Want to move 10.8.1 volume to another disk

I got a faster SATA internal drive for my MacPro and I want to transfer my Mountain Lion volume to it.   Sounds easy, right?
Well, the original volume is protected by File Vault 2 - and that seems to utterly prevent me from using Disk Utility to "Restore" from the original drive onto the new one - which would have been my preferred method.
I always get one of 2 different errors - either "Cannot Verify Source" or "Resource is Busy".    It doesn't matter if I first "Unlock" the source volume or not.
SO - I tried restoring a Time Machine backup onto the new drive.    That worked (though it took over 7 hours) but to my chagrin - it didn't create the recovery partitions for Mountain Lion.  ARGH!!
This not only makes recovery mode unavailable, it also prevents my enabling File Vault on the new drive.    Is there any way to establish those partitions without wiping out the drive??
What I hope to avoid at all cost is any scenario where I have to do another 7-hour Time Machine recovery.
For bonus points: I'd also like to make the existing Time Machine history work with the new volume (i.e. convince Time Machine that it isn't necessary to do another 100% backup from the new drive.)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I know there are some issues in Gnome/Nautilus that's being worked upon.
These are outlined in the Readme. For example it's not possible to copy a
folder from Server A to Server B, then delete the folder form Server A.
Finally later on copy the folder back to Server A from Server B.
Also Gnome is leaking file handles, which could be the cause for the
    problem we're getting here.
I'll ask my contact at Novell about this and have him enter it in as a bug

For a workaround you already have a good alternative of using mv in a

I want to move ebooks from one computer to another.  Both have Digital Editions installed.  Older one 2.0 ver has books installed.  Newer one has ver 3.0 no books installed.  Both are authorized with the same user id.  Do I have to upload from older machine to cloud first?  How do I do that?  Do I have to manually transfer files?  How do I do that?  Can I get pointed to online directions someplace?

Figured it out.  Copy files to new computer and add to library from digital additions.  duh.  Why was it some much easier to figure out answer once I posted the question?

    Where are you looking?
    Here:

Keep in mind that your Library folder is hidden by default in Mountain Lion.
To find it, hold down the option key and choose the Go menu in the Finder.

Don't do that - flag the photo and go to the target event and use the add flagged photo to selected event command to move it intact within iPhoto

  • Want to move 10.000 linked files to another HD!???

    Hi,
i want to move my photos from an external HD to the internal imac HD. The photos are linked to the iPhoto library. After a simple drag an drop iPhoto is not able to find the Original file. Only one after another, and this is a boring job for 10.000 files =(
Is there any way or tool to change the HD?
    Thank You for Help,
    Thomas

By "linked" I guess you mean Referenced - that is the file were imported without copying to the iPhoto Library, right?
When you do this iPhoto creates an alias to the location of the Original File. However, while an alas will track a file as it moves around a volume, once you have the file and the library on separate volumes you are asking for trouble. Aliases will not survive moving across volumes.
It's the main reason I would never recommend using iPhoto in Referenced Mode. Apps like Aperture have commands to re-attach and move referenced files. They are also more expensive.
You can try use an app like [FileBuddy|http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy> to resolve the aliases. If that fails then I'm afraid doing each one individually is the only way...

  • Extending an LVM Logical Volume to Another Disk

I have read the article in the wiki and also this guide since my drives are encrypted. I have already set up arch on one drive with LVM on top of an encrypted volume (following the linked guide strictly with exceptions on the cipher and the partitioning). So far everything works very well but I'm only halfway where I want to end up. Additional to the one HDD I want to use two more, all of them encrypted (no problem here) and one logical volume spread across all three drives (problem be here).
So, to clarify, on /dev/sda I have two partitions, /boot (unencrypted, 130 MB) and /dev/sda2 (encrypted, ~2TB) on which the LVM volumes are.
/dev/sda2 is added to vgroup and has several logical volumes of which /home is the largest.
On the other hand I have /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc. Both should only contain one encrypted partition and extend /home. That is why I chose LVM in the first place.
I started with /dev/sdc since all the data on it has been backed up already. The entire drive is now one big encrypted partition called /dev/sdc1. I mounted it with sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdc1 lvm. And here I am stuck.
    1) First of all I'm not entirely clear on the last part "lvm" of that command, I initially thought it would be the name this partition would be mounted under but in the guide I took this from it is not explained and I want to be extra careful here because I have a lot of data on /dev/sda2 that is not backed up and I don't want to accidentally erase the logical volumes I already have.
    2) I guess the next part would be creating a physical volume on the mounted partition via lvm pvcreate /dev/mapper/lvm but again I want to be extra clear on this, I really do not want to temper with the volumes I already have unless I know exactly what effects it will have. If I would mount the encrypted partition with sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdc1 aaa would I then have to create the physical volume with lvm pvcreate /dev/mapper/aaa? Because I already used lvm when I created all the volumes on the first drive (sda) and I don't know if they are still mounted under the same name (after many reboots and setting up the arch which I am currently using) in which case I might be in danger of overwriting something?
    3) From what I have read so far I could extend /home now with lvextend -l +100%FREE vgroup/home, is that correct? After that I would only have to extend the file system (ext4) on /home and it would be done?
I hope it is clear what I am trying to do, if not please do ask. Thanks in advance for reading all of this.

Turns out this is not quite over yet. After successfully dealing with LVM I was about to reboot when something occurred to me: The second HDD (sdc1) will not be decrypted at boot and I have no idea what would happen if LVM tries to mount a volume that is spread across two disks of which one is not available.
So I searched for some time and everything I could find was this thread. Well, he is talking about altering the encrypt hook and generate a new initramfs to be able to enter more than one cryptdevice in grub. I have never dealt with hooks before and never got my hands on bash script like this. Now my options are pretty weak: I could do what he describes although I have no idea how it works or I could revert all the changes to LVM. Naturally I chose option number one, parsed the hook, edited the menu.lst, rebooted and "Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda2".
So yeah it's my fault for trying something I have no clue about.
I tried to access the volumes from the live cd, but even though I decrypted the drives and loaded up lvm with vgchange -a -y I can not access the logical volumes. I naively tried to access the files such as menu.lst but I can't get there. Probably because I just lack the knowledge how to do that. But even if I would be able to access the files, could I build the hooks of my system from within the live cd?

  • Want to move datafiles, controlfiles, redolog on new ASM Disks (11gR2 RAC)

    Hi Guys,
Setup: Two Node 11gR2 (11.2.0.1) RAC on RHEL 5.4
Existing disks are from Old SAN & New Disks are from New SAN.
Can I move all datafiles (+DATA), controlfiles (+CTRL), redolog (+REDO) on new ASM Disks by adding disks in is same Diskgroup & dropping older disks from existing Diskgroup taking advantage of ASM Re-balancing Feature.
    1) add required disks in the DATA Diskgroups,
    ALTER DISKGROUP DATA ADD DISK
    '/dev/oracleasm/disks/NEWDATA3' NAME NEWDATA_0003,
    '/dev/oracleasm/disks/NEWDATA4' NAME NEWDATA_0004,
    '/dev/oracleasm/disks/NEWDATA5' NAME NEWDATA_0005
    REBALANCE POWER 11;
    Check rebalance status from v$ASM_OPERATION.
    2) When rebalance completes, drop the old disks.
    ALTER DISKGROUP DATA DROP DISK
    NEWDATA_0000,
    NEWDATA_0001
    REBALANCE POWER 11;
    Check rebalance status from v$ASM_OPERATION.
    3) Do it same for Redo log groups & Controlfile Diskgroups.
I hope, I could do this Activity, even if database is Up. is there possibility of Database block Corruption ??? (or is it necessary to perform above steps when database is down)
Would be appreciated, your quick responses on the same.
    It's an urgent requirement. Thanks.

    Hi Manish,
Yes you can do that by adding new disk to existing diskgroup and delete old diskgroup. The good thing is this can be done online however you need to make sure the rebalance power is meet your business time, higher rebalance power is faster to rebalance to complete however it also will consume more resources

  • How can I  move the 'Itune music file' to another disk

    Hello
I am using ITUNE in a Winfow XP environnement. I am running out of space on my C disk. How can I move my ITUNE music file
    C:\Documents and Settings\Yves\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
to another bigger partition on the same computer?
Sorry if that question as been answered before I may have missed it.
    Thanks Yves.

Sorry, there is no way to move that file out of the Profile folder, or specify a different location for it, built into Firefox.
One extension that might be able to help you do that is Pike's Bookmark Backup extension. BB allows you to specify which files are backed-up and where those backup files are saved. It also has a backup interval setting, IIRC. <br />

I don't know if it's the same for iTunes, as I don't read that forum too often. You could wait for someone elso to respond here, or search the iTunes forum, or post new ? over there.

  • I want to move all files to an external drive--how?

I'm working on a Mac Pro. Using iMovie 9, I've been loading video from 10 years to archive and edit it all. I'm quickly using up remaining space on my primary hard drive (1 TB). I have a second drive (also 1 TB) with plenty of room. Can I move all the "Event" files (haven't started processing them yet) to this second drive? There doesn't seem to be any way to do this. Basically, I just want to move the whole iMovie operation to another drive and work from there. I've read some posts on this but the instructions don't make sense to me and I can't get anywhere.

    Here is the main post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
The safest way is to follow the instructions in the post and move Events from within iMovie.
In your case, if you have not started ANY projects, you can move the events in the Finder and they will still work.
The safest way to do this would be to move a single Event using iMovie. This will create the right Events folder with the right name in the right place. Then drag the rest using the Finder. This will be a little quicker.
Restart iMovie and it should see them all and you are good to go.
Remember that the external drive must be formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled). FAT 32 drives would have to be reformatted before they can be used in iMovie.

  • Is it safe to move /usr/share/doc directory to another partition

    Hi all;
Having / (root) partition full problem on Oracle Linux 5.8.
to be able to get some free space i want to move /usr/share/doc directory to another partition and make soft link to new path.

If it really gives you the space you need... I have never tried it, but I see no reason why it should not work.

  • Where is "Save As"?  (Want to move a project)

iMovie project files are HUGE. I accept that. I wanted to move my project from one disk to another. Somehow, last week, I imported my raw video to my Firewire drive, but the project files stayed in my Movies directory on my system drive.
How do I move my project to another drive?
I corrupted my project trying to hack it (moving the files and editing the location by hand).. my bad. I just didn't see an option to open a project, then save it whereever I want. Didn't the old iMovie have this option?
    Love iMovie 08!

Exactly (..why they don't bundle projects, events, etc in one package that you're free to move around..).
I have my projects on a disk known as "/Volumes/LaCie Disk". I cannot move it -- I tried. There is no option in the File menu or Preferences. When you import a movie you can specify where the Event files go -- that's it -- FOREVER.
You can actually drag the event directories around, just not the .rcproject files (the files that have my painstaken editing data).
Looking in the .rcproject directory there are several files - some binary - some ascii with compressed data in XML format. In both cases you see "/Volumes/LaCie Disk" hard-coded into the file. I tried editing the "/Volumes/LaCie Disk" entry, but, alas it didn't work. If I want to edit my .rcproject a year from now I will have to do it at a location called "/Volumes/LaCie Disk".
Apple, please, please add a Save As option to iMovie 08 -- soon!

A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left me with my icons stuck in the grid on the right side of my desktop. I had the ability to move them and have them stay put in various sectors of the desktop, which I found very useful.  The clean install upgraded the OS to 10.6.8 from 10.5.8.
