Wallpaper issues under openbox

I know how to set the wallpaper (in a number of ways, even). That's not the issue.
I'm running Arch under VirtualBox, with the guest additions installed. This allows magically setting the resolution when I change the size of the virtual screen. Unfortunately, this does not update my wallpaper's aspect ratio, so the wallpaper tiles rather than zooming to fit. How do I fix this?
For reference, I'm setting my wallpaper with
feh --bg-max ~/wallpaper-377161.jpg
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, and thanks in advance.

Hi guys, this is my first post here so be nice!
I've been agonising over this small detail for a few days now, whilst trivial I NEED feh to reapply my wallpaper when I resize my VB window - as Deltadesu mentions above feh applies the wallpaper based on the 'current' screen size, so any resolution > than the current resolution, the wallpaper tiles.
I have read about calling feh from VBoxRandR.sh - but as this doesnt exist any longer I'm stuck!
Cheers in advance :]

  • Annoying desktop wallpaper issues

    Lately i'm having issues with my wallpaper on my macbookpro. The state of my wallpaper now is white, just white nothing else. I try and apply a new image but it doesnt seem to do anything. Whenever i reboot my mbp, my old wallpaper images displays for a couple of seconds until osx is fully loaded but then goes back to white. I use a secondry monitor as well, but it displays images, just not the screen on my mbp. The mmp works perfecly, nothing else wrong with it (touch wood) just this really annoying desktop wallpaper issue!
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Ok it seems to of been a wee app called instantshot that was the culprit.

  • Same issues under 10.5.2 perhaps more.

    Still having the same issues under 10.5.2. Graphical artifacts (desktop/dock/frontrow) and the odd disk permission repairs reports. I did a clean (erase and install) of leopard and updated to 10.5.2 with the combo update. Is this a ATI driver issue? Never had any of this under Tiger. Is there anything in addition I should do to try and correct these things? or just wait for further updates from apple/
    Thanks.

    Video out under 10.5.2 works fine for me and for a colleague of mine with a more recent MacBook Pro. I'd wager it's a problem with your Leopard install, not a universal one.
    Also, FYI, Apple doesn't read these forums; they're just for user-to-user help. If you want to leave MacBook Pro feedback for Apple, do so here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
    But again, I do not believe yours is a universal issue. We'll be happy to help troubleshoot though. What do you mean the image is "unstable"? Could you take a digital photograph of the external monitor's screen and upload it somewhere?

  • VLC really looks ugly under Openbox (Qt related I think)

    Hello Archers
    I'm still trying Openbox, and I've met a problem with VLC media player
    It really looks UGLY under Openbox, I've searched a little bid, and found that VLC use Qt
    I thing that it's THE problem I must have an ugly qt thême set by default...
    I googled that, I found something called "Qgtkstyle" and "Qtconfig" but any of them are in the repo
    I would like to be able to set a cute qt theme, but I do not want to install too many apps from KDE (I'm very limited by my HDD (2GB))
    Thank you

    Qtconfig is in the package qt. The style of qt apps is in /usr/lib/qt/plugins/styles. Look this http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=90720. I think that  you can copy the style from some installation with kde.

  • Issues mounting USB devices in Thunar under Openbox

    Basically, whenever I attempt to mount a USB device in Thunar, I get a message that says:
    Failed to mount "4.0 GB Filesystem

    My .xinitrc looks like:
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-session
    It works when I use GDM to start openbox, but when I use slim, it fails no matter what I try. If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

    Check for *.pacnew files in '/etc/pam.d/' (specifically /etc/pam.d/slim.pacnew).

  • Setting wallpaper/bmpanel in openbox? [SOLVED]

    I am on my first succesful HD install of Arch wirh Openbox right now and I have been documenting some of the things that are giving me issues. If you are curious about how I went about with my installation you can check this thread out:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=76315
    One of the issues Im having is with themeing and autostart programs. I did a little research and found that in order to have, for instance, my bmpanel and desktop wallpaper start up with x I had to make an autostart.sh under my ~/.config/openbox/ and add this within:
    # Run the system-wide support stuff
    . $GLOBALAUTOSTART
    # Programs to launch at startup
    nitrogen /media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
    xcompmgr -c -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55 &
    # SCIM support (for typing non-english characters)
    export LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.utf8
    export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM
    export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
    export QT_IM_MODULE=scim
    scim -d &
    # Programs that will run after Openbox has started
    (sleep 2 && bmpanel arch) &
    So thats what I make it look like. I have nitrogen and bmpanel (with arch theme) installed and working correctly. The problem is that when i startx and the script runs, it just opens nitrogen with no images selectable. Also bmpanel does start with arch theme but it is not transparant like in the photo available where I downloaded it.
    I do have composting available as I have my nvidia drivers installed and i checked that it is working in the terminal, but I am at a loss as to why they arent working correctly. I have checked the documentation for this and found it a little lacking? Anyone know where to go from here?

    Don't know bmpanel (never liked it myself), but the
    problem with nitrogen is that in order to set wallpaper from the
    commandline you have to include a switch. Chose whichever of the
    following best suits the image in question.
    nitrogen --set-best
    /media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
    nitrogen --set-centered
    /media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &

    nitrogen --set-tiled
    /media/vault/Wallpapers/107320-Tranquility-1680.jpg &
    Or, if you rely on nitrogen's GUI wallpaper interface, you can just
    use the following:
    nitrogen --restore &
    This will set the desktop to the last image you selected via the GUI
    interface.
    Then if you want to get fancy, you can add a menu item to your openbox
    menu to launch the nitrogen selector:
    <item label="Wallpaper">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>nitrogen ~/wallpaper</execute>
    </action>
    </item>
    Also never used bmpanel, so can't be of help there. Tint2 and pypanel
    both have nice transparency.

    I would like to be able to see somewhere the list of issues which have been accepted by Tech Support as problems and are under investigation for correction in future releases.
    Despite all care taken to stay as long as I could in LR 1.2, which after few bypasses worked fine for me, I migrated to 1.3.1 and discovered I had missed a couple of problems (Quick Develop Reset no longer works in 1.3/1.3.1, nor does flag as rejected with filter set to Pick and unflagged only).
    Reading the posts made by users having the problem, I am unable to find out if Tech Support are aware of this, nor if they have accepted the problems described as issues to be fixed.

    I am sure ADobe knows of the Reset Problem. Time will tell if it gets fixed with the next Version release.
    I don't know about the other Pick/Reject issue.

  • IPhoto '09 issues under Lion

    I'm running iPhoto '09 (8.1.2) under Lion (10.7.2).  I've been trying to make a calendar, but iPhoto seems to have issues.  I started by duplicating a calendar from last year and trying to apply a new theme.  This causes iPhoto to become unresponsive until I click on a different calendar in the 'Keepsakes' list on the left panel.  Additionally, adding photos to the project often doesn't work - I drag photos to the project but they don't appear in the photo list when I open the project.
    Does iPhoto '09 have any limitations under Lion?  I would upgrade to iPhoto '11 but the calendar theme choice is much more limited than iPhoto '09.
    thanks!
    Dan

    No there are no specific issues with iPhoto 09 and 10.7
    Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
    (On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
    (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
    For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Curious key binding issue with Openbox

    I'm learning about setting up key bindings for actions in Openbox. One of things that I wanted to do is to have the root-menu and client-list-combined-menu set to keyboard shortcuts. This part I borrowed from a post in the forums and it does exactly what it's supposed to do:
    <!-- Keybindings for root menus -->
    <keybind key="W-z">
    <action name="ShowMenu">
    <menu>client-list-combined-menu</menu>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    <keybind key="W-x">
    <action name="ShowMenu">
    <menu>root-menu</menu>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    The issue comes when I don't want to select something in the menu. Esc will clear it just like it should. But, The Caps Lock key on my system which is remapped to Esc won't. It works like an escape key everywhere except here. Any ideas on why?

  • Active Directory credential caching issues under OS X 10.5.5 (and 10.5.4)

    We are experiencing issues with cached credentials and login delays using the Active Directory DirectoryServices plugin under 10.5. In our case, the plugin works fine as long as the system is on one of our networks, and credential caching works when the system is disconnected. Everything is repeatable, scripted and reasonably well tested. We're pretty happy with how it's working on-site. Once a system leaves our network however, as laptops tend to do, it is not possible to log in without a massive delay. Looking into the issue, I have determined that the following contribute to the problem:
    1) There are 9 active directory servers in our "/Library/Preferences/DirectoryServices/ActiveDirectoryDynamicData.plist" file.
    2) The timeout appears to be 90 seconds, according to the string value of the LDAP Connection Timeout element in "/Library/Preferences/DirectoryServices/ActiveDirectory.plist".
    The login delay does seems to coincide with the value of 90 seconds multiplied by the number of AD servers, about 13 1/2 minutes. Changing the value of the LDAP Connection Timeout does not seem to resolve the issue, even after a reboot. Moving the ActiveDirectoryDynamicData.plist file out of the way (to prevent the system from contacting any AD servers) does not seem to resolve the issue either. I'd like the ability to force cached credentials without the AD delay. Is this possible to change this value without rebooting, or at least without patching the binaries?
    I am currently testing on a MacBook Air with 10.5.5, and the following procedure was used from the command line to configure AD (note that you'd need to replace the AD username, OU, and domain values):
    dsconfigad -a `hostname -s` -u "ad-admin-user-replaceme" -ou "OU=Whatever, OU=You, OU=Have" -domain=example.com -mobile enable -mobileconfig disable -useuncpath disable
    dscl -q localhost -create /Search SearchPolicy ds AttrTypeStandard:CSPSearchPath
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/DirectoryService "Active Directory" "Active"
    plutil -convert xml1 /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/DirectoryService.plist
    Reboot and all seems to be working for us, except when the systems leave our network.
    Note that the last command (plutil) is not strictly necessary, but the DirectoryService utility seems to write the file in xml1 format, so this makes things consistent with what Apple is doing and hopefully less likely to break anything.

    As silly as it seems to respond to one's own posts, I think I've found a solution. Using the first set of commands at the bottom of this post, I disable Active Directory authentication (and ensure that LDAPv3 is disabled as well). This seems to still allow for cached credentials to function, since AD is still in the search path. Although there is still a rather long 2 minute initial delay on the MacBook Air, it seems to work and is nowhere near 13 1/2 minutes. Interestingly enough, it seems to work with little delay on a test Powerbook G4 using the same baseline configuration with little to no delay.
    My plan is to push this out through my update mechanism as a cron job every 5 minutes, with a script that detects whether it's on one of our networks. The cron job will also be run on bootup so systems initially booted shouldn't need to suffer a 13.5 minute delay. This could be made better with a mechanism that could launch a script when the network interface came up or went down, I'll look at launchd for clues. If you have any comments feel free to reply...
    Commands executed on networks which cannot access our AD servers:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/DirectoryService "Active Directory" "Inactive"
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Set \"LDAP Connection\ Timeout\" 0" /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/ActiveDirectory.plist
    Commands executed when a system is back on one of our networks:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/DirectoryService "Active Directory" "Active"
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Set \"LDAP Connection\ Timeout\" 90" /Library/Preferences/DirectoryService/ActiveDirectory.plist

  • DragManager issues under AIR

    The following help documentation for Flex 4 does not appear to be valid when running under AIR (Flex 4.1).  Changes to these entries in the style sheet appear to have no effect. Is this a known issue, and/or is there a workaround?  I want all of the drag cursors to be mapped to the standard arrow cursor, and want to handle all other feedback via the drag proxy and the drop indicators.
    Another (seemingly well known) issue in AIR is that the imageAlpha parameter of DragManager.doDrag() is simply ignored. Previous queries suggest that it was hardcoded to alpha 1.0 (fully opaque), whereas now it seems to be hardcoded to 50 percent. I actually want the previous behavior of fully opaque. Is there a workaround for this issue as well? Most (all?) of the posts on this issue appear to have gone unanswered.
    Thanks for any assistance!
    From the docs:
    Example: Setting the cursor styles of the DragManager
    The DragManager uses styles to control the display of the different cursors used during the drag and drop operation, such as the move and copy cursors. The cursors are defined as symbols in the Assets.swf file in the flexInstallDir\frameworks\projects\framework\assets directory.
    By default, Flex defines the cursor styles as if you had used the following type selector in your application:
    <fx:Style>
        @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx";
        mx|DragManager
            copyCursor: Embed(source="Assets.swf",symbol="mx.skins.cursor.DragCopy");
            defaultDragImageSkin: ClassReference("mx.skins.halo.DefaultDragImage");
            linkCursor: Embed(source="Assets.swf",symbol="mx.skins.cursor.DragLink");
            moveCursor: Embed(source="Assets.swf",symbol="mx.skins.cursor.DragMove");
            rejectCursor: Embed(source="Assets.swf",symbol="mx.skins.cursor.DragReject");
    </fx:Style>

    If I recall correctly, CS3 didn't have the option in the new document screen.  I could be mistaken here though .  Try creating a new AS3 document and change the publish settings to target Adobe AIR instead of Flash Player.  Then run the commands and see if you receive the same error.

  • "Safari can't find the server" - connection issues under Lion

    Hi there,
    Since upgrading to Lion, Safari has been displaying this odd and annoying behaviour, where, for some links to some web resources (like maybe 2 clicked links out of 10), it throws up a grey error page telling me it can't find the server (screenshot below):
    Normally, this error would be evidience of an intenet connection issue (but it isn't). If I immediately try to find the same resource via another browser (Firefox or Chrome), those other browsers navigate to the site absolutely fine. Although, occasionally (though with less frequency) I'm also getting a similar "Can't find stuff" error with Chrome too.
    In the Safari address bar (is this significant?) there isn't even a URL, but a file path to file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources... what does that mean?
    Hints from other threads would indicate that this is a Firewall issue, or maybe there's another third-party app causing problem, rather than a problem with Safari under Lion specifically.
    But I'm really bugged and irrittate by this. Anyone had a similar experience? Anyone with any ideas? How might I go about finding out what's causing this and fixing it?
    Best wishes,

    It's most likely a problem with corrupted files in the Safari Cache or corrupted cookies.
    Go to Safari menu bar
    Click on Safari
    Click "Empty Cache"
    Restart Safari
    If the problem persists...
    Go to Safari -> Preferences
    Go to privacy
    Click "Remove All Website Data"
    Restart Safari

    I'm posting this to see if it helps anyone with the FW issues they have been having under Lion. I'm not running Lion, I'm running SL 10.0.8.
    I have two Macs, an iMac4,1 and a MacBookPro5,2. I also have a G-Tech 320MB FW 800/400 drive. If I connect the drive to the MBP, no mounting issues. If I connect it to the iMac with the supplied 800>400 cable, it will not mount, BUT if I sleep the iMac and wake it up, it mounts every time. This is with the same drive.
    So, I don't know if sleeping and then waking is a workaround for anyone here.

    Next time you plug in the drive, see if it shows up in
    Disk Utility.  Want to see if the OS is recognizing it
    and just not mounting it.  If it doesn't show up there,
    try the command line version by using the following
