I suggest you start with Oracle Apps Documentation
Applications Releases 11i and 12
http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/applications.html
- Oracle Applications Concepts
- Oracle Applications Installation Guide: Using Rapid Install
- Maintaining Oracle Applications Documentation Set
- Oracle Applications System Administrator's Documentation Set
Once you get familiar with the architecture and the different components of Oracle Apps, consider the following:
- Do an Apps installation yourself (on Linux/Windows)
- Set up users/responsibilities/printers/CM ..etc
- Practice Cloning
- Apply Patches
- Practice AutoConfig to manage system configurations
- Upgrade Database/Application
Go for Oracle Apps training if you can afford it. Moreover, consider to get the following books:
(Oracle Applications DBA Field Guide)
http://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Applications-DBA-Field-Guide/dp/1590596447
(Installing, Upgrading and Maintaining Oracle E-Business Suite Applications Release 11.5.10+)
http://www.amazon.com/Installing-Upgrading-Maintaining-E-Business-Applications/dp/0615141226/
Oracle blogs are good source of information, there are plenty of blogs available now:

Good Luck :)

nice to hear that u have finished ur course so better to install a oracle old version in your system like 9i or 8i versions Just out of curiosity, why are you recommending he install and practice on versions that are so old they are out of support. Where would he even get them?
and then install a patches the OP would have to have a MetaLink account to get patches. Since he doesn't even have a DBA job, it's extremely doubtful he has access to MetaLink
to ur oracle for updating by doing these you can learn how to update the database it is most important role in DBA and make some tuning to your database without using any tools go through sql optimization method by doing these you can learn all commands very well. then after practicing all these take your database backup and unistall oracle in your system after doing that again install oracle and import that previous backup database by doing these you can learn importing and exporting concepts and also learn RMAN concepts when ever ur attending any interview please go through all these concepts.
    better luck for your future.

  • Need Best way to start learning Oracle 11g  DBA

    Hi.This is Tejaswi.
I want to learn Oracle 11g DBA.I've downloaded all software's and Documentation for Orcl 11g R2. Now. i want to start Learning DBA. Can any one suggest me the best way to Start learning DBA?
Please suggest me the good books For Oracle Architecture and SQL.......

    Hello Tejaswi,
The advice you got about reading the Oracle Concepts and 2 Day DBA documentation is very good advice.
I found that knowing some SQL*Plus and SQL Developer was also very helpful as, they both provide a way to interface with the database and try the things you read about. For SQL Plus, I used the book:
Oracle SQL*Plus: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition
    By Jonathan Gennick
    Publisher : O'Reilly
ISBN : 0-596-00746-9 I openly recommend it. It is easy to read, the book is very well thought out, it covers what you really need to know (and more too). The author explains the subjects very well. I would definitely learn some SQL Plus and SQL developer before getting into the 2 Day DBA document (make those 2 days about 7 days each if not more).
To learn SQL, I "sort of" used (I say "sort of" because I only read some parts of it available online and at the local bookstore):
    Oracle SQL by Example
    By Alice Rischert
Publisher: Prentice Hallit probably has more SQL than you'd need as a DBA but, it is an excellent book you may want to consider.
If you are starting from scratch, as I did, you'll find that you need to learn multiple things at the same time. I believe SQL Plus is the best place to start, along with possibly the Concepts document. That will give you a base to build upon.
    HTH,
    John.

    Hi,
My list of Oracle DBA job skills include the following:
Excellent communication skills - The Oracle professional is the central technical guru for the Oracle shop. He or she must be able to explain Oracle concepts clearly to all developers and programmers accessing the Oracle database. In many shops, the Oracle DBA is also a manager and is required to have excellent communication skills for participating in strategic planning and database architectural reviews.
Formal education – Many employers require Oracle professionals to have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or information systems. For advanced positions such as an Oracle DBA, many employers prefer a master’s degree in computer science or a master’s in business administration (MBA).
Real-world experience - This requirement is the catch-22 for newbie’s who possess only an OCP certificate. A common complaint of people who have OCP certificates but no job experience is that they cannot get experience without the OCP, and they cannot get a job without experience. This is especially true in a tight job market.
Knowledge of database theory - In addition to mastering the technical details required for the OCP exams, the successful Oracle professional must have an understanding of database and data warehouse design. This includes intimate knowledge of data normalization theory and knowledge of star schema design, as well as object-oriented modeling with Unified Modeling Language (UML) and knowledge of other database design methodologies such as CORBA and J2EE.
Here is my list of DBA job skills:

Here are notes on becoming a DBA:

Can anyone guide me how to go abt it, so dat i can prepare well for interviews n place myself in a gud company.First n foremost, show dat you have gud communications skills.
    Hope this helps. . .

  • Is this the right path to become a Oracle 10g DBA

I installed Oracle 10g XE with the intention of bringing myself upto speed for Oracle DBA course for Oracle 10g.
Now, let me give my background. I have done lot of programming on PL/SQL on Oracle 8i, but that was more than 4 years ago. I have been more functional for past 4 years. Now I am am trying to get into DBA role.
What all should I focus on XE, in order to prepare myself for Oracle 10g DBA course?
    Thanks in advance.

Is installing XE the right path to becoming a DBA?
I would say that it isn't! XE is perfect if you need a production database and can fit it within the XE limitations. XE is also perfect if you want a Oracle DB with out any of the DBA fuzz. If you want to learn you should install Enterprise Edition. You can get the software on oracle.com, and I believe that you can use it for free as long as you do not do any production on it. XE is not shipped with enterprise manager (oem). However it is shipped with the Enterprise Edition, so another argument for installing that and not XE.
So to summarize it: Get a Enterprise Edition!

    Define "Oracle app DBA"
    Define "Oracle DBA"
