Want to get Windows on my Mac

Hi, I have a MacBook which still had OSX Tiger as the running program. I wanted to run windows on my mac so I can use a PC only based program for work. I know that I have to upgrade to OSX Leopard because it has Boot camp on it. I only really need to run the one PC program on the windows side and maybe use the internet, as I like to do everything else on the Mac side.
My main question is what is the best Windows install to get, with the cost of the upgrade to Leopard and having to buy the windows install disc its getting a bit more expensive than I would like. Can anyone give me some good advise as to where I can get a cheap windows install from or what is the best windows package to use as I only need windows for one program and to save a few files, as I have office and all my other programs on the Mac side.
Please advise
Thanks

Get either Parallels or VMWare Fusion. According to Walt Mossberg in WSJ they are both good, but VMWare in its latest release has features that Parallels has not caught up with. Two of the BIG reasons to get one of these rather than rebooting to Windows (as Bootcamp requires) is that first they share the same disk partition, and second, you can drop Windows apps onto the Dock and run them from within OS X without having to explicitly switch to Windows.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can purchase Lion from the Mac App Store. You will need to meet the requirements for Lion, but the Mac App Store will tell you whether your Mac is capable of running Lion or not.

  • So I want to download Windows on my Mac, but my college only offers online copies of windows

So I want to download Windows on my Mac through bootcamp, but my college only offers online copies of windows.
    What can I do?

Does the download give you an EXE file, or an ISO file?  If it's an ISO file, you have options, but if it's an EXE file, then you have to have Windows to run it.
You can always look to sources outside your college to buy a copy of Windows.

  • What is the best way to get Windows for your Mac?

I want to be able to run windows on my Macbook Pro. How do I go about getting windows?

System 7 is not the same thing as 10.7.  10.7 came out in 2011.  System 7 came out in 1991.  You can't download Windows, however you can install it on these virtualization engines:

  • I want to use Windows on my Mac, but Boot Camp doesn't work (Mac OS X 10.7.3)

Everyone knows that w/ Boot Camp you can use Windows on Mac, but I can't.

    common issues:
downloading the drivers with Boot Camp Assistant
Not reading the guide from in Boot Camp Assistant
Wanting to use XP (not supported)
    Not enough disk space
Space is too fragmented - and people don't know or understand the error or how to even backup and then erase and restore (very basic part of prevention and use of computers).

Hold down the alt key immediately after power-up, select which OS you want to boot, holding ctrl when you select an OS makes it the default.

  • Getting windows on a mac

I'm thinking about making the switch from PC to Mac. What is the best way to get a dual OS running? I'd like to get Vista Business so that I can have easy connectivity with my school's network. What difficulties can I expect to have? What do I need to know about running a dual OS?

I'm sure there are many books and other references out there for the Windows user to orient them to the Mac, but I haven't seen any. I've used Windows for years and had a heck of a tme learning the Mac paradigm. Part of it is simple muscle memory -- you have to get used to the "open apple" key even though there is a perfectly good ctrl key right there... After a couple of months I now feel very proficient, so hang in there and you will too.
I am a Parallels user. I started with 2.0 and am now using 3.0. I thought 2.0 was more stable... IMHO there is no reason not to leave Parallels running all the time. I have a laptop and my suspicion (can't prove it) is that Parallels doesn't recover from sleep mode very well. One thing that 3.0 has that (I don't think) 2.0 had was the ability to have a file association in OS X that actually launches the file in Parallels/Windows.
I find that the Mac Word is very buggy and I don't think any of the Office software interfaces were implemented well on the Mac. So my preference is to open Word docs in Windows. By having the file association in the Mac, I can be on the Mac side, double click on mydoc.doc and it opens within Windows. Use the Coherence mode and it's almost like you were still on your native Mac except for those darn ctrl key combinations.
I think there is a way to alter the behavior of the ctrl, alt, and open apple keys but I haven't had the patience to figure it out. I've looked all over and can't find a reference.
Apple is moving more and more every day to coexist with the Windows world. IMHO, they would make a lot of money (more money that is) by making it much easier to switch. Two things they could do would be making it easy to switch how the ctrl and open apple keys work and the other thing would be to make the Home, End, and Page Up/Down keys work exactly the same. Again, it's a matter of muscle memory. Why force someone to change when there is zero functional (only historical) reasons for the way the keys work. I'm not saying that they should totally switch and screw long-time Apple users, I'm just saying it should be a choice.

  • Help! Can't get Windows to recognize Mac sync'd iPod

I have been using my 4G iPod with my iMac G5 to back up files. I'm on the road and urgently need some files and I'm no where near my iMac. I connected my iPod to my Windows laptop and put it in disk mode, but when I try to open it, I get an error message saying I the disk is not formatted. The iPod is also not coming up at all in iTunes. Am I doing something wrong? Besides trying to work between an iMac and a Windows computer!!
    Thanks!

You need special software, such as MacDrive or Xplay to allow a Windows PC to read a Mac formatted iPod.

  • X11 dual head - want to get window manager (gnome) on one screen only

What I want sounds simple, but I just can't get it done... Hope anyone is able to help me!
    What I've got:
Four monitors (two at each of my nVidia graphic cards). Both devices are configured using nVidia's Twinview, giving me two virtual screens (:0.0 and :0.1).
I can use xinerama to get one huge desktop, but this doesn't work well, as the borders between two screens of the same device are no longer recognized in this case, causing windows to always span over two monitors on maximization.
I can also not use xinerama, giving me two independant gnome session.
    What I want:
I want gnome to only start on one screen (i.e. two monitors), leaving the other screen blank but available. They don't need a WM as they will run nothing but a fullscreen mplayer or an xterm that will periodically output some stuff. I actually don't even need input devices for the second screen and it would be good if the mouse was restricted to the gnome-screen.
However, I didn't manage to make gnome start on only one screen. I don't care if it's done using one xsever with two screens attached or if I can do it starting a second xserver, I just want it resolved in some way.
I've tried to restrict gnome to :0.0 by setting the DISPLAY variable or giving gnome-sessions --display option. Both to no avail. When trying to start a second xsever (different layouts, each using one of the screens), my original screen becomes all white and on the second screen nothing happens. Any ideas?

  • I want to install windows on my mac pro but my superdrive is dead...

I have a 2008 Mac Pro (Intel) running 10.10.  I'm trying to install windows (8.1) on my machine which I have done several times before (mostly XP and windows 7).  I've created a bootable USB drive using bootcamp but my machine won't boot from it or recognize it on startup.  From research it doesn't seem that machines that came with super drives will allow this.  Since my super drive is dead I need a way to install windows without it - buying a new one would only be used to install windows.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I can have the USB show up either with or without pulling the OS X hardrive.  When I try to launch it however nothing happens although the USB flickers forever showing activity.  I've tried creating the usb from both .cdr and .iso files with no difference.
I looked at the link you posted and it seems that the OP was only able to install windows from his DVD player.  I really hope there is another way and appreciate your help.

  • My keyboard and my mouse doesn't work when I want to install windows on my mac.

    Hi,
    I have a macbook 15 retina, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 Memory Go 1600 MHz DDR3, OS X 10.9.5  (13F34).
I'm trying to install Bootcamp, but when they ask me to choose the language I'm not able to move or write. So I can't install windows. I tried to do everything from the beginnig 3 times by following carefully each step. I'm using windows 7 professionnal to install boorcamp. I'm sorry with my english, I'm french speaker.
How can I resolve this problem?

    1. Did you use Bootcamp Assistant?
    2. Did you build a USB with Windows 7 ISO and Bootcamp drivers?
    3. You should use a USB2.0 disk, not a USB3.0 disk (flash drive).
    4. What year is the Retina MBP?
