Want to PREVENT automatic firmware updates & other changes

OJ 8600 Pro.  Wireless network setup.
I want to prevent automatic updates.
There must be a way to stop automatic firmware / software updates.  I've not found it.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."  Especially printers.
People update firmware / software (not just HP) & some things suddenly don't work.
I don't update * anything * until I know what it is.
I just installed some new, non-HP cartridges.  Suddenly, the printer is accessing the internet & "downloading."  It flashed by quickly on the printer display & I couldn't read everything it said .
At the same time, it said something like "... then web printing will also be activated."
I specifically DISabled that, in the EWS, when I 1st  setup the printer.  Don't want web printing, don't need it.
Now, because I replace some carts, it's going to re-enable it for me?  Talk about brass balls.
I cancelled that download / shut printer down.  But sure enough, it had switched my settings & re-enabled web printing.  (I disabled it again).
The next power on, printer resumed some download.  It didn't bother saying what - just showed, "X of Y downloaded" & showed the progress.  I immediately cancelled it again.
If there aren't settings to prevent any automatic FW / software updates, or if it just ignores them, I'll have to bury the printer far under the firewall.
Thanks.

Thanks RnR.
Here's one method of using a router to prevent devices from accessing internet, that should work for many users.
I decided to use my router to block the printer's internet access.  This can quickly & easily be reversed or modified.  It involves 2 basic steps:
1. Assign the printer a static IP address.
2. Use router settings to deny internet access for the static address.
I have a Cisco / Linksys router, but many brands & models have these basic features, that are accessible from the router's EWS (embedded web server), through a web browser.
HP support has detailed instructions on assigning static IP addresses for most printer.
Here is one HP document covering that for my OJ Pro 8600 & some other models:  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03781399/
It may be easier for most users to assign an HP printer a static address, using the printer's EWS rather than the printer display.
Note:  generally, when using a router to assign a static IPa for devices that the router would otherwise be assigning automatically (via 'DHCP'), the static address chosen is outside of the current range of addresses, that the router can use to assign addresses to the devices connected to it.  In many routers, what the current range of addresses it can choose from to assign DHCP addresses is visible under some section / tab of the router EWS.
In my Cisco, the current DHCP range is shown under the Setup -- Basic Setup -- DHCP section:
"IP Address Range:  192.168.2.60 to 192.168.2.109"
So, I chose a static printer address outside that (192.168.2.XXX).
You should write down & save the selected IPa, in case there's any problem getting it from the printer later (shouldn't be, but...).
Assigning the printer a static IPa hasn't affected accessing its EWS (for me).
Once the static IPa is assigned & recognized (by the router), use the router's settings to block that address from internet access.  In my Cisco, it's under "Access Restrictions."  (You may have to power the printer on / off; possibly reboot some computers, for the new static address to be recognized.)  Here's how I did in the Cisco:
Log on to the router EWS (default login name & password is admin/admin.  You should always change router PASSWORD from factory defaults, for security reasons - so your neighbor or kid can't remotely hack into your router).
Go to "Access Restrictions" tab or similar.
Click "edit list of PC's" and put in the "MAC address" of the printer. (found in the printer's network config / settings).
Save the MAC address settings.
Back on the router main Internet Access page, give this internet access policy (rule) a name.
Then click "Deny Access."
Check "Everyday" and "24 hours" for times, to block the IPa continuously.
Save the settings.
Now the router won't allow that address to access the internet - during the times specified, but the device (printer) can still communicate on the local network - all the time.
The same can be done for specific computers.  Like to block kids' computers from internet access on certains days / hours.

  • N8 - Firmware Update & other things

    Hi Guys,
I know the new Firmware is coming this month, but I am wondering when?  I am also wondering if I will get the firmware update immediately as I am on Orange UK.
Does anyone know what kind of improvements the new firmware will have?
Also does anyone know when the new IM For Nokia will be released for Symbian^3?

Hopefully, one of those '50 fixes' includes better optimised wifi settings, where it doesn't drain the battery that fast! Seriously, thats where the problem lies with battery life with me. By using the wifi, the battery can't last. I hope that the next firmware does a better power management job.
Also, leaving your phone running on 3G also kills. But I don't mind going down to GSM (edge) at times.
Argh! I wish Skype didn't take so much battery too! In my last phone (E72), using Wifi and Skype was a very good option to save battery. But with the N8, using WIFI or 3G kills battery.
To be honest, if im embarking on a long journey, no way I would leave my skype running, because I would hate to have a dead battery before finishing the journey. But if I know that I will be passing by power outlets to charge my phone, then hell yeah, skype is back on!
PS: Tron Legacy was such a good film. So glad to see the N8 being used in that film. I was feeling like 'best phone ever' when that part came

  • N81 8gb firmware update - language change?

    Hi Everyone,
I've bought an N81 8gb which has Chinese, English, and Melayu as language set. I'm currently living in China and therefore the Chinese language set is crucial; however, I know that N81 8gb is not officially released in China and therefore, there is no official firmware update from China.
My current device firmware is at V.10.0.053 RM-179. If I use the PC suite's software updater, will I lose the chinese language set on my phone? Has anyone lost their languages after updating?
I'm a bit weary to do try because I updated my girlfriend's bought in China N72 which reverted to the Nokia Europe site but the device software only had French, English, Italian and no Chinese after installing the update.

It's not possible to upgrade offline.
The nokia software updater needs an active broadband internet connection to be able to work.
As an alternative you could get our phone updated at a nokia care point.

  • Linksys Firmware Update Process Change

Linksys is starting to rollout firmware updates to router's that have the "Check for Firmware Update" or "Auto Firmware Update" features in a batch process.

You know with my Galaxy S5 I have auto updates enabled. I like it but as soon as the first bad update occurs it will be turned off.Sure but w/ your Galaxy S5 (assuming a carrier one) you would be surprised at how difficult it is for Samsung to get the carriers to approve that update (LOTS of testing). Additionally, you at least get some sort of release notes. Nothing major. Final item, a Galaxy S5 is a single user device.  A Router supports "multiple single user devices".  So if a router dies from an update, that could impact 10+ Samsung WiFi clients.vs. just 1 phone that dies. To me, "scope of impact" and "release management" factor into these sort of decisions...Real world scenario: Someone is in the middle of NetFlix streaming a movie. If I update the router firmware and interrupt that, I might not live to post on these forums Just imagine what more "productive" situations could arise. For ,my phone, if I update it, no one is impacted but me.

  • How can I prevent automatic software updating iWork apps

I am one of the many users who hates the new iWork apps and have reverted to iWork 9. But I get reminded everytime a new version comes out and I risk updating to the new versions if I do not notice that.
How can I remove these apps so that I never get an automatic update. (I've hidden them from the list of apps but that doesn't help.)

I believe what you are looking for is this...
System Preferences---> App Store---> uncheck the "Automatically check for updates"
Or any one of those you wish to not have.
I don't know how it happened. But I have both iWork '09 as well as the latest. I just opened Numbers for '09 for the first time for this thread. It told me of a brand new update, blah blah blah. So I selected the box not to tell me again. I can quit the program and open it back up, of course it won't tell me about the new update. I also have both versions of Numbers opened right now.
It would appear that my Mac created a folder labeled "iWork '09" with Keynote, Numbers and Pages in it. All of which are from '09
I also have the "Automatically check for updates" marked in System Preferences. I don't get any notifications either. So maybe you could keep this marked, download and install the newer version and still have both on your Mac.

  • HT1218 i have a windows 8 computer that is not connecting with my time capsule wifi. my other macs and windows 7 systems do connect. is this a firmware update glitch? any suggestions?

I have a windows 8 computer that is connecting poorly via wifi and my Apple time capsule to the internet. My IMac an another windows 7 based computer are connecting fine. This started 6 days ago. And, the windows 8 machine connects well via a hard Cat-5 connection to the time capsule (I'm using that now) and worked well on a wireless netgrear system over the weekend.
I'm thinking an automatic firmware update may have caused this or perhaps i need the time capsule to use something other than a default address. Those are just guesses, but I could sure use some help. Thank you.

It is hard to figure where the issue is..
Certainly if windows updated the wireless driver that can mess things up no end..
    What update happened 6days ago?
What TC do you have.. ?? If it is flat one and you updated to 7.6.4 do a factory reset and reconfigure.
If that doesn't work roll the firmware back to 7.6.1 or even 7.5.2 as these are generally superior to windows.
There is no update for TC gen5 yet.

  • IMovie Preview Not Working since latest Firmware Update (11/14/2006)

I was working on an iMovie project without incident until an automatic Firmware update was completed. Since the update, the editing preview function of iMovie is a black screen. The movie plays, but when you attempt to edit the Ken Burns effects, etc ... the preview screen is black so you are unable to edit a viewable screen. Strange ... anyone else - post firmware update issues on the MacBook Pro?

    (Quoting Karl Petersen here:)
There's a bug in iMovie 6 that makes it impossible to re-edit (Update) photo clips previously imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON. The source photo, normally stored in the Media folder of the project, is (inappropriately) discarded when you empty the iMovie trash. The clips Update as black clips and the preview is usually black too, if I recall.
The workaround is to 1) drag the photo from the iMovie trash to the iMovie Clips pane; or 2) never empty the iMovie trash.

  • Discount is being updated when changing unit price in SO after upgrade

    Hi there,
Customer recently upgraded to version 8.8 from 2005.
They encountered a few transactions where discount is automatically being updated when changing unit price in SO.
Customer created SO by duplicating existing SO. Then change the Unit Price in the new SO.
For one item, the price after discount does not get updated correctly. Instead,  system seems to have automatically created the discount.
So far, I can't reproduce this issue yet.
Is this a bug? Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Yadana

    Thanks for the replies.
I have checked and there is no discount setup for the Price List or BP.
The Price List has been set to the correct one as well.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,

  • Help! Stuck in firmware update for new macbook pro

Help! Today software update asked if I wanted to do the firmware update for my 1 month old macbook pro.  It did warn there would be a grey screen and not to adjust the power, but 3 hours later I am still staring at a grey screen.  What should I do?

Thanks for the links.  I followed the instructions to the letter for the firmware upgrade - it was connected to ac power and stayed that way the whole time.
    I've got 2 questions -
    1.  I've got a grey screen - The first link  says "In the unlikely case that your computer displays a black screen after starting up, you can restore your computer's firmware back to factory condition. Follow the directions to restore your firmware."  Is this still me?
    2.  If I restore the firmware to factory settings, do I lose my data?
    thanks,

  • N91 firmware update & Live 8 Videos

    Hi,
I want to preform a firmware update on my N91, but I am worried that I might not be able to play the Live 8 videos that came with the phone if I do so.
I have backed up the memory (but not the hard disk) using PC suite, and copied the .dcf files from the hard disk to the PC. Is this enough to ensure I keep them, or are they stored somewhere else? Will I lose them when doing a firmware update?
    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi
Yup. 2.10 seems to be now rolling out (it will probably take about 2 weeks to get to all countries and operators like 2.00 did).
I bet this resolves the issue with some 3rd party applications not running, sms slow down etc
I loaded it and actually bought the BestTaskman (because so many people talked about it) and it works (it a good app too)

  • Firmware Update for Camileo H10 went wrong

    Hi,
I got a Camileo H10 Camera and wanted to do the firmware Update, but something went wrong, I can't say, what exactly.
But now the Camera doesn't even start up anymore. The only thing that I can see is the small red light in front. But the monitor wont start up... Is there anything I can do, like a reset or something? Or is it now ready for the garbage? Would be a pity...

    Hi,
Im not a Camileo H10 owner but have you tried to remove the battery? Remove it and then wait one hour. Now connect the battery again and try it. Maybe it works.
If not I would go to the nearest authorized service provider. The technicians can check the camera and repair it.
    Good luck!

  • Soft/Firmware Update for N95

I think I have searched all the FAQ but don't see an answer.
I have an unlocked N95. I am in Canada. I plan to take the device to Europe next week. I want the latest soft/firmware updates before I install anything [maps, dictionary, metro maps, virus software]. But the updater which I have installed on my PC says it wants a SIM card in the phone to do the update. Can I get around this? I don't want to get some sort of phone plan here when I'll be gone in a week.
Also, one set of instructions says plug the phone into the charger while you update and the other says just be sure the battery is fully charged. Does it matter?

    No, SIM card is required.
It's better to plug it into the charger during updating. All it takes is a faulty indicator and you risk bricking your phone. The update process drains the battery like you've never seen before.
    Hope it helps.

  • UMMMM Firmware update to 2.10.03??

Well I have?a xbox 360 and i wanted to download the firmware update so I can stream music from my 30gb zen extra. I have read really nothing but troubles but all some time ago. I was curious if anyone has seen any updates, or even had possiti've experiences with the update? Thanks a tun!

I realize this is an old message but I just bought a refurbished 40GB Zen Xtra. Your post helped me to understand that there truly is a problem with the new firmware interface because it limits the modes of access to the music that were there prior to the update. However, you said this was not a flaw. When we're talking about 30GB to 60GB units, we're talking about a whole lot of genres, artists, albums and tracks. If the access to these tracks is made cumbersome and limited by a firmware "upgrade" then I would have to say the firmware has a major flaw in it's conception and design. It must not have been properly tested before release. They should at least identify it as a beta, let people test it, process the feedback and then make corrections before a final release.
Again, your post was great, I just think there is a flaw with respect to Creative's firmware update.

  • I want the system automatic update my UDFs when the OnHand was changed.

I added two UDFs in table OITW to count the warehouse OnHand by CASES and Bottles. I want the system automatic update my UDFs when the OnHand was changed.  Is there any way I can do it in database level instead in the application (too much places involved).

There is few ways how to do this:
    - triger as David said, but I dont recomend it through SAP policy
    - in stored procedure transaction notification  by adding or updating document update your user field
    - create job in SQL server which in specific interval recalculate the changes of onhand and update your user defined field
    - create addon which will be over functiuonalities which may change the onhand value
I think that from SAP is possible only Addon, but the easist way is trigger and if you dont need it just in time but for example every 10 seccond, the better is job which cannot fail the standard SBO transaction (triger may and may be unsafe).
    Hope it helps

  • Recent firmware update prevents Snow Leopard downgrade?

I need Snow Leopard for my work, and will continue to need it for at least a year. Apple online chat was unable to confirm whether refurbs currently in the pipe would ship with SL or Lion, regardless of age. They basically indicated that my chances were about 50/50.
After reading user accounts of how to downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard, I went ahead and purchased a refurb February 2011 15" 2.2GHz MacBook Pro from the Apple store. Sure enough, when the machine arrived, it was loaded with Lion.
I ran Software Update to make the OS current, backed it up via Time Machine, and then proceeded with the re-format/SL installation process. However, Snow Leopard would not install using any of the commonly described methods, and the symptoms were consistent with trying to load it onto a post-July 2011 machine.
After a couple of tries, I got a 'phone support agent on the line, who advised that when I ran Software Update, it loaded a recent firmware update that locks the machine down. He was evasive at first, but eventually confirmed that the machine was downgradeable when I received it, but was now effectively a Post-Lion machine, and could no longer be returned to it's as-shipped condition. He indicated that my only option was to return the machine for a refund.
I have a local independent repair facility looking into the situation at the moment, but they are pessimistic.
I was unable to find out when Apple first issued the new firmware load via Software Update, but I understand that people were still successfully downgrading to Snow Leopard as recently as December, 2011.
Assuming that the information I received from Apple is correct, they have closed the door on further Snow Leopard downgrades, at least on the MacBook Pro. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

Apple is getting a lot of calls from people wanting to downgrade to Snow Leopard for several reasons, like that Lion is terrible and/or they need to run software that hasn't been updated or is avaialble on Lion.
Firmware updates apply to the machine itself, so it if's running Snow Leopard it gets the same firmware updates as a Lion machine.
I'm not ruling out the possibility that a change is preventing you from installing Snow Leopard on a compatible machine, however like to explore the possibility that you've used the wrong disk to do so.
You can't use the 10.6.3 white disk to install Snow Leopard. Early 2011 machines that came with Snow Leopard came with their own disks and hardware drivers that are not present on the 10.6.3 white disks.
Since your Mac is Snow Leopard capable, try calling Apple again and just say you need replacement Snow Leopard disks for your Early 2011 Mac.
If that isn't a option, you migh want to explore the "Procedure" of combining 10.6.3 with the 10.6.8 Combo Update, which when burned to disk, produces a bootable disk to install 10.6
Explore the links and info on this old thread written for the Early 2011-Mid 2011 period
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3264421?start=0&tstart=0
Another option is to get into contact with another Mac user who bought a Early 2011 Snow Leopard Mac of your exact make and model, get a copy of their disk.
