Want to learn more about the command line for Mac OS X

Hi, I'm kind of new here...I've been using my MacBook since last summer, however I want to really get a feel of the command line and would like some recommendations on how to learn more about it.
Looks like it is based off of BSD, and I've been using Linux for about 10 years now and also have a CompTIA Linux+ cert, however some of the commands aren't the same.
So, if anyone can post some websites/recommendations that would be great.
thanks

Buy any one or more of the many books available at Amazon.com about Unix under OS X. Linux and Unix are related but not the same. Even FreeBSD Unix is not the same as what's implemented under the OS X hood.
And you will find other good books at PeachPit.com.
There also is a separate Unix forum here.

  • Where can I learn more about the Logic Environment?

I've been using LogicPro for a while now - since version 7 came out - and I'm ready to learn more about the mysterious Logic Environment. Anyone know of a good tutorial or website on this topic? I don't have a specific question - what I need is a general overview.
My sessions are primarily audio recording and mixing with a virtual instrument from time to time. I rarely use MIDI except to play the synths and instruments.
My environmental experience so far has been limited to creating and naming audio objects, accessing "hidden" faders and as an alternate to the mix views provided in the global and track mixers.
I'd prefer free advice but I'm not against paying if it's worth it. I have read the manual but I have a feeling that it will be more helpful once I have a better grasp on the big picture. It's a reference manual more than a how-to.
My MIDI devices are an Axiom-61 and PreSonus FaderPort.
    Thanks,
    John

Apple has what they call "online seminars" available on the main Logic page
    http://www.apple.com/logicpro/
If you look on the bottom right hand side of the page, you see a link for online seminars. You'll have to go through a regstration process, then you can watch 3 or 4 streaming Quicktime videos of people using different functions in Logic. There's nothing really in depth there, but it does show you a few useful shortcuts and methods.

  • I want to know more about the Sanapshot tool. What is its purpose? how do I use it?

I want to know more about the Sanapshot tool. What is its purpose? how do I use it? I have searched Firefox Help, but did not find a clear answer.

That is not part of Firefox. It is either an add-on for Firefox which you installed, or it is a separate program you have.
Also, is '''Sanapshot tool''' the correct name? Or did you mean '''''Snapshot'''''?

  • Learning more about the features in PS touch

I was looking at PS touch, maybe for my ipod mini.
I was hoping to get more of a sense of what the features are, but it seems Adobe has replaced information with hype, giving us the Disney version of what their programs are about.
I'd like to know more about the features of PS Touch, specifically:
I assume I can use layers, but do they have modes such as darken, lighten, overlay, soft light, etc?
Can I create masks in these layers, so I have control over which part of the layer is applied to the image?
Does the curves tool have more than 3 points to adjust, can you add points as with full PS?
If I was working off my camera's memory card hooked up to the iPod mini, can I then do a save as of the image I'm working on, either saving it to the card or my device (in part to create a new image and to also keep the original) ?
It's very frustrating that this information is not more readily available to us. also, I may have missed it, but i didn't see a link to the forums from the Adobe pages, not under Learning, or about Adobe, or?
    Regards, David

    In order:
Yes, PS Touch uses layer blending modes just like in Photoshop (and Photoshop Elements). It doesn't have *every* blending mode, but the basics (like the ones you listed) are there.
The best that I can explain it as far as "masks" in PS Touch goes is that you paint your desired effect onto your image (via the Effects Paint tool). You do not need a mask layer per se as the effect is contained as you paint over the desired area. (You can adjust size, hardness, flow and opacity of the brush in this tool. If you have a tablet with pressure-senstive support, you can control size and opacity as well dynamically like you would with a Wacom graphics tablet connected to a desktop.)
You can add/subtract as many points as you want in the Curves adjustment. (There's a general Curves adjustment and one provided under the Effects Paint tool; both use the same interface for options.)
I don't think so, as the file system in PS Touch is self-contained (at least under Android; not sure about iOS). When you go to save a project, it's added into the main interface. (You can create folders to manage these projects, btw.) You can then export projects under a desired file type (like PSD or JPEG) locally or to a service like Adobe's own Creative Cloud or Dropbox.

  • How to enable telemetry logs and where can i find the command line for sun

Hi i tried creating the telemetry logs directory but the logs are not being populated. i created the following directory:-
    /opt/SUNWmsgsr/data/telemetry/imap/usersns1
    where usersns1 is the userid.
Also pl. tell me where can i get the command list for sun one messaging server to use the command line utility to list, delete mailboxes. also can i search for all the mailboxes under one domain name. if yes then which command i have to use.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Hi i tried creating the telemetry logs directory but
the logs are not being populated. i created the
    following directory:-
    /opt/SUNWmsgsr/data/telemetry/imap/usersns1
where usersns1 is the userid.Make sure the permissions (ownership) on the user directory and the sub directory match those that messaging server uses - by default mailsrv:mail. This is the most common cause of the telemetry data not being created. The other thing to verify is that the user's account isn't stored as user@domain, otherwise you may need to create the directory as the entire user@domain (try both just to be sure).
Also pl. tell me where can i get the command list
for sun one messaging server to use the command line
utility to list, delete mailboxes. also can i search
for all the mailboxes under one domain name. if yes
then which command i have to use.The Messaging Server reference guide is a good place to start (lists all the command-line utilities/flags and what-not):
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4429?l=en
The mboxutil command is used to list/create/delete mailboxes and you can use a pattern to only list those mailboxes in a specific domain.
    Regards,
    Shane.
    thanks in advance.

  • 7z command line for Mac OS X 10.5.8?

    Hello.
I am having problems finding a command line version of 7z like in Linux. I found GUI ones, but I prefer the command line (e.g., 7z foobar.7z ~/*). Does one exist for 10.5.8?

  • Where can we learn more about the next version of FB?

The Air 3.4 release notes say that a new version of Flash Builder, now in beta, will be released in August.
Is there any place where we can read about the new features and pricing?

Rich text is a text format
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RichTextFormat
It allows for text formatting (like various fancy fonts, lists, links, colors etc). you can open TextEdit and play with it. Plain text allows for none of that. you can only type text and that's it.
Mail converts Rich Text to html when you send messages composed in Rich Text. as i said most mail clients should understand it but there may be some problems. I don't have much experience with other mail clients so can't say more.

  • I want to learn more about linux

So, I started off with Ubuntu about 5 months ago. It was spring break and I got bored of Ubuntu so I decided to install Arch. Things went well and I have never looked back. After about a month of really customizing and figuring stuff out I felt smarter, but when I put things into perspective I still feel as though I am lacking knowledge.
I have currently come to a point where I love my setup and don't want to change stuff in case I mess it up. Don't worry I have good news. I will be receiving a laptop soon and that is going to be my guinea pig for the summer.
Some of my ideas so far:
    1) learn vim - I tried it back in my Ubuntu days, but it was too hard so I just used nano. I now feel as though I should know how to use it...
    2) try a tiling window manager - With Arch came openbox, and although it was very different from gnome / explorer.exe it has grown on me and I could never go back.
    3) learn to program - I know some very basic stuff, but I could never make a functional program. Considering I am going into "computer engineering" next year it may be a good idea.
any suggestions on other things (chances are I haven't done it), or how to do the ones already on my list would be awesome.

    1) learn vim - I tried it back in my Ubuntu days, but it was too hard so I just used nano. I now feel as though I should know how to use it...
Why bother? Just learn the deleat comands, the input comands, the save commands, and paste commands. Don't let the editor rule you, it is ment to be used.
    2) try a tiling window manager - With Arch came openbox, and although it was very different from gnome / explorer.exe it has grown on me and I could never go back.
I wouldn't bother. I tried a tiling WM, but I'm on KDE mod atm, and while I miss cirtain things, I think I found most of them in non tiling WM. I especialy recoment JWM, it's funny at first, but I grew to love it, and my KDEmod works very similarly now
    3) learn to program - I know some very basic stuff, but I could never make a functional program. Considering I am going into "computer engineering" next year it may be a good idea.
I suggest Python, as it has many great resorces (I suggest "Learning Python", by O'Reilly) and is commenly used. It also gets you into many good habits (forced indentation, easy documentation strings, and general good code manners), and the syntax is very clean.
any suggestions on other things (chances are I haven't done it), or how to do the ones already on my list would be awesome.
Learn how to use bash properly. By that I mean being able to use almost all of bash's features. It's an incredibly powerfull tool, and you do it a disservice if you do not learn it fully.

Our company provides goods & services to our customers in remote communities in Canada, that have very low bandwidth. The ability to be able to video-conference under these challenging environments is greatly needed to provide certain medical services to our customers. You low-bandwidth service might be able to solve a larger problem for us. I would like to discuss further the capability of this product and perhaps be able to test it to see if it would stand the harsh environment our communities live in.   Thanks

  • Want to learn more about shift registers and formula nodes

I am new to Labview and have looked at the example files and help files regarding shift registers and formula nodes. I was hoping that someone has a simple and detailed VI expaining how each of them(shift registers and formula nodes) works.

Formula nodes are not one of the first things you will need to be looking at. look at the help files (press ctrl-H) for some syntax examples. Shift registers are easy: they carry the value from the end of the loop back into the start of the loop. The great power of shift registers is to use them without initializing. In that case they will retain their last value as long as the vi is in memory. This is a little more advanced topic, though.
I included a simple example that illustrates what a shift register does. Requires Labview 7.1
    Good luck,

  • Want to know more about the content pane...

    Hi,
For starter, what's the difference between the following code if there is a difference...
    myFrame.setContentPane(new JDesktopPane());
myFrame.getContentPane.add(new JDesktopPane());I want to include a status bar (JLabel and/or JButton), will you recommend adding it to myFrame or the JDesktopPane ?
Thanks.... I have been struggling to get this right; my status bar won't show up; so I wanted to first make sure that I have the "right" direction to work from first.

By default the contentPane is a JPanel with a BorderLayout.
    When using:
myFrame.getContentPane.add(new JDesktopPane());the desktopPane is added to the Center of the BorderLayout. When using this approach you can still add you statusBar to the BorderLayout.SOUTH. The statusBar is completely separate from the desktopPane. This is the option I prefer.
    When using:
myFrame.setContentPane(new JDesktopPane());you are replacing the contentPane with the desktop which would mean you would need to add your statusBar to the desktop directly. This means as you display internal frames they can be painted over your statusBar
