Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

Hang of my laptop and want boot device

My laptop note book 1000 hang when i start it and it demands to instal an operating system.I instal windows 8 many times but after some days or sometimes after some hours it hang again and want to instal window.i am so worry about it and wants a permenant solution of it.Please!! give me this solution.it sometimes show the Kernal Data Inpage Error and restart but after restarting it demands to instal the window.

Is this the best way to Triple Boot?

Hi all, I have a had a pickle of a time setting up Leopard...with my triple boot setup.
I am curious if I went about it "properly"or if there is a better way.
Use instructions at your own peril if you wish. I am not responsible for errors or any problems you may have by using my instructions. This is my individual experience. *I am happy if this works for someone* struggling to set up a triple boot, but am posting this more so to see if there are any improvements to be made, or mistakes that need correcting to this method...
I had an Intel MBP (SR) with 3 partitions. Tiger, Vista and Ubuntu but when trying to install Leopard it said it would not install and I would have to change my drive to guid partition scheme.
So, through trial and error this is the only way I could get it to work.Keep in mind I started from scratch with vista and ubuntu, but did make a backup of my tiger drive.
1. BACK UP
2. Wipe everything and repartition internal disk to guid partition map and 1 partition. Install Leopard.
3. Use either disk utility or carbon copy cloner(my purchased copy of SuperDuper is still not able to do what CCC, a free program can do,apparently because they are trying to figure out time machine and are holding up a leopard compat. version, uuughh, but thats a different post...) to clone Leopard to external drive that is set up as GUID partition scheme.Make sure you are able to boot this external.
4. Wipe internal, repartition to 3 partitions using disk utility and MBR partition scheme in this order from top to bottom(in disk utility partition gui);
  a. Leopard partition: OSX extended journaled
  b. Vista partition: I think there is only one option: maybe Fat? Just make sure you select "windows" format (The vista installer will need to reformat this during install anyway)
  c. Ubuntu partition: "Free Space"
5. Then to install leopard, (which apparently won't install on a drive set up as MBR partition scheme, but that is what we formatted the internal drive as anyway) clone the external copy of leopard to the internal OSX partition we just made.
6. Then install vista by booting from install cd. During install you may have to reformat the Windows partition using the windows installer, but it should install fine after that.
7. Then Install ubuntu using live cd/dvd to the internal free space partition, splitting/ formatting the last partition using the ubuntu install/partition tool on the "manual"partition mode(make sure you are using the correct free space partition. I confirmed this by looking at the sizes of the partitions that showed up): "free space" into root and swap partitions if you want. I used ext2 for root
     *Side note:*If you have the same MBP as me you may have to change some setting when booting the live cd: Once the cd loads and you get to the preliminary menu window, press F6 to edit. A command will show up on the screen: You have to erase the last two words starting at "quiet" till end. Then write "allgenericide" in their space, keeping all of the command before quiet.  then press enter. It should then load to the ubuntu desktop where you can click on the install icon.(this took me a long time to figure out. I have also have to do this everytime I want boot into ubuntu, which stinks. Anyone know how to resolve this? (Linux masters?)
8. boot into osx and install rEFIt
Issues:
1. My Leopard partition is not showing up in OSX's startup disk pane in sys pref. but it is booting/ showing up as if it was, if having trouble, try holding option key during startup.
2. I have also had a few issues with rEFIt not starting up as default menu, but when holding option key at startup it will show up. Then gives me the option of OSX, Vista or Ubuntu once selected.
3. And the command thing with ubuntu at every startup I mentioned earlier.Is there a way to write allgenericide as a default or any other way to fix this?
If anyone has a better way of accomplishing this please let me know. I got to this point through a lot of trial and error and I'm not sure if there is a more stable/better way for a triple boot setup...
I would like for the Leopard partition to show up as the osx startup disk in the pref pane, but regardless it is still working.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems boot camp makes the drive into an MBR partition scheme anyway, so I'm curious what others who were already running dual or triple boot, boot camp systems had to do when upgrading their boot camp setups from tiger to leopard. Did it not allow you to install to the MBR partition scheme made by boot camp? Did you have to start from scratch as well?

And that may make Leopard the default.
In Vista, AppleControl is under /Windows/SysWOW64 if you ever need to get to it (there is also AppleOSSMgr and AppleTimeSrvc )

Mountain Lion won't boot after install Win 8 Professional via BootCamp 4.0

i have a big problem.
i have install Windows 8 Professional (via MSDNAA) via Boot Camp 4.0 on my MacBook Air 13" 2012 with Mac OS X 10.8.1.
Windows 8 Prof. running good on my Mac, but if i want boot in OS X my MacBook always boot in Windows 8.
If i start the Boot Camp System Control on Windows a error show to me, that i have no admin rights. Of Course my Account has admin rights.
If i click reboot in OS X it reboots always in Win 8 with no choice to change my system.
I have tried to hold shift, but nothing happens.
Pls pls help me, i want back to Mac OS :/

As you are booting, hold ALT/Option key, this will show you the bootable drives and you will be able to choose the OS you want.
Remember, Windows 8 is not offically out, and is unsupported by Apple and Microsoft at a End-User level. This means only developers and system administrator with direct MSDN support are suppose to be using Windows 8. When Windows 8 offically releases on October 26, i am sure Apple will update Boot Camp to fix any permission issues.
Watch out next time when jumping aboard unsupported OSes.

Cannot boot to Windows disk to install XP (via Boot Camp)

I've got an issue w/ my late 2006 24" Imac that I have not been able to resolve.
Last week, I had the local Apple store replace the Video card in my Imac. The installed card was a nvidia 7300 GT. It was replaced w/ a 7600 GT (or at least that is what is reporting in System Profiler). My Imac had Tiger running w/ bootcamp beta 1.1.1 & a Windows XP partition.
After the card replacement, I was no longer able to boot to Windows. Selecting the Windows HD at boot-up resulted in just a grey screen. The tech at the Apple store said to try and do a Windows repair install, which seemed fine to me. Got the Imac home and found that I could not boot to the Windows install CD. Same result: a plain grey screen. You could hear the drive accessing the disk, but I saw nothing on the screen.
Went back to the Apple store, where the tech said all he could reccomend was a full wipe and re-install of the Mac OS & then new Windows install via boot camp. I was loath to do this for obvious reasons, but I went ahead and wiped the disk and installed Snow Leopard, with all updates.
So, of course, after creating the boot camp partition, I am STILL not able to boot to the Windows install disk. Everything else works fine, but when I try to boot to the Windows disk, I get just that same grey screen. I have tried re-burned copies of this disk, as well as two other Windows XP disks. I've also tried a Windows 7 disk; None of them worked.
So I ask here: Has anyone ever seen anything like this, and been able to get it resolved? What steps should I try next? Thanks for any help or insight you can provide.

WHY did you take it in?
And go back and have them provide (if they or AppleCare can) with a proper correct 7300GT. I don't see 7600GT as being used in iMac.

Buy a copy of Snow Leopard for $29 to get Boot Camp 3.0. I assume you wanted Boot Camp 2.2 and that you need to upgrade to XP SP3 or later at this point.
As for burning Windows ISO - from where? and how? Disk Utility can, but not well, and to do so needs to be burned at REDUCED 2X if it is to work.
I'd say 75% of Store Geniuses are clueless when it comes to Windows on Mac, unless they've actually done it themselves and have hands on experience and "quote" gotten their hands dirty "end-quote."
That or build your own off the shelf Sandy Bridge based system.

Cant boot after upgrade with conflicts

always when i install arch and do:
pacman -Syu
i have error:
failed to comit transaction (conflicting files)
without that upgrade i cant install desktop manager so i try:
pacman -Syuf
pacman -Sc
pacman -Syu
and it finish upgrade without errors but when i reboot it want boot:
Unable to find root device /dev/sda10
You are beign dropped to a recovery shell
and my keyboard doesnt work too, only i can i reinstall Arch and when i do that i have same problem next time with conflicting files.
i try many linux distros, gentoo, slackware and every of them works great only arch have stupit conflictioning, is this a bug ?
what can i do ?

For an explanation about those conflicting file errors (and how to fix them), take a look here.
As for the "unable to find root device" error, you probably borked something by running "pacman -Syuf" (never use the -f flag for a generic update). Take a look here at how to fix that.

Since you have a PowerMac G5 Quad (Oct 2005 model),
the answer is NO. The new Sonnet Tempo E4P is an awesome SATA card for a Quad but it does not support booting. It does support direct connections, port multiplier enclosures, hot swap, sleep mode, and has four external eATA ports. But NO Boot capability.
I have talked to several SATA host adapters and from what I have heard none of them expect to add boot capability to SATA host adapters used in a PCI Express (PCIe) slot. I want boot capability too but it does not appear that will happen with a 4 port external PCIe card. The FirmTek cards can boot with PCI-X but PCIe is not as easy to implement booting on.
There is also a train of thought that companies do not want to put a lot of development time into the Powerac G5 PCIe models as some developers believe that the PowerMac Pro (Intel model) will be released in the next 4-6 months with a totally new expansion bus and it will require all new intel software to operate. As this is the case, the PowerMac G5 PCIe market may be limited and developers need to make their dollars back on a stable product cycle.
There are also hints that the new PowerMac Pro (Intel model) may have dual external SATA ports which would allow SATA users to use up to two drives externally without a SATA host adapter. Those that want more ports will purchase a host adapter as well.
The future is bright but the PowerMac G5 Quad appears to be a limited development opportunity for some companies.
In other words - do not expect a bootable SATA host adapter solution for the Quad.

a Dell Precision 690 Workstation, but the problem is that the process
stop in "Sending Queries to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX" where XXX is the ip of
Zenworks Server.
Any idea?

Hi.
Have you got a firewall installed on the OES server?
Give "iptables -L" a try and see what it reports.
Also, please give "tcpdump" (or whatever you're most comfortable with) a
run to see if there are packets along the network.

Can the 1841 router boot from system image from usbdisk?

I have a cisco1841 router with 32M CF card installed.
Now , i want boot a system image larger 32M from usbdisk.
First i insert the 128M usb flash disk to the 1841 router and format it, then i can see the device from dir command.
Second copy the larger ios image from tftp to the usb disk and successed,i can see the image with " dir usbflash0:" command.
Third i use this command "boot system " ,but there is no selection of "usbflash0: "
Does someone tell me that can the cisco 1841 router boot the system image from usb disk when reboot the router.

I have test that ， the 1841 router can boot from usb disk。
but there is a problem that when the router reload.
before the second " program load complete.........................."
there is about 3 minutes to wait.
So , the router boot from usb disk take long time than from CF card.
when use usb disk ,the hole progress of reloading the router will take about 300S.
It's too long .

Booting a Zone from SAN?

I will give details of my case below:
1. I have one critical server (T4-1 with Oracle Solaris 11.1) in production which boots from SAN & require DR. (Server in PRODUCTION place)
2. I have another same model server in DR Location which boots from Internal Disk and having small application running in Global Zone. (Server in DR Location)
My requirement is When Server in Production goes down which boots from SAN and in that scenario I want boot my zone in DR Location Server with the SAME SAN BOOT (which is being used by Production Server).
Is my requirement can be met, is that possible. If not please let me know other all possibilities with process and commands.

You can not use boot device from one server as boot devvice of zone on another server.
You can migrate current producation server to zone or LDOM and use zone or LDOM migration.
Zone migration - via export/import zone.

Dual Boot on Satellite A205-S6808

I tried dual boot on my Satellite A205-S6808. I have installed W7 and I want boot also with XP Pro.The Lap Top does not accept XP Pro.What can be done????

I presume you must load SATA driver before WXP installation starts. Without SATA driver the HDD will not be visible for WXP.
According the notebook specification your notebook has Intel GM965 + Intel ICH8M chipset.
You can try to download this storage manager from http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/stormng-20070827133046.zip
Files from F6flpy > Ich8M_32-bit folder extract to FLOPPY Disc.
When WXP setup starts press F6 and follow the menu on the screen. When necessary load the files using S button.
I hope this will work.
If you don't have floppy disc to load it you can try to create own WXP installations disc using nLite software.
I hope THIS guideline can help you to do this.
I really hope you will have success with dual boot installation.
At the end I must confirm what Jeka wrote. If possible install WXP at first. When you install it as second OS you will not be able to choose between both installed operating systems. Only using BOOT manager you will be able to choose which OS should start. when you install newer OS as second one you will have small menu shown at start-up where you can choose which OS should be loaded.
