Wallstreet PMU - Dead or Alive?

Greetings all. I recently received a Wallstreet (1998 Model M4753) from my mother-in-law with a known history of instability. The laptop that is. Mother-in-law and I are both Mac fanatics. Long term goal is to upgrade hard drive, add wireless and pass onto college daughter. The Wallstreet booted up ok, appeared to be stable. Did add some more memory (256M) on the top slot, and upgraded to OSX 10.2.8. All applications worked ok. But the unit would not reawake properly and had to be physically powered down (plugs out, battery removed). But it would boot up ok. After reading thru all the glorious postings on the Wallstreet, I determined that the internal PRAM battery was defunct. Went to PBFixit, and after building up some courage dove into the disassembly of the Wallstreet and replaced the PRAM. Amazing how they fit all those components into such a small package.
But now I appear to have fallen backwards. Wallstreet will not power up (no chimes, dark screen, no CD drive activity). Have tried all the power management reset suggestions multiple times (press/hold the four reset keys (shift-fn-ctrl-power) for 30 seconds both with battery in/out, AC plugged in/out), but to no avail.
Current status: Wallstreet does not respond to power up button. Press/hold the four reset keys (shift-fn-ctrl-power) for 30 seconds results in sleep light (?) glowing green constantly. Another brief press of the four reset keys (shift-fn-ctrl-power) turns the green light off
Replacing the old PRAM has no effect on the response. Have I killed the PMU?
But on the upside, can now dissasemble the Wallstreet to a bucket of bokts and piece parts in my sleep!
Would appreciate any help/suggestions on what to try next.
Thanks and Happy New Year TJJ

TJJ,
Good work...persistence does pay.
If your 8GB partition is not available for OSX (grayed-out), reduce the size to 7.8GB or so.
Your Wallstreet should have a fan:
http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/3.15.14.html
Apple did sell a "cacheless" 233MHz, but I am not sure how the Apple System Profiler reports it. If a Wallstreet has backside L2 cache that fails, I believe the Profiler reports it as "missing" or "0 K" or it is blank...just don't know. But there is no way to add L2 cache since it is soldered on the microprocessor card. You can, however, replace a cacheless 233MHz microprocessor card with a faster Wallstreet card but which card is compatible depends on your system bus speed. The first Wallstreet release had both a 66MHz or 83MHz bus speed; your Profiler will reveal its speed. Even a move to a 233MHz w/512K cache will give you a 70% speed boost over a cacheless 233 according to MacBench tests. The cards available are 233/250/266/292/300MHz but you must know your bus speed.
As an example, you can buy a used 250MHz w/1MB for $50 at this site; check out all the other speeds.

  • Wallstreet PMU questions

    I'm fixing up my old Wallstreet ( 512 RAM and 30GB HD) and trying to get OS X running. I think the hardware is straightened out (7.8 GB OS X partition, rest OS 9 and OS X data) and finally found the stick of RAM going flaky when hot. Now I have a PMU problem. Works fine under OS 9 and worked under OS 10.2.1. When upgraded to 10.2.8, then shut down, the system won't stay awake, that is, it boots but when it reaches the desktop it goes to sleep and won't wake up. Restting the PMU (shift-fn-ctrl-power) shuts it off and then it won't restart at all. To fix this, I have to pull the plug on the backup battery, which requires a complete disassembly and is a royal PITA!
    This happened to me before on an iBook (white dual USB 500 MHz) when I did the 10.2.8 upgrade. Since that machine was under warranty at the time, I took it back to CompUSA where I bought it, and they destroyed it trying to make repairs. (Long story which came out OK in the end.)
    Anyhow do any of the Wallstreet experts know another way to cause the PMU to reload its code other than disconnecting all power including the internal battery? I've tried "reset-all" in Open Firmware, and that just resets - not reloads the PMU processor.
    Any hints to avoid trashing the PMU's memory on upgrades? Normally they go without a hitch, but this one has bit me twice.
    iBook 800 MHz, Wallstreet G3 292 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    William,
    The failure to power up, or if it does start but then immediately sleeps after the desktop loads reminds me of a problem peculiar only to the Wallstreet that was common in the earlier days of the Wallstreet. Users were replacing their HDs with larger ones (10-30GB at the time) and experiencing these problems:
    - Once the HD was installed, they could load software and everything ran fine, but the first time the display was closed when running, it would not wake, or if the display was closed with the powerbook turned off, it would not start up.
    - Sometimes the 'book would power up but immediately go to sleep.
    - Sometimes pressing the power button produced a buzz when the 'book was not responding.
    - Depending on the particular HD, this issue could be intermittent.
    With most of these symptoms, the cause was the HD's magnet interfering with the magnetic sleep switch located in the side rail next to the 'delete' key (and next to the HD). Once put to sleep, for example, the HD would prevent the sleep switch from opening (if the display had been closed).
    I am guessing that by disassembling the powerbook to get at the PRAM battery, you also removed the HD...this would have released the sleep switch.
    There are several quick ways to test for this problem:
    - when there is no response, remove the HD, then reinstall;
    - tap the side rail with the handle of a screwdrive or something similar;
    - try a refrigerator magnet above or below the side rail (I would be careful here).

  • Dead or Alive?

    I transfered a lot of data from my PC last days... something like 300GB since Sunday.
    I finished the transportation and made shutdown.
    I come back home and my MBP don't restart. Only tha apple logo screen and the waiting icon moving.
    I tried ALL apple manual suggestions (all keyboard combinations, PRAM reset, etc) but NOTHING to do...
    Then decided to put Mac OSX test.
    The test can't find any problem.
    Decided to reinstall Mac OS and started with the CD...
    Now that's the strange part: the HITACHI HD was found but I can't erase it... the system reply me something like: "An error ocurred on erase process"
    OK, I suppose my HD was dead................
    Second strange issue: I never ejected CD from eject button, it was unusable BUT it did when I boot again.........................
    ..........................................AND
    here I AM!!!! MY MBP IS ALIVE!!!!
    I was totally annoyed now...
    The first thing appeared: "do you authorize mDNSresponder to access network?"
    The second question: "do you authorize nmbd to access network"?
    Date and Time was reseted to 2001 0h00 and the system alert me that I need to set...

    Mac OSX Disk Utility answered my HD is OK

  • PMU Dead?

    My dual 1 GHz G4 MDD suddendly shut down and couldn't power up. Had the power button would glow when pressed but nothing else as others have posted. Followed the instructions from this doc
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037
    and replaced the battery. Viola, back from the dead. About a week later my G4 shut down again with the same problem. I didn't replace the battery since it was new and just reset the PMU as per instructions. No dice this time.
    I think something else might be wrong as I suspect the battery is dead again but I am not sure. The battery was $19 so I'm a bit hesitant to get another if this cycle will just repeat itself.
    After 7 years of being a faithful workhorse and kept up to date with the latest software, new graphics card, additional memory, 11g wireless card, it might be time for a new machine.
    Any other things I can easily check before calling it quits?
    PS - Loved this machine but I won't miss the jet engine fans.
    Alan

    The instructions for resetting the PMU state:
    Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    What the instructions don't include is that if you press it twice, the internal memory battery will be quickly discharged. This may be what happened.
    *Resetting Cuda/PMU on Power Mac G5, Power Mac G4, Power Macintosh G3*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86760
    You can get a new battery for much less than $19. Check this site for battery part numbers and sources. Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial
    Also try this. Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a
    unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
    before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
    2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
    3 Open the side access panel.
    4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
    5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
    6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
    7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
    Note:
    This procedure resets the computer’s PRAM. Be sure to
    check the computer’s time/date and other system parameter settings
     Cheers, Tom

  • Wallstreet Battery Dead or Not???

    I had considered my Wallstreet battery as dead. It had no lights and I have a red x in OS 9 and a battery with an x in OS 10. Computer will not run on battery at all. However, since I have started using the Wallstreet again, The battery now shows two lights. Battery Reset says that the battery has been reset but the two lights stay on. I still have x's on the battery icons. Was I right in the first place, or do I have another problem?

    hello,
    having the same problems it is hard to understand since noone really can answer and everyone tells u to try another computer which it is nonsens unless u're tech and have severals around! but anyway if we had another powerbook it might have the same symptoms or worse!!!
    I bought several batteries on ebay, got some desagrement and despointment but realised the PRAM battery was dead and this is causing trouble to the powerbook and the rechargeable battery. I bought a new one at www.welovemacs.com and changed it (if u have dates problems when leaving the computer unplugged for a while or in another occasion then this is it) but I guess u have to!
    This is pretty tough to change but checking the instruction on www.ifixit.com and most downloading their PDF guide onto another computer so u can read through while dessassembling the powerbook u'll be fine but be very careful as this is not very easy and the case is fragile but with a pen and lots of patience it will do and u'll notice a difference in the powerbook (u have to leave the computer for a minimum 8 hours to allow the PRAM getting charged then use the comp again.
    SO u're gonna tell me and the rechargeable battery well I haven't found one yet working but I received one this morning and check that again.
    So I'll let u informed but not many people seems to care about that powerbook anymore and we all have the same trouble with the age of those batteries. But few things can be changed one after one for a nice cost at welovemacs and Ifixit which will lead us to get another working batteries!
    good luck
    PS: it seems the new batteries made these days are hard to work well and cost a fortune...

  • Can a dead thread be alive again !!

    can a dead thread be alive again ?
    i have added some threads in a thread group. and then called its activeCount() methods.
    it is giving results like this....
    the active count:10
    the active count:5
    the active count:2
    the active count: 1
    the active count: 2 // dead thread alive ?
    the active count: 0
    is it feasible theoretically ? i am getting that kind of output

    as most of the time, the API doc saves the day :
    activeCount
    public int activeCount()
    Returns an estimate of the number of active
    tive threads in this thread group. The result might
    not reflect concurrent activity,
    number of activetive threadswhat is the meaning of active here ? alive() ? there is a isalive() method already ......
    and might be
    affected by the presence of certain system threads......u mean system thread can leak into my threadgroup....well
    Due to the inherently imprecise nature of the
    the result, it is recommended that this method only
    be used for informational purposes.
    Returns:
    an estimate of the number of active threads
    threads in this thread group and in any other thread
    group that has this thread group as an ancestor.

  • Tecra M3 + Windows 7: My recent run-in with the unsupported

    Been a long time since I've had anything to do with Toshiba boards..in fact I haven't been on CompuServe where these boards once stood in some four years.  But anyhow, I thought I might share my recent experience with a Tecra M3 and Windows 7.
    Now, before I get into too much detail, YES, I'm well aware that Toshiba itself does not support Windows 7 on the M3; it's older than 2007, and TAIS didn't like Vista on the thing either--who would? After all, Vista was just one more in a long line of flubs Microsoft would sooner forget.
    In my nonprofit, we're lucky if we can pulll 2005-vintage hardware from an electronic haystack full of early Pentium 4-based hardware that in itself is worth more dead than alive, with notebooks being as rare as hens' teeth since the economy turned sour.  The Tecra M3, recovered by management yesterday from a pile of donated scrap, was no exception.  It was the only machine from among three like units that was still functional.
    One of our student techs, volunteering for the day, powered the unit up to find a locked-out Windows 7 install aboard this M3.  The BIOS of this machine was also outdated, which I confirmed after explaining how he would be able to enter the BIOS for hardware info.  Not much there, so we settle on booting more fully into the system to get where we need to go.
    Turns out that the lock on the unit is a simple Windows password.  We have our ways around this.  I set up the "lockpick" and work some magic.  A reboot later, we're into an expired RC held by the prior owner. We examine the system parameters with success.  I then make the call to scrub the system, an overnight job since I wanted the donor's data dead and the expired OS buried with it.  This, too, meets with success.
    Since the RC seemed OK when we ran it, I figured the next logical step would be to run the real thing after the scrub.  I brought in the Win7 Pro 32-bit  DVD this morning to complete this step. Of course, I also updated the BIOS to 1.50 before even starting with Win7.
    For the most part, Windows 7 was able to manage most of its initial setup, picking up core drivers for video, sound, and wireless along the way--almost as soon as I jacked into our LAN, in  fact.  But two drivers were still MIA.  I ran the device IDs throgh Bing, which led me back to Toshiba and more targeted searches, but as it happened, Ask Iris kept dropping out to "no connection" pages for some strange reason.  I did manage to find current TPM software in my searches, but not much more.  Fortunately, Win7's Action Center picked up on the missing devices and offered links to pull the drivers down.  Gotta give MS credit--Win7 actually gave me a couple things that worked smoothly.  It also warned me about "power management drivers". The fix it offered, however, didn't seem to work so well; it just wouldn't load.  I search again manually, and come up with a TVAP bundle from a newer model line that has a few cosmetic quirks, but it works all the same.
    I'm not here to ask why Toshiba chose not to include models earlier than '07; most are out of warranty and so TAIS isn't obligated to offer extended support.  I'm not saying that they should offer as much.  I just wanted to document this case and let brave souls know that if they don't mind working without a net, here's one model of Tecra that may work with Win7.  I've yet to work out some quibbles with Aero not being activated despite the GPU and driver meeting the requirements for it, but these are ultimately unimportant against all the other positive things Windows 7 has to offer.

    Hi, Nate. Good to hear from you again! Thanks for chiming in with that info.
    CompuServe's Laptop Computing Forum is still alive - but barely populated these days.

  • QuickDevastating Mystery:What, Who & How! Plz Help

    Yesterday when I was here aboard my, then healthy/happy, Mac Mini, I posted and new topic/issue snd then was reading a thread describing what to me seemed like one truly weird mini problem. At the end of this thread was a reply from AndyO
    who addressed one mini owner'snoopy dance'and cart wheeling comments.The dude
    wanted us to know that he was feeling serene, elated and merry from seeing pain/anguish of the OP's mini woes which,like the spectacle of someone shoving
    a wheelchaired person down a flight of stairs,was outrageous enough to make
    me chuckle.
    But best of all was AndyO's perspective in which he compared this forum to that of a hospital. Indeed,this is where distressed and needy responsible mini owners come when their mini has incurred some serious injury or illness.
    Given the sudden and devastating illness/death that struck my mini shortly after my visit here (its down at the morgue/funeral arrangments forthcoming), I'm wondering if AndyO's hospital analogy may have more than just metaphoric relevance. Of course I'm referring to the sceneario where ER patients seeking treatment for a sprained thumb croke the next day from some rare infectious disease they came in contact with from the Doc,nurs or other patients.
    Very unlikely I'm sure, but after 1.5 yrs of'snoopy dance'-worthy,cart wheeling problem-free performance, it was amazing/tortured to watch my mini come unglued before my eyes and become rogue /'unresponsive to my basic troubleshooting /diagnostic efforts.Briefly, here's the sequence:
    •I started up photoshop snd got this error mssggr shortly into a session-
    "startup disc full: quit other apps to free up memory and delete files
    to save open docs."Last time I noticed, I had 4 or 6 Gb o disc space just days ago but now i had 120mb.No idea how/what this is about.
    •I quit all apps and dug around though pic and movie folders of folders to find a few hefty ones to drop onto my 500GB external USB drive. A few min.later after all files where copied I flushed approx 11GB from my main drive and just for the heck of it i ran Disc Utility to verify my mini'HD. Surprisingly,several problems were reported and need disc repair.
    •I popped my install disc #1 in the drive tried to reboot from install disc\but disc ejects every time. So I yanked out all cables from mini except the keyboard snd VGA and started up mini to run Disc Utiliy on my install disc. Ha! The DU thinks its a DVD-RW with with read/write permissions!Utterly insane!!!
    How do ya repair an install disc???? I ejected the disc and hosed it off with a long blast of isopropyl 90% then shook off the drops and wiped it once with new microfiber towel.Popped disc back into mini and boom-- disc mounted and Mac OS Install Disc opens,all folders intact.I ran DU again to confirm.It did so. OK.
    Worth noting:These sorts of strange problems which appear for no reason but then
    are fixed by simply cleaning the disc are timely confidence boosters as you delve into the troubleshooting process. And its especially good to know for sure that your tools disc is a healthy one. So forgive me as I snoopy dance here pat myself on the back for fixing my install disc in a clutch sitution. That's because from here forward I had nothing more to inspire me to dance as I was too busy getting my butt kicked.:(
    •I rebooted from the install disc and ran DU to to REPAIR DISC on mini HD.
    This went smoothly as the progress bar chugged forward to the end... almost
    to the end...I'm waiting...its still chugging...Like Ben Franklin always says
    "A Watched Progress Bar Never Finishes" and I'm still waiting...just a few seconds more...waiting.... waitng... I don't mind waiting BTW, afterall its not as if i run DU regularly and prophylactically(eeep!)
    "Click." (silence/darkness fills the room)
    ***!! Mini just shut down.Why? Who knows.
    •I tried to rebooted from install disc but the Mini maindrive started
    which is okay--I only need to run DU once more to verify if repairs were successful. I launched DU and..
    "Click." (silence/darkness fills the room again)
    •This was verifying info just the same which told me "Sumpins big rong!!"
    • I tried to reboot from inst disc. but I cannot do that now.
    I zapped pRA and this restored the startup chime.
    But when the mini's desktop appeared there were NO ICONs then a few seconds
    later..."Click." (silence/darkness fills the room)
    •Reboot and now i see the desktop and no icons but an open folder
    pops up "MY COMPUTER" and my MINI HD icon is inside..Okay so I
    move my cursor onto the ...
    "Click." (silence/darkness fills the room)
    Reboot and try to open a Finder window and while I'm
    "Click." (silence/darkness fills the room)
    The machine shuts down within 5 to 8 sec after
    desktop appears.
    I stopped and shut it down in order to do some
    work using my G4 before I try anymore I'd like
    have the input/suggestions from you guys.
    Oh and,yeah,it would be heartwarming as well
    if Mr Happy feels inspired by the sudden tragic
    loss of my mini and wishes to cart wheel, snoopy
    dance or perhaps dress up in his french maids outfit
    with dark redlipstick and sing"Cry Me A River".
    Its all good.:b
    Thanks,guys!
    Scott

    Scott,
    It's good to see you bearing up in times of great adversity. Sadly I don't know whether to be happy or sad because I can't work out for sure whether your system is dead or alive!
    I do think that a deep breath, followed by putting away the isopropyl might be a good place to start once you've carried out the SMC reset to ensure your system can count all it's various parts. After that, I can't wait for chapter two, though a brief synopsis might help in the event there's a question embedded in it somewhere.
    I would, as the regulars here would know, generally say 'If I were in this situation, I would.....' but alas I can't say that this time because I have barely half a clue what 'this situation' actually is. So in the absence of having a clue, I'll offer you a couple since you mention a G4 which seems not to have succumbed to illness: Suitable firewire cable. Firewire target disk mode. Disk Utility. Perhaps that was just one clue really, or it might have been three. Either way, that may provide a ready means to get at your mini's hard drive and see what's up without resorting to alcohol.
    Just a thought.

  • I have an ipad wi-fi cellular 32gb. Died in march after 3 month has been replaced now the replacement has died, holding home key and button on top doesnt work at all,  not even if left over night and the next day and night, still nothing.

    I was given a ipad after xmas 2012. Within a month it was freezing up and returned to apple to replace. It was sent straight back to me saying it was fine. The day I got it back it was faulty again only this time it was worse, it was switching itself off and turning itself back on when it liked. A back up and restore was completed AGAIN. 3 weeks later it was sent straight back to apple to be replaced, this time a higher authority from apple in brisbane said it was to be replaced immediately. Which it was. Then within 6 weeks this ipad the replacemetn ipad has started having issues by turing itself off. Now it has completely shut itself down and off. Charge was at 81%. I put it on charge as maybe the %% was wrong. A few hours later, tried turning it on by holding top button, nothing happened  I have also held down top button and home key for 10 sec, nothing so I tried longer nothing happened. Rang apple support and they have suggested holding top button down for 10 sec then add home key for 10 sec both top button and home for 10 sec then they top button off followed by leaving home key for 10 sec by itself. This did not work. I have tried this again this morning and again at lunch at work and again now tonight. Still nothing at all. Even plugging it into the computer doesn't do anything at all. Has anyone else come across this at all with two ipads doing exactly the same thing. My power points are fine, I've had an electrician check them and my computer is fine aswell. I stumped as to what can be going wrong. Thanks

    Is your battery dead or alive?
    If the battery is dead, we must find out if it is:
    1. Charger problem
    2. Cable problem
    3. Docking port problem
    4. Wall socket problem

  • Please help me transform this C++ code to java code....

    guys...please help me transform this C++ code to java code....please try to explain the code..thanks
    [program]
    #include <stdio.h>
    #define ALIVE 1
    #define DEAD 0
    #define SZ 33
    int stschk (int ,int );
    main()
    int s[SZ][SZ], i, j;
    for (i=0; i<sz; i++ ) s[0] = DEAD;
    for (j=0; j<sz; j++ ) s[0][j] = DEAD;
    s[0][1] = ALIVE;
    for (i=0; i<sz-1; i++) {
    for ( j=1;j<sz;j++ ) {
    s[i][j] = stschk(s[i][j-1],s[i+1][j];
    if(s[i][j-1]==ALIVE) printf("*");
    else printf(" ");
    printf("\n");
    int stschk(int s1,int s2)
    if(((s1==DEAD)&&(s2==ALIVE))||
    ((s1==ALIVE)&&(s2==DEAD))) return ALIVE;
    else return DEAD;

    Being picky, that's not C++, that's C. Standard headers in C++ dont' have .h after them, loop variables are scoped with the for, you use constants rather than #defines, etc..
    C and C++ both don't initialise arrays by default; you'd have to write an initialiser to get it to zero out the array:
        int s[sz][sz] = {};gcc will insert a call to memset to zero the array.
    If the author was assuming that the array was zeroed out, there would be no point zeroing the first row and column.
    The code reads values which haven't been initialised. If you mark such values explicitly undefined, and change the program to report an error when undefined, then you get several cases where the program makes such report.
    So either it' s a primitive random number generator (some random number generators use uninitialised memory as a source of randomness), or it's buggy, or it's processing undefined data and throwing away the result. Either way, it cannot be directly be ported to Java if the undefined values (which are limited to a small area of the ouput) are significant.

  • Circular linked list while loop

    i have a circular linked list and i'd like a while loop to iterate though all of them. my problem is that it always excludes the last node. i know why, it's due to the fact that "current.next != alive" skips it from ever accessing the last node. i can't seem to solve it. note that the last node in the list points to the first node (alive):
                   while(current.next != alive )
                        prev = prev == null ? prev = alive : prev;
                        //identify the name with it's matching node
                        if(name.equals(current.name.toLowerCase()))
                             prev.next = current.next;

                             current = current.next;
                             dead.next = null;
