Want to add 500 BG HD, any heat issues

I currently have 160 GB, 20" iMac G5 rev.a with no problems. I'm running out of HD space quickly due to home video projects. I'm thinking of getting a 500 GB seagate drive to replace it. I'll then use the 160 gig drive as a external backup for select files.
I was told by someone on http://www.ehmac.com that a large capacity drive might generate too much heat.
Should I be worried?

This is a valid concern.
Rather than worry about the issue of whether it will kill the drive, I would worry about the computer.
To replace the hard drive, you have to remove screws that are not approved by Apple for removal. And, you may have to disconect the temperature sensor.
So, if the drive over-heats, you may be able to get the drive replaced. But, if the computer is damaged by the heat, it will be very easy for Apple to back out of the warranty since you tampered with the system.
Essentially, they only have to guarantee that it will work as shipped. If you introduce another item into the environment that causes damage, then they can easily make you pay for the repair (and those logic boards cost $700 to $900).
I'd play it safe and keep the internal drive original to the system and then get an external drive for storage.
Just my thoughts on the subject.

  • I want to know if there's any software issues on my macbook

I have mountain lion and really want to know if I have any software issues.

First of all, run software update. They should have done this in the Apple store, but who knows.
Secondly, go through all your 3rd party apps that are not from the App Store (if any). Visit the developer's websites to check for updates or use the apps' built in 'Updates' function (usually in the File or Help menu of the app).
Thirdly, remove everything from your login items here:
     > System Preferences... > Users & Groups | Login Items
By 'remove' I mean highlight the apps in the list and click the - minus button underneath (do not check the 'Hide' box). This doesn't remove them from your computer - it just stops them running when your computer logs into your account.
After removing all, restart the computer and test to see if the problem remains.

  • Have any heat issues been fixed in the new MBPs

I'm interseted in buying a new MBP. Does anyone know if any of the heat issues been fixed in the latest MBPs? And are the GPU's still underclocked?

Nicolas, I've got a week 12 MBP and have never considered it to have a heat problem.
Just made another 15 minute run of System Load with both CPUs at 100%. The CPU temp momentarily hit 78 C, then the fans kicked in (quietly) and the temperature stabilized at 73 C.
The current CPU temperature is 51 C, which is normal for routine writing, Web browsing and downloading to my database. When I'm doing database work that frequently but for only brief bursts pegs the CPUs, the temps run in the high 50s to low 60s C. On battery power, the temps drop several degrees C.
The computer remains comfortable to use at all times. Note: I use it on an aluminum tilt stand, whether on my desk or in my lap.
Haven't done the "grease fix" and don't plan to.

  • Aluminum Mid-2007 iMac HDD upgrade-will a 7200 WD Bla cause any heat issues

My iMac currently has a 250GB Factory 5200rpm HDD, and is off of warranty. I am running out of space and I need to upgrade. I have picked out a Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black 7200rpm SATA II w/ 32MB Cache. I have heard this HDD model runs hot sometimes, and my concern is do I need to worry about heat issues? I have seen iMacs with burned screens from heat. I have never upgraded a Aluminum iMac HDD before and any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

You could download smcFanControl and independently regulate the fan speeds more efficiently to compensate for the increased heat by increasing the airflow through your iMac. Especially from the HDD fan.

  • IMac Aluminium - any heat issues?

I'm pondering getting an iMac and the main thing that concerns me - apart from the graphics card being less powerful than a 7600GT - is how hot the iMac seemed to be in the shop. The white ones were a lot cooler. This may be to the screen being slimmer, but I wondered if this was likely to be an issue. For example, would the heat be likely to make the iMac's components last not as long as a white iMac?

    Armand45 Sez:
Yes, I've noticed that my machine seems to run hot also. My hard drive reads at 54 degrees farenhiet. VERY warm at the top of the machine. The top back half of the machine is very warm, but the bottom half is cool. I hear no fans, not that I would want to. But I am concerned about the heat.
I sez: 54 degrees Farenheit can not be right. I hope you mean 54 C.
If you are concerned, install iStat and check your fan speeds and temperatures after a few activities, like burning a disk or playing a game or reading email. A lot of people are concerned about the heat. We have new iMacs that there is no common knowledge base for yet. In a few weeks we will all know that the fan speeds of 700, 1200 and 1200 are common for a new Intel iMac at rest, that the fans are silent and all three fans should run constantly, and that temperatures for CPU, hard drive and optical drive should normally be between 55 and 62 Celsius... or maybe not !
Maybe soon there will be a FAQ document from Apple addressing our concerns indicating what constitutes normal fan and temperature operating conditions for these models so we will know when ours are not quite right.

  • Heating issue lenovo a6000 plus

What is the normal temperature of A6000 Plus ??

Hi,i have observed the same issue with my Lenovo A6000 Plus.I inserted memory card (7GB was full out of 8GB) loaded with images, songs, videos etc.Phone started heating up badly just like heater when i launch gallery app to check images & videos. but it failed to load images. Then i checked music app to play some sound tracks. i faced the same i.e. songs did not get fetch from SD card.I went in battery settings to check what application is consuming battery.  i found that "Mediaserver" application is consuming battery above 70%. Same SD card i inserted in other phones like Motorola. there it works smoothly without any heating issue.I guess lenovo team should fix this problem because eventhough we insert formated SD card, one day it will get full and will face this problem in future too.

  • HT1311 im borrowing a friends ipod touch and want to add apps to it. i signed into my apple account but when i go to the app store it still asks for my friends password even though my apple ID account is signed in. any help?

I'm borrowing a friend's iPod touch until I get another phone and I want to add some apps. I deleted all the apps that weren't needed and then I tried to add some of the apps that I need. I switched the Apple ID account on the iPod and the iCloud account to my own along with all the other apps (Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, mail, YouTube, etc.) When i go to the Apple app store and try and update or download a new app it still asks for the old password. How do I get it so when I try and download new stuff it asks for MY password?

It is showing updates because your machine is tied to the original purchase and will remain so until you wipe the drive.
As you purchased it used and the seller obviously did not do what he was supposed to do and that is erase the hard drive and reinstall the original system, you will run in to far more difficult problems when you need to reinstall for whatever reason. The new licensing requirements are that any mac is sold with the original OS - any OS or app obtained at the app store is NOT transferable and the buyer needs to purchase their own license. That means you will not be able to reinstall the OS.
At some point, you will need to try to get either the original install disks (from the seller or Apple) and wipe your drive and reinstall. Then you can download your own licensed copy of Mavericks and any apps you want.

  • I shifted from a windows to a mac.. I want to add songs to my ipod tpuch 4th gen.. but if i try to sync with itunes it says my songs will be replaced by the new songs.. Is there any way that i can have my previous data safe??

i shifted from a windows to a mac.. I want to add songs to my ipod tpuch 4th gen.. but if i try to sync with itunes it says my songs will be replaced by the new songs.. Is there any way that i can have my previous data safe??

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.

Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

Hi bgardnerG5, and a warm welcome to the forums!
WD Caviar Black 2 TB Internal hard drive...

A WD Caviar Bue would do also, but only has a 3 year warranty, the Black has a 5 year warranty.

  • Firefox 4.0 is clunky with big ugly buttons. It looks bulky and busy. How do I keep 4.0 but with the look of the previous version? I have the default look and I don't want to add any backgrounds or any themes.

How do I streamline all the 4.0 features, but without adding any skins, themes or backgrounds? Basically I want to keep the default of the previous Firefox version as this new 4.0 is ugly and bulky and it does not make for smooth navigation. I don't want to add any customizations that will slow down my computer so I want it like the previous version. I would rather try to correct this than go back to a previous version. Thanks.

Thanks for the article. I've done some of the suggestions but it is still not the same....Does anyone else miss the status bar? Even with installing the add on for it, it did not work for me. Overall, the article suggestions made a definite improvement. What was Mozilla thinking with this version? But thanks for pointing me to that article!

Apple specifically did not enable ipod to computer transfer so as to prevent people from getting music from friends (which in the majority of cases is illegal).

To enable the form to be signed in Reader you will need to open the form in Acrobat; goto Advanced>Enable Usage Rights and then save this copy of the form for sending out to the users.
The user should then be able to edit and digitally sign the form. They can then email the signed/saved pdf as a browsed for attachment or via the email icon in the toolbar. Note - if you have created an email submit button on the form, then unless they have Acrobat they could only return an xml file.
The other way to do this however is to create a dataset by 'distributing' the form. This time the Email Return button will send back a full version of the form. During the distribution setup you will have the option to email the form directly or to save it and send it later,so you can send to users as and when or even post it to a website or intranet.
When you receive and open the returned form it will ask whether you want to add it to the predetermined dataset (or if you want to categorise the returns into geographical areas for example, you could create new additional datasets at this point). If the form is data heavy however, the dataset will become very large and unwieldy pretty quickly, but you can export the data from it (including signatures) in xml format and import this into an Excel spreadsheet.
To simplify the Excel xml import process I'd recommend you carefully structure your form in the hierarchy (LiveCycle) into the order you would want the data items to appear in your spreadsheet and switch off those data items that you will not need by setting the default binding for the irrelevant fields to "None".
Clear as mud? Hope this helps.
