Want to make a bootable disk, but...

Recently survived a minor nightmare of "losing" my hard drive.  With disk warrior managed to get back in business.  But I realized I really need a way to boot up from a backup.  I'd prefer to use a thumb drive.  I have Super Duper (supposedly bootable) on a drive, but when I hooked up that drive, my computer apparently couldn't figure out how to boot up from it, because it didn't.
So then I looked up how to create a bootable drive or dvd, etc.  It said I needed the Lion Installer.  I went to the app store in my dock and checked on purchases, because I certainly do have Lion installed.  It showed NO purchases.  Since I apparently must have the Lion installer in order to create a bootable backup, how can I get it without re-purchasing Lion?

To boot up from a clone, you need to go to system preferences, select startup disk containing the clone, and restart.
Also, you can hold the option key down when you restart and you should have the option to choose the startup disk of your choice. You should also have the option to select the Recovery Drive this way. Holding the command-r keys down at restart is the usual way to get to the recovery drive on your boot drive.
If you have a TM backup on another drive, it also has the OSX recovery drive that can be selected by holding option key down at restart.
If you bought the computer with Lion, then the App Store will not have the purchase. The recovery drive should be part of the hardware and should work by holding command-r keys at startup.
If you did purchase it from the Apple Store and it doesn't show in the list, sign into your Account Info and see if it's not hidden. If show, you can change it back to show in the purchases.

  • Want to make a bootable clone...which software should I use?

After an accident with my previous laptop I've realised the importance of backing up all my stuff.
I decided on an OWC Mercury Elite-AL external hard drive and now it's arrived I want to make a bootable clone of my HD. Has anyone who has an OWC Drive tried the software that comes with it and is it any good? It's called intech Speedtools.
I've heard a lot of people on here talk about Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper. Which is the best (and easiest cos I'm pretty stupid) would you say or are there others I should consider? A while ago I remember reading CCC wasn't compatible with Tiger. Is this still a problem?
    Any advice, I'd be grateful...

You can make a clone using Disk Utility's restore function. I haven't tried it in a while though because it kept making three invisible folder visible on the clone. That was supposedly fixed with a 10.4 update but it kept happening to me.
Carbon Copy Cloner isn't yet truly Tiger compatible is my understanding. It hasn't been updated since the 10.3 days. Many have reported that it's started working again if you install the 10.4.2 update. I myself have been making clones of my machine with it since then and haven't had any issues. Except for some reason, I have to select the destination disk first instead of the source, otherwise the app has crashed on me on occasion.
Super Duper has a lot of fans and got a great write-up in Macworld. It's shareware but looks very easy to use. If I wasn't in such a tight financial situation right now (my business has been a little light on customers lately), that's the one I'd buy. It's not expensive though so maybe I'm just really cheap.
I've also used Lacie Silverkeeper which was a touch difficult to understand and it also made the same three invisible folders visible that Disk Utility did. I haven't tried it or checked for updates in a while though.
I actually need to make a clone of my machine today so I'm going to try and see if Disk Utility works correctly.

This is not difficult and you will not have to download from the app store.
your computer has what is called  a recovery partition that came with it.
simply hold cmd+R while you boot up. let go a second after you hear the chime.
you will boot into the recovery partition.
Use disk utlity to format your usb drive and then exit Disk utlity and go to Reinstall Mountain Lion.
it will ask  you which disk you want to install ML onto. Choose your new USB drive.
    easy peasy

  • How can I make a bootable disk for Mountain Lion?

How can I make a bootable disk for Mountain Lion?

    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • I have 2 hardisk,so i want to set two scratch disk  but i doesnt work

    i have  500g and  another 160g hardisk.
such as i set up scratch disk in d: drive in 500g hardisk and f: driver in 160g hardisk
but i have found photoshop just use  d: driver as scratch disk ,and never use f: driver.
    why?

Okay! So you want to RAID your Scratch Disks! I've not tried that, and I don't know how Photoshop would handle a RAID Scratch Disk; I'm afraid someone smarter than me will have to visit the thread.
But even it were possible, both disks would have to be the the same size/capacity, speed, and cache; you can't RAID different sized disks like the ones you have, so you'd either have to have 2x 500GB, or 2x 160GB drives to start with, plus a dedicated RAID card to do the processing for you, you wouldn't want your CPU to be handling that load as well as everything else, the drives would also need to be internal as well, not an external RAID enclosure, where the I/O port becomes a bottleneck.
If you can, change the name of your question, "I have 2 hardisk, so I want to set two scratch disk but it doesn't work," to something like, "Need to RAID Photoshop Scratch Disks!" and hopefully someone who knows a LOT more about Photoshop and RAID than me will be able to give you an answer.
Also, please give as much information about your system as possible, what Operating System are you running, is it 32 or 64 Bit, Processor type and speed, installed RAM, Motherboard (some support RAID natively) etc.
    Good luck!

  • How can I make a bootable disk with some third party applications to use?

My Macbook's performance has slowed WAY down and I want to try running a couple of different tools on it to optimize it.
Thing is, some if not all of them require you to boot from a different disk, and since I got them online, I don't have bootable CDs for them.
The OS X install disk doesn't allow you to access files on your HD and neither does DiskWarrior's DVD, so is there any way at all to make a bootable CD which will show me a finder window with the tools I need or anything like that?
I KNOW that BootCD exists for older versions of mac, and frustratingly that's the only answer I have come across online despite the fact that it doesn't work for Tiger.
Please help, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Argh, posted this in the wrong section, AND I figured out how to do it myself anyway...
Could a mod please close this? Apologies to everyone for making a balls of this

  • How can I make a bootable disk so as to repair my drive?

    Hello,
I am away from home and not carrying my Tiger install DVD. I had three crashes after installing Safari Beta 2 days ago and now disk utility reports failure on exit when verifying my Macbook drive. To repair this I need to boot from some other medium and run Disk Utility from there. Is it possible for me to make a bootable DVD? Or a bootable USB memory stick(the one I am carrying is 1 gig in size)? Or can I download something to make it possible? thanks a lot, LJ
PS this has happened me 3 times in a year since moving to mac and it peeves me greatly that such a great OS cannot solve its own directory structure problems - the way Scandisk does for windows.

thanks for the suggestion. I have tried fsck before but for me it has never solved the problem - afterwards, verify disk in Disk Utility still reports failure on exit. Seems I get myself into the biggest possible diffs! Fsck is supposed to do even more than disk utility but I have not found it so. In my previous diffs, when I boot from another medium and run "repair disk," it (nearly!) always solves the problem. If anyone else can give me an answer I would be most grateful LJ

  • Want to make a bootable DVD for Grandson to use.

I picked up a eMac at an auction and want to give it to my Grandson so he will stay off his dad's Powerbook G4. I bought the OSX 10.4 install disks so I can do a legal install. However, I plan on limiting what is installed as a lot is stuff he doesn't need. He is eleven and his dad says he is good at getting into things that can cause the computer to crash. Thus the desire to get him is own computer.
BUT, when he crashes and burns, as I fully expect him to, it would be good if he didn't need to have his dad restore the software. Dad is busy enough with two younger sons, the youngest has SMA which means he can't walk because his legs cannot get strong enough to support him.
The plan is to load the HD with the OS and selected software that he can use for school, etc. Then copy the HD on to a bootable DVD that can be used to restore the HD when needed. I don't expect to have more software than a DVD will hold. He will have to keep his data files on some other storage device, something that his dad said he is already doing after having lost some data in the past.
I remember making a bootable CD but have forgot the details. And the OS was 10.2 as I remember. It required having a bootable CD to get the boot OS from to write on the new CD. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Larry

  • I want to make my animation responsive but its not working correctly.

Here is a better example of what the issue is.
    http://re.g-ram.co/1uHfiWu
The animation is suppose to be right below the navigation. Can anyone guide me on what or how I can center it without having it absolute positioned at the top?
Its being written by jquery. one of my clients did the animation. All i am doing is integrating it in the html.

hey, thanks for the reply but that isn't the issue. my issue is that the animation doesn't stay within the div container. I tried what you said via chrome console but that's more of a hack way of doing it. I should be able to contain the animation within the div that its being wrapped with but for some reason it is jumping outside the div container.
Does that make sense? Would be awesome if there was a walkthrough on how the edge animation settings worked. for example the code below. would i need to adjust something below for it to contstrain within the container?

Sorry, I had a different idea of "mosaic"
If you want to create something like a collage or a puzzle iPhoto is not the right application.
Unfortunately you hav to use a seperate application for this. I'm pretty sure you will find a matching App in the App-Store.
