Want to be a DBA

Hi All,
Currently I'm belonging from Telecom Domain as a Network planning past from 3 Years and having big interest in Databases. After achieving Database certification, I searched for DBA positions and didn’t find many. Moreover all the jobs that were listed there asked for at least couple of years of experience. So from where would the fresher start as you know, for fresher it is very challenging to enter in right doors? ... Well here are my questions…
1)     How I come on the DBA or database developer platform?
2)     What challenges face when I enter in this family?
3)     Can my telecom domain experience countable?
These are few questions that I’m searching at the moment… I would appreciate any kind of make easier in regarding this post of mine. It would help me make a career for myself.
Thanks,
Sachin

thanks 4 all ur posting
>>>
The experience from your second position may look good to a lot of potential employers though depending on the level of detail and amount of non-IT tasks involved it may or may not have been a good learning experience
<<<
this is what I do in my previous company. there are huge amount of non-IT tasks involved i must say.. :
IT:
apps dba (support), contracts
non-IT:
secretarial jobs, purchasing executive, corporate risk management, operations etc
IT dept is rather small, only doing support. all developments are outsourced. then the mgmt sees that IT dept got nothing to do when everything is working fine. maybe these sr managers see IT is only about internet, email and repairing PC..
i really love the job, but concurrently my time was wasted on other things. i cannot claim i have extensive knowledge being apps dba. in the mean time finding jobs as apps dba / dba is hard with minimal knowledge and exp, while devoting most of my time doing those non-IT things will get me nowhere.
i would stay if i could focus being apps dba there. there are tonnes of things to be learned. but sometimes life just pushes your around.. or maybe it's just the taste of life
i'm searching & applying for jr apps dba post, even though i'm new here. not a good attitude though. currently concentrating on oracle collaboration suite, during me free time i will educate myself and prepare for certification. and hopefully will let me get what i want. this is what i'm planning rite know.
i always wanted to be successful in my career. i also have ambition like all u guys do. any opinion & suggestions are most welcome. guidance and ideas etc are very much appreciated. thanks

    Hi Apps Gurus,
I am an experienced Core Oracle DBA having 7 years of experience in Oracle Database Administration. I have always been interested in Apps DBA but never got suffient time to pick that up. This time I have taken a months's leave to be able to spend time and gather Apps DBA knowledge. I need a thorough knowledge in Apps including the very basics and architechture. I dont want to jump into advanced skills without having my basics strong. Please guide me with steps/milestones to be identified and achieved. I would appreciate if somebody can give me an idea regarding how much time it generally takes to pick up to a level where the candidate can work as an Apps DBA.
Any suggestion and guidence is appreciated.

  • Need Best way to start learning Oracle 11g  DBA

    Hi.This is Tejaswi.
I want to learn Oracle 11g DBA.I've downloaded all software's and Documentation for Orcl 11g R2. Now. i want to start Learning DBA. Can any one suggest me the best way to Start learning DBA?
Please suggest me the good books For Oracle Architecture and SQL.......

    Hello Tejaswi,
The advice you got about reading the Oracle Concepts and 2 Day DBA documentation is very good advice.
I found that knowing some SQL*Plus and SQL Developer was also very helpful as, they both provide a way to interface with the database and try the things you read about. For SQL Plus, I used the book:
Oracle SQL*Plus: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition
    By Jonathan Gennick
    Publisher : O'Reilly
ISBN : 0-596-00746-9 I openly recommend it. It is easy to read, the book is very well thought out, it covers what you really need to know (and more too). The author explains the subjects very well. I would definitely learn some SQL Plus and SQL developer before getting into the 2 Day DBA document (make those 2 days about 7 days each if not more).
To learn SQL, I "sort of" used (I say "sort of" because I only read some parts of it available online and at the local bookstore):
    Oracle SQL by Example
    By Alice Rischert
Publisher: Prentice Hallit probably has more SQL than you'd need as a DBA but, it is an excellent book you may want to consider.
If you are starting from scratch, as I did, you'll find that you need to learn multiple things at the same time. I believe SQL Plus is the best place to start, along with possibly the Concepts document. That will give you a base to build upon.

    John.

  • Oracle DBA Jobs

    Hello All,
Please don't mind my question if I have violated the purpose of the forum and if so then I am really sorry.
I have been working in Oracle Database Administration since almost 3.4 years. I have mostly worked on Dev-Test Platforms where we maintain zero downtime. I do not have any hands on RAC or much knowledge . I have worked on 10g,11g.
I know the concepts and methods of implementing Data guard (standby), I have worked on RMAN(duplication, incremental backup,complete/incomplete recovery and etc),expdp/impdp and exp/imp, little amount of scripting (SQL/Shell), basic Server management(mostly have exp on Linux), Installation of RDBMS/ASM, Creation of Databases(manually/DBCA), Security(privs, roles, auditing), Tablespace and other logical structure management, HOT backup,Cold backup(and restoration from it), Database upgradation, patching(PSU, one-off,inventory attach/detach), Tracing, SQL Loader, standby monitoring and creation, Database Monitoring and maintenance, segment management and defragmentation, Database object maintenance, Configuration of OEM etc, handling different types of Oracle errors including critical errors like 600,7445 etc... Reading and extracting AWR/ASH..
Can I get a job outside of my present company? As I am not seeing much growth there.. Not even getting to have exposure to other platforms.. Most of the companies want RAC personal.
Please suggest and help me (if possible).. I am really in tension about what will be there in my future as here I will never get to work in RAC and high availibility architecture ..
That is the reason now I am thinking to switch my company for better technological growth..
What areas should I know in this phase of my career. pls suggest.. I am from INDIA
    -Regards
    Struggling DBA

Whether you will get another job is an entirely local matter. Ask a local recruiter how the job market is for DBAs. In my local area (in the US), it seems like there is a decent amount of demand for DBAs, but you might be working in a local economy that is stagnant.
Chances are, in 2013, that any new DBA job will involve some element of database redundancy.
Within a few years, I suspect that most places will have either RAC or Exadata systems for their critical databases. It'll probably take a significant outage before most companies will spend the cash for clustered systems, but they will eventually move that way. Even Oracle's Database Machine is a RAC configuration if you think about it - and that's what they're trying to pitch to the smaller customers.
I remember that about 10 years ago, RAC was rare (I remember installing RAC 9.2.0.1 for a client - boy, that was DIFFICULT). 'All' that you had to do to be a DBA then, was understand single-instance stuff.
Five years later, most DBAs needed to know RAC/ASM/Data Gurd if they wanted to be Production DBAs - they then had to understand single-instance, cluster, ASM and Data Guard stuff.
I can see that within a couple of years, DBAs will have to be competent in Exadata or similar - so they'll need to understand single-instance, cluster, ASM, Data Guard AND Exadata stuff (networking, storage cells, etc).
My point is that the DBA role changes as fast as any tech specialty. Thankfully, Oracle's is making things easier to administer as the technologies we have to master become more complex: I can vouch for how difficult 9.2.0.1 was to set up for RAC - managing an 11.2 system is SO much nicer!
Unless you're working in a place that have no plans to upgrade their databases (due to legacy systems) or to grow as a business, then the chances are you will eventually be exposed to what you're looking for. Of course, if you're working in such a place, then it might be suggested that you're better off finding somewhere else to work. To stand still is to roll backwards, etc....
Good luck. It's good to be ambitious, but don't forget that a DBA role is one that absolutely demands experience - if you've 3 years of being a Production DBA and having to get THAT call in the middle of the night, you've probably got better experience than someone who has spent 6 years as a Development DBA (IMO).

  • I want to learn oracle

Dears i want to learn oracle DBA i m already good in PL/SQL tell me from where i can get daily lesson. plz help me.

    Hello,
For Oracle Applications there is another forum:
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=11
For Learning Oracle Application Server, I'd start with the Oracle Documentation:
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25221_04/index.htm
Look at the "Getting Started" Tab with all of the Quick Installation Guides for your platform. Learn what the different types of installations are and figure out what you need to do what you want.
Once you have an installation and have the basics, there is a certification track for Oracle Application Server that may be a good way to organize your learning.
See Oracle Certifications for more details: Exam#1Z0-311 Oracle Application Server 10g: Administration - http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=60#1
You may also want to check out the following from Oracle Press:
Oracle Application Server 10g Administration Handbook - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0072229586/sr=8-1/qid=1152652226/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-7940473-6400135?ie=UTF8

  • Where can i download the oracle applications software for DBA

    Hi,
I want to know few things regarding oracle applications.
    1) What exactly is oracle applications
    2) Where can i download the oracle applications software
    3) I am currently working as oracle DBA, so i want to enhance the dba skills to oracle application, so where can i find further help, documentation related to oracle applications and dba related to that.

Oracle Applications is an integrated ERP solution, with Finance, Manufacturing and CRM modules. Please visit appsnet for further information.
Unlike other Oracle products, Oracle doesnot give free software downloads for Oracle Applications. They were once giving trial versions for about 40 USD. Now I am not sure, please check up Oracle website www.oracle.com. Look for link on "e-business suite" under the 'products' directory.
If you can get hold of documentation on 11i, you can check out System Administration and Application Object Library (AOL) modules, these fall in your area. You can find this on oracle website or metalink.
Be aware that general Oracle DBA on 8i or 9i is a different ballgame than managing 11i. Lot of websites are available for these harried people, and for more information, you can visit the websites www.appsdba.com, www.oncalldba.com or do a general google search.
If you can get hold of a book "OCP for Oracle Financials 11.0" by Christopher Allen and Vivian Chow, this has good documentation on above two modules. But this is in 11.0, not 11i.
    Hope this helps.

Agathya. You are studying the correct exams to become DBA 11g OCA.
The next stage would be DBA 11g OCP .... but to get the OCP certificate you must prove you attended a specified hands on training course (can be expensive)
See and become familiar with [www.oracle.com/education/certification] which is the definitive reference to these things

  • Can I attend Oracle 10g DBA course & attempt DBA Certification for 11g

    Hi,
I am already OCP-PLSQL and want to attempt OCP-DBA stream. I enquired at various oracle education centers and came to know that all are conducting courses for Oracle-10g.
So can I attend Oracle 10g DBA course (Mandatory Course) and attempt DBA Certification for 11g. (1ZO-052 and 1ZO-053)
    Thanks,

    Thanks,
Vikrant PatilYou can do these thing, and Oracle will take your money for it, but you will receive neither 11g DBA OCP certication nor 10g DBA OCP Certification at the end of it. So it isnt what you would ant to do.
Oracle Unviersity would provide the 11g DBA training courses ... No problem.
however I suspect what you term oracle education centers are probaby institutes offering WDP Courses at 10g DBA (on the cheap). See http://workforce.oracle.com
If you do 10g training then that will only be valid for 10g DBA OCP Certification .. so you would need to take 1z0-042 and 1z0-043 (I guess you already have an SQL Exam pass). Then 1z0-050 can upgrade it to 11g DBA OCP.
(Note that it does not affect you, but the converse is typically true .... version X+1 training will often be acceptable for a version X certification.)

  • Oracle 10g dba...

i have cleared sql and pl/sql module in oracle 9i and became OCA.now i want to get OCP. if i do oracle 10g workshop 1 and workshop 2 for OCP(10g).does this combination compatible to be an OCP in ORACLE 10g.

If you hold a 9i DBA OCA, you will need to go on to obtain your 9i DBA OCP. You cannot go directly from 9i DBA OCA to 10g DBA OCP.
Option 1 (in no particular order):
    - Already holds 9i DBA OCA (please check your account at certview.oracle.com to confirm that you hold this certification)
    - Pass exam 1Z0-032
    - Pass exam 1Z0-033
    - Complete one of the approved training classes for 9i DBA OCP (http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=244#1)
    - Submit the Course Submission Form at www.pearsonvue.com/oracle to provide your course details for verification
This will get you to 9i DBA OCP
    - Pass exam 1Z0-040 to upgrade from 9i DBA OCP to 10g DBA OCP
Option 2: If you don't want to pursue 9i DBA OCP and want to go directly to 10g DBA OCP, you'll need to follow the path below:
    - Pass one of the following 3 exams: 1Z0-007, 1Z0-051, 1Z0-047
    - Pass exam 1Z0-042
This will get you to 10g DBA OCA
    - Pass exam 043
    - Complete one of the approved training classes for 10g DBA OCP (http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=244#3)
    - Submit the Course Submission Form at www.pearsonvue.com/oracle to provide your course details for verification

  • Need Oracle DBA  Job

    Hi All,
This Karnan, i have finished BCA(Computer Application) 2008, and i did oracle9i DBA OCP,
I was not able to get into Oracle DBA as a fresher.
Finally Nov-2009, i got job in POLARIS SOFTWARE LAB ltd., as Software Tester.
I'm very much passion about in Oracle, i want to be a DBA only,
Please any one guide me how to get entered in ORACLE DBA as a fresher,
or let me know if you know about companys whho's hiring freshers for oracle.
    Thanks,
    Karnan Thambidurai

Well, I am not sure that how does this question fits in the database general forum in any ways. If it should be posted( please note the "if") , the most suitable place would the Community discussion forum.
I am not from HR background so please take my advice with grain of salt. When you would be working as a contractor, there would be two ways for this thing. One , you own your company so all the payments , invoices would be on your own company's name. If that's so, no issues. You can always show those invoices. The other way , using which the contract work is done is that you are hired by company X but you end up working for company Y. So company Y doesn't give you anything but your company X is supposed to give you whatever paper work is needed. So see if this is your case.
Whatever the thing may be, the HR of the next company won't stick to the pay slip only provided you can prove that you worked and the money you got for that work was a legal, taxable amount. As long as you can prove that by whatevre kind of document, you are good. That said, you haven't yet started and you are thinking about leaving too! At least do the job first for some time before you care about what the next company's Hr would say since you can always ask them all of these doubts.
Again, please note that Iam not from HR , never was or will be so all what I said is purely based on what I know how things work but any of my words are not at all authoritative.

  • DBA Group Initiatives

I am not sure if I am in the right discussion board or not but here it goes. At our company they want each of the DBAs to lead various initiatives to improve the way we get things done on a day to day basis. They are always looking to us for new ideas to save money or standardize more or use the newest oracle technology. I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to see what other DBA groups have done to improve their quality. It could be very simple things to not so simple. At our work we have done things like
standardize the setup on all unix servers by using the same profiles and variables.
create deployment scripts to create the Oracle Homes and New Database - sets up auditing and locks certain users automatically
using BMC to monitor processes on servers
created scripts to monito the alert logs
I am looking for ideas from others. I was thinking of something with the 10g scheduler or consumer groups. If anyone has done something like this and would like to share let me know. Thanks

You question sound a bit like it relates to DBA stuff, so perhaps the [Database General Forum|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=61] would be a good place.
