Want more battery power? Read this!

Alright, I'm not getting any money from this, I'm not advertising, I'm just writing this to help fellow-iPod users.
I always thought that 2 hours of video playback on my 30 gig 5G iPod was not enough for travelling and I wanted some more power for it. I began searching and found the BTI ii battery pack for iPod. At first I wasn't sure if I had to buy it or not, because it was compatible with iPod mini, photo en 3rd en 4th gen iPods. Of course the compatibilitylist only contained the iPods it had the perfect holders for, but that proved to be not really a problem later on. I took the risk of buying it for less than 50 dollars at radioshack and tried it out as soon as I got it. I got 16 hours and 37 minutes of additional video-playback on my 30 gig iPod. I was really amazed, this was wonderful.
I tried the holders that came with it, and one fitted rather good. There was still some place left, but my iPod never came loose.
I heard about BTI releasing a 5G holder in January, but I got mine in December, so I don't have that holder.
I hope this helps you guys when you look for more power to feed your iPod with, and let me know if you have any questions, or when you tried it yourself.

Oh, I also found anothe batery that you can plug in that will give you another 100 hours of play time.

I'm searching for ways to improve battery power
and...
1. Artworks consumes more battery power
significantly?
Very insignificantly... to such a tiny degree that it's not an issue.
2. If we found a program that equalize (ROCK for
example) all mp3 before copy to iPOD, it discards EQ
on iPOD to improve power?
Good idea???
If that's what you want, then I guess it's a good idea. Be aware that raising the eq level also increases the volume. iPods distort extremely easily when the volume going into the amplifier exceeds a certain level.
Once you've run your eq software, be sure to use a piece of software called mp3gain on your files after you do your eq. It will analyze your files and completely losslessly adjust the volume, without even modifying the song bitstream data - magic! This software can handle mp3's by default, and AAC files if you add something else.
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/
But before anyone else thinks of running mp3gain on their mp3's or AAC's... DON'T do it for files that have already been imported into iTunes if you use the 'sound check' feature!!!!!!

• What actually uses more battery power - WiFi or 3G ?

I've read conflicting thoughts, so I wanted to ask which actually uses more battery power - WiFi or 3G ?
Does anyone leave WiFi disabled all the time?

Thanks for all your responses. I suspected WiFi used more power and you guys confirmed that.
BTW - Michael, 0.5 watts is 500 milliwatts... so you're off base with the comparison of the couple-of-hundred milliwatts for wifi vs. 0.5-1.0 watts for 3G. Excuse me... I used to be an engineer

• Macbook no more battery power, message displaying mac os x quit unexpected

I had written a topic earlier saying that my macbook was not powering up because i had apparently no more battery power left. when i plug it in to the wall, a message comes up saying mac os x has quit unexpectedly, would you like to send a report... a person answered me saying that i was closing the lid before it was totally closed, and my battery was getting drained. So, finally, i keep making sure my macbook is totally closed before shutting the lid. But it happened to me again today!!! called applecare made me shut it down and press power button for 5 seconds. Im not really confident that this is going to fix my problem? Has this happened to anyone??? Please help me!

well i just called applecare, and he made me shut it down with no battery in it or power cord, and he made me press the power button for 5 seconds, so im gonna see what that does, but i dont really know if thats gonna work, why did he make me do that? he wasnt very friendly and didnt really explain anything

• Which drains more battery power, Wi Fi or 3G?

If you had these on independently Which drains more battery power Wi Fi or 3G?

You can read Apple's recommendations on iPhone batteries here:
http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
From the specs: iPhone 3G offers up to 5 hours of talk time on 3G...6 hours of Internet use on Wi-Fi. Not stated there is that internet use on 3G is less than the 5 hours of talk time...

• IPhone not charging and using more battery power while on charger and getting hot

I have an iPhone 4 and have had issues with it charging. This has happened 3-4 times over the past few months, where I put it on the wall charger prior to going to sleep and wake up with 17-20% battery power. Last night I placed it on the charger with approximately 70% battery power. I believe it charged to 100%, I left it on the charger and when I woke this morning the phone was hot (hotter than charging it with the USB) and the power was at 17%. Any suggestions on what I can do to rectify this issue? After the iOS upgrade it did and I reset the phone, ran the power completely out and charged 100%. I don't have any more apps open than usual. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Having a similar problem with my 3G IPhone. Battery life is fine but once I plug it in to charge it won't charge. I have to reset my phone and then it will start to charge as long as I unplug it and then plug it in again. This problem is something that is intermittent. I reinstalled the firmware but the problem did not go away. Something that I have noticed is that when this takes place usually the GPS function cannot find my current location at the same time. Once the phone is rest the GPS is fine. The fact that I have reloaded the firmware and the problem has not gone away leads me to think that this is a hardware problem. Well we will see soon I am going to take it in to get checked out. This is sort of annoying but I love the IPhone it is great!!!!

• How can i see which apps in my ipad consume more battery power

I noticed lately the power consumption on my ipad 3 has gone considerably up. A full charge lasts me about 8 hrs and to chrge it upm(through the mains), it takes 4hrs +. I downloaded many apps lately and suspect one of them may be power hungry. Is there a good App that allows me to establish which app(s) eat up the power on my Ipad 3 & equally allow me to terminate unnecessary processes?
Any suggestions folks?

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Why does Magic Mouse use much more battery power than the keyboard?

I have the Bluetooth versions of the keyboard and the Magic Mouse. I use the same rechargeable batteries in each. Yet the mouse has now come to the end of a THIRD set of AAs, while the keyboard still has 60% of its first set.
Why? They are both constantly in use, so why does the Mouse drain batteries so much faster than the keyboard? Viz: the mouse about once a week (two, max), while at this rate, it will be another month or more before the keyboard drains.

Actually I don't! I consider myself a 'power user' in that I will always use the keyboard first, and I learn keyboard shortcuts for nearly everything I do regularly.
I would guess my use is 50:50 at worst?

You can call Apple. The number is 1-888-FACETIME. Yes, it is 11 digits.

Your post has nothing to do with my post...
As for YOUR post...
Most people don't know the true definition of multitasking, and the difference between multitasking and backgrounding.
On a phone, you can't multitask with anything except music. On a computer, you can watch a movie, monitor an IM conversation you are having with a friend and type up a document for work/school.
On a phone? NO.
Apple is ONLY calling this multitasking because people are sheep and too stupid to realize that you CAN'T multitask on a mobile device, ESPECIALLY ON A CELL PHONE.
What we are actually doing is backgrounding, and when you get down to the heart of how the backgrounding works, it makes people's heads try to explode. They try to understand it, but those who aren't technically inclined blow up the whole definition out of proportion. Also, developers are the reasons why apps don't multitask, NOT Apple (although Apple shoulda' gotten on the ball with backgrounding sooner).
Pretty much, there are 7 APIs that are available to devs, if they want to keep running a service in the background. This is much more efficient, because if you can't see the application, what is the point of still having it run??? It should ONLY keep the SERVICE open that it needs.
As for the "multitasking", as long as the dev recompiles their app against the new 4.0 SDK (they don't have to change any code, merely open it in the new SDK and recompile it), the app will then "freeze" itself in the state it is in when the end user hits the Home button. Then, when the user goes back the app, it will "unfreeze" itself and to the end user, it will seem as if it was never closed.
As for the system handing this, if an app is opened that needs more memory than is available, it will look at the frozen apps, and will find the one that you used LAST (the "least recently used" algorithm) and will close that one, and thus, the CPU and memory that it needs to run the new app will be obtained.
However, the end user who wants to understand but doesn't, won't understand this. I don't like when I hear people complaining about this issue.
Here is a link to the 7 backgrounding APIs.

• Under battery power supply Tecra A7 works slowly

I have a notebook TECRA A7, and I have some problem with the battery. When I don't use alimentation AC, the notebook gets too slowly with programs like Netbeans.
How can I solve this problem?

Hello
To save battery power and allow longer notebook usage Toshiba has designed Toshiba power saver tool. As you can see there are few different power profile available. If you use battery power supply it will be automatically switch to Normal profile and there is CPU speed set to lower level. You can change it manually and set to maximum performance.
NetBeans software is not known to me but it is possible that notebook runs slowly if software needs more CPU power.

• Incorrect power reading?

Several times in recent weeks, my MBP has a battery reading of ~20% or so and suddenly dies. I don't get the standard warning message before it dies, either. It doesn't seem to be dying quicker than it has in the past, it just seems like the battery reading is incorrect.
A few weeks ago, I took my MBP into Apple for a power cable and recharging issue (the l-shaped power adapter wasn't working with my older MBP). During the troubleshooting process, the employee unplugged the battery itself and reset my power settings. Could that have had an effect on the battery power reading itself? Is there a way to fix this at home?
Thanks!

Have you ever calibrated your battery(ies) per Apple's instructions? This is necessary to ensure the battery and your MacBook are in sync. Battery calibration basically involves fully discharging and then fully charging your battery. This lets your MacBook accurately estimate how much time is remaining on a charge. If you have not ever calibrated your battery, your MacBook may "think" it has more time than it really does so you never actually get the warning before the battery runs out:

• What uses more battery: Push or Fetch?

I have recently downloaded MobileMe and using it mainly to add / edit my contacts and callender.
Im just wondering, which setting will be best for me, Push or Fetch?
I'll only be editing things on MobileMe about once a day, so is it best to use Push? I.e only using the connection when its needed.
Is it fair to say that Fetch uses more battery life because its connecting more frequently and often for no new data?
Hope this makes sense!
Thanks
James

Push uses more battery power. The second bit of advice from Apple increasing battery life is to turn off Push (the third is to reduce the Fetch frequency).
Fetch, at most, can check every 15 minutes. Push must ping the server frequently to maintain a 'live' connection, so updates can be pushed to the phone as soon as they hit the server.
In your case, Jim's advice seems best - just turn off Push, set Fetch to Manual and check when you like.

• Expose stutters on battery power

Hi Everyone,
I have a new 17-inch MBP with the 2.4 GHz Santa Rosa chip set and NVIDIA-powered graphics (256 MB). I have had the machine for about a week and a half and have noticed that Expose stutters and is choppy when I am using the computer on battery power. The stuttering is intermittent, occurs only if expose hasn't been triggered in a while, and seems to clear-up temporarily when Expose is activated several times in rapid succession. Furthermore, this issue is not limited just to Expose and affects Dashboard (it skips as it fades in) and my mouse pointer too. I have a Logitech MX510 laser mouse that is driven by SteerMouse. When I'm on battery power, the pointer is jumpy and skips from location to location. All of these issues disappear the instant my machine is plugged back into the mains.
I have found at least 2 other posts on the forums here describing similar symptoms, but no solutions or workarounds have been offered. I have run the Apple Hardware Test (all is fine), repaired permissions, reset the SMC, zapped PRAM, run Onyx maintenance scripts... all the usual suspects. I've also tried every power management setting offered in the Energy Saver Preference pane. However, Expose, Dashboard, and my mouse pointer still lag and are still choppy when on battery power. This issue is absent on my PowerBook G4. Perhaps this is a driver issue for the new GeForce GPU...?
Is there anyone else experiencing this? Anyone have any thoughts?
Your comments and replies are most welcome.

Hi!
I'm seeing the same thing on my 2.2GHz. My guess is that the GPU (Graphics processor) has gone into power-saving mode and therefore is severely down-clocked. Since exposé and dashboard can require quite a bit of graphics power to run smoothly the animation can become choppy. Once exposé has been activated, the os/drivers/GPU realizes that more processing power is needed and the GPU clocks up to normal clock-speeds again. The second time exposé is triggered the GPU is ready for the increased load and the animation goes smooth.
Since the power-saving is unnecessary while plugged in to the mains the problems only occur while on battery. As a user there is really noting you can do about it.
