Want Time Capsule far away from my modem. How to add to existing Airport?

Hi,
I have a dome-shaped Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) connected to a Comcast modem. I want to leave it as it is, but I would like my Time Capsule (TC), to be located far away from the modem, to "join" or "extend" that AEBS network.
I had it set up that way at one point, but then switched out the TC drive to a new 2 TB and then connected it directly through Ethernet to my two MacBooks to back them up more quickly. (FYI, I upgrade MB drives a lot and they aren't always recognized immediately by the TC, sometimes have to delete a sparsebundle and start a new backup--why I have to do that for it to work sometimes, no idea). But after backing up my new MB drives over Ethernet, I can't now for the life of me seem to get both the AEBS and TC onto one AEBS network. My Airport Express joins the AEBS just fine to play music, but not the TC anymore. It only gives me the "extend" option and then tells me that my AEBS "cannot be extended."
My dome-shaped AEBS lists version 5.7 and was WEP 128 secured, but I tried WPA2 Personal most recently as the TC didn't list a WEP 128 option in Airport Utility. The TC lists version 7.4.2. I have the AEBS set to b/g and the TC to its full range.
I know how to use my Mac pretty well, but I only mess with setting up Airports or TCs once a year at the most. I don't know how all of the moving parts work or work together. Various dialogue boxes will confuse the ** out of me. YET when setting up the TC originally somehow there was an option to have the TC "join" the AEBS network, not sure if since updates have removed that ability. Only since replacing the drive and turning off the TCs wireless settings to make it work over Ethernet, has the TC no longer been willing to join the AEBS.
I don't want to be a networking master, I just want to be able to configure my network quickly and easily so my less valuable (to me) AEBS will be in my living room with my modem while my entire electronic life is backed up safely in the attic to my TC that stay out of sight from thieves, etc. You'd think Apple would have built-in this ability MUCH more easily than they have! What's the point of having your only backup sitting right in the living room in the middle of all products you're backing up? If your laptops are valuable enough to steal, so is the shiny white Apple box underneath your TV. And then you have no data, no photos, no memories.
OK, done editorializing. Anyone know how to walk me through getting this BACKWARDS TC/Airport setup running? And anyone know how I could then revert to Ethernet if I want a faster connected backup sometime and then jump right back to my BACKWARDS wireless setup? Tremendously grateful for any help!

My Airport Express joins the AEBS just fine to play music, but not the TC anymore. It only gives me the "extend" option and then tells me that my AEBS "cannot be extended."
When configuring the TC with the AirPort Utility, you just need to hold down the Option key before making the selection in order to get access to the "Join a wireless network" choice.
First off, WEP is no longer considered secure, so it is highly recommended that you use either WPA or WPA2 for security. However, if you must use WEP, you would have to change the Radio Mode on the TC to one of the non-"n" choices in order to configure it for WEP 64- or 128-bit.
YET when setting up the TC originally somehow there was an option to have the TC "join" the AEBS network, not sure if since updates have removed that ability.
Again, holding down the Option key will provide this option. It was not removed with any of the firmware updates.

  • MB Pro tries to connect to Time Capsule when away from home network resulting in annoying error message - how do I fix this?

I have a 13" MB Pro late 2011 model running Mountain Lion with 2.5 ghz and 8 GB ram. I have a TC setup at home as wireless network and my phones, ipads, PCs, and MB Pro all connect to it with no problem. The problem is when I leave home and connect to another wireless network my MB Pro tries to connect to the TC about every 15 seconds and a message pops up saying it could not connect to the server "Time Capsule" and it forces me to click ok. As you can imagine, clicking ok every 15 seconds makes it impossible to use the computer. I have tried turning off time machine but it makes no difference.
I have tried to read other posts and could not find the answer. Only reason I state this is because I once asked a question and there was another post out there and several got mad at me. I'm just trying to figure this out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

oh i already did that. Im working on my imac and looking into this on my macbook. Was able to reproduce the issue again by trying to open TM. Locked out the finder again and had to restart. I checked the serial number and it was an early 2009 purchase with no coverage.
If you bought a Mac and got AppleCare with it, within 2 years of buying the TC, the TC is covered, too.
I have to admit that this $500 unit was the first to apparently junk out. The western digital that had my main data on that is my daily external that I store about 2TB of data on is still perfect and the new technology TM appears to already be cashed. Love the computers, not to big of a fan on the externals of the apple TV's. No life expectancy. Neither here nor there.
suggestions before I either get this looked at or scrap the HD on it and move forward.?
Reset the TC. See [Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728].
Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If all else fails, take it to your local Apple Store or Authorized Repair location, they may be able to determine whether the disk is dead.
If it is, they might replace the TC for you. If not, they won't repair it, but if the electronics are ok, you can replace the HD yourself, if you want to. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2542983

  • How far away from base station can I get with Wi-Fi?

I want to know how far away from my base station I can get with my iPod touch's Wi-Fi. I can't test it out since it is still shipping, but I would like to know, since I will be travelling a lot with it. I know you can connect it to hotels, restaurants, etc. that have Wi-Fi, but say there's none of them around (since I live in central Nebraska). How far do you really think I can go?

I hope you only 'travel' around your house. That's about as far as you can go before losing your wifi connection. Alright, might work in the backyard. Seriously, check the range of your router. Mine covers 200 feet, more than enough for my apartment. Certainly not enough to travel and remain connected.

  • Time Capsule bringing down my internet modem.

Time Capsule bringing down my internet modem.
I have been having issues for several weeks where my internet modem loses its connection (often the Time Capsule wireless network would continue but without its connection to the internet since my cable modem was down).  I replaced my cable model with Time Warner but the problem continued where I would routinely lose the internet and have to unplug the modem and router several times to get it working again.
I tried removing the router from the equation and connected my laptop directly to the router via Ethernet cable.  This seemed to work and the internet modem no longer dropped the connection.  It seems the problem is some combination of the internet modem and time capsule router, though I have been using the same Time Capsule router for over a year with no issue.
I used Airport Utility to restore the factory settings on my Time Capsule and reconfigure the network from scratch.  Once again the wireless and modem seemed to work together for an hour or so and then the modem dropped the internet again.
I can keep unplugging the modem and router every time this happens but there must be something causing a conflict somewhere.   Any suggestions of things I may try to fix or diagnose the issue between the modem and the router?

Is the cable modem you have also a router?
If it is a pure modem I don't really see how a TC can pull it down.
Can you get any access to the TC in the state when there is no internet? Can you check if the WAN still has IP address via utility.
You need to use the v5 utility btw to get any useful troubleshooting info. For Lion just download and install it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Check the Log for any info there.. keep your eye on it if you cannot access the TC once it goes bad,, you need to try and get the info prior to failure.
How old is the TC? What model.. please the A1xxx model from the rubber mat.
If you have A1355 ie Gen3 there is a chance you are seeing the ethernet ports failing due to internal power supply problems.
I think a Gen4 is still too new to see this problem.

  • Regarding the product time capsule...is the modem the same as airport extreme and is the disk drive always running? I'm worried about it lasting for at least five years.

    John,
I'd pay good money to bet it wouldn't last 5 years... I don't rate the in built power supply and as for "server grade hard disk" - Hmmmm..... The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%.

System Version:          Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549). can I take out the wifi card from that mack and use that one for my mac air?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Consider yourself lucky that your MacBook is still working. Now, turn it off. Wine may have damaged other parts of your computer.
Then, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. It will be a very expensive repair, as it's not covered by warranty and the logic board has to be replaced. In some cases, it may be better to get a new MacBook.
If you can't take it to an Apple Store, contact with Apple > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

    Hi shldr2thewheel,
it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Sincerely in need of help once again,
    Kim

I shot a video using my iPad 2, and it is too far away from the subject. How do I zoom in and save the whole video like that? Thanks!

Sorry to be such a moron with this, but I just don't have much experience with this iPad.  I have had it for over a year and I just keep adding stuff to it and it has worked great.  Now that the memory is used up, I am trying to figure out how to free up space and not lose what I have paid for.
So, Step 1 is complete, as I have "Transferred" all of the purchases.
What is Step 2?  I unchecked the concert on the iTunes library, did a sync, but it's still on my iPad.
    Thanks again for the help!!!

  • Hi iv got a sky router downstairs and a time capsule up stairs how do i set it up so that it just extends the sky wifi and then the hard drive in the time capsule is accessible from all over the house thanks

hi iv got a sky router downstairs and a time capsule up stairs how do i set it up so that it just extends the sky wifi and then the hard drive in the time capsule is accessible from all over the house thanks

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the back of the Sky router to the WAN (circle of dots icon) port on the back of the Time Capsule. This connection must be maintained at all times.
Then, using the setup "wizard" on your iMac illustrated below, configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name and password that the Sky router is using.
You can get the setup wizard going in several different ways, but the simplest might be to click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen and then click on Time Capsule under the heading of New AirPort Base Station.
The wizard will open up and analyze the network, then the suggest the correct setup. The example below shows an older AirPort Express that is about to be setup in the same way. You will see a Time Capsule icon on your screen when you run the setup wizard.

  • When i duplicate an object, it moves it far away from where my original object is as soon as i move it. is there any way to fix this?

when i duplicate an object in numbers, it moves it far away from where my original object is as soon as i move it. is there any way to fix this? thanks

    Hi Rick,
Your initial duplicate should be offset by one grid unit to the right and below the location of the original. If you move that duplicate by dragging it, without first de-selecting it, then reselecting it, the place you put it will determine the offset for subsequent duplicates (from the same original or from the copy).
    Example:
    Initial object and first duplicate:
Pressing shift-up arrow would move the duplicate up to align with the top of the original. Pressing shift-left arrow would then place the duplicate directly in front of the original.
Without being deselected, the duplicate was dragged to the position shown:
Command-D was then pressed to duplicate the first copy:
The duplicate appeared in this position

    Barry

  • How far away from a cabinet is deemed 'too far' fo...

    Hi
    Can anyone answer this question:
How how far is too far away from a cabinet to get Infinity ?
    Thanks
    Ollie

    Hi again ollie44,
BT Retail who offers FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) BT Infinity which is their brandname for fibre broadband, to customers who are estimated 15mbps or above for FTTC.
You can still get FTTC fibre broadband from BT Retail if you are estimated under 15mbps for FTTC though the product is called Faster Unlimited broadband.
FTTC fibre broadband currently enables a upto 80mbps broadband service, though this will depend on how far away you are from the FTTC cabinet and the quality of your landline.
FTTC fibre broadband uses VDSL or VDSL2 signals that travel from the FTTC cabinet to your property via the existing copper (sometimes aluminium) line. The further away you are from your FTTC cabinet the slower the fibre FTTC broadband will be.
However VDSL/2 signals used for FTTC broadband connection degrade far quicker in terms of distance than conventional ADSL broadband signal do.
Generally speaking if your landline is over 1500 meters in length from the FTTC cabinet to your property then you may not be able to get BT Infinity as you may not be able to achieve over 15mbps from an FTTC service.
Here is a graph that shows the ADSL(G.DMT,ADSL2 and ADSL2+) and VDSL/2 (FTTC) signal with distance. Please be aware that all ADSL connections are depend on distance from local exchange, where as FTTC (VDSL/2) connections are depend on distance from your FTTC (DSLAM) cabinet. Though all connection types are also depend on line quality.
