WAN Hardening using ONS 15454

Can anyone suggest any details about WAN hardening or any pointers. I guess, I would like to know about using ONS15454 to switch the DS3's between primary and secondary routers. By this we are trying to give redundancy for the customers channeslised T1 going through single DS3 get failed, it gets switched to another DS3 connected to another router.
Thanks

    ONS 15454 Recommendations
    Hello Guys,
Just looking for some recommendations / best practices from experienced ONS 15454 engineers for the following questions.
    Scenario:
There are 2 sites located 130 km away from one to the other and we want to provide a wan connectivity via ONS 15454.
    Questions:
    1. The ethernet / DWDM modules preferred
    2. The typical wave length will be used -- 1550 or 1310?
    3. What are the speeds supported on the modules?
    4. What should be the recommended max losses / power budget for 130 km for Cisco ONS to work properly?
    5. Any specific recommendations.
    Thanks & Regards
    Jay

    1. The ethernet / DWDM modules preferred
    GE_XPE, 10GE_XPE,  OTU2_XP, ML cards,
CE-Series 10-Port Multirate Ethernet Card, 10DME, MXP, 10x10 there are lot of cards depends on your requirement, line rates coming from WAN device, types of module present on WAN side.
    2. The typical wave length will be used -- 1550 or 1310?
depends if you looking for a SDH/SONET solution, will say 1550, if DWDM than it will be composite siganal with MUX/DMUX.
    3. What are the speeds supported on the modules?
    10mbps, 100Mbps, 1000Mbps, 1Gig, 10Gig, 40gig and 100Gig depends on your requirement :-)
    4. What should be the recommended max losses / power budget for 130 km for Cisco ONS to work properly?
around 35dB to 39dB of span loss, looks you need amplification.
    5. Any specific recommendations.
we need to discuss your requiremnets, there are lot of sloution available.

  • Dual Ring Capabilty for ONS 15454 MSTP

    Hi!
I am designing a MPLS over DWDM network which consist of one core DWDM ring and several regional DWDM ring using ONS 15454 MSTP. I would like to connect the regional ring to the core ring via P router in this case Cisco 12406GSR. My major concern now is to reduce the number of boxes especially on the DWDM part. Can an ONS box connect to 2 DWDM ring, regional and core directly without using a router in the middle. Apreciate your expert opinions. Thanks.
    Rgds
    Helme

Core DWDM ring and Regional DWDM ring are built using ROADM cards for full add/drop flexibility. Wavelengths can be engineered to pass between rings by physically patching at the wavelength level. By using the Mesh/Multiring Upgrade card (available today - see data sheet below) you can prepare the network for Degree-N capability, allowing multiple rings to be connected via a single point with dynamic wavelength provisioning across the rings.

  • Native fibre channel using SL cards on ONS 15454.

    Greetings,
I normally hang out in the Storage Networking forum but I thought this would be a good spot to ask a question.
We current have a dark fibre connection between our sites and have issues with our Brocade switches (yeah, they should be MDS) with buffer zero problems. We want to add more bandwidth for our ISL's and we have a couple of ONS 15454's hanging around in racks in our datacentres.. I have been looking at the SL cards for the 15454 and would like to know if anyone has had success with them. I need to do synchronous True Copy between the storage at both sites for a new project. We are using async now but that wont be good enough.
    Any comments would be welcome.
    Stephen

    Stephen,
I don't have any SL cards in production, but do have ML cards, and a myriad of TXP/MXP's on MSTP platforms.
I can tell you, the ML card does a decent job with distance extension is turned on. I have a few STS-24's extended across 400-500KM span lengths for TAPE drives across ML cards and see consistently high throughput.
Measured latency across a 70km span was about 600us with an ML card. Pretty close to an equivalent circuit built across a Muxponder.
I would venture to say, the only concern that you may have with synchronous replication is the latency.

    Tom.

  • 6509 to ons 15454 showing not connect.

Were running into a problem moving from an oc48 to oc192. In our web enviornment we have a Front-end switch and a Back-end switch in two data centers that are 10 miles apart. Were running a "gigaman" betweent the two. On both ends we have cs6509's and were patched into the Gbic interface on the sup2's. This fiber is ran to are lec's ons 15454 which I have no visibility into. We are unable to get a connection on the 6509's. Were doing basic layer 2 trunking between the switches. Sbc tested from the fiber on the switch to a loop on the other switch and was able to test clean. This worked on the oc-48 but are switches were not connected to a cisco ons. Any suggestions would be apperciated. You can also email me at [email protected] or AIM jjt8572.

Have you checked that you have matched the physical media framing - e.g., LAN PHY needs to speak to LAN PHY (or WAN PHY to WAN PHY). Typically the ONS 15454 would be looking for a SONET frames (WAN PHY) while a Cisco 6509 would be sending 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN frames (LAN PHY). That is, unless you specifically choose an interface for your 6509 such as the XENPAK-10GB-LW (10GBASE-LW XENPAK Module with WAN PHY for SMF). From that product's data sheet: "The Cisco 10GBASE-LW Module supports a link length of 10 kilometers on standard single-mode fiber (SMF) (G.652).
WAN-PHY is intended to allow the transport of 10 Gigabit Ethernet over a traditional SONET/SDH infrastructure. The purpose of WAN-PHY is to render 10 Gigabit Ethernet compatible with SONET STS-192c format and data rate, as defined by ANSI, as well as the SDH VC-4-64c container specified by ITU."
One can also use Cisco ONS transponder cards that will wrap LAN PHY framing in something like G.709 encapsulation to allow it to be transported through a DWDM network.

  • ONS 15454 Chassis Document

    Hello All,
I wanted to know if there is a document that will show how to put an ONS 15454 chassis together?  What each TCC, SMR, WXC card means and used for? What the DS, OSC, LINE, COM, EXP ports used for? Etc.
If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great!
    Thanks!

Well the product support pages show how to physically install y every componenet of the ONS equipment:

  • ONS 15454 and AC/DC Converter for 220V

    I am looking for a AC/DC converter for a ONS15454 for a 220V input.
The ONS 15454 datasheet indicate input current 22A maximum.
The Cisco AC/DC Power Solution datasheet indicate for ONS 15454 a medium solution.
And the same datasheet indicate the small solution is up to 32A for 220V.
Then, can I use the small configuration for ONS at 220V?
Anyone know that? Can you help me with that?
    Graciela

What is the hardware configuration of your 15454 including chassis, fan and by slot?
Using the hardware config, you can calcualte the expected amperage.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/optical/ps2006/products_tech_note09186a0080094ae4.shtml
The general power requirement of 22A provides for any possible configuration. Actual configurations may be less. I have some 454s using as little as 9A in the lab.

  • ONS 15454 SDH with 2 ML cards connected to the same RPR

I was wondering if I could connect 2 ML cards installed in the same ONS 15454 to the same RPR ring. Thanks!

    Bob,
If you are wanting to tie the ML100 and the ML1000 into the same RPR Ring, then you have do do it with the POS interfaces.
    For Example:
    ML 100 POS 0   - North  Microwave
    ML 100 POS 1   - connect RPR to ML 1000 POS 0
    ML 1000 POS 1 - South Microwave
North Microwave connects RPR to South Microwave
This creates a single Loop or Ring
It sounds like you are using your ML1000 as a Spur to another location.  In order to create an RPR ring, you must have the cards physically connected to each other in a continuous ring.

  • ONS 15454 STS Limits

I know the ons 15454 has a limit of 24 STS connections, but is there any easy way to determine if you have reached that limit. We are trying to use another ds3 port on an existing card and are getting errors that we are unable to provision any more circuits. I just want to determine if we are at our threshold for STS connections and how to determine which cards are using how many STS connections.

At the node view, Click Maintenance > Cross-Connect (or similar) then the Resource Usage tab. This will show the XC resource usage.
As for the 15454 cross connect limits. That is driven by the cross connect card as follows:
    XC-VT - 144 STS bidirectional cross-connects
    XC-10G - 576 STS bidirectional cross-connects
    XC-VXC - 576 STS bidirectional cross-connects
    What software version?
    What DS3 card(s)?
    What OCn card(s)?
What does your circuit mapping look like?

    Hi Colin,
so you want to add two more ONS devices in an existing ring.
if you can provide a topology it will be helpful,
if you just want to add two more ONS in existing ring, it will no cause any issues,
we just have to take care of circuits and need to build them from TL1 in these new nodes.

  • Cisco ONS 15454 SONET MSPP

I am doing a school research project in which I am setting up an OC-192 ring for a company (contract work through AT&T). I have chosen to use the Cisco ONS 15454 SONET MSPP as my platform. The company currently has locations in Chicago and Philadelphia and connects them through an OC-12C ATM connection and they are looking to add 2 gigabit ethernet connections.
My question is what cards and parts will I need for the Cisco ONS 15454 SONET MSPP, and how much will everything cost? I have been searching the internet for components and prices and I have found it extremely difficult to find any information. Any help or tips anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Nick,
You can find the HW specifications for various ethernet cards for the 15454 at the following location.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r9_1/15454/sdh/reference/guide/454e91_ethernetcards.htmlhttp://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r9_1/15454/sdh/reference/guide/454e91_refer.html
To make sense of it all, you need to contact a Cisco sales/account represetative to help you analyze your needs, design your network and put together a price list for the appropriate cards.
If you are interested, I can get someone from the sales/account team to contact you.   Please contact me directly with your contact information and geographic location so I can find the appropriate sales/account to help you.  Please do not post your personal information directly to the forum.

  • Does ONS 15454 SDH supports TACACS+ ?

    Hi,
We are currently managing 16 ONS nodes in our customer environment and we need to implement AAA using TACACS+ to those ONS chasis.
We are currently using default Superuser account, and we could only find support document related to RADIUS but not for TACACS+.
Does anyone have implemented authendication on ONS15454 SDH with TACACS+ and do let me know how to implement it ? If not, does we have any Cisco document to clarify why it is not supported ?
    Thanga

    Thanga,
AAA is not supported but RADIUS is.  Use DLP-A456 (Configure the Node for TADIUS Authentication) to set up the ONS 15454 to use Radius.  It is in the Procedure Guide for the ONS 15454.
If you have any problems please call 800-553-2447 to open a TAC case.
