Want to load my NEW iPod and give my old one to someone else

I received a new iPod. My daughter is inheriting the old one and she has no interest in my music - surprise! I want to wait to load the new before wiping the old.
Can I load the new one before wiping the old - just in case?
I saw the instructions for wiping the old one but what is the proper order of events?

Toots, first thing to do is buy a keyboard with punctuation marks. They are really quite cheap these days and will help to make your posts much more readable. I would also pick a model with the ability to turn the cap lock key off.

  • Buying a new ipod, and selling my old one to a friend.

I have a 32 gig ipod touch.I plan to buy a 64 gig ipod touch.Do i need to do a restore on the 32 gig , to wipe my music and apps, so i can put them on my new ipod? Also when i connect the new ipod I assume it will recognize it as a new ipod , and my friends computer will do the same.

Yes I would do a restore and then just hand it over to him. He can then activate it and sync it to his library. Then your new one you'll do the same thing.
You could just do a reset, which would delete all content and return it to a default state. But anytime I sell one I do a restore because this just allows them to start with an almost new setup. Most of the time it is a lot less problematic.
It is honestly a pretty painless process!

  • How can I move my data to a new macbook and give my old one to my child

I am getting a new macbook air and want to give my old macbook pro 13 to my daughter.  I would like to remove all my data but keep the progrtams on it when I give it to her. I have a copy of office that is usable on up to two family computers. I have been using a 1.5Tb drive for both timemachine backup and storage of itunes movies and it is hooked up thru a thunderbolt display.
Is there an easy way to pull all my files off the pro and move them to the air (they both have 500gb drives) and if I give my daughter the pro will she have to log in with my apple id to get the program updates?

    Doing what you recommended... now.
I also need to (re)create the local users with a specific GeneratedUID for each one.
I used "dscl . -read /Users/USERNAME GeneratedUID" command to get the UID of the old local users.
What is the best way to do this
Create the user and then update the UID?
    OR
Create the user while specifying the UID at creation time?
What is the command for each, i can't seem to dig up anything on google?

I am going to buy a new ipad and give my old ipad to my daughter - how do I break the connection from the old ipad and my Apple account so she does not use my icloud and can buy her own apps, etc?

Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This will not remove any third-party apps, just the settings. If you wish to restore to "as new," then:
iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (or if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or if you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
You will be prompted to Restore as New or Restore from a Backup. Choose the first option.

  • My other computer died and have my bookmark synced setup, however, I no longer have access to sync key and I do not want to generate a new key and erase my old bookmarks. How do I retrieve them?

My other computer died and have my bookmark synced with Firefox sync, however, I no longer have access to sync key and I do not want to generate a new key and erase my old bookmarks. How do I retrieve them?

Sorry, without the Sync Key you can't use Sync to recover your personal data. If you have another device that was connected that Sync account, you can recover your Sync Key from that other device in the Password Manager on non-mobile devices. See - [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/how-do-i-manage-my-firefox-sync-account?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=where-can-i-find-my-firefox-sync-key#w_where-can-i-find-my-recovery-key this].
''Firefox Sync wasn't intended to be a "backup" medium, it was made to keep certain data synchronized between multiple devices.'' That "key" is used to encrypt your data before being uploaded to the Sync server and decrypt the data as it is downloaded to one of your devices. Only you have access to that "key", to maintain security over your data no one else knows that "key".
If you still have that old PC or the hard drive from that old PC, you can connect it to the new PC via USB with a USB enclosure, and you should be able to recover that data if the hard drive didn't fail.<br />

I have just bought a new iPhone and gave my old one to my Mum. My problem is that even with a new SIM and phone number I seem to be getting her messages as well as mine on my thread. They are also being recorded as both sent and received so she must be paying twice for each SMS sent. Help please

    Wipe iPhone/iPad/iPod touch clean
There are a few steps to do:
Switch off iMessage in Settings > Messages
Switch off FaceTime in Settings > FaceTime (iPod touch 4th Generation or later, iPhone 4 or later and iPad 2 or later)
Delete iCloud in Settings > iCloud > Delete Account
Finally Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
    Un-register your device: https://supportprofile.apple.com
    Now you can sell/give.
Now, you should get her a new Apple ID to sign in the options above.

i created a 2nd itunes account, not I want to merge the 2 accts and delete the old one - how do i do this?

Any reason you created a new account instead of updating the old account with any new info?
You cannot merge accounts. Anything purchased on an account will stay linked to that account and cannot be changed.

I have purchased a new iPad and given my old one to my husband.  How do I change the Apple ID over to him.  We are having continuous confusion between the two iPads

    Hi Marg42,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
First, your husband can create his own Apple ID via the web, computer, or iPad, if he hasn't already:
    My Apple ID
    https://appleid.apple.com
iTunes: How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2731
Next, he can sign out of the Apple services that are currently using your Apple ID on your old iPad, and sign in with his own.
This article has instructions for doing so for specific Apple services:
Apple ID: What to do after you change your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5796
Alternately, he can erase the device and set it up as new using the steps in this article:

    Best Regards,

    iTunes needs QuickTime to work.
I think you will be all set if you install QuickTime standalone, not regular
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Download the isntall file to your hard drive - don't install it over the internet.

  • Will my new ipod sync to my old one?

My old 3rd gen iPod touch just broke and I want the new iPod touch. If
I get it, will I be able to put the backup of my old iPod on the new one?

    Welcome to the discussions,
yes, if you're using the same account again, iTunes will recognize the old backup after setting up the new ipod and ask you, if you would like to use this backup to restore from.

  • Time Machine almost full, can I start a new drive and NOT delete old one?

Because I had an External HD crash, I was wondering if I can start a new External Hard Drive (500 GB) from scratch (meaning I don't copy old files to it) and keep the old one as a back up to the back up??? Also, I have NOT been backing up the applications and on the new drive, would like to do that. If I move the old stuff from the 300GB, won't the Applications take up most of the 500 GB??
Or is is simply better to copy everything over (I asssume it all remains on the old 300 GB hard drive) and simply let it start rewriting? My iMac is gettin on in years and I'd like to be prepared should something happen to it.
And as you can tell, I am not very techie so please feel free to talk down to me.
Has anyone migrated to a new External HD? I have directions from Apple, is it easy????
    Thanks . . running out of space soon . . .

Just to be sure, do you mean your TM drive crashed?  Or an external HD, containing data that TM was backing-up?

Again, I'm not sure what you mean.   If you mean put the old TM drive "on the shelf" and start fresh on a new one, then yes.  Eject and disconnect it, then format the new one (see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5 if you're not sure how).  Give it a different name, so you're sure which is which, then select it as the destination via the Time Machine Preferences window.  TM will do a full backup to it, so may take a while.
The backups on the new drive will be completely separate from the old ones.
If you ever need to see or restore from the new ones, use the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per #17 in the above link.
I have NOT been backing up the applications and on the new drive, would like to do that.
Yes, it's usually not a good idea to exclude System or Applications folders.

No -- your Applications folder is probably in the range of 10-20 GBs.wn to me.
Has anyone migrated to a new External HD? I have directions from Apple, is it easy????
Again, not sure just what you mean.

  • I want to sync a second ipod touch to itunes, however my daughter has some how registered the new ipod  under my sons old one, she has deleted asll content and i have now reset it, how do i stop it being recognised as the old one

my daughters new ipod touch is being recognised as my sons old one on itunes, this has caused the ipod to lock and she has lost all content. i now want to get itunes to recognise her new ipod , but it is still recognising it as the old one, how can i sort this out

Does both your Windows and Macbook iTunes have the same library of songs?
if it  does then, much easier to proceed, else try to load the Macbook with the same library as Windows.
Note that only one of the Macbook USB port is good for iPod Classic, the other is too slow and may cause timeout, and I would suggest disconnect all other USB devices, while you Restore or Sync the iPod Classic.
Connect the iPod to the Mac, (if iTunes launch, please close it back.)
Use Disk Utility -> select the iPod Device->First Aid->Repair (use option FAT32)
After the Repair complete, eject the iPod.
    Connect back to the Mac
When iTunes launch, Restore the iPod when Prompted, (use FAT32)
    Sync your library.
    Good Luck!
