Want to make a USB Win 8.1 backup just in case my Envy laptop model M6-k125DX HD fails

I just purchased my new Envy laptop M6-k125DX which has the recovery on the HD. This laptop doesn't have a DVD or CD and it says I can make a Win 8.1 install USB for the laptop.
My question is has anyone done this before?
What size USB thumb drive is needed. I suspect a 3.0 version.
I have read most the the online manuals but it doesn't say how big it has to be for the OS.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Please see HP PCs - Creating a Recovery Image on Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive (Windows... for instructions on creating a USB Recovery Flash Drive.
1) Use a blank, high-quality USB flash drive no greater than 32GB and one that is NOT branded as Windows 8 compatible.
2) The recovery image creation software allows only one recovery image to be created. If you created a recovery image on other media, you can not create a recovery image on a USB drive.
3) The recovery image creation software requires an uncorrupted recovery partition (FACTORY_IMAGE D.
4) Uncorrupted means that the recovery partition has not been modified or removed.
5) The recovery image creation process takes about 30 minutes.
I have successfully created a half-a-dozen recovery USB Recovery Flash Drives using USB 2.0 32GB Patriot Axle Flash Drives... they work like a champ. It is most likely best to use USB 2.0 Flash Drives that aren't listed as Windows 8 compatible, however many USB 3.0 Flash Drive should also work. You may just have to try a few.

How do I make a re-installable system clone? Just in case!

Hi everyone,
So, I've got my copy of Leopard and am anxious to upgrade my trusty PowerBook, however, after reading some of the issues posted here I am also somewhat apprehensive.
I would like to make a clone of my current system, which is running sweetly on 10.4.10 with a lot of other 3rd party apps that I fear may not be compatible with Leopard. This is the main reason I want to clone the system.
I have a brand new 80GB Firewire drive ready for the event, but as I have never done this before I would greatly appreciate any and all advice on this topic please.
What is the best software to use? I've heard of SilverKeeper and there is DeJaVu with Toast8. Are there anymore I should consider?
Will I be able to use the clone as re-installable disc image to return my system to it's previous state? Would that work through the disc utility's 'restore' function or another process?
Would I be better off to install Leopard onto the external F/W drive and run some software tests first?
Reading all these problems has put me into a minor panic. I was so excited to buy Leopard, but now I am fearful of installing it.

Nope. I made a copy via Carbon Copy Cloner. I have it on my Firewire drive but have no way to get it back onto the boot drive. You can't copy over a running OS and I can't boot from the firewire drive for some reason (Kernal Panic). I don't get it. It is like the chicken or the egg. I am stuck. I do not want eopard anymore and can't get my cloned 10.4.10 back to my G5. It appears I need an image file. When I go that route, it allows me to clone the items on a drive, back to the same drive, but says "by clicking ok, you will delete the files on the drive and then create an image file on that drive". Sorry, but that makes NO SENSE.

i have hp pavillion dv4 series laptop.I have already made its recovery disks,which i need now.But my cd/dvd reader is not working,so i want to make bootable usb of these three disks.Can i do it or is there any other way for me??

had it been obvious, I would not have asked the question. In a number of discussions here, people will often mention details that are not relevant to their goal, which is why I’d asked for clarification.
A Boot Camp partition can only be created in an internal disk, so Boot Camp can be ruled out in pursuit of your goal. (Once created internally, it won’t be bootable if it is subsequently made external.) Short of virtualizing Windows 7 in one of your four bootable OS X partitions, I don’t know the answer for how you can achieve it.

HP Envy Laptop (Win8.1) Can't Create USB Recovery Drive

Hello fellow HP PC users;
I was wondering if anyone with a DVD drive equiped laptop had successfully created a USB Recovery Set?
I just spent the last 2 days trying to do this on my new laptop - to no avail (HP nag messaged me that it was important to copy the D:/ drive recovery partition to a USB or DVD discs) . I'm not big on CD/DVD backups as, in the past, I've experienced unwanted failures when previousl attempting a factory restore, so I wanted to use a USB drive for this backup. The HP utility for recovery disc creation only produced a gold spinning wheel/disc when a USB drive was inserted and this continued for hrs. Several tries with different USBs and ports produced similar non-results.
Today I spent an hour with Roger and Siva of HP Tech Support. I initially gave Roger a list of all of the things I had tried and I think we hit it off, as he was particularly excited about the stuff I knew, that he was unaware of. He promptly agreed that I had done everything possible to resolve the issue and he said he would send me a USB Recovery Set. This had to be authorized by his Supervisor Siva. After a half an hour on hold Siva came on the line to confirm my mailing info and said that he was authorizing the shipping of a set of recovery DVDs and that he would wave the normal $40 charge. When I asked why he wasn't sending me a USB copy, he said that because my laptop came with a DVD drive he was only authorized to mail DVDs. Exhausted, I capitulated and said "O.K. then .... go ahead and make my day and send me the DVDs!" Nontheless, I will go to bed crying for the next few nights because I wasn't able to make/get a USB copy.
If anyone has any other info on this problem I would be interested to here about it.

You are allowed to "make" only one set. You haven't made one yet.
I just created my Recovery USB for Envy 15t- j100 using>> PNY Turbo 3.0 - so it is not limited to 2.0 flash drives.
I first tried with a Sandisk Extreme 3.0 which produced the same thing that you experienced... no matter what I tried. (I actually was just testing it since many had reported not being able to use that model)
I did discover that even with the PNY it would only work if I waited to insert it when Recovery Manager was at the screen where you choose usb or cd/dvd.

This is not difficult and you will not have to download from the app store.
your computer has what is called a recovery partition that came with it.
simply hold cmd+R while you boot up. let go a second after you hear the chime.
you will boot into the recovery partition.
Use disk utlity to format your usb drive and then exit Disk utlity and go to Reinstall Mountain Lion.
it will ask you which disk you want to install ML onto. Choose your new USB drive.

Download it again, don't install again and the file (Lion Installer.app) will be in your applications folder.
It is deleted after installation, that's why it can't be found.

Connect your devices to the computer with the USB cable (one device at a time) and import the photos via iPhoto or Image Capture.
If you have not changed any default settings on your computer, iPhoto will automatically launch when you plug in the device. Then follow the import prompts.

There is no way to get an internet connection on the iPod by the 30-pin doct connector. You can only gt a on internet connection vua wifi except you can ge one by bluetooth if connect to an iPhne that has the tethering data plan.

If the Mac in your signature is what you desire to use 10.5 with, you can't do so, it is too new.
If PowerPC application compatibility is what you desire with that Mac, look at this solution:

10.5 only was distributed by CD and updates to 10.5 from free online downloads. Why do you want 10.5, and what do you desire to put it on? Is the person sending 10.5 using 10.5 for anything? If he is, he can't sell the drive.

I think FileVault is used to encryp internal hard drive but I wanna encrypt an external hard drive with Mac OS Extended Journaled Encrypted which is completely different!

I've been unable to locate an app that will do this. The Photos app that comes with the phone or iPad has extremely limited duration controls. PhotoStream seems to load everything from my phone or iPad not allowing me to just load up a set group of images.
iPhoto for iPad is getting some terrible recent reviews. I tried a couple other free apps but they don't use Airplay.
I can do something like this with iPhoto and my MB Air, but it's kind of ugly to have the computer open in order to connect by Airplay to my Apple TV. I've thought the iPad or iPhone would be a lower profile controller.
Am I out of luck?

Thanks for your help. Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV. I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air. Thanks again.

Want to make my Ipad 4 into a second monitor

I have an iPad 4 and a macbook pro and I want to connect them and make my ipad a second monitor. I know that I have to download an app but I want to make sure that I get the best/right one.
I also saw that I can connect my ipad to my computer and control my computer from my ipad, so if anyone has experience with either of these things let me know!

If you plan on using your iPad as a semi permanent second display when working at your Mac, if you plan to do this for long periods of time, make sure your iPad is plugged into power.
These remote display apps tend to be more of a drain on the iPad's battery. Especially so if the remote display app uses Bluetooth instead of over WiFi.
I like and use an app called Air Display.
For using your iPad as a remote client to run your Mac remotely, there are a few decent apps for thiis, but it depend so what you really want to do.
I wanted remote control of my Mac, locally, so I use a remote app called SplashTop remote.
If you need remote location control of your Mac, also, there are other apps for that like LogMeIn and Team Viewer to name a few.
