJB" is [WHITESPACE] in the Structure View, so it's a blank space within the actual text in FM.
I have excerpts from my EDD, DTD, and R/W rules that I can post, but would make this even more lengthy. (Sorry about the current length.) What do I need to change to make the xrefs work when I roundtrip the files?
