Want to become a dedicated Mac person but need convincing GO

Ok now since i was little i was a windows user and still am to this day, But recently i got a new job and we use 27" Macs and im starting to really want to buy one but here a few things, Seeming i use my windows pc as a server i have a couple hundred MKVs (tv shows movies etc about 4tb) and im thinking of replacing the every day use of my computer with a 27" mac and the media center side with Apple TV but
1. was wondering if there is anyway to convert MKVs to Apple TV formats (720 resolution is all i want)
2. will the Apple TV and Mac network to my 4tb windows 7 machine and allow me to stream everything
3. also can i make Apple TV look and feel anything like MediaBrowser (http://mediabrowser.tv/)
4. Now if i was to buy 3 Apple TVs can they all individual watch there own shows?
5. If i buy a Time Machine will these attempt to backup my server?
6. Could i use 4 TimeMachine's as servers for my media? or am i better to buy something like a 8tb network drive?
7. If i buy a mac air for my laptop does it still have 10 hours of battery?
8. Is there a professional version of iWeb or is iWeb the only web editor available made from Apple?
9. On a Mac is there a way to password lock folders? as this is a major issue as i have some adult content that currently my 7 year old son maybe able to stumble upon and i dont want this to happen
I know these are random question but please help me as im planning on spending alot of money and have to make sure the family will be happy

You mean a +*Time Capsule+* -- the Apple hardware combining a wireless router and hard drive. The hard drive can be used as a destination for backups made by +*Time Machine,+* the software that comes with OSX. Time Machine can also back up to a USB or FireWire drive, or a shared drive on another Mac on the same local network.
If your server is a PC, no, Time Machine cannot back it up.
6. Could i use 4 TimeMachine's as servers for my media? or am i better to buy something like a 8tb network drive?
You wouldn't want or need 4 of them. The Time Capsule has Ethernet ports, and you can connect a network drive to one of them. Time Machine can back up to some network drives, but not all of them. The TC also has a USB port, and you can connect a printer or self-powered USB drive to it, or several such things via a powered USB hub.
If you already have a wireless router, you may not need a Time Capsule at all; or you might want an +Airport Extreme+ instead -- it has no internal HD, but the same Ethernet ports and a USB port. You can share one or more drives connected via USB, but you can't use Time Machine to back up that way.
You might want to review the [Time Machine Tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics] and perhaps browse [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

I just bought a new IMAC and I want to install the Office Mac 2011, but it doesn´t have a CD unit. How can I do it?

Howard has the easiest answer. Or at least, cheapest, since you don't need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive.
The "demo" software from Microsoft's site is exactly the same as what's on the DVD. Install that and activate it with the key in your software box.
    From Microsoft's site:
How do I install Office for Mac 2011 if my Mac doesn't have a DVD drive?
There are two options for installing Office for Mac if your Mac doesn't have a DVD drive.
Option 1: Convert your Office for Mac 2011 trial. To convert a trial version, you must have a valid product key. The product key will convert your trial into a fully licensed version of Office for Mac.
    1. Locate the 25-character product key in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Open any Office for Mac application, like Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.
    3. On the first screen of the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant, click Enter your Product Key.
    4. Enter your product key and complete the installation instructions.
Option 2: If you have not previously installed the trial version, you can download Office for Mac from the Office for Mac website. To download, install, and activate the software you must have a valid Office 2011 product key.
    1. Locate your 25-character product key found in your product package or confirmation email.
    2. Go to www.officeformac.com/download
    3. Click Get Started to start the download process.
    4. When prompted, enter your 25-character product key and select your product language.
    5. When prompted, sign in with your Windows Live ID or sign up and create a new Windows Live ID account.
    6. After you enter your Windows Live ID, you will see a link to download the software. (You will also receive a confirmation email with a link to your My Account page if you prefer to wait and download your software at a later time.)
    7. Click Download Now to start the download.
    8. Save the file to your desktop. Do not change the file name.
    9. When the download is complete, double-click the .dmg file icon on your desktop. This opens the Installer application in Mac OS X.
    10. Follow the instructions in the installer screens to complete your installation.

I am so tired of iphoto crashing, losing work I've done.  I want to switch to photoshop elements 10 but need to know if it uses the iphoto library or if I can import that library into elements

Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • G5 User wanting to Move to a Mac PRO but questions

My G5 1.8Gz single processor mac still works but i can't do anything that I want. Specifically, 3D Graphics and animation. All the programs nowadays want a better Graphics card and better processor.
Even the Free DAZ Studio 3, needs a much better computer than i have.
My computer is quite old now i recognize that. And i'm really ready to upgrade but I don't want to spend tooo much money aside from the near 2400 for the mac pro.
    1. Would i be able to keep my Current monitor?? I have an ACER flat screen and is connected to the G5 Tower. I bought it about 1 year ago, so it's not too old and it works perfectly.
    2. Will programs that i use in the G5 work fine in the mac pro( which will have Snow Leopard?Utilities, MS Office,3D Graphics Poser 6 and DAZ Studio 3. i don't really use any CLASSIC ( macos 9) stuff. Just OS X programs.
and will all the files I have work ? I mean, i don't want to have my mac not recognize files
    3. Since i don't really want to spend extra money. Will the base Quad Core mac pro which has 3 GB RAM be sufficient even though my current G5 has 4GB??? Will the Mac pro run better even though it's less GBytes than my current G5?
Ok I'm not a scientist or professional, just a hobbyest. Some may say that it would be better to just get an iMac. i know imacs are great and cheaper but i already have a monitor and i don't want to waste it and not use it.
Or would a Mac mini be better for me???? I"m attracted to the mac mini price.. But would i be able to connect my monitor and have enough options for connecting Firewire drives etc?( There's only one Firewire port)
And is the mac mini good enough for a 3D Graphics/animation hobbyetst?

    1. You can definitely keep your current monitor when you move to a Mac Mini/Mac Pro. A DVI or VGA connection is standard and available from either with included adapters.
    2. Programs should run fine using Rosetta on Snow Leopard. However, you will have to try your individual programs to find out. Many older programs have a few bugs running in Leopard/Snow Leopard, and any current machine will run Snow Leopard only.
    3. Mac Mini versus Mac Pro: you're looking at two different classes of machine. 3D rendering requires powerful hardware unless you are very patient. Only you can decide if a Mini is fast "enough". I encourage you to go to an Apple store. They will (probably) be willing to let you install one of the programs you use on both a Mini and a Mac Pro to see how they run, or they may have something pre-loaded you can try. Then you can decide if the speed difference is worth the $ to you.
Since you're still using a G5 1.8 GHz, it sounds like you get long use out of your machines. The Mac Pro is much better positioned to last a long time. Minis tend to be more "a good solution until the next hardware upgrade" devices or home theater PCs.
Good luck; let us know what you choose and how it goes!

I am not sure what monitor will run on this mac pro bought in Spring of 2007.  Is there any monitor with a built in camera that can be used on this machine?
I have confirmed with apple that it cannot run the LED monitors that apple sells.
suggestions or if you know what monitors I can try to find would be great.  If you need more information, please let me know.  I want to be able to do this right.  Thank you so much.

I know there were many more problems 5 yrs ago with 3rd party monitors and have been some issues in between also.
Apple does have what is needed to use multiple 30 inch displays and the 5770 is pretty mainstream and standard.

    Hello everyone,
if I were to wipe out the hard drive on my Mac Mini (2.3ghz, i7 4g ram), how would i reinstall Mountain Lion, as there is no install disc? Would I need to pay to download it and then mount it to an external drive?
Thank you in advance for the help!

That's correct. Remember that you're downloading it. Some people have download thresholds with their ISP and there's a cost after they go over their limit. ML is approximately a 4GB download. If this isn't a concern, you're good to go.

  • Re: Want to add TC to wireless network but need dual network setup

Currently, have an older AEBS (b/g) connected to my modem. My G5 is connected to it via an ethernet cable. My Intel iMac is connected wirelessly to the AEBS via an older (b/g) AX which amplifies my signal and is also connected to a stereo system). I have a 1 TB TC and would like to set up a dual network so that I can capitalize on the faster N speeds offered by the TC and backup both computers.
Modem -> TC -> AEBS -> G5 (by ethernet cable): the b/g network
TC ->Intel iMac (wireless): the n network.
Will the older (b/g) AX work with iTunes on both computers? Which network should it be a part of?
And how does this dual network configuration work for backing up both computers? Anyone have something similar? Will Airport Utility do this or do I need to do it manually?

Thanks for pointing out that my AEBS needs to be in Bridge mode and for clarifying that AirTunes will work on either network.
Any experience with using TC as a backup on a dual network?
I wonder how many out there have taken advantage of third party apps that given one more options for backing up less frequently than TC does?
    Thanks again for posting.

    Hello:
Thank you for the update for remote access for desktops.
Personally, I do not want to give remote access to anyone but myself as privacy is my friend.  Can this remote desktop software still be for me personally unless I allow access and for my MAC lap top only?  What if I do not update? I do use this lap top in other countries.  compatibility issues with what?

Apple Remote Desktop is off be default. It has to be enabled for some one to be able to remotely connect to the computer. And then, you still have to have a user name and password on the computer to remotely connect with.
If you want to see if remote access has is enabled for Apple Remote Desktop; you can find the setting in, Apple Menu, System Prefrences, Sharing. If it's enabled, Remote Management or Screen Sharing will be checked.
Beucase Apple Remote Desktop Agent is part of the Mac Operating System; even if your not using it, Apple Software Updates will from time to time offer updates for ARD Agent. Software Updates can some times be stacked ontop of each other; so chosing not to install an update, can mean other updates you may want may not be offered. At least until you install the updates those updates require. Also software updates can improve the security of your computer.

One of my favorite things about developing for iOS using Xcode is the Simulator. It runs any of the iOS devices simulated right on your Mac. If you don't have a hardware device to test your application on, the Xcode simulator will surely be your best friend.
So to answer your question less vaguely, yes. You can own the iPhone 5s and develop for the 6. There is no real release information of the iPhone 6 at the time anyways, so I would not let it play too large of a factor in your decision.
