If you don't need high speed for one display, you could use a USB to DVI adapter

  • MacBook Pro connected Cinema Display lid closed - is this alright?

I have my Macbook Pro connected to a 23" Cinema Display and I was just reading something about heat and wanted to make sure its fine to have my Macbook Pro connected to the Cinema Display with the lid closed. Actually, I'm guessing there's no problem as only rarely do the fans kick in and this has to be when the CPU is being held wide open for an extended length of time.
However, I thought I'd just bounce it off the forum to make sure this is fine. I think I asked Apple ages ago when I got the display and they told me it was fine. I've run it this way I suppose for 2.5 years so and everything runs fine. But, I know this thing can get hot when I sit it on my lap which is rare now since I have a iPhone.

It's fine to do that, but personally, I would leave the lid cracked open about an inch to aid in cooling. Air is drawn in through the keyboard.

  • Connecting Cinema Display with mini display port to macbook pro with thunderbolt port

I am trying to connect a 27" cinema display (2010) that has a mini display port cable out of the back, into my macbook pro (2013) with thunderbolt ports.  The mini display port cord fits into the thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro, however the macbook pro does not detect the cinema display and the cinema display does not have any picture on the screen.  The USB plugs in fine and sound comes out, and I have the adapter for the magsafe to magsafe 2 and that works fine, it just the actual display.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hello mmholt,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there’s no video on an Apple Cinema Display that’s connected to your MacBook Pro, and you’re wondering if the configuration is supported. It is supported, take a look at the article linked below for more information.
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
    1. Can I connect a Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt port on my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac?
Yes. A Mini DisplayPort display or a display connecting with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, or HDMI adapter will work just like it was connecting to a Mini DisplayPort connector when plugging in directly to the Thunderbolt connector on your Apple computer. Click here for more information on Mini DisplayPort connections and adapters.
Also, this article provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that will resolve most issues related to video external displays.

  • How to connect Cinema Display A1081 to Mac Mini 2009

This may seem an obvious question but the problem is that I am currently abroad, having bought a Mac Mini to replace my very old PowerMac G4, so I cant check if the cable that currently connects the old machine to my Cinema Display will also fit into the new Mac Mini.
Any help or suggestions are gratefully received.

Just other users here, no replies from Apple itself.
Besides the included adapter working, there's a MDP to DVI adapter you can buy...

  • I want to connect my old 23" cinema display to new iMac 5K retina

I have just ordered a brand new iMac with 5K retina display & would like to link up my old 23" Cinema display to it so I can continue to have my dual screen workstation as I have done since 2005.
I could do with a little advice before it arrives as to what adaptor I will need in order to connect the two.
I am currently connected to an old 17" MacBook Pro so am unsure of how it will work with the new iMac?
The old cinema display has a 3-cable configuration (USB / Firewire / DVI cable) connecting from the power adaptor over to my MacBook Pro.

    Hi John
    Thanks for replying,
My current setup is this, my non apple router is accessed wirelessly by all my computers, ie imac, mac mini and macbook pro, ipad & iphones for internet.
My printer is in another room so therefore I cannot connect the AEBS (airport extreme base station) with an ethernet cable (I have intially in order to update the firmware and other updates) so in following the attached guidelines are you saying that I have to have the AEBS connected with the ethernet cable to the router?
I was hoping to wirelessly connect.
The wish is that all my devices can print wirelessly
What has happened though is that I can access the AEBS wirelessly, but it has disabled me from my router so I cannot connect to the internet neither to that network
    Any other advice
    Thanks
    Regards

  • I want my MacBook open and its screen dark when connected to Cinema Display

I have a c. 2009 MacBook Pro running OSX10.8.3.  When gaming I want to use my Cinema Display (only) with the MacBook open and its screen dark, in order to facilitate cooling and conserve video card resources.  Is there any easy, safe, reliable, non-technical way to accomplish this?? I have searched the Web and found everything from using a magnet to reprogramming to using Hot Corners.  Using Hot Corners seemed to have good potential but I can't seem to make that work.  I don't want to reprogram my computer whenever I disconnect it from the display.  I am afraid a magnet is not good for the computer.  And I really find it hard to believe that something this basic should be impossible!

    Hi Squiji,
Turn the brightness control all the way down
does that count as an easy, safe, reliable, non-technical way?
    Another nice trick:
    ctrl+shift+eject
instantly darkens your screen to black.
You can return to normal brightness by pressing any key or the trackpad.
very handy when somebody like your boss unexpectedly comes in, and you don't want him to see your 'confidential information' :-)
Don't know how this behaves with a second screen attached though, I assume that goes black too but you can try it.

  • How to connect my Cinema Display as a second monitor

I just purchased a new 27-inch iMac, and I explained to the Apple folks that I had a 17-inch cinema display (silver clad model) that I wanted to connect, for a dual monitor set up. They told me just to get the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, but I was surprised to realize that's not going to work.
Can anyone tell me how to do this, and what connector is actually needed? I have the big old white power brick that I bought to daisy chain my old 17 and 23 inch displays with my old configuration (Mac Pro).
Or can you not have a second monitor with an iMac?
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to connect a cinema display and a VGA monitor to mac mini

I bought a Macmini and want to connect to a cnema display and to a monitor that uses VGA connection. I also bought a MiniDisplayPort to VGA adapter but the MacMini only has ONE Minidisplay port.  I thought this would be more straitforward....

I'm unsure of the issue, the Mini has both mDP and HDMI outputs, right? If so, the mDP for the Cinema Display an a HDMI to VGA adapter for the 2nd monitor.

  • Can I connect a 24" Cinema Display with mini DisplayPort in to HDMI out?

I have a 24" LED Cinema Display that I want to use with a new 15" Retina MacBook Pro I will soon be purchasing. Using cable adaptors, would it be possible use the new Macbook Pro's HDMI port to connect to this Cinema Display? I understand that this does not work with the newer Thunderbolt displays because Thunderbolt only adapts in one direction, but since this is an older Mini Displayport monitor would it work? My goal is to keep both Thunderbolt ports available for storage I/O untill Apple releases an update to the Thunderbolt display later this or next year. Thanks for your advice!

Yes, in this scenario, I'd connect the display to one of the Thunderbolt ports and use a USB hub for additional I/O. Here's my current I/O needs:
    1) esata (with port multiplication)
    2) gigabit ethernet
    3) firewire 800
    4) USB keyboard
    5) 3-port USB hub (iOS, bluetooth charger, misc USB2 or 3)
    6) monitor
My current plan is to use
    1) thunderbolt 1 - display
    2) thunderbolt 2 - firewire 800
    3) USB3 1 - esata
    4) USB3 2 - USB3 hub - gigbit ethernet and all other USB devices
Does this seem like a resaonable set-up in terms of maxing I/O bandwidth? My main concern is if the USB2 devices on the USB3 hub will throttledown my gigabit ethernet speeds.
    Thanks for your advice!

  • How to connect the 27" cinema display to Mac Pro?

Hallo, I want to connect my mac pro, early 2008, with force gtx 285 to a apple cinema display 27", which adapter do I need??? Sorry for my english, I'm from austria. Thanks for your help :-)

To drive the 27" to its full reolution you need a male dual link DVI to female mini-displayport adaptor.  Apple makes one but it is not cheap ($99).  Stick "dual link dvi to mini-displayport adaptor" into a google search and maybe you can find something cheaper.

  • How to connect a mac pro A1186 to 27" cinema display

Hello! Trying to connect a newer display to older mac pro.
Have a mac pro A1186, want to connect it to a 27" Cinema display. Any way to do this? I've read that there needs to be a female-mini-to-male-dvi converter, and that those don't exist?
    Any suggestions or help?
    Thank you!

    Hello,
A new graphics card wouldn't be a bad idea; but if you don't want to go this route, I know from experience that the Altona DVI to Mini DisplayPort Converter works all right. It is discontinued now, but I'm sure a few of them can still be had through eBay or another similar source. I bought and used one to connect a 2006 Mac Mini to a 27" Cinema Display a while back. Hope this helps.
