Want to move to SAP after 6+ years of experience in a completely different field?

Hi and Good Day to all lovely people on SCN.
I have been following this site for quite a few months now, reason: I am hooked to the wonderful world of SAP.
I still haven't personally experienced it, and currently in dire need of suggestions from your expertise.
After completing my MBA in Finance & Marketing, I started working for a Multi-National Bank in its Back Office Operations.
Been 6+ years and now am planning to also explore and enhance my knowledge in IT field which would be relevant to my
current experience and help amplify the chances of improving my career.
Am confused, and unable to determine which modules should I start with to get the basics of SAP.
Hence request you all show me how to take my first steps and gradually move faster by strengthening my roots.
Request you all to show me a road map, which would help me overcome any hurdles on the way to my destination of
being certified in at least one module.
I support Foreign Exchange operations and have fair (but not in depth) technical knowledge of how two systems are linked together to get the
job done automatically. Since, basically am from Finance, I have good knowledge on different financial products. Hope this would help you to
determine which module in SAP would be well suited for me.
I request every one of you to, please help me out and guide me so that I can make most of it.
Anxiously looking forward to receive responses.
Thank you & Regards
Bilal Ahmed D

Hi Bilal
Honest question here: Why SAP? You appear to have zero exposure or experience, including not knowing what "SAP AG" is yet you are keen to completely change your career? How did you hear about SAP? Sorry, I do not mean to be unkind.
So far you have described your background and asked what module. You've received some recommendation on what module based on a very high level summary you have provided - back-end operations can mean a multitude of work activities.
I have also tried to provide you with an alternative approach to entering SAP. In my recommendation it is not about being hired because you do have or not have SAP skill set. It is about getting a job because you have industry experience and you just happen to now work for a company that uses SAP. Once you start working for the company you then start using SAP as an end user. You get more exposure to the system from that point of view. You may even discover that SAP does your head in (it happens to all of us at some point) and you are no longer interested.
I am not a functional person nor industry qualified so I can't say which module is right for you. But the reality is no-one in SCN is qualified to tell you what pursue. Particularly, when you seem to want to change industry as well - sounds like you are planning to go back to square one whether you intend to or not. If you were to change industry, how would you achieve that? Your approach in changing industry would probably include the same steps as changing product knowledge to SAP: research, hard work, networking, job application, etc and a bit of luck and opportunity presenting itself at the right time for you to capitalise on.
How intensely you should work will also come down your natural abilities and motivation/desire to succeed in my career path.
For education, search SCN for Learning Hub. You can obtain free access to some course material which would include introduction for you to have a look and see what it's all about and what takes your interest.
But please keep in mind (and search other posts here).. a lot of freshers seek training and certification with expectation it will lead to a well-paid job. They then come here and ask why no one hires freshers or why did they spend all this money on certification when experience is sought. You have experience, just a different flavour.

  • Want to move to SAP BW. Suggestion required

Presently I am working in India in the Data Warehousing area as Business Analyst. I have considerable functional experience and very good exposure to Supply Chain. Apart from that I have some exposure to BAAN ERP package.  I would like to move to SAP BW. I have access to SAP BW and want to move to SAP BW. Can any want suggest what kind of role I can fit into?

    Hi,
I think in most of BW Projects only 1 or 2 developers will be alloted to it. So most of the time you have to handle all things.
When comparing BW project with other DW projects, It is very pretty and easy job. If you have functional knowledge in the learning phase of BW ,It is very good.
So try to learn all things like Extraction,Modelling,Reporting, some sort of Sytem maintanance. And I think Work in Each part is dependent on other parts. i.e Modeling and Reporting are mutually dependent to each other.

    bb,
Could you tell me if you have access to a BW system for development or as an end user.
Also I suggest you have a look at BW Projects happening in your company. That would give you an idea.
Also one more thing to do would be to go thru Fu and Fu first ( BW Setp by Step ). SDN please forgive me for recommending this book, it is on an older version but it is the only one in this category. ( Someone has to write a better book ...)
Then get yourself familiar with how DW and BW work , one area where you could fit in would be in Data Modelling and depending on your expertise with Data Modeling you could sell your skills as a BW Data Modeler.
But , the caveat is that getting in head forst as a data modeler is tough , most probably you might have to:
    1. Get into a support project and work your way upwards or..
    2. Get certified and then go into hardcore BW.

P.S I am also a Business Analyst of the DW Practice at my company and now full time into BW.

  • Career in SAP after 42 Years

    Dear Experts,
I'm in a dilemma over entering into domain of SAP at 42 years age.
I'm a BCom Degree holder working in a IT company in Finance Department having 10 years of experience in Finance only.  I am in AP Function.  I am now 42 years planning to change my career to SAP as a Consultant
Is this a right decision at this age.
Can anyone please guide me through the various options available in SAP finance and the career prospects
    Thanks in advance!
    PK

    PK,
In SAP FI probably there is a chance of getting into the role of a consultant; getting a job and flourishing (saying on the basis of your strong domain experience).
But in general, 40+ it is an uphill to start a Functional career, office dynamics, age and ego clashes etc. etc. have made many experienced people leave SAP and return back to domain.
If you desire is strong and will persevere, then by all means go for it.

  • Dynamics NAV/AX Technical Advisory wants to move into SAP

    Hi All,
I have hit 10 years of industry experience in Dynamics NAV support, deployment and implementation and some of Dynamics AX. I am currently a Senior Technical Advisory - designing , deploying and supporting our partner channel across EMEA.
How does someone technical and in deployment business starts getting into SAP technical side?
I would really appreciate some links that can guide me step by step. I cannot afford to pay for £1000 per course but do not mind spending more than that when I have cleared basics on my own. Obviously my current company would not pay me for competitor training
I am based in Reading, UK.
Thank you very much well in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Zeeshan

    Hi,
It is not so easy to learn any ERP when you have not experience. But, if you are technical guy, I suppose to start with some development training.
    Now, some advices:
AX is to hard for learning if you have not any ERP knowledge.
If you are from Europe, try with NAV. If you are from US, try with GP (or NAV).
CRM is not ERP. But, if you want it, you can also try with Dynamics CRM.
I am sure that some course will not help you so much to get a ERP job. Except courses, you have to learn and train it more and more. Some company will employee you only if you have some knowledge, not course (or exam).
You have to know some functional modules, because you can not be only technical guy in ERP software, because ERP is not IT; ERP is software for business processes.
If you need advice where to go on some good course, you must tell me where you living.

  • Logic board failure after 3 years - the experience

My MacBook Pro was bought in September 2010. It has been running smoothly until January 2014. Then from 1 day to the next, the MacBook restarted itself randomly 1-2 times / day. Bringing it to the Apple store in Frankfurt, Germany revealed that the Logic Board was broken and needed to be exchanged.
The person at the Genius bar was very friendly and sympathetic. He told me that this should not happen to an Apple product, ie it should have a much longer life time. He mentioned that the logic board problem is very well known to Apple, but usually manifests within the first 2 years, which is why Apple extended its guarantee to 2 years. In my case however, the failure happened later and he would therefore need to consult with the store manager Roland.
To my surprise, I learnt that Roland was neither willing to extend the guarantee period, nor was he even willing to speak with me in person. The genius bar person was quite ashamed about this and excused his boss. He advised that I could either exchange the logic board for ~470 Euro or , recommended, buy an entirely new MacBook Pro for which he'd give me a 10% discount.
Because I needed the laptop urgently for travels to the US with several talks at academic institutions, I reacted quickly and initiated the logic board exchange.
The repair time took twice as long as originally indicated and it is my impression that the repaired laptop is somewhat slower than the original one.
I left a message at Apple feedback, so far without a reaction.

Hi! Does anyone had problems regarding logic board failure on Macbooks Pro 13''?
I don't have the problem, but it's been percolating on another discussion for several years now:

You might think about posting there, too, so others can read about your issue.

  • How can i move to SAP BI

    Hi all,
I am working for 3 years in SAP ABAP. Now i want to move to SAP BI. I would like to know that wether my 3 years of ABAP experience will be wasted if i move to SAP BI. What about my previous ABAP experience.
And how can i move to SAP BI.

Before taking training I would suggest you, go through the SAP library of BI and get an understanding of BI. When you have an rough idea, then go for training and it will be really useful. You will be able to ask lot of questions as you know already little bit otherwise you won't get time to go through the materials during training as it's so fast. Check the links:

  • I have 3 +years of experience in SAP ABAP and BRFplus , want to move to australia from India.

    Hello Experts,
I have around 3.5 years of experience in SAP -ABAP and SAP-BRFplus . I am based out of india and want to move to Australia.I am trained in ABAP OOPs And Webdynpro. Have worked for around 3 years in Infosys Limited and currently working as Senior Business consultant in SAP ABAP in Ntt Data North America.
I am activly looking for moving to Australia.
So kindly let me know how to go for that.
    Regards,
    Khushbu

    Hi Khushbu
If you want to work in Australia you will need to research the different VISA laws etc. Trying to come "onsite" is a challenge. SAP job demand goes through cycles and sometimes it is difficult to find a position. You might want to look at the large consultancies and see if there is an opportunity for onsite work as part of the project (more than likely make sponsorship easier).
The difficult challenge - most times development work is sent offshore (not all places of course). The work kept in Australia is either they cannot outsource it (federal government and so you need to be an Australian citizen) or it will be more senior staff (10+ years experience). It doesn't mean the work isn't available but you might be competing with other established professionals.

  • Need a help / advice & guidance whether to switch on my Career in SAP-PM from core industries after spending my 09 years of experience in Core field that to in Maintenance.

    Hello Adviser /expert,
Need a help / advice & guidance whether to switch on my Career in SAP-PM from core industries after spending my 09 years of experience in Core field that to in Maintenance.
As now i m thinking to do SAP-PM certified course from authorized SAP partner in India that to Pune.
So any one can suggest authorized SAP partner in India that to Pune.
My introduction (About myself): - I had done my Diploma in Mechanical and had total 09 years of experience in Mechanical Maintenance field that to in different manufacturing company such as Steel, Auto Ancillary & Cotton plant.
Whether its right decision to change my career from Core sector to SAP-PM..??
Is there very good scope in SAP-Pm for me after 09 years of Core Maintenance field..???
    Guide me
    Warm Regard
    Ravin

    Ravindra,
SAP PM is very niche Module, very in demand module, at the same time, being niche, getting into it and getting 1 implementation is also difficult.
your decision of joining SAP authorized training is the best option, as a certified consultant, you have more chances to get a break as fresher and you can continue working on it, else it would waste of your intellectual energy.
you just search sap.com training or email them or chat with them, they will give u the training center details,
but very less training classes are available. Try you will get lucky soon

  • After 2 years want to change depreciation key for a asset

    Hi,
For a particular asset we want to change depreciation key for this asset already we have posted depreciation for 2 years. After 2 years user realizes they are using wrong depreciation key now they want to change depreciation key for a particular asset.  In new financial year till now they have not posted depreciation .I just want to now what is the impact of this changes how we will adjust the value in future because previously they are calculating depreciation  1.63% now they want to calculate depreciation 3.33 % can any one tell me about the future impact of asset.
How we will adjust the value?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Neha

    Hi,
Does your user wants to post the depreciation for closed Fiscal years?
If yes First calculate unplanned depreciation for the difference up to the last closed fiscal year and post in the current year.
Now after posting this then change the depreciation key in the asset master and in the next run the system identifies the difference between posted value with the old Key and teh correct key and adjusts the difference in the current period depreciation run.
If the user don't want to post the values of the previous years, change the key in asset master so that the difference in the depreciation from the start of the fiscal year is adjusted in the current period.
Future impact if the option is second the asset life will be more when compared to the actual life. In first case there is no effect.
Provide Business with these two solutions and they have to choose between the options.
    Reward points if useful.

  • I bought a license for Lr a few years back and installed it on a mac laptop.  I want to move that license to my new iMac and remove it from my old laptop. How?  Thanks!!!

I bought a license for Lr a few years back and installed it on a mac laptop.  I want to move that license to my new iMac and remove it from my old laptop. How?
I downloaded Lr on the new iMac but there does not seem to be a way of "registering" the software to give it functionality.
    Thanks!!!

    Your Lightroom License key is,
    1. Cross platform Mac and or Win.
    2. It is a single user / owner.
    3. You can have two installations active with one in use at any point in time.
    4. There is no deactivate process like other Photoshop products.
    5. You can uninstall / install as many times as you need as long as you keep the spirit of the license.
    6. The license key is specific to the Lightroom version, i.e License key for LR 4 will not work for LR 5.
    7. You can upgrade i.e. purchase from any version of Lightroom 1,2,3,4 to the latest LR 5.
