As you have good exposure in BI , DP would be a good area to explore. Let me tell you , BPC is the area that might help you more in the long run.
In DP what is going to happen is you may have to read lot of functional processes and get yourself acquainted with mapping them to the system.
If you are bent on APO then spend sometime with DP. Before that first read Forecasting and if you google this word you can see lots of good sites. Please let me know if I can be of any help.

What is CIF?
1) Check and ensure that same qRFC versions and supplements are used in both R/3 and APO Side. Make sure that latest available qRFC Version and supplement is being used.
2) Review the Integration models used currently and identify if they can be reorganized to reduce the duplication?
3)Review the background processes for Activation and generation of the integration models.
4)Identify if there are any bottlenecks in the CIF queues.
5)Review the process of transferring the Product/Material master changes? Are the change pointers being used or BTE's?
6)Review and check the schedule of the following background jobs: (Which transaction we use to do these functions?)
Deleting old integration models?
Deleting old application logs.
Processing of change pointers.
Deletion of old change pointers.
Live Cache consistency Check jobs.
Planning area consistency checks.
Reorganize OMS Data (/SAPAPO/OM_REORG_DAILY and /SAPAPO/OM_DELETE_OLD_SIMSESS)

Need help on SAP APO

Hi,
We are in process of evaluating SAP APO for one of our subsidiaries which is into computer AMC business.
I undersatand that SAP APO has a service part management module and i need some clarity on certain functionality aspects of the product, for example
- Does SAP APO manage alternate part list?
- Does it compute reorder level for spares and also can it provide ROL for multiple plant location
- Does it compute ROL considering the Alternate Parts Availability?
- Does the system consider spares reparability factor while planning for spares?
- Does the spares planning logic modeled on consumption of spares or on some other logic?
We are currently on SAP R/3 ECC 6.0.
Standard MM & SD modules are used for the subsidiary in discussion.
FI is also used but posting is done only for few cases as it is under control of corporate Finance.

Archiving SAP APO

Hi
I have got the information from SAP help on what are the archiving objects that can be used to archive SAP-APO. I came to know that SAP APO is a separate box. If I need to archive the data from SAP-APO using the corresponding archiving objects, do we have SARA t-code in the SAP-APO box? Or if we want to run the Archive programs thru R/3, how can we communicate SAP-APO with our external R/3 which has got SARA active.

I have identified, there are no archiving objects specific to application area "XF - Planning".
If we have SAP APO in a separate system, can anyone tell me the best practice to follow for Data Archiving.
As, I have new system in place and donot have data to analyze, please suggest me a list of Archiving Objects to be implemented in such scenario.

We maintain Business System Group in APO IMG.
IMG >> SCM Basis >>Integration >> Basic Settings for Creating the System Landscape >> Maintai n Business System Group
In this IMG activity, we determine the assignment to a business system group of this system and the ERP systems that are to be connected. By doing this, you create areas with the same naming conventions. These guarantee that the same names are used for master data and also their synchronization in distributed system landscapes.
In addition to the ERP systems, this system too must be assigned to a business system group (BSG) as an independent logical system.
Proedure :
u2022     Choose New Entries.
u2022     On the New Entries: Overview screen, specify the following information for the business system group:
             o     An alphanumerical key (maximum of 10 characters).
             o     A description of your choice
u2022     Save your entries.
Example :
An SCM System is to be connected with the two ERP systems A and B in which two different materials (for example a hammer and a screw), have the same material number (100). The two materials are to be represented as two different products in the SCM system.
Assign The two ERP systems to different BSGs. Assign the SCM system to one of the two BSGs.
u2022     ERP system A (material number 100 = hammer) -> BSG A
u2022     ERP system A (material number 100 = screw) -> BSG B
u2022     SCM system -> BSG A

I have been gathering useful information about SAP SCM and SAP APO (e.g., advanced supply chain planning, master data and transaction data for advanced planning, demand planning, cross-plant planning, production planning and detailed scheduling, deployment, global available-to-promise (global ATP), CIF (core interface), SAP APO DP planning tools (macros, statistical forecasting, lifecycle planning, data realignment, data upload into the planning area, mass processing u2013 background jobs, process chains, aggregation and disaggregation), and PP/DS heuristics for production planning).
I am especially interested about best practices, tips and recommendations for using and developing SAP SCM and SAP APO. Apart from what DB has suggested. you should give a good reading on the following.
-Consulting Notes (use the application component filters in search notes)
-Collective Notes (similar to the one above)
-Release Notes
-Release Restrictions
-If $$ permit subscribe to www.scmexpertonline.com. Good perspective on concepts around SAP SCM.
-There are a couple of blogs (e.g. www.apolemia.com) .. but all lack breadth.. some topics in depth.
-"Articles" section on this site (not all are classified well.. see in ECCops, mfg, SCM, Logistics etc)
-Serivce.sap.com- check the solution details overview in knowledge exchange tab. There are product presentations and collaterals for every release. Good breadth but no depth.
-Building Blocks - available for all application areas. This is limited to vanilla configuration of just making a process work and nothing more than that.
-Get the book "Sales and Operations Planning with SAP APO" by SAP Press. Its got plenty of easy to follow stuff, good perspective and lots of screen shots to make life easier.
-help.sap.com the last thing that most refer after all "handy" options (incl. this forum) are exhausted. Nevertheless, this is the superset of all "secondary" documents. But the maze of hyperlinks that start at APO might lead you to something like xml schema.
Key Tip: Appreciate that SAP SCM is largely driven by connected execution systems (SAP ECC/ERP). So the best place to start with should be a good overview of ERP OPS solution overview, at least at the significant level of depth.). Check this document at sdn wiki "ERP ops architecture overview".
I have some good collection of documents though many i havent read myself. If you need them let me know.

...and assess the ones in the UK which does include Brunel.
Ask if they provide SAP-related curricula (or supplements) and hands on SAP software in this course or others that you can take in your program.
