Want to connect wrt54g to cable modem

I have a wrt54g v5, with firmware 1.02.5.  I want to use my comcast cable modem.  I found the walkthru on doing the mac clone.  I did that, then the power cycling, then upgraded to the firmware version i listed.  Still can't get it to work.  When i go into the status of the router, my IP and subnet are still all zeros.  Help!

After upgrading you need to reset the router and reconfigure the router.
1. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
2. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for
another 30 Seconds.
3. Plug back the power back in, and keep holding down the reset button
for 30 Seconds.
4. Release the reset button.
Reconfiguration for cable modem.
Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes)
click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be
on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings
button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
- Click on enable
Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router ....
If getting Valid Ip .... try going online
If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then again check the WAN Ip address .....

i have a Linksys Wrt54gs connected to a Cable modem.
it worked for about 8 months.
My kid pressed a button by accident and now it won't work.
    the router just keeps resetting.
    i unplugged everything.
conencted 1 computer, and everything is fine.
    Received DHCP address.
Once i plug in a second computer it starts rebooting.
Both computers are set to DHCP.
NO internet connection is connected at this time for troubleshooting purposes.
Nothing is connected to the ethernet port on the Linksys router (port for internet access), only 1 and 2 are connected.
i reset the router and still nothing.
i can connect 1 computer via wireless and 1 computer via direct connection and all is good. Once 2 devices are connected via direct connections it starts resetting.
i can even connect the modem to the router (for internet access), and connect to the linksys router via wireless from my computer and get internet access.
But once i direct connect 2 connections, the router starts resetting.
i have reset and reboot it with every combination i can think of.

Its good that its working now.
If it happens again, try this :
Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. The Power light will start flashing. Turn the Router and the Modem OFF. Turn the modem ON first, wait for 10 seconds, turn the router ON, wait for 10 seconds, you should be ONLINE !!!
Do this when the computer os connected to the router with a cable.
than on the computer open Internet Explorer and in the Address Bar type : 192.168.1.1 and hit enter.
It'll ask for the password. The default password is admin.
Once in the setup page. Click on the Wireless tab.
In there Change the Network Mode to mixed. And change the SSID to your name.
Change the Channel to 11. And Enable the SSID Broadcast.
Save the settings here. After that Click on Wireless Security and configure it accordingly and Save the settrings.
Than click on Advanced Wireless Settings. In there Disable the SES function.

For the new airport extreme what type of cable do I need to connect to my cable modem. Is Cat5 OK or will that bottle neck things?

Assuming that your cable modem has Gigabit Ethernet ports (possible, but it probably does not) Cat 5e or Cct 6 would do the job that you need.
If the cable modem is using a 10/100 Mbps port, then Cat5 will be OK.

  • Connecting Help using Cable Modem

I am trying to connect to the internet using a cable modem. It works fine on my PC but when I try to plug it in to my Macbook, I can't connect. First off I figured I could just plug it in and hit connect, or it would connect automatically. Because the whole reason I got a mac was because of the "easy-ness" surrounding them. So can anyone guide me to somehow connect.

The problem likely is not your Mac but your cable modem.
Most cable modems, for some unknown reason, lock themselves to the first device they see. This means that if your PC is the first device to use it, then only the PC can use it - it won't talk to the Mac at all.
The first solution is simple - power cycle the modem. This resets the lock so the Mac can use it (as long a the Mac is the first device), but then you have the same situation with the PC.
The better solution is to get a NAT router that can take the connection from the cable modem and share it between both Mac and PC simultaneously. As far as the cable modem is concerned, it only sees the router and the lock does not matter. Numerous vendors make numerous products that will fill this requirement.

  • No Connection to the cable modem/Internet with APX

    Hi!
My Apple Airport Express BaseStation worked properly for some weeks - but from one day to the other, the ethernet connection to the cable modem doesn't work anymore. The cable modem is working properly, there is NO problem. I can connec to the internet vial LAN card of the computer without problems. But my APX has no connection to the cable modem. The flashlight is blinking orange.
I tried everything - hard reset, soft reset,..... but no change, there is no connectin to the cable modem.
Does anybody know what to do? Can the APX be defect?

I found the solution: somehow an old and inactive dhcp-server and dns-server setting messed around with the settings. Once I deleted these settings everything started working normally again

  • WRV54G connection to WCG200 Cable Modem ?

Has anyone tried setting up their WCG200 with a WRV54G?
I'm having trouble and I was hoping someone out there has done it successfully.
    Here's what I've done/learned:
    1. I've only had success connecting the vpn router with a straight-thru cable from the ethernet ports. (like hooking up 2 routers)
    2. I've needed to keep the DHCP service on the cable modem in order for it to hit the gateway.
    3. The VPN is set to router (not gateway).
What I've tried that DIDN'T work:
    a) Used the WAN port on the VPN router to connect to the Cable Modem
    b) Used static addresses instead of DHCP and configuring the VPN router to use the default gateway IP of the cable modem address.
    c) Used separated networks like 192.168.0.x for cable modem and 192.168.1.x for VPN and change the subnet mask to 254.
    d) Firewalls turned off; DMZ set to IP for VPN router
So, my network is like this:
    10.0.0.1 - Cable Modem
    10.0.0.2 - VPN Router
    10.0.0.3~6 - PCs
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
All clients hooked through the VPN router which connects to cable modem uplink port.
    DHCP on Cable Modem
    VPN pass-through enabled
I'm able to get out from my internal network with this setup, but unable to QuickLink into it yet. It's functioning just like an ethernet multi-router system all on the same network, basically.
I've tried to use the Linksys default setup disk to setup the VPN in various conditions, but no go, and there's precious little help from the manuals for this case. Any ideas would be appreciated.

HI , what you have done here is that by putting the WRV on the DMZ , you have opened all ports for the WRV.However , on the WCG itself all ports may possibly be blocked. Even though the VPN passthrough is enabled.
Try and forward the VPN ports on the WCG as well (1723,500,50,43-47,445)

  • Help Please: How to connect to a cable modem?

Here's the deal: I'm getting a new iBook tomorrow I'd like to get an advance sense of what I'll have to do to get it connected to the cable modem that I'm using with my current Digital Audio G4.
Will the iBook self-configure if I have have it connected to the cable modem when it first starts up, or do I need to record the TCP/IP stuff from the G4 for use with the iBook?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Paul,
If you have a firewire cable, that will work. Just start your G4 up in target disk mode. If you don't have one just connect the two with an ethernet patch cable. Unplug it from the modem and plug it into the iBook then turn on file sharing on both machines. On the iBook select Go>Connect to Server and click on Browse. Double click on the G4 and enter your user name and password (if needed).

Normally you would use the standard (straight through) ethernet patch cable.

  • WRT54G V5 loses connection to BEFCMU10 cable modem

I have a BEFCMU10 on my cable internet service, with a WRT54G downstream. The cable modem works fine, and when the computer is connected directly to it, all is well.
When I connect the WRT54G, all is fine for, say, 8 hours, then the computer loses the connection. Cycling the power to the WRT is required to get up and running again.
I suspect that I have not configured the WRT correctly. It's set to use DHCP to connect to the BEFCMU. Are there specific settings I need to make for this setup?Message Edited by stowaway on 08-21-2006 05:05 PM

If you connect your computer directly to the modem, are you able to go online without any problem? If yes, try to access the setup page of the router and check the status page of the router and check if your getting a public IP address under internet IP. If your not getting a public IP, go to the setup tab and click on mac address clone, enable the mac clone and click clone pc's mac then save the settings. after that do a power cycle on the router and the modem and try to check again the status page of the router if your getting a public ip. If your getting a public ip and still having the same problem, try to lower down the MTU of the router to 1490 up to 1300.

  • WRT54GS slamming Cable modem with Packets

I'm having trouble with my WRT54GS locking up my Cable Modem. TWC says its slamming the cable modem with too many packets. Is there any way to check this on my end? Full story below.
A little about my set up. I have Time Warner Cable business class Roadrunner service. 5 Static IPs. 4 being used at the moment. The Cable modem has a 4 port switch built in. Port 1 has a month or so old WRT54GS router v7 latest firmware (Gateway mode, Channel 6). Port 2 goes to my Sonicwall Barracuda them my internal network which also has WRT54GS router v7 latest firmware (Router mode, Channel 1). Both routers are sitting next to each other. Ports 3 & 4 have a Vonage Router hooked to each of them.
I started having trouble April 5 with the Internet being down that morning, then that night and falling morning. I power cycled the Cable modem to restore service. Called Time Warner Cable after the third reset. They told me that didn't see anything wrong from their end and I should call them when it is down. I did this and they said they would send someone out the next morning Friday. They came out on Friday morning and Checked cable which the tech said was fine so he replaced the Cable modem around 11:30. Fifteen minutes after he left the internet went down. I called TWC again. They did diagnostics on the cable modem from their end and saw that whatever was hooked up to port 1 was sent out 400 packets/sec. I think they said the cable modem could only handle 300. Port 1 is connect a WRT54GS v7 (latest firmware). We are using it for our Blackberries from Cincinnati Bell for WIFI and UMA service (like T-Mobiles @Home service) for VoWiFi. I turned off all the phones but the router was still slamming the modem with packets. I turned off the WiFi just in case someone hacked our WPA2 key. Still slamming the router with packets with only my laptop hardwired to it for setting up the router. I turned off the router and the modem wasn't getting hammered anymore. Port 2 which is my internal network was only up to 150 after open a lot of TV shows. Ports 3 & 4 nothing. I disconnected the WRT54GS hooked to Port 1.
15 minutes after I got off the phone with TWC internet goes down. They send out a tech on Saturday to check the line again. he sees a slight problem on the line but it should not be causing a problem which the first guy might have thought. But since I am having trouble he goes outside and checks the connections. He finds loose connection and a bad line cap (blocking cable TV). He fixes the connections and replaced the line cap. He comes back inside and rechecks the line. Everything is great no more fluxation of signal or packet loss. I hook the WRT54GS back but it still takes down the modem. So I figure that it's just bad. So I take the WRT54GS from my internal network and set it up to match the one for the Blackberries it's replace. I install a WAP54G on the internal network in it's place. I can't get my Blackberry to get a UMA connection and doing Google searched find this page
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_Router_Tips
I set up my router and Assess point with the setting from the above except the channel setting leaving them on channel 6 & 1 so they don't interfere with each other. Set: Fragment Threshold : 2304 (256-2346), RTS Threshold : 2304 (0-2347) and Beacon Interval : 50 (20-1024 ms). I also Enable WMM QOS. My phone connects and internet seems to be staying up Saturday Evening. I come to work Sunday afternoon and Internet is still up. I check my phone I have UMA signal and everything is right with the world. 20 minutes later internet goes down. I unplug the WRT54GS and power cycle the cable modem. I am now waiting to see it the internet will stay up without any WRT54GS hooked up.
I have not had a problem before and both Linksys are not even 6 months old. I have read review were people have had trouble with the WRT54GS. Were some people have no trouble will other all kinds of trouble.

As you said cable connected to the pc is working fine!!...connect modem to the router WRT54GS...reset the router once (30 secs) in such a way that Power light on the router is blinking...power cycle complete network i.e., unplug modem & router power cable for 30 secs...plug in modem power cable once lights are solid green plug in the power cable to the router...its important that after upgrading firmware resetting the router is important...so try this & it should deifnately work.Do the wireless & advanced wireless settings as router is currently in default settings.
Also, you want to connect your access point WAP54G to the router & open the setup page of WAP54G using 192.168.1.245 do the wireless settings & try connecting to the wireless router & then check....should work.

  • Time Capsule connectivity issues with cable modem

I have Comcast internet service (coming through a Linksys CM100 modem, no router) plugged directly to a 2TB dual-band TimeCapsule. In the past this has been working, and the TimeCapsule has been providing internet access to three Macs, as well as backing them up. I also have an AirPort Extreme base station (not the dual-band one but not the 2003-era UFO-shaped one either) that has been connected to the TimeCapsule over house ethernet to provide wireless through the rest of the house. Last night my connection kept dropping out. I could connect to one wifi network and it would not work, then I would connect to the other and it would work for a while before stopping. I have disconnected everything and then replugged only the cable modem and my TimeCapsule. When ethernet is plugged directly into my iMac from the modem, I get an internet connection without issue. When I plug it into the TimeCapsule, it reports an internet connectivity error. It says it gets no IP address, and no DHCP setting that I provide it with alleviates this message.
I'd be gratful for any suggestions on how to fix this issue. I don't really want to wipe the TimeCapsule completely, as it contains our backups to last July.

When ethernet is plugged directly into my iMac from the modem, I get an internet connection without issue. When I plug it into the TimeCapsule, it reports an internet connectivity error.
Because cable modems associate and "remember" the device with which they have established a connection, they need a complete reset whenever you change the device that is immediately connected to them.
Push the reset button, If present, on your modem
    Power off the modem
Pull the battery if it is easily accessible
Power off everything else on the network, order if not important
    Wait at least 15 minutes
Make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule
Power up the modem and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Power up the Time Capsule the same way
Power up each of your other devices about a minute apart
Check for proper operation the network.

  • Airport Extreme won't connect with my cable modem (Time Warner)

OK, I'm tired of staring at a blinking amber light. I'm reaching out to anyone out there who's had this problem. I've got everything connected right, the software loaded, the connections set on my laptop (Macbok Pro). But still my Airport Extreme won't connect to the Internet. I've tried different cables, rebooting both my modem and my Airport. For the record, I've had a Mac IT guy from my advertising agency come by my house and make sure that everything's installed and hooked up right. But it still keeps saying that my IP address is invalid, even though I can connect (wired) using the modem.
I suspect I'll just have to take it to the Genius Bar or something. But anybody got any ideas? I really want to join the 'n' generation....

atotheb, Welcome to the discussion area!
Did you power off the cable modem when switching the Ethernet connection from laptop to AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)? This is usually required.

  • Time Capsule does not wirelessly connect to wireless cable modem gateway

I am trying to get Time capsule to act as what I think is supposed to be a wireless bridge (Apple retail employee's advice) to enable an old G4 iMac upstairs to have wireless ("Airport") online access from the wifi cable modem downstairs. I can get everything to work when I run ethernet cable down the stairs but avoiding that is exactly why I bought the Time Capsule.
I thought time capsule was a wireless device! how do I get it to  speak to the gateway?? Right now it is blinking amber slowly.
Havent tried yet but I would ideally like to run time machine back up of my Macbook pro, from wherever I am, upstairs or downstairs.

Thanks everyone. My understanding is that the time capsule needs to be hard wired to the gateway , not what apple retail store "genius" told me. I really wanted to wifi-enable the stranded G4 (and thus access the laserwriter 8500 cabled to it) upstairs.
-- now I'm re-reading bob timmons' remark, and wondering: i don't think I need time capsule to be a router, do I? I just need it to connect to the G4 with a cable, and receive wifi from the gateway ( ... and do time machine backups). I really only need one ethernet port, and the wifi connectivity.
so on a whim I had also ordered a airport express, thinking it would be fun to get iTunes on an old stereo system. Now I think I need it to do the job of wifi-enabling the upstairs G4 instead. Just came this afternoon. We'll see if this allows me to get rid of the ethernet cable mess.
But first I will try to (restore factory defaults, and then) reconfigure to "join" an existing wifi network (which so far is just the macbook pro and the cable modem gateway). My confidence level that this will work: poor.
