Want to connect my old Laserwriter Plus to my new iMac

My old LW+ has been connected to my equally old Quadra 700 and Performa 6116 via the old appletalk protocol. Since i rarely play with those anymore, I wanted to hook up the printer (which still prints beautifully) to the new iMac. Trouble is, I have no idea if technology exists to go from the appletalk technology (or even the old serial port) to, say, usb...or maybe even ethernet, and if 10.4.10 will even recognize the old beast. Any suggestions?

If you're willing to turn on one of the old computers as print server, and it's hooked up to ethernet, install Appletalk Bridge on the old server, and your printer should show up in Printer Setup on OS X.
Asante and Farallon made ethernet-localtalk bridge devices that are now available on eBay. My Farallon one doesn't work with my 100baseT network, so I can't really recommend that approach.

  • I want to connect my old 23" cinema display to new iMac 5K retina

I have just ordered a brand new iMac with 5K retina display & would like to link up my old 23" Cinema display to it so I can continue to have my dual screen workstation as I have done since 2005.
I could do with a little advice before it arrives as to what adaptor I will need in order to connect the two.
I am currently connected to an old 17" MacBook Pro so am unsure of how it will work with the new iMac?
The old cinema display has a 3-cable configuration (USB / Firewire / DVI cable) connecting from the power adaptor over to my MacBook Pro.

    Hi John
    Thanks for replying,
My current setup is this, my non apple router is accessed wirelessly by all my computers, ie imac, mac mini and macbook pro, ipad & iphones for internet.
My printer is in another room so therefore I cannot connect the AEBS (airport extreme base station) with an ethernet cable (I have intially in order to update the firmware and other updates) so in following the attached guidelines are you saying that I have to have the AEBS connected with the ethernet cable to the router?
I was hoping to wirelessly connect.
The wish is that all my devices can print wirelessly
What has happened though is that I can access the AEBS wirelessly, but it has disabled me from my router so I cannot connect to the internet neither to that network
    Any other advice
    Thanks
    Regards

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.home.search&local e=en_US&q=time%20machine
And, you might be attracting more knowledgeable answers if you were to post this question in the Time Machine Forum (part of the Snow Leopard forums).

    See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-no-longer-works-mac-os-10-4-or-powerpc
Since you have a Intel Mac, if you can upgrade to OSX 10.5.x then you may be able to use more current releases.
jscher2000, You should link to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html for 3.6.28 since the ftp is not mirrored.

  • I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

It is not necessary to delete your old wireless networks first, but doing so may eliminate confusion. If you wish to do that, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button, then select your old wireless networks and delete them with the "–" (minus) button. Make sure the "Remember networks this computer has joined" remains checked.
    OK then Apply.
This prevents your Mac from searching for your previous network which will no longer exist.
A new Express creates an open wireless network that you must select before you can configure it. It appears in your Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Edit: If you are really using OS X 10.5.1 as shown in your profile, the above screenshot is not applicable. Instead, select the network called "Apple network nnnnnn" and then launch AirPort Utility.

  • HT4914 I want to transfer my entire iTunes "folder" from a newer iMac 3.06 GHz Core 2 machine running iTunes 10.7 to an older iMac running OSx 10.5.8. How best to do this and keep all my data, tags and covers in tact?

Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
    Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it.

I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

  • I want to format my external drive so that my new imac and my pc can read and write ,what should i do?

i want to format my external drive so that my new imac and my pc can read

Start by partitioning the drive as required for the Mac:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Now click on the Erase tab in the main menu, then select ExFAT from the Format Type dropdown menu. Click on the Erase button. This format is read/write on both the Mac and the PC. If you have a problem with it on the PC, then format the drive the same way using the Windows formatter.

  • How do i move all my music from my old Macbook Pro laptop to new iMac desk top?

I have a 2009 macbook pro and want to move all my music over to my new iMac desk top...how do i do this?
    thx

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168

  • I have an old 30" apple cinema display (2005) I want to use as a 2nd monitor to a new iMac (2012).  I don't just want mirror image of iMac; what's the best way to do this?

I have not bought the iMac yet but will do so very soon and just want to make sure I have what I need to get everything setup including adding the old faithful 2005 30" cinema display.  Currently I am driving the old 30" cinema display with a macbook pro also purchased 2005 and happy to say I got a lot of good miles out of this rig.  What's the best way to connect the old 30" monitor as a second display for the new generation iMacs?
    Other Questions
I can find online new in unopened box a 2012 iMac 27" i7 with 1T Fusion Drive for $1899 no sales tax.  This seems like a pretty good deal since I notice the same is available from Apple refurbished for $100 more plus sales tax.  I know that they say the Fusion drive is a lot faster on 2013 models but some of the speed tests I reviewed online showed the 2012 i7 and 2013 i7 very close on speed for both storage and processing.  Any thoughts?
I don't like changing batteries so I would buy a separate Apple keyboard with numeric pad since it only comes with wireless keyboard.  I'm a trackpad enthusiast having been using my macbook pro trackpad with current set up; and I am prepared to buy the Apple trackpad and replace batteries every 2 months but I would greatly prefer USB connection and rechargeable trackpact.  I know Logitech makes one so if anyone is using and knows how it compares to Apple's I'm all ears.

You can use USB for the Apple trackpad.

  • I am changing my hard drive and want to copy my old hard drive to the new one.

I went to the apple store with a bad hard drive in my macbook pro. The apple store said change the hard drive, they did, but I wanted to save the old hard drive to get everything off of it. So, I borrowed a sata enclosure and I was able to get everything from the orignial drive (which wasn't really broken) onto my external harddrive. Then I started up the Computer, but didn't use the Migration Assistant (Dumb, I know). Now I need to get everything that was on the original drive and put it where it is suppose to go. Is there a simple solution?

If this external drive is a boot drive (has the OSX on it), you can swap it into your MBP or use Disk Utility>Restore to clone the data to the internal MBP HDD.
    Ciao.

How to connect old LED Cinema Display (Mini DisplayPort)

    Ideas?

Just plug it into the Thunderbolt port. That port directly supports mini-DisplayPort screens.
