Want to edit/control volume small part of audio within a clip

I have some video in which someone coughs loudly right by the camera mic. I want to be able to just lower the volume during this cough so that it's just not so loud (there is music playing underneath so I can't just mute the cough or add white noise). You used to be able to do this so easily in previous versions of iMovie (there was a volume track that operated similarly to the one in Garage Band).
The only way I can figure to do it in iMovie 09 is to split the clip right at the beginning and end of the cough and then lower the volume of that new clip. That is super tedious and doesn't work very well. Does anyone know a better way?

That's the only way I'm aware of. I guess if you've got lots of edits like this it would become tedious, but one or two isn't too bad. It would be nice if in the next iteration of iMovie the "rubber banding" volume control was re-introduced.

How can I adjust a small section of sound within a clip?

I'm working with Mavericks, iMovie 10.0.5 on OSX 10.9.4. I want to lower a small section of sound within a video clip without having to lower sound for the entire clip. I could do this in the previous iMovie version. How can I do this now?

Hold down the Option key and double-click on the audio volume level line. That will add a control point where you can adjust the volume on either side. Add more control points such that you can set the level to what you want where you want.

How to Equalize volume between parts of audio tracks

Dear Experts:
Using PRE 7 I have created a video using different recording devices (camera, lavalier, direct into computer) and since I have defective hearing I have a hard time making the different sections of the audio track at the same audio output level when I make/play the dvd it goes up and down in a very disturbing way to most viewers.
The yellow rubber band method is not very accurate and even tho I try to make all the same level, since some of them were recorded "louder" than ot\hers originally the db settings dont help. When I try the audio mixer approach same problem.
Is there anyway to highlight all the parts of the total audio track and make them all the same level?
Appreciate any suggestions.

Tom,
The Audio Mixer can be used in several ways.
1.) it can be used to monitor the Levels, just like with the Audio Meters
2.) it can be used to adjust an Audio Track statically and for the entire Audio Track (more on this later)
3.) it can be used to apply Track Keyframes, when the Slider is adjusted during playback. This creates a lot of Track Keyframes, and I have changed the default timing of those Keyframes, as the default seems too frequent for my needs.
Now, one workflow would be to place your loud Clips onto one Audio Track, and the ones with the proper Levels on another. Then, in Audio Mixer, adjust the Track w/ the too loud Clips, down a bit. Playback to test and adjust (not while in playback) to suit.
I use #2 and #3 most often.
As Steve points out, the Clips can have their Volume changed, with the fixed Effect>Volume. This can also be done several ways. One of the first things that I would do is zoom in on the Timeline horizontally, until just my Clip was occupying most of the visible area. Next, you can click-drag on the Audio Track's Header junction, to expand that vertically. This can be a bit tricky, as finding the right point to click-drag is like searching for pixels. Between the Audio Tracks and in the Header area, slowly move the Cursor, until it turns into parallel lines with arrows, click and drag to expand that Track vertically. This will show the yellow "rubberband" more clearly. Now, if your change is to be static, only affecting that Clip and all of that Clip equally, just click on the rubberband and slowly drag it up, or down. If you wish to do this Volume change dynamically, then you will want to add Keyframes. I find this much more easily done in the Effects Control Panel (with Clip Selected, Edit Effects), and use the little Timeline in it. With the fixed Effect>Volume, you would toggle the "stopwatch" so that Keyframes are active, and add those to adjust/modulate your Volume. Is there a way to remove only parts of audio in a clip (remove music but keep voiceover)

I've been given a promotional video to edit, with a voiceover and background music. The file I have is an MP4 file, and I do not have the separate pieces of the file (Video, audio, and music).
Is there a way to remove the music but keep the voiceover? I doubt there is..

If the voiceover is in a narrow range of frequencies you might get lucky. You can use the Graphic Equalizer to reduce the volume of all frequencies except those that the voice is using. There may still be some music in these frequencies as well, but it is worth a try.
Select your clip and open the inspector to the Audio Tab. Under Audio Enhancements, you will see the word "Equalization". Over to the right you will see a small icon of a graphic equalizer. Click this and it will open the Graphic Equalizer.
That will bring up the Graphic Equalizer window. You can set the Graphic Equalizer to display 10 bands of frequencies or 31 bands. Choosing 31 bands will give you more control.
There are probably many other things you could try, since you have access to all the Logic Pro X synthesizers in FCPX, but that is the most straightforward.

Go to to the image I'm working on --- selected the image, the clicked on edit. When nothing happened I double clicked the image. Still elements didn't open. Then I opened the Elements editor, went back to iphoto and tried the entire process again. the photo still didn't open on Elements 13 for editing.
I have 3 Elements 13 books as well as looked on line--all my references say the exact same thing ---- iPhoto>Preferences>advanced>edit in external program>photoshop Elements

I spoke with application technical support. There appears to be nothing wrong with my copy of iPhoto. However there is no support from Adobe. I waited for over 1.5 hours for chat support several days ago, and finally gave up.

You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:

Other people have been having similar problems with songs over a number of days, I assume that there has been a problem with Apple's servers.
Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting the incomplete tracks from your iTunes library and redownload them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if they re-download in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find those songs and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

I want to use the expression edit control in a VC++ DLL, how?

as mentioned I want to use the expression edit control in my DLL written with VSC++ 2005 MFC. But I ran into some problems:
If I just add the ExpressionEdit control from the toolbar to my dialog then the dialog will not be shown during runtime. As soon as I delete the control the dialog shows up.
In the TS examples is one called 'TCL' (...National Instruments\TestStand 4.1.1\Examples\Tcl\source\EditSubstep). This is programmed in C++ and uses the expression edit control.
The original dll works fine but as soon as I compile the editsubstep with my VS 2005 I get a runtime error (see image).
What do i have to do to be able to use this control?
Has anybody an working example for me?

You'll have to edit it using a third-party app, or on a computer, or the easiest way: take a screen shot while viewing the pic, then use that screen shot as wallpaper. (Tap home and power buttons briefly; you'll see a flash and hear a click if sounds are on - the screen shot will then be in your Camera Roll.)

JEditorPane: how to replace small parts of the document?

Im trying to create an application that will allow two people to type into two different JEditorPanes, but have the two people essentially editing the same document. So if one person types someting into thier frame, I want that modification sent to the other frame as well.
The problem I've come across is how to make changes to the contents of the frame without interfering with the person whos trying to type into it. That problem boils down to how do you replace only a small part of the document whithout taking control of the users caret?

Hopfully I got your problem right. To change only small parts of the EditorPane's document should not be the probelm you can get it with EditorPane.getDocument(). But I think you have to take control over the caret, because the when user 1 has finished editing and sends the doc to user 2 who is editing the doc, user 2's caret position will change because the document length has changed.
The easiest way would be to add an input area (TextArea) for each user where they can type theit text and than to add the text into the document when they press enter, so you don't have the trouble with te caret position. If you don't want to do this then you could try that: the input of the users is cached while they are typing (not changing the doc) till they press enter. Then the doc is send to the other user, the users doc in the pane is updated and his current typing is added to the end of the new received doc. You can figure out the correct position by doc.getLength() and set the new caret position to doc.length + currentTyping.length

Cannot control Volume in Kompakt Patches. Anyone?

for the sake of efficiency i want to make a multi from an instance in of kompakt for RA. (NB this is kompakt NOT kontakt)
the manual both in RA and for kompakt is very sketchy as to how to do this.
as i understand it, without the option 'use std cc for volume and pan' i should be able to control volume with cc0.
therefore, i can create single channel instances and convert the cc7 data to cc0 on its way to the channel strip with RA loaded in, and the cc0's via the indiviudally assigned midi channels should operate the volume for each patch.
but no, it does not work. i cannot even get the volume knob for the patch to write automation in latch mode on the track for the kompakt player.
i am completely flummoxed. if i am missing something then its awfully well hidden....
anyone else? or do i just have to load instances for each instrument? what about the stand alone for kompakt. i don't seem to have that. anyone know where i can get it? errr...and yes i have tried the native instruments website but i am getting sick of the dead ends.....

hi mate, no i know about kontakt and it is no problem here.
but according to the kompakt manual, volume information for each individual patch is assigned to cc0 (unless you set the preference for it to be standard cc7).
but it ain't working.
in my scenario, i am using single channel insts created in the environment and then patched to a transformer which turns the cc7 messages generated by the volume slider on the single channle insts to cc0. this should (via the assigned midi channel) change the volume within kompakt.
i have experimented with a single fader. i have tried the option for cc7 standard both on and off. restarted kompakt as instructed and even restarted logic.
nothing.
usually, if you set latch on the channel strip and fiddle with a knob in the plug-in interface it will write automation which you can then discern and do the environment finagling without any problems.
but nothing. no automation is written. if you turn a volume knob for an individual patch it out to generate its own midi messages which you can view with the midi monitor.
nothing.
i really don't understand it. it's clearly something to do with kompakt but i surely can't be the only one.

Initially I could find no cause. Then I tried right click - Edit and on the affected images, always get this warning:
"Image Cannot Be Edited - This photo was previously edited with another application or with an early version of Iphoto. Duplicate this photo to edit it." and a "Duplicate To Edit" Button is displayed.
The external Editor defined for iPhoto is Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Now, I reckon the MUST be others out there affected by this same apparent Preview bug, yet my searches have not revealed any answers. Also seems impossible to find a contact number for adobe???

Main "Play Control" volume changes on its own when I open these programs, and when they're closed the main volume resets to where it was before the program was opened.
Surely I'm not the only one who has had this problem before.. I've had the problem with both Creative soundcards I've owned, before and after different drivers installations.
It can be very irritating and can potentially lead to damaged speakers if I'm not paying close attention to what my various volume knobs are set at before and after I open these programs.

Add num edit control to existing MFC DLL

Hi,
I'm using Visual C++ 6.0 and Visual Studio 6.0 SP3, with Measurement Studio 6.0.0 (eval version).
I have a C++ DLL which is using shared MFC. It holds various dialogs that my app needs. Onto the waveform dialog, I want to add NI graph (not 3D graph) and num edit controls.
I looked at the tutorial for "Manually Adding Components to My MFC-Based Project" but it seems that the additional steps don't apply to either of the controls I'm adding.
Currently my waveform dialog contains only VS controls, and it works as expected both in the Visual Studio debugger and outside of it.
So in the Visual Studio resource editor, I right-click, select "Insert ActiveX Control", and select the "CWNumEdit Control (National Instruments)", and the path shown is "C:\\Windows\system32\cwui.ocx". I change its style so it looks like the classic control, and change its name. My project builds and links with no additional header files or libs added to the project.*
Now I run my app in the Visual Studio Debugger. But when I call the code to create an instance of my dialog, it returns a 0 instead of a handle (indicating that it failed to create the object). (I can't step into the call to create the dialog.) But when I call GetLastError() it returns a 0, indicating no error!
*I believe I at some point had some old Measurement Studio stuff loaded, which apparently had come along with other National Instruments installs that I had done. Is that possibly confusing my compile/link?
What am I missing? Thanks in advance for any help ...
