Want to buy an iMac

though I have problems with th right configuration for me.
Because many applications will not run any more on the new (without really technically but economically reasons :-(((( , I am to say goodbye to some things I loved and so is the new engine mainly for work on photo-images. Native (RAW) they have 40MB and will grow in Tiff over 100Mb. For comparison I need to open up to ten at a time in Lightroom or Photoshop or the RAW converter for NEFs(Nikon).
By the reasons explained above manipulating movies which I loved will decrease, so as I see pictures will be the greatest part in working.
Configuring an iMac asks for processor - where to see the plus for me? Asks for kind and amount of RAM - what is the right amount for me? I assume from my experience the largest, but perhaps 16GB is for the beginning enough and can been later ergaenzt.  Configuring asks for external storage - are „large“ decided drives well, or Timecapsule better, or a RAID system?
Can anyone help, please?
~ karl

Hi Karl,
Configuring your iMac with 16GB might be good, but upgrading your processor with the highest i7 available will even make it able to perform better. However if you're willing to spend a little bit more on something which is more powerful than the iMac - then Apple Mac Pro is the best for you.
Hopefully it helps you.

You would have to buy it separately.  Refurbished machines are sold as they were originally configured so you cannot customize the machine when you order it.

    Thank you for your help.

When you sell your iMac, please remember that if you bought Mountain Lion upgrade at the app store, the license is not transferable and you need to erase the drive and reinstall the original system (which was most likely Snow Leopard?). If you don't do that, the buyer can never reinstall Mountain Lion because the license is tied to your Apple ID forever.

    Bonjour VAGRAI
    1) To write math expressions in a text :
         — Microsoft Office 2011 etc. for Mac use its included Equation Editor.
         — OpenOffice.org (OOo) and NeoOffice : download free Dmath 3.3.
         — iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote), download free MathType 6.7, fully functional for 30 days, then becomes « Lite » for life as good as the Microsoft equation editor ; it’s better than using Grapher’s equation editor (Applications > Utilities) because MathType can be called from Pages and allows editing equations by clicking the math expressions your text (details on MathType website) .
         — Graph.app 2.3 in Mountain Lion is built to draw curves and surfaces from equations, so it uses an equation editor less powerful than mathType, but it’s easier typing expressions. You may get 2D 3D geometrical drawings from clever equations. Suggest a glance at   http://y.barois.free.fr/grapher/  to know all about Grapher (83 pages Instructions for Use - Grapher) and some examples
      2) Geometrical schema :
         — GeoGebra is very popular and used by math teachers.
         — Google SketchUp 8 was not built for mathematics but for architecture, but it’s very easy using it to draw 2D 3D surfaces and solid figures.
         — ShapeOnYou.app allows simples geometrical figures  http://pierre.chachatelier.fr/programmation/shapeonyou_en.php
    3) Some useful websites for screen shots of geometrical schema :
         http://www.mathcurve.com/
         http://perso.orange.fr/roger.assouly/
Drawings files PDF, TIFF, JPG … can be inserted in an iWork window (Pages).
I hate LaTex : not necessary to write math books !
    Au revoir VAGRAI,
    YB24
Attachment : lines and curves were made with Google SketchUp 8, screen copied (Command-Shift-4), inserted on a Pages sheet to add letters figures rectangles title.
SketchUp allows drawing precisely an arc of circle 325 mm radius 22,5° angle for instance.

I want to buy an imac but do I have to buy a mac pro or is everything built into the imac?

The MacPro is a tower aimed at professional users. The display is sold separately. The iMac is an all-in-one aimed at consumers (and, well professionals, actually). The computer is built into the same housing that holds the display, optical drive and hard drive. It includes a keyboard and mouse (or trackpad).

  • Want to buy new IMac  but which one?

    Hi guys,
Firstly I want to say that I do not own a Mac yet but am looking to buy one, I have very limited experience with them and am not sure where to start I also only use computers for general stuff like internet browsing watching a movie or 2 and sometimes editing videos, I don't play any games either. I am also not really up with the ins and outs of computers so bear with me.
I'm looking at getting an IMac 2.66 or 2.8GHz but I have a few questions.
Would you suggest that I buy the 2.66 as it looks like the same unit except for the processor speed and save some money for some more memory? Just on that I would probably buy the memory seperate and not get it upgraded when buying the IMac right? Because of the cost I could get it much cheaper elsewhere yes?!
A question about internet & Broadband use, I live in Darwin Australia and am using Bigpond Broadband ADSL 20000/512kbps I am not sure what I need to do to hook up an IMac, do I just use a ethernet cable as per PC do I need any other hardware for either model 2.66 or 2.8GHz?
I guess that's it for now, I hope you can help me, I'm sure you can.
Anything else you can tell me will be helpful as I'm keen to get one and get started.
    Thanks

    Hi BB4L -
I'm from the UK so not sure if I can help re the broadband question but I'll try my best. I use the 20inch 2.66GHz iMac at work and whilst the screen isn't amazing, it's a great, fast machine and would suit your needs perfectly.
You're right, you'd notice hardly any benefit between the 2.66 and 2.8 machines. They have the same HD, RAM and graphics card. You'd be better off spending the extra cash on maxing out your RAM to 4GB - this will give you a more significant speed increase. And don't use Apple to upgrade your RAM, buy it from somewhere cheaper and install it yourself - it's extremely simple. The instructions are [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1760]. A good choice of RAM is [here|http://www.crucial.com> although I'm not sure whether there's an Australian outlet. I just found [this|http://www.buymac.com.au/store/computer-addons/mac-memory-upgrades/imac/i mac-intel-core2duo-penryn] site but obviously have never used them so couldn't say if they're good or not.
In terms of broadband, if you already have a modem/router box which came with your broadband then you can hook it up with an ethernet cable or connect wirelessly if the box is a wireless modem/router.
    Hope this helps.

  • I want to buy a iMac in Ireland with a PT keyboard

    Hi All,
I am looking to purchase a iMac from the Ireland Apple store.
However, because I write in multiple languages besides english, my best fit is a Portuguese keyboard. After going thru the IE website, which only has British, US, French and German I looked at the PT website and cant buy there because it will be shipped within Portugal and not abroad.
    Any ideas???
    Thank you!!!

If you cannot get an iMac with a Portuguese keyboard from the Apple Online Store, you should call Apple. Normally they allow you to get your Mac with different keyboard configurations than the ones listed in the Apple Online Store.
For Ireland, the phone number is 1800 92 38 98. Another option would be to look for a new iMac with Portuguese keyboard at another website, like Amazon.

  • Where do I buy old iMacs like the iMac G3 for example?

I wanted to buy an iMac G3 because I want to use that old machine for gaming and web-surfing and use my Mac mini G4 exclusively for animation.
Please I beg of you do not suggest eBay!
I considered Frys Electronics but I doubt they sell used computers and I don't know of any in the State of Texas.

    Hey Cheerle,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Here's a site that compares all the iMacs that were made. I would only consider a slot loader for what you are doing for it. I would try to at least get a 400 MHz up to a 700 which would be ideal.
A lot of school districts are cycling out their iMac G3s. Also a lot of graphics design studios and companies that used them for production. If you're close to a large town you can also check in thrift stores and also garage and yard sales.
If there's a Craig's list in your area also another great source. I search iMacs in the computer ssection and pick the oldest posts and offer them what I think it's worth.
I pick up iMacs here in Chicago for $25-$35 for 400 slots up to $60 for a 700 slot.

  • I want to buy a 21.5" new imac shortly. Will I be able to have a free update of the operating system to OS 10.9 when it arrives later this month

I want to buy a 21.5" new imac shortly. Will I be able to have a free update of the operating system to OS 10.9 when it arrives later this month?

Unfortunately there is no one here that can give you an answer; we are just users like yourself.
But based on past experience it has been known for free upgrades to be offered ... but not before the new OS is formally announced.   There have been several references of late to the imminent launch of Mavericks.  I think you can do no more than wait for the announcement.

  • Hey, I want to buy a macbook pro or imac mini, I want to know which is better and why, is their going to be new macbooks ect released in 2-3 months thats better that i should rather wait for? Or buy one now ?

Please help me i dont know which one to buy, and ive never owned one before but i have used my friends quite alot. Why is macbook's worth buying if you can get many products for the same price with better specs ?What makes it unique that it dominates basically the whole world.

    Hey,
Thank's 4 the advice , but one of my main problems is I live in South Africa and apple products is x2 as much as what the usa doller is for it. Eg Macbook pro starting price $1199 american dollars and directley converted to South African currency is R9160.30.... but the problem is if i want to buy it in my country it has been marked up alot and a Macbook pro starting price for me will be R13000 for 13 inch and if you directley convert our price into american dollers its $1704.30 american dollars, so thats +600 dollers more.
So its much more expensive to buy products in my country and thats just the starting price.
I want mobality but i was also thinking (imac mini) is kinda portable and can plug into any1  T.V u know.
So like i really do t know what to get and that, because its alot more money to spend than the US dollar.
So i really want you to put your self in my position you know...
And what is classified as a good monitor???
And i want to know why my friends say that the imac mini is pathetic , but i think it losts longer than most windows laptops, what do you think ??
And can i who lives in south africa buy products directley from apple them selves ??
Thank's man , hope you can help me out here!
Hope other people can c this 2

    Glenn,
I tried upgrading to leopard, even bought the software and brought it home but it wouldn't let me. So i went back to apple, gave them the specifications of the machine and been told my machine is simply too old for leopard. This is incredible to me because it really isn't THAT old (i think just a little over 6 years maybe) and yet i'm left out on the curb when it comes to using newer apple products. I understand technology moves on but the mindset that i am supposed to dump a perfectly working machine after a couple of years or face not being able to use any other apple product is counter to what thought apple was about.

I want to buy in spain custom version of the iMac) I want to pick it up from the apple store but the internet says that the store it might not be here I want to ask how to make a pre-order or delivery to the apple store)

As far as I can see, Apple now have stores in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.   You should be able to order from any of these stores fort delivery to a Spanish address.   Check out via Google by simply entering Apple Sore Madrid (or wherever) and up should come the details.

  • I want to buy a new mac.  Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB

I want to buy a new mac.  Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB?  And would the stock 512mb video card be fine.

davidfromdartmouth wrote:Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB?
Specifically, after you buy a Mac test for RAM needs by calculating page outs as described below. The good news is that RAM is cheap enough that every Aperture user who can should upgrade to at least 8 GB RAM.
And would the stock 512mb video card be fine.
All 2011 Macs will "run" Aperture, but lesser CPUs and/or lesser GPUs will provide lesser performance. What "fine" is depends on your workflow and how demanding you are. There are some folks here happy with the power of the box you suggest.
    GENERIC UPGRADE ADVICE
Apologies in advance to those for whom this info is redundant.
Some general guidelines for operation of heavy graphics applications (specifically Aperture):
    • Only the strongest Macs will provide the strongest operation. Owners of weaker boxes (CPU, GPU, i/o, RAM) or older boxes will experience lesser performance.
    • There is a huge difference in hardware needs among workflows. A heavy pro workflow will only work best on a top well-equipped modern box.
    • As RAM prices continually fall RAM needs will continually grow. This has been true since the beginning of computing.
OS X has enabled Photoshop, for instance, to take advantage of at least 32 GB RAM for many years even though 32-bit operation limited direct RAM access to ~3 GB RAM.
    • All computers/OSs/workflows are different. Each individual user needs to carefully evaluate (meaning see what the early adopters report) workflow and hardware operation BEFORE upgrading any application or OS.
    • Hardware upgrades should be planned for always-increasing future OS/application demands, not just for today. After all, a computer purchased today is used for the next 3 years, not last year.
    • SSDs rock.  All users, all apps will benefit from using a solid state drive as the boot/apps drive. Strongly recommended. RAM-challenged setups will additionally benefit from 10x faster page outs.
    • All users should regularly evaluate their workflows by checking the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a work session; then rechecking after working. If the page outs number increased significantly during operation the workflow is RAM-starved and steps should be taken, such as increasing RAM or restarting and running only one app at a time - - or switching from 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation. [Note: this is a manual calculation of any change in page outs. Ignore the cute pie charts, page ins, etc.]

I have an iMac with a Magic Mouse, if I want to upgrade my iMac to the OS X Lion, will I have to buy a Magic Trackpad?

Expanding on what Barry said, Lion includes features specifically for trackpads, but it's by no means necessary to have one. A Magic Mouse will work just fine (as will any other mouse or trackball).
