Wallstreet Ethernet Broken: What to swap out?

My Wallstreet G3 has a weird problem that I'm pretty certain is hardware related. One thing wrong is that I can't get the ethernet to work (all software is present).
Is the ethernet "card" on a Wallstreet part of the logic board or can you replace it separately?
Other problems include not booting to OS 9.1 CD but will boot to 8.x CD. But OS 9.1 CD will boot to other Wallstreets so I know CD is fine. Also some weird extension conflicts unless I turn "AppleEnet, SharedLibraryManager" and others that are needed to run programs. Also no ethernet connection as described.
I did all the software fixes: zapped PRAM, rebuilt desktop, new PRAM battery, fresh OS install, used different hard drive, different RAM, etc. Nothing worked.
I'm thinking logic board (ethernet card?), but any other hardware swap suggestions greatly appreciated. I'd like to fix this thing but not sure where to start swapping components. Any ideas where to start?
Thanks!

Here is a take-apart site with superb illustrations to help you find where things are:
http://www.ifixit.com/Device/PowerBookG3Wallstreet
There is no section for replacing just the ethernet port which suggests the port is on the LB, but I don't have a WS at hand at the moment to check.
Its possible the ethernet jack is loose on the logic board due to repeated stress to an attached cable. The solder joints start to give way. See if you can feel looseness in the jack from the outside. Connect a cable an see if you get intermittent network activity when you gently move the plug in the port. If so, you might be able to get inside and shim up the jack to keep it in contact. Admittedly, this is a temporary fix.
If you are not using your Cardbus slot, you could consider an ethernet adaptor in that format, They're getting hard to find, but I found one that says it works on Mac:
Cardbus Ethernet on Amazon
There are cheaper ones offers but they do not say if the work on Macs. Also this one does not say if it works with OS9.
You have some research ahead of you if you go the cardbus route.

We wish to keep a spare computer loaded with all the required editing software ready to swap out if we have a hardware issues. What can we do about licensing, can users hot desk to it? We have about 10 users with various software packages loaded on their current machines. Currently if one goes wrong we have no backup.

You will need to check the licensing requirements for the various software & operating systems that you use.
A much simpler way will be to make a clone of each machines hard disk drives on seperate external bootable drives using Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper. You can then keep a couple of blank machines and boot from the an external drive in an emergency and carry on working. At the end of the work day you can then restore the clone to the internal hard drive of the affected machine, and leave it to run over night to complete the restore.
This method would probably be the cheapest way to implement a disaster recovery option as you will not need to pay for new licenses or 10 new machines.
Just make sure that each machine has an external HDD attached and a regular clone being made on a schedule, this way you will always have an up to date clone to work from.
There are many ways to acheive what you require, NAS etc.

  • Swap out which is base station in 2 extreme set up

Hi. I have two extremes. One is the base station and connected (wired) to the cable modem the other acts as a wireless signal booster for the other half of the house (non wired).  My issue is this the base station has only two of the three available ports going out available (lightening fried the other). The wireless one has all 3 ports available. My son wants to connect his xbox to the base station (via wire) my computer needs to be connected to the base station (wired) and our World book is connected to the base station. He constantly unplugs my wired computer connection for his xbox. A major inconvienience since they are top floor and basement away from each other.  Can I just swap out the location of the two extremes for each other (so the one with all 3 ports working is the base unit) or will I need to reconfigure them in order to do this? If I need to reconfigure them do I just copy over the setting from one to the other?  Thanks for the help.
    Running a windows 7 computer.

You can swap the AiPort Extremes, but both of them will need to be completely re-configured....quite a chore.
If all you really need are more Ethernet ports, it would be simple matter to add a 5-port Ethernet switch to one of the Ethernet ports on the "main" AirPort Extreme to create more connection capability.
Any computer / electronics superstore will have what you need.  Something like this, for example:
    http://www.walmart.com/ip/5-Port-Gigabit-Ethernet-Switch-10-100-1000-Mbps/101048 35
Just connect an Ethernet cable from one of the working ports on the AirPort Extreme to the switch. Now you have 4 available Ethernet ports for devices. If you need even more connections, you can buy an 8-port switch, 16-port switch, etc.

  • Is there a way to check if the rechargeable battery is the original?  I have a feeling mine has been swapped out...

I have a feeling my rechargeable battery pack was secretly swapped out by another user (whose battery had died) - left for vacation working computer, returned from vacation battery not charging.  Is there any way to check (serial number, etc.) what battery came with the purchased computer?  Any help would be appreciated.

No, but you could check to see if the battery installed has about the same amount of charge cycles if you were paying attention to that number.

  • How can I tell if the guts of my monitor have been swapped out?

Hey y’all… I have an HP ZR30w monitor that I sold on ebay. The buyer claimed it didn’t work and I had to give the money back. He returned it but there are pixels burned out and spots where the colors are all purple and the case is all scratched up around the seems. The case has the same serial number, {personal info removed}, but I’m positive the guts were swapped out. (I took it apart and screws are missing) It worked perfectly when I shipped it out.
Is there any identification or anything that would indicate if the insides belong to the serial number on the outside?
    Thanks!

    Hello badamsios,
You want to know if you can match the parts inside the monitor to the serial number.
    Sorry to hear what happened.
The only numbers that are going to be on the parts are the part numbers, and they are generic for the part.
    Have a good day.

  • Swapping out Graphics card on HP Envy 17-k251na

Hello! I have a feeling that i may have been given the wrong information by the assistant i bought my machine from in PC world...
I was assured i would be able to swap out my graphics card, which is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (4 GB DDR3 dedicated)
    and upgrade.
I was also told i could upgrade the processor.
I've been told by a few people that this simply isn't true and to upgrade the Graphics Card i'd need a whole new motherboard... but the term "dedicated" is what's confusing me... am i wrong in thinking that it works seperately and the term "intergrated" means that it's part of the motherboard?
I spent a lot of money on this laptop on the premis of what the assistant told me! Ultimately that i would be able to upgrade this laptop as time went on. (I want to primarly want to use this for gaming)
I'm hoping what people are telling me is all hear say.. it doesn't seem to make sence to me that i can choose between two different graphics cards to run games with and they'd BOTH be intergrated into the mother board....
The other one that's in my machine is an Intel Graphics HD 5500.
Also this machine has a 1 TB HDD and an 8GB SSD, i'd like to also swap out for a larger SSD... i was also told that this was possible.
Hoping for good news here, any help woud be appreciated!

Right now the links to your product manual are down but assuming the 17-k200 series is like the 17-k000 and 17-k100 series there is no easy access to the hard drives and memory. That is, no customer accessible panels on the bottom you can open by just removing a screw. Further, there is no graphics "card" to just "swap out". "Dedicated" and "integrated" refer to the use of memory. An integrated video card shares system memory; i.e. the RAM supplied by the RAM modules you clip into the RAM slots. Dedicated video memory is memory built into the video chip. On a laptop, both kinds of video cards are soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. Your laptop has "switchable" graphics and most definitely has two different video chips soldered onto different places on the motherboard.
As for the processor, you already have one of the newest and best laptop processors offered. The video you have is also pretty top-notch. I am always a bit baffled by people who buy a laptop with the idea of upgrading it. Laptops just do not work that way. Components are way crazy expensive. Your processor is so new there are none to be purchased but when it does become available it will be over $350. On the very few super expensive engineering and high-end gaming laptops that do have a kind of removeable graphics card (mxm) high-end ones run at least $450. So even if you could do the upgrades, which you cannot, you would be looking at over $1000 with labor. I understand people do not appreciate the cold reality of this.
And just to hit you with more bad news, on your model the CPU might be soldered to the motherboard so it cannot be upgraded at all. I can confirm when your Manual is back online.
Upgrading memory and changing the hard drive for an SSD also requires extensive complex disassembly.
You have one of the best consumer laptops on the market. There is just not much upgrade headroom. It sounds like what you really want is a gaming laptop. HP makes one called the Omen which sells for about $1500-1800US, and would be a little stronger than what you have, particularly in the graphics. But even that is kind of a middle of the road thing. You can order a custom gaming laptop from a company like Sager and it is going to cost upwards of $2500 for the very best. Maybe you can complain to PC World and just return the one you have and start over a little wiser for the trouble.

  • Thinkpad Edge S430 - Swapping out optical drive for HDD?

    Hi There
I just ordered myself an S430 with a 128gb SSD HDD included. I didn't see an option to replace the optical drive with a secondary HDD (e.g. a 500gb) so have the optical drive in as standard. Now, I would have rather changed this out for a secondary HDD or for a Blu-Ray drive, thinking I could do this myself once bought...Looking at other posts it looks like you can swap out the optical drive for a Blu-Ray drive, although I would preferably get a secondary drive over the Blu-Ray, but I'm hesitant over a few things:
Is this possible to do myself (swapping out for either secondary HDD or blu-ray drive) without voiding the warranty? (I got it with 2 year warranty)
Is it actually possible to do at all? (swapping out for a secondary HDD)
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Unfortunately, I have found no hard drives that are compatible for your optical bay.  I do believe the reason you can change out your optical drive is to change to a blue-ray or CD, or DVD, maybe a player or burner. But like I said, I have found no hard drive that can fit in your optical drive.  You may be able to find what I could not but I have been looking all over the web.
I know how you feel, my computer at home can not have any hard drives in the optical bay as well.
    Best regards,
    Alex

  • Swapped out AE for TC and now can't connect to Internet!

    Hello all.
I just swapped out an Airport Express base station (the square one, not the old spaceship-shaped one) for a shiny new 1-TB Time Capsule. I figured that since 500 GB external hard drive for Time Machine backups is running out of space, so why not just get a TC so I don't have to worry about (a) hard drive space or (b) plugging in external drives again.
I unplugged the AE and plugged in the TC. Everything else is the same: The TC is plugged into a Verizon DSL modem, and we have two MacBooks in our house. I configured the TC using the Airport Utility. Everything appears to be OK, except that I can't connect to the Internet any more.
I have tried some of the tricks that have worked for other people on this discussion board -- namely, unplugging the DSL modem and the TC and restarting them. They don't appear to work. When I put the old AE back, everything works like a charm.
Has anyone run into this problem before? I'd be grateful for advice and ideas. I don't want to use the TC as a secondary wireless network device, like a range extender. It's a pricey piece of equipment and it should do what it says on the box. I'm pretty sure that the fault lies somewhere between the DSL modem and the TC, but I'm not clever enough with these things to figure it out on my own.

Same problem....3 calls to tech support and almost another one yesterday UNTIL I discovered that re-setting the TC (with the paperclip tool!) worked. The Airport Network, via TC, recognizes my Network and TC pops up into the airport Utility. i kept "losing TC in the Airport Utility page....it only showed AE/Base Station...not waht I wanted.
I unplugged the Express (previous model, one that was prior to "X" capability, ie b/g) and left it unplugged.....this must be an issue) My ONE TO ONE instructors have offered to have a look at it, the AE,at my next appointment.
I, too, have a DSL modem (Qwest) that I have unplugged without success (connections) Unplugging the units seems to work for some things but not this particular problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I swap out Pegasus RAID HDs?

I'm looking at buying a thunderbolt RAID system and my eye is trained on the Pegasus 4TB RAID system. My plan is two buy it and take out 3 of 4 of the HDs and replace them with my 3 Hitachi 7200rpm 2TB HDs which would give me more capacity. Can I do this? I'm new to RAID and just want to be certain I can swap out the HDs before buying it.

Will be a miracle if it works with ther certified drives, I cannot imagine what you can see with other drives....
    good luck!
No support if you change their original drives but you can put back them in case of a unit failure.
R4 shoud support any up to 4tb hdd.
My R4 arrived DOA just to tell you how is serious this company....they assemble and ship, the final test will be at your home with your waste of time for tests and waiting new units .
I will never buy again from Promise specially at this top prices where you can expect at least a basic quality.

  • Swapping out CD rom's

    Hi all,
First i would like to apologize if i am posting in the wrong area. My friend gave me a older mac and i have no idea what type it is or anything. No model # on outside. I can describe it to you.
It has 2 handles. One in the front and one in the back. It is all gray. The drive in this MAC needs to be swapped out for a good drive. Can anyone tell me what type of MAC I have and how to remove the CD drive. The drive is enclosed in a case and there was only 2 screws in the drive from what i can tell, but the drive doesnt come out. What else is holding it down?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Sure sounds like a G5. Maybe you could find it by looking through this site:

  • Do I need to re-enable Core Storage after cloning and swapping out my HDD?

I swapped out the internal hard drive of my mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro for an SSD. I'm very pleased with the performance gains so far — it feels like a whole new Mac. I cloned my HDD to the SSD before installing using Carbon Copy Cloner and I also created a Recovery partition using the same software. Now after doing the hardware swap, verything is working perfectly — no issues at all. Here's my question:
I know that when I upgraded to Yosemite, my hard drive was converted from old-fashioned GUID partitions to the new Core Storage and a logical volume group partition. After the clone and hardware swap, I'm back to old-fashioned partitions, no more Core Storage. Do I need to manually re-enable Core Storage? (I've read about how to do this, and I feel confident I can follow the steps.) What are the benefits of this? Will a future Yosemite (hypothetical 10.10.3?) update put it back for me? Or is it fine to proceed the way I am now? I'm not currently using FileVault 2, which I know also uses Core Storage.
    Thanks.

No, you don't have to convert to CoreStorage unless you decide to create a Fusion drive out of your SSD and HDD.

The w column in vmstat shows the number of swapped out processes.
But top shows the resident size and all size of process and there
no one process which is fully swaped out.
    Therefore the question:
if 90% pages of process are in swap and 10% are in memory then could vmstat increments w?
if 10% pages of process are in swap and 90% are in memory then could vmstat increments w?
    For example:
    PID SIZE RES
    17479 100M 95M
    1031 100M 5M
    what is the w ? 0 or 1 or 2 ?
If the process contains some LWP, then could any single LWP be swaped out or not?
    Thanks!

Well, swapping out a process only removes all of its private pages. Any shared libraries that it's using (which could be a huge fraction of the total mappings) may not be flushed. Even if they were, they might be brought back in by another process shortly afterward.
So if you want to try looking at this further, I'd recommend looking at 'pmap -x <PID>' output.
    0 0 35 2519760 272144 0 0 181 68 89 0 133 14 13 0 2 692 543 451 26 8 66
2 0 34 2398872 26216 0 0 120 196 202 0 101 17 17 0 3 1268 2853 909 88 12 0I looked at this a long time ago and couldn't make things line up. But one thing I wasn't aware of then is that the 'w' column does not represent processes, it represents threads. So when my 'w' column was 20 and I couldn't find 20 processes that looked completely paged out, maybe that was right and some of them had multiple threads.
The w column in vmstat shows the number of swapped out processes.
But top shows the resident size and all size of process and there
no one process which is fully swaped out.Right, because shared pages are counted in RES. (That's why you can't add all the RES figures to get the total amount of memory consumption. You'd be counting some pages multiple times).
    Therefore the question:
if 90% pages of process are in swap and 10% are in memory then could vmstat increments w?
if 10% pages of process are in swap and 90% are in memory then could vmstat increments w?
    For example:
    PID SIZE RES
    17479 100M 95M
    1031 100M 5M
what is the w ? 0 or 1 or 2 ?Indeterminate for two reasons:
    1) A process could have any of its pages sent to backing store through normal paging processes. Even if they all leave this way, the process has not been "swapped".
    2) When a process is swapped, shared pages will remain.
If the process contains some LWP, then could any single LWP be swaped out or not?My understanding is no. "Swapping" is a memory managment thing, and all threads share the same memory. So swapping a process will send all memory to disk, affecting all threads. But I haven't confirmed that (still, no one has contradicted me about it either).
    Darren
