Wallstreet, funny noise after startup tone

Hi all,
Picked up yet another Wallstreet G3 laptop to mess around with. Anyway, I push the power button, get the startup tone, then after a few seconds I hear a funny sound, almost like a car accident or broken window sound, it only lasts a split second. Is this the computer's way of telling me it's toast?
Also, I get a message telling me there is a RAM issue. I've moved 3 different pieces of RAM around both slots and get the same message. I've put 2 new pieces of 256mb chips in the top and bottom, but it only sees the one on the bottom.
Third, when I try to install Jaguar, the install freezes partway through EVERY time, or, I get a message telling me to restart the computer.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom,
As Texan Mac Man suggested, the breaking glass sound in most cases suggests bad memory. The startup chime is a good sign; this is telling you most of the hardware has checked out and has initialized. After the chime, the powerbook runs a memory test...this is when you hear the sound.
Question: Is the warning dialogue saying "A Problem Was Detected With RAM or Cache Memory" or just the RAM or just the cache memory? There is a remote possibly you have a failed backside L2 cache memory but since you get the breaking glass sound, more than likely you have bad RAM or incompatible RAM or possibly a bad RAM slot.
Some Wallstreets are unable to install OSX with more than 256MB of memory present, but can then run the full 512MB of RAM once OSX is up and running.
I would try this: Since you are getting the warning dialogue about memory, you must have some version of "Classic" (OS 8.1 > 9.2.2) installed or on CD. When booted to Classic, see what the Apple System Profiler reports on the L2 cache.
Next, since a 256MB in the bottom slot still causes an install failure, do you have a working 128MB that you can try for the install?
Are you sure the Jag CDs are good?
Are you sure the HD is sound? You can boot to a Classic CD, launch the Drive Setup located in the Utilities folder on the CD, highlight your HD's name, then initialize as MacOS Extended Format (HFS+) while also running 'zero all data'. This will thoroughly clean the HD and spare/reallocate any bad blocks. Follow this with Drive Setup's Test Disk. Details can be found in Drive Setup's Help once Drive Setup is open.

  • Beeping noise after startup

    This just started happening today.
I boot the computer up, I see the Toshiba logo then the windows logo, then the log in screen.
All is fine but when I press CTR-alt-del buttons (a network computer) it doesn't register and I cannot enter my username and password.
The computer begins to beep erratically after a minute or two and I've checked to see if any buttons were stuck or held down but none. I also tried to hook up a USB keyboard to see if I could log in and see if the keyboard was done--but that didn't work either. Although I did only try one keyboard.
I tried to boot the computer up to where I can get into the BIOS or Safe mode screen--but nothing.
Anyone had this happen to them? And what else should I try?
This is a Tecra A4-S211 with XP Service pack 3, 32 bit.

What happens when you press and hold the F8 key just after the Toshiba screen?

Now that you mentioned it, that might be the source of the problem. Something was definitely wrong with my graphics card before the incident happened. You mean that particular batch of graphics cards had some inherent issues, right? I went to the genius bar, and the 'genius' there, without trying to diagnose the problem properly, just adviced me to buy a new mbp! He said Apple will no longer try to fix or touch macs older than 5 yrs. Mine is 5.5 yrs old...

  • Fizzing Noise at Startup

When I bring up my MacBook, I hear the familiar whir and then, just before the Mac OS X startup tone, this weird fizzing noise from my left speaker. Any idea what this is and any way I can stop it from continuing? Is it a sign that something's wrong?

    Hi Masoni,
I am having the exact same problem as you on my iMac 20" core 2 duo. I get a fizzing noise just after the startup tone, then a flashing folder icon with a questionmark in the middle.
I cannot access safe mode or boot, or my windows bootcamp partition so the system is completely unusable, have you managed to fix your problem, if so how did you do it.
    Thanks

  • HP Pavilion P7-1225 Desktop Freezes After Startup. Frustrated!

    Hi,
My family's HP Pavilion P7-1225 desktop computer freezes a few moments after startup, most times. However, it will occasionally work just fine for hours and then suddenly lock up. Over the weekend a sort of clicking sound was heard followed immediately by the freeze. Restarted a few times, heard noise, got lock up. We're not hearing the noise now but it's still freezing up.
We have yet to talk to HP Support about it, but no other professional has been able to solve it (and we have had many try). Please help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Leo

    Hi Leo,
Many things could be causing your issue.  Intermittent freezes can be very difficult to solve.  Since so many professionals have already tried to solve your issue then it's probably time to contact HP Support.  As such, I am not going to suggest what has probably already been suggested and/or tested.
I don't know if you are using an UPS but transient changes in line voltage (too low or even too high) will often times cause a failover and clicking noises (relay closing and opening) with some UPSs will be heard.  I hear clicks from my UPS at times even though the lights don't flicker.  A poor or faulty UPS could cause issues like you are experiencing.  You might also having an electrican check the circuits in your house.  You might want to isolate your PC equipment off circuits that might have high current start up devices that might cause local voltage surges.

  • Macbook Pro Startup Tone?

I have recently bought a Macbook Pro after using Windows for years. I have the Macbook Pro 13" Retina if this helps. Each time I start the Macbook there is a startup tone. Is there any way to mute this sound on startup? Hope you can help. Thanks

You really don't want to do that because the startup chime is the first piece of information about whether the computer is working properly.
Try turning down the sound volume. Sometimes this also works for the chime.
Search at macupdate.com for utilities that will mute the startup sound.

when you install the disc, do it with the machine powered off. Place the disc in the the slot, push it in while holding the power switch tp poer it up, while holding the "C" key down till the gear starts spinning. After the gear starts spinning you can release the C key and wait. This takes much longer than normal longer, then create a new account. Be ready to wait.
    USE YOUR ORIGINAL INSTALL DISC!

  • Why does my macbook make a funny noise when I open it?

After my macbook pro has been on the charger for some time & I open it up, it will make a funny noise & the screen will be blue with a bar on it.  Takes a little bit before I can use it,  Does anyone know what is wrong?

I quit all applications & close the lid.  I usually use the charger all time.  If I leave it unplugged from the charger, it will not do this.  It will make a whirring noise & the screen will be blue over my background, will have a bar on it like it is loading.  Then will finally let me use the curser after a few seconds.  Only had the macbook for about 4 months.  It started doing this about 2 month after I bought it.
If you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare, call them.  Let them deal w/it.

  • No startup tone on upgraded G4

Before I roll up my sleeves and start disciplined troubleshooting I wanted to touch base with you in case you can point me directly to the problem, or close to the most likely cause.
I have a Gigabit Dual 500 G4 that I upgraded with a Gigadesigns M7D-1313G Dual 1.3Ghz in October 2004. The machine was also updated with a SATA adapter and added another internal drive at that time. It has been running 24/7 since then without problem (its run 24/7 most of its life). I added a Radeon 9800 PRO graphics card in Feb 2005.
The machine is used for day to day activity as well as a printer and Retrospect backup server for 5 other machines, small duty. On two occasions over the past couple of weeks I found the machine with a black screen and unresponsive state, pressing the restart button brought it back.
Yesterday the restart did not bring it back, and there is no startup tone. The drives spool up, fans run and there is a Radeon Graphic in the center of the screen with a red flashing bus connector. I have not added any hardware or updated software in months. There is very little dust internally and the machine its located in an unheated room. The exhaust is warm but not hot.
I reset the PDU and tested the battery. There is 1.5 Gbit of RAM scattered over three chips that are a little older than the CPU upgrade. I needed to replace them for one of the OS10 updates.
On one occasion 6 months ago I ran into the same problem, but it eventually clear up on its own.
Similar problems on my laptop in the past led me to the CPU.

    Hi, Yositimy -
Testing a battery is tricky in that it's easy to get a false indication of its health - to get a reasonably valid reading, it should be tested while under load. That machine is old enough now that its battery should be replaced if that has never been done, even if testing it seems to indicate it is okay.
...there is a Radeon Graphic in the center of the screen with a red flashing bus connector.
That could indicate there is an issue with the graphics card. Try reseating the graphics card in its slot, and reseating the connectors on the monitor's video cable - while doing that, check the connectors for bent pins.

  • No startup tone

I want to start my computer in safe mode to test something and according the instructions, I need to hold the shift key once the startup tone sounds.
But there is no tone when my Mac starts.
What does this mean and what diagnostic can I do to figure out why and how to fix it?
    Thanks,
iMac Mid 2011 Intel Core i5 running a fresh install of Yosemite 10.10.2 after an erase and install (and I know the tone has worked since I did the erase and install, but that was a few days ago I last remember it.

If you turn the sound off while logged in - for example, by pressing F10 on the keyboard, or turning the volume right down with F11 - the startup tone will not sound.
I've never had to do it, but you can probably get into safe mode by pressing the shift key as soon as you press the power button to start your computer, or during the shutdown process if you simply reboot.

  • No startup tone/chime

I just noticed tonight that neither my Macbook pro and Imac desktop. the startup tone/chime are not working?
I am concerned this might be a problem.  Both are new this last year and are running 10.6.8.  I have removed all cables and restarted the iMac, still no sounds.  The volume is all the way up on both. I played iTunes on both to make sure I could hear something, working fine?
    Thoughts
    Thanks

Just wanted to let everyone know that the resets did not work for me. Probably something to do with the NVRAM reset instructions saying to hold the key combo down after you hear the startup sound. Uh, there is no start up sound.
The fix for me was very simple. Go into system preferences and unmute the speaker. Volume settings are saved in NVRAM (aka BIOS) and not in the OS. At least that is how I've rationalized it in my mind to make sense. Unfortunately the only way to interact with it is via system preferences.

  • CD / DVD drive making funny noises....

Not the most tech savvy of posts I know, but when I insert a DVD disc into my drive, it just whirrrs, and clicks, and after about a minute, spits it out.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks
    MArk

The drive is making funny noises because it's trying to read the disk. If it can't read the disk, it will spit it back out. Try wiping the disk from the center out with a cloth to remove any fingerprints. Hope this helps!

  • IPod  won't turn on and makes funny noises...

My iPod won't turn on. When I try turning it on it starts making a funny noise, almost like when a cd player tries to read the cd and can't but keeps trying to. Then the apple picture shows up and after a few seconds it goes blank. It is out of warranty and this is a replacement for another one I had that the hard drive crashed on. Sometimes it goes to the "Do not disconnect" screen or the folder and exclamation point screen. How can I get this fixed or is it not worth it? Will Apple replace this one too?

It is pretty easy.I called the customers service for the questions. An officer asked me:"Have you ever put some songs into your Ipod?" "Have you ever safely remove youe Ipod form your computer?" I suddenly realized I sometimes did not remove it safely.
I think you may meet the same problem. What you can do now is to push both the "Wheel" and "Menu",and keep pushing for 6-8 seconds. It will restart, and you will see an apple in the middle of the screen.

It similar to some other peoples problem but i was hoping someone could help me, my applecare literally just ran out like 3 weeks ago.

    Hi baltwo,
Im sorry but Im new to the community and I don't know how to address users directly. Hence intruding.
It would be kind of you to shed some light on the matter.
I'm running lion 10.7.5 and followed similar procedures but mail downloads every mail again after cataloging and indexing my earlier(snow leopard 10.6.5) mail. More details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5373643
It would be great to find a solution as I'm struggling since two weeks.
