Want to clone system

I'm new to Macs and I got a MBP recently.
In Windows, I would always make a ghost image of my C drive after I had set everything up correctly and save it to a different drive in case I needed to reinstall everything on the C drive because of serious errors or to get a clean install and get rid of crap that had accumulated. It was much easier to re-image from the ghost than to reformat, install Windows and install all of the software again and get it all activated.
I now have loaded all of the software that I need to use (FCPS2, CS3 Master Collection and Office 2004) and it is all up and running nicely. I have also set up Mail (why isn't it called iMail?) but I have no personal data yet that needs to be backed up.
What I would like to do now is create a ghost (clone?) of the setup in case anything goes wrong I can just ghost the saved image back to the hard drive and have the computer the way it is now.
I have no idea how to do this on a Mac.
I have an external firewire drive available to store the clone image.
Would someone please advise me on how to do this on a Mac or where to look for instructions? Will I need additional software or does OSX have utilities to do this?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

Super Duper is both, and as Michael says, free. It's good.
PS - Make sure to partition the external drive using the GUID partition scheme in order for it to be bootable. To do that, connect the drive, open disk utility - applications/utilties and select the hard drive on the left, the partition tab and then the options button at the bottom.
Best of luck.

  • Want to clone system drive - best approach?

The original 160 SATA drive in my fall '04-vintage G5 dual 2 gig machine is makin' funny music. I figure the best way to deal with it is to clone it to a new drive and replace it.
Are there utilities that help me do this? Can I just copy one drive to another, remove the old drive, and start up from the new one like nothing's changed? Or is is trickier than that?

Hi Mike - You can either install OS X on a volume/partition of another internal or an external firewire drive - or clone your current drive if it Disk Verifies ok in Disk Utility - with CCC
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    or SuperDuper
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
and then select it as the Startup disc in System Preferences > Startup Disc - or boot holding down the Option(alt) key. (Copying doesn't produce a 'bootable' drive.) Any iSight should be disconnected during cloning to a firewire drive - and you should boot and run on the cloned drive a few times to make sure it's ok.
Please post again if you need further info.

  • G5, 2.7 using OSX10.4.11: I want to clone the hard drive. Instead of housing the new hard drive in an external case could I put it into an idle G5 that currently has no hard drive (an elaborate external case, so to speak)? If so, how then to connect the 2

G5, 2.7 using OSX10.4.11: I want to clone the hard drive. Instead of housing the new hard drive (during the cloning process) in an external case, could I simply install the new hard drive into an idle G5 that has no hard drive in it thus using the idle G5 as an elaborate external case? What cables would I use to connect the 2 computers? Ethernet?  USB?  Could I use the firewire cable that is normally used by my Apple camera (the camera that is an aluminum tube, I forget the name of that thing). The idle G5 is a 1.6 model, would that matter?  Thanks

I personally can think of two options.
    1. Mount the drive in which the copy of the first hard drive will go to inside of the 2.7gHZ G5's case. There is room for two hard drives in there. See Link for Help
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PMG5_HD_DIY.pdf
Once it is installed, simply boot off of your Mac OS Install media (CD, DVD, USB) it can be any version that supports the PowerPC platform. You need to boot holding the "C" key. Then choose Disk Utility and hit the restore tab. Drag the old partition to the "Source" field and the new hard drive to the "destination" field.
    2. Put the second hard drive into the second (idle) G5. You will need a copy of the Mac OS install DVD as again you cannot clone a drive when it is in use (running the operating system). Hold down the "T" key at boot up and then a firewire logo will bounce on the monitor. then plug the cable into the 2.7 g5 and start it up
I hope that this is helpful.
    Long Live the PowerPC G5

AFAIK, there's no app that'll clone the Mac and PC volumes so you can restore them. System Image Utility.app or Deploy Studio for Mac and Ghost for PC are needed. See these for starters:

  • Clone system-unanswered questions

    Hello.
I neer to clone my system drive (mountain lion) and then upgrade the cloned copy of my system drive to mavericks so I can test it out and make sure I am happy with its performance on my mid 2010 Mac Pro.
From what I gathered I can just pop in a same size internal harddrive into one of my Mac Pro harddrive bays and run carbon copy cloner and then just clone the drive.
Where its gets a little hazy for me is, what happens after you have cloned the system drive.
When booting up with a system drive and cloned system drive in the same machine, from which drive will the Mac Pro actually boot up from when restarting? Will I be asked Where to boot up from? Also could I just remove the original system harddrive from its bay and keep the cloned system drive inside and will the Mac pro then boot as per usual? It's also important to mention I have a password on my Mac Pro that I must type in for any new installs and for logging in, also not sure if this plays any role in complicating things?
is there anything I should be made aware of regarding cloning a system drive that is commonly left unsaid?
Thank you to the soul who took the time to help another one, it certainly makes a difference and it is appreciated.

So to avoid the blinking question mark of death, should i after the cloning process just go and set the clone as the startup drive, shut down, remove the original system drive and reboot and then it will boot up ok from the newly appointed system clone?
Also can I give the cloned drive a different name? I mean how will I know which is which after the cloning if it gets cloned using the same harddrive name? For example can I clone my system drive but name it Mavericks?
There is no need to remove the original system drive. Just go into System Prefs and select the disk you want to use as your startup disk.
The drive onto which you want to clone your system can be named whatever you want ("Mavericks", "Guinea Pig"). Name it, then clone onto it. Or rename it after cloning.

  • HELP! I did an archive and install and I want my old system back

    Hello,
I had a big problem that actually ended up being a small problem. Unfortunately to try to fix it I did an archive and install. Now I have come to the realization that my Postfix mail setup, my MySQL setup, my PHP setup, my web pages, my Blog are all gone. Now if I go into the "previous system" folder everything seems to be there. Is there a way to just restore the old system to get all that back without having to reconfigure and redo everything?
I tried to copy the old "Library" back out to the / folder, the problem is that this folder is constantly in use and cannot be replaced.
    Any advice?
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz

    Joshua:
You said you did an Archive and Install. You did not say whether this was an upgrade or you were re-installing Tiger.
I suggest you read the article linked above, if you have not already done so, and it will give you an idea of what happened. If you chose to preserve User Settings, it should all be there in your new Library. All you need to do it move over your data and you'll be fine. Otherwise you can just move over your entire Users Folder and it will have everything you need.
You said that you want your old system back. I am not sure if you are saying that you want to go to a previous OS, like Panther, or whether you want your computer back the way it was.
a couple of other points, if I may:
    1. Re-installation, by whatever method, should always be a avenue of last resort. It is the ultimate invasive therapy and likely result in the situation you are in or worse. Every other avenue should be exhausted before resorting to this rememdy.
    2. A good backup strategy is a life saver. During any major procedure, and sometimes without any procedure just of out the blues, your computer can fail and you can lose all your data, your third party apps etc. It is good practice to preferably clone your entire computer to an external Firewire Drive that can also be used as an emergency boot disk.
OK, I gave you much more information that you requested. However, I hope something I said was helpful in terms of recovering your settings and data. Please post back and let me know.
    Good luck.

  • Use Disk Utility "Restore" to clone system Drive

I have always recommended that everyone use the Restore function under Disk Utility to clone their drive before each update, just incase one needs to quickly fall back to a working release.
Well I decided to test my cloned drive, and to make a long story short, be sure that you boot from a different drive than the one you want to clone. A clone made from the current/active startup drive does NOT boot (well mine would not boot).
So, boot from a backup drive/partition, one that is Panther works best as you do not have to worry about spotlight, or dashboard, or any of the other "cool" Tiger auto running programs getting in the way, then go into Disk Utility, and Restore, and clone your main startup drive. It creates a drive that will actually boot.
Maybe this was obvious to everyone, but I had been making my backup clone drive for the past year right from my main active startup drive. I never received an error that indicated there would be any problem with the cloned drive. Thank goodness that I NEVER had to use the backup.
Now I sleep peacefully at night, knowing I have a bootable replacement startup drive ready to go at a moments notice.

CCC has worked fine with 10.3.x but I have been having some issues getting the backup of 10.4 to be recognized.
I don't know if it is the disk (it's on a partition of a sloooow lacie) or the nature of the clone. In either case, it takes a couple of tries before the drive is found as a boot drive and it is a pain....
After a hugely painful and very, very expensive experience with failed backups (we lost the entire office's electronic records going back for 3 years), I have gotten in the habit of booting off the backups once every few weeks to verify they work.
In the immortal words of journalist and fiction writer Damon Runyon, "Trust, but verify."
    Cheers,

want to upgrade system RAM of preserio V 6500 presently it is 1 GB only (512 x 2)

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01295079.pdf
Please see chapter 1, page 2 for how much, and what type of memory you can install.
I recommend you install PC2-6400 memory, since the processors can run it at 800 Mhz instead of 667 MHz, which is all that PC2-5300 can run at.

I want to clone an internal windows 7 disk to a larger disk in my G5 Pro (2009) 2.93. Would I have to do it from the Windows side or can I do it from the mac side, and what software works for cloning if anyone knows.
    thorpug

We don't mix names G5 (IBM, PowerMac) and Mac Pro (Intel)
Depends what you actually are doing.
Do both Mac and Windows reside on same or separate drives?
For running a Mac utility, then WinClone 4 $39
Review was on http://www.macwindows.com two weeks ago
For Windows on its own drive and disk to disk, then Paragon HDM 12 is best.
You should visit Paragon, for imaging and cloning Windows as well as HFS+ drivers.
