Want a Mac but I need a quick answer.

Ok I want to buy a Macbook Pro and an iMac. But when I did the calculations I ended up with almost $7000.00. Now that was because I added the upgrades to the two of them. But I would like to know can I get them without upgrades which is about $4000.00. And then take it back to the store and upgrade when I can afford it?

If by "using the Apple Store" you mean that you want to purchase memory elsewhere and have the Apple Store install it, check with your local Apple Store first. Most Apple Stores will not install memory purchased elsewhere. I don't know what other "upgrades" you're referring to, but memory is the only item internal to in either a MacBook Pro or an iMac that's officially field-installable and memory is easy for you to install yourself. Hard drives cannot be installed by the user in either system without voiding the warranty and in my experience an Apple Store will not do hard drive installs except in the case of warranty replacements of failed drives, so you'd have to find an independent authorized Apple service provider to do a hard drive upgrade.

check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If it does... then you need to Purchase the Snow Leopard Disc and Install it.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Would Also Recommend that you do a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive Before attempting any Major Upgrade...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/

  • Need a quick answer should I get just wi-fi or wi-fi cellular thanks

Need a quick answer should I get wi-fi or wi-fi w/ cellular what do you think is the best way to go. Will be shopping for one in the next few days. Thanks

It depends upon where you will be using it - do you need to be able to access the internet when you are away from wifi networks, and/or do you need built-in GPS (only the cellular iPads have a built-in GPS chip) ? If you get the cellular version then you don't need to activate a service on it until if/when you need it

  • I want to buy iMac. Need tips and answers

I'm considering high to purchase the iMAC 27-inch 3.1 Ghz i5 and if my question are well answered, with god grace, I will confirm my order on the launch of LION OS.
The iMac will serve the purpose as mentioned below
    1. I'll be working on with Pro Logic Music Full Edition (for the purpose of composing and arrangement musics)
    2. Aperture 3
    3. Final Cut Express
So basically I'll be working on publications, some video and music composing and editing. So thats my main purpose.
However, I'm having consideration to upgrade
    1. Is it worth it to upgrade form i5 to i7 processor? Obviously there will be increase in speed. But my question is, doest it really shows a significant speed from upgrading from i5 to i7? Can I see the processiong speed increase alotz? and if it increase, is it just little or huge difference?
    2. The pre installed is 4GB, by increasing it to 8GB, will I see any significant differences, especially when working out on logic express and final cut, as i believe it needs alot of memory usage. However, does the 3 applicaiton, supports upto 8GB or what? Does it really contribute to significant of increased performance?
    3. Upon purchasing my iMac, I woud like to attach another 2 units of Samsung 27 inch FULL HD supports upto 1920 x 1080 screen resolution. So basically, there will be 2 separate monitors + 1 iMac. So is it necessary for me to upgrade to the 2GB Graphics Card?? Or just leave it as 1GB. By splitting the monitors, do I really need higher resource of graphic card? i'm NOT going to play GAME. I've heard some issues, whereby when they split the monitors, there appear to be some black coverage area, and the screen size is not maximise.
    4. I currenlty own a External Sound Card Powered by the FireWire 400mbps, the iMac mentioned it supports up to 800mbps, so can my external sound card support the iMac. ( This is for recording and output purpose) as I won't be using the iMac speakers, instead attaching a huge Powered Speakers to my External sound card.
    5. Finally, I'm interested in purchasing the Thunderbolt Peragus Drive which can support up to 4 to 6 terabytes. So the problem and issue now is, iMac provides
1 Fire Wire - (which I will be using for External Sound Card)
Thunderbolt - 2 units, which I will be using it for 2 monitors
Peragus Thunderbolt Drive - I HAVE LACK OF ONE THUNDERBOLT CONNECTION. SO HOW?
can I use the 1 unit of thunderbolt to output into 2 EXTRA MONITORS?? My monitor supports HDMI, and DVI signals. And If yes, Will there be a PIXEL DISTORTION or BREAK?? I mean I really want a clear view of the monitor, without any loss of quality. So please suggest me. I'm extremely new to MAC, and I need very good professional advice.
I would be thankful, if you guyz could answer me clearly, according to the question.

    I'm a bit confuse.
    1. You mentioned to install another 8GB. Are you trying to say the total memory will be 12GB??
How's the situation. Is it like this
    1st Slot - 2GB
    2nd Slot - 2GB
    3rd Slot - 4GB
    4th Slot - 4GB
Yes if the way the slots are numbered result in matched pairs of memory, i.e. nothing to worry about if the Apple-supplied memory is not touched as they’ll be a matched pair; just add the two 4 GB sticks in the two empty slots.
If you don’t install the memory in matched pairs, it will work but you won’t have dual path access to the memory so the memory will be slower.
When you sum up, you get total of 12GB, which I don't think so can be configured in apple store. The options are 4GB in each slot, when you plan to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB or 16GB only.
Yes, the total would be 12 GB and you buy the additional 2x4GB memory sticks from either Apple at the time you purchase the computer or from a third-party vendor - but you must be careful to get the correct type of memory.  Sites like OWC can be very helpful guiding you.  If you buy from Apple, you cannot add to the device via the configuration options as you pointed out.  But once you initiate the online purchase, you’ll be able to Continue Shopping for other items such as memory to Add to Cart before you Checkout.  It’s easy to install memory yourself.  Just be careful to buy the memory exactly designed for your machine!  Any tiny variance and the memory won’t work; it’s not too difficult but read the specifications carefully.
    2. You mentioned that I don't need 2GB memory card, however, my question is, by splitting the monitors into another 2 additional monitors, will the graphic display will be compromised or not? To be more clear, will I have an accurate display or a bit less quality display?
I am sure that graphics card with 1 GB will support the three displays if you are not using the computer for gaming.  If you are gaming, then you might want the 2 GB card.  You can prudently call Apple to discuss if you like.

  • I have an old G5 MAC I want to recycle but I need to clean my drive.  I can't find the diskette that came with the MAC to do this.  Any suggestions

Any suggestions on wiping my MAC drives clean if I don't have the diskette that came with it?

Don't mean to upstage a level 6 Tech but having just wiped my own G5 for reinstall, I know you can do it on the computer monitor.  If by "recycle" you mean to sell or give away the computer, go to Disk Utilities (in Application/Utilities) and hit the erase button, choose the 35x swipe and it's supposed to clean it completely within a couple of hours.  I did the 7x wipe and got a sudo (single user que) showing nothing but the presence of BSD initiation and a "We're hanging here".  Did a reinstall and it's beautiful.

  • My Ipod is formatted for Mac, but I need to download audiobook from Windows

My Ipod is formatted for my Mac, and my entire library is in it. However, I need to download a audiobook from my library , and when I connect my Ipod to my Windows PC, it is telling me that I need to restore it , which means that I will

      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay and MacDrive for instance get good reviews. XPlay is an iPod specific program, MacDrive is more general and lets you access various types of Mac formatted drives on Windows such as CDs, DVDs, hard drives etc:

  • I want an app but i need to do an update but i dont know how too

could someone help me do this update on my ipod

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
    Identifying iPod models
    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.
However, your MAY be able to get the last compatible version by:
Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • Simple question just about any one can answer I need a quick answer.

Of course there are millions of iPod and iTunes users. and of course many of them want to back up their music, Reformat the same PC and pu the music they bought and legaly on Back onto the same PC.
I can't be the first person in iPod history to re-format.
So do I De-Authorize my PC "Before" or "After" I burn a Back up CD.

Well....You can Use iTunes for Backing up your Music, but I do not favor this mehtod.
It works fine for music files BUT: I prefer more control and completeness over my backup process. It is also very important to note that a large limitation of using iTunes to manage the backup is that the iTunes method does not create or maintain backups of the two meta-data files (iTunes Library.itl & iTunes Music Library.xml) where your Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. are stored. See: What are the iTunes Library files?
If you are heavily invested in your Library data (Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings, Last Played, Date Added, etc.), it is crucial that you also make and archive multiple backups of your ‘iTunes Library.itl’ file.
If your music is located under one common Folder (e.g.-‘iTunes’), then it is easiest to physically copy that folder and all its sub-folders in one simple process. It can be done quickly, and incrementally – several times a day, when necessary. In the case of any data loss, just re-copy your entire (or partial) music library back to wherever it was, placing it in the main Folder that the previous iTunes expected. Along with the ‘iTunes Library.itl’ metadata file, this completes a full ‘restore’ of your music to the time of your last backup.
Use of a backup software program will greatly help. It will allow you to easily perform incremental backups of only the files that have changed. WinXP has such a facility built-in. I use a free program called FileSync ( http://www.fileware.com ). There are many out there. Some use Zipped files or proprietary formats, others use standard file formats. I like FileSync as it uses normal file formats that can be viewed/managed via any Windows program or utility.
iTunes Files to Backup (anytime you make additions or changes to the Music or Library that you want to retain)
    1) All music files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
    2) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    3) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    4) Any XML playlist files you created for Playlist retention
    5) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
    6) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”
Here's a list of possible ways to copy your music files from your main iTunes computer to another storage medium for backup purposes.
    1) Use an External Hard Drive to store the complete iTunes meta-data files and underlying Music Folder structure and songs from your main computer. They are quite cheap now, for their storage volume. This is my preferred main medium.
    2) If you have Two Computers:
2a) Connect them through a router
2b) Connect them using a Direct (w/Mac) or Crossover (PC/PC) Ethernet cable (See: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html)
2c) Connect them via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. See: here as an example.
Copy the files and folders from one computer to the other. Use the second PC as your backup repository.
    3) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7+ GBs each) with the music data files and store them safely. Re-writable ones are good for backup purposes (if your DVD drive can manage these).
    4) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #3 above and store them safely in more space Re-writable ones are good for backup purposes (if your CD drive can manage these).
    5) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB – 4+GBs) to store the files only if you have a small amount ripped music or have multiple and/or jumbo USB drives at your disposal that will fit your music library.
    6) Use the Second Internal Hard Drive (if available) of your PC -- not optimum, as you really want to physically separate the storage of backups from the originals, but good as a tertiary storage device.
By keeping only one copy of your music (other than on the iPod), you are not truly 'backed-up' and are running a high risk of losing your music. Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
It is a good policy to backup all your important data. It is a very smart policy to back it up on more than one medium.
External hard drives now run less than $100 for 200-250GBs of storage. Very cheap backup insurance, indeed. See This Link

  • Need a quick answer on advanced search parameters

I am an IT professional, but am not a regular Thunderbird user. I have an e-discovery need to search for multiple terms in a mailbox. The best solution I have found for this is to export the mailbox from Google Apps as an .mbox, and use the importexporttools extension for Thunderbird to import the .mbox.
I then have the mails in a local folder, and right-click on the folder and click on search messages. A number of filters appear, and I put in my terms, select to search within body, for Any results.
This works fine for me but I have two questions:
    1. How can I search for something with an apostrophe in it?
For example, if I needed to search for:
    '123abc
How would I do it? Quotes? Is there an escape character to state that that needs to be taken literally and isn't a quote or part of a command?
    2. Does the search I am performing, or any other way of searching, search within attachments? In Google Apps I can search within attachments - such as text files, or Microsoft Office documents. Is this possible to do?
I searched through the help files and FAQs, but I am not sure if I am using quick filter, or global search etc.
    Thanks!

There are different methods of searching.
    '''Quick Filter:'''
The Quick Filter can be used to search in the selected folder. There are additional filters to refine the search.
    * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/quick-filter-toolbar
    '''Global Search: '''
The Global Search can be used to search all accounts. There are additional filters to refine the search.
    * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/global-search
    '''Account and folder specific Search:'''
'Edit' > 'Find' > 'Search Messages'
    or
'Menu Icon' > 'Find' > 'Search Messages'
    A new window opens.
At the top you will see: 'Search for messages in' and you can select the mail account or specific folder from the drop down selection. You can choose to 'Search subfolders' if required.
If you are using one search criteria (condition) or more than one but they all must be true, then select 'Match all of the following' option If you are using more than one condition, but any, not necessarily all, can be true, then use 'Match any of the following'.
    example test:
Using Account and folder specific Search method.
I set it to search a particular folder.
selected: 'Body' and 'Contains' and typed: "new
    click on 'Search' button
    It returned only one message.
when I removed the quote mark so it only said: new (not "new)
clicked on search and it returned several possibilites.
So this worked, returning exactly as required.
When I used the 'Global Search' on same folder typing: "new
It returned a search only on : new
Quick filter method also failed to recognise the " used before new.
So in this instance of searching on: "new
neither Global Search nor Quick filter returned the best result although the message required was included in the selection returned.
The best method which worked as required was Using Account and folder specific Search method.
You can search to return any emails with attachments using 'Account and folder specific Search' method.
Quick Filter and Global filter will search on whether the word 'attachments' is in the eg: Body of email, but not necessarilly locate emails with attachments.
Global search will search to include attachment filenames.
    Quick filter does not.
As far as I'm aware, you cannot search the contents of an attachment.

  • Thinking about purchasing a Macbook, but I need some questions answered

    Hey everybody,
I got a response to my Craigslist ad, so it's looking like selling my iMac G5 and buying a new Macbook might actually happen. My only problem is that I have some questions about what to do with my money. I'm not a power user, or someone who really plays games (other than my Nintendo emulators) so I already know that a Macbook is the right computer for me.
    (1) I don't have external storage, so how should I go about transferring my stuff? Buying the Macbook before selling my iMac is not an option because I just don't have that much money. I've read that some people buy the Macbook and then upgrade the HD, using the 60 Gig that comes with it as their external storage by buying a $20 case for it. I have about 50 GB taken up on my iMac, so I'm going to probably need around 100 GB at least. I know upgrading the memory doesn't, but does upgrading the HD void the warranty? Any brand recommendations for HD's? Heat and noise are very important to me. (7200 RPM is out)
    (2) I never really used the Superdrive on my iMac, but it was nice to know it was there. Is the performance difference from 1.83 to 2Ghz noticeable? I hear it's not, but I also read that under Rosetta it matters. Since Office isn't universal yet, I'd like to know. Can anyone verify this?
    (3) I read on MacOSRumors that Leopard is probably going to do some nice little graphic effects when it's released, and that the next revision of the Macbook Core Duo will probably still have integrated graphics. Since I don't plan on doing this again for at least another year, do you think the Intel graphics will be enough to keep up for a little while?
    (4) Anybody have some experience with selling a computer on Craigslist? I'm smart enough to request cash, local buyers only, and have them meet me at my house to try the computer out. Any advice on how to make sure this runs smoothly? I might end up leaving some things on the computer for the buyer. Anything that I should make sure to delete (i.e. preferences, passwords, etc.?) A checklist of what I should remember to do would really help.
I think that about covers all of it...Thanks in advance.

I sold my computer on Craigslist. No problems. I think it's only really dodgy if you are buying one from there - then you should be very careful!
I'm not sure exactly the best way to go about deleting your stuff, but you have the right idea: get rid of your preferences and passwords, and your internet history as well.
I'm not sure how to look at 'Keychain', but you might want to make sure that this is empty.
In terms of processor speed, I can't help you: I have just got the 2Ghz, but partly because not having a DVD burner isn't an option for me. As file sizes and your storage needs increase, your need for a DVD burner will probably increase as well.
Leopard is not far away now, and I would guess that Apple would make sure that their new OS will work adequately on their new computers. I would be surprised if there is much of a noticeable difference in anything but the most graphics heavy applications. Could be wrong about this, but I think that the basic GUI will perform well on any MacBook.
In terms of moving info from your iMac... the cheapest thing apart from buying the MacBook before you sell is borrowing a HD or iPod from a friend. 50G isn't THAT much info, you could always burn it to DVD-Rs in a pinch.
