Want to read Panasonic LX3 DNG files

There has been some speculation that the exposure of LX3 raw files is being boosted by as much as one EV during raw development in order to compensate for overstated nominal ISO values. (This is based on sensor-level tests by DxOMark.) I am interested in finding out if this the case.
My reading of the DNG spec is that any exposure boost would be specified with the BaselineExposure tag. However, I have not found software that will let me read tags in .dng files. Is such a reader available?
Thanks,
Jeff

I did the automatic update from within Photoshop to download the new ACR and it wouldn't open LX3 files.
I then downloaded 5.2 from adobe.com and installed manually and it works fine. LX3 files show up in Bridge and open with ACR.
The same thing happened with the Nikon D90 when it was new.
I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.5.
Thanks.

  • Photoshop CS won't read 5.2 DNG files

I recently had a student use the stand alone DNG converter V.5.2 on his Canon 5D Mark II raw files but Photoshop CS won't read the resultant .dng files. Our copy of CS3 reads them ok but he only has CS and neither his version of CS nor ours will read the files. My understanding has been that .dng files can be read by any version of Photoshop that works with Raw files. Is this no longer true? Or was it never true? Thanks.

    Hi Thomas,
Installing 2.4 took care of the problem. Boy, does the CS version of Camera Raw seem crude compared to the full featured version you've given us now. I remember it as being pretty impressive at the time but I sure wouldn't want to have to go back to it. I think I've convinced the student how much he's missing out on by not having CS4 but at least he'll be able to work with his Raw files until he upgrades. Thanks for your help.

If all you're trying to do is move the files from the Windows external to the Mac external, you can simply connect them both to the Mac and drag the files from the Windows drive to the Mac drive. If you want to move the files back and forth between them, you'll need to establish the format of the Windows external. Macs can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT (which can handle files larger than 4GB) formatted drives but can only read NTFS formatted drives without additional software. With the Windows drive connected, you can check its format with Disk Utility.

  • Aperture 3 will not read LX3 .dng files

I was a Lightroom user for the past several years, but have decided to give Aperture a try. I converted files from my Panasonic Lumix LX-3, Canon 5D Mark II, and Canon s90IS to .dng when they were imported into Lightroom. I no longer have the original RAW files.
I have imported these .dng files into Aperture 3. The two sets of Canon files import properly and our easily edited. The .dng files from the Panasonic Lumix LX3 do not import properly. I get the "unsupported image format" message on the thumbnail.
I have installed the latest Apple update that allows for support of the LX3.
This has happened on both my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro.
Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue?
    Thanks,
    Fred

Hi Fred. Saw your post about this on dpreview, too. I'll repost my response here for other Apple folk.
I'm seeing this with DNGs from my G1, too. The problem seems to be that Aperture 3 lacks support for lens corrections in DNG.
It is probably not a problem with Linear DNGs -- though you'd have to check yours. Adobe forced Linear DNGs on G1 and LX3 users for only one version of DNG converter (5.4, if I remember right). After that, they figured out how to do lens correction inside regular raw DNGs -- the kind that Aperture supports.
Except that the lens correction in those DNGs seems to confuse Aperture 3. It's odd because for the G1 and LX-3, Aperture supports those same corrections in the native RW2 format. Let's hope it's a bug that the same corrections don't work in DNG.
In the meantime, there are a couple of options:
    1. Wait for RW2 support. For the GF1, this is your best choice. And save those RW2 files! Extract your original RW2 files from the DNGs or pull them from a backup (you did embed the the RW2, right?). If you've shot with Panasonic micro 4/3 lenses, this is your best option.
    2. If your DNGs were shot with legacy lenses, there is a good work-around. Only native Panasonic (and maybe Olympus) micro 4/3 lenses add the lens metadata. If you don't have that, the only thing keeping Aperture from recognizing your photos is the camera model name embedded in the DNGs. You can use something like exiftool to change it to one that doesn't do lens correction. Here's what I use to get my G1's legacy lens DNGs to work in Aperture 3. (This is not terribly dangerous, as exiftool can just as easily undo this change.)
    exiftool -Model=DMC-L10 blah.dng
    3. If your DNGs do have lens correction (as they must with the LX3) you could use a tool like DNGSanitize http://punainenkala.livejournal.com/588.html, which purports to strip the lens correction from the DNGs. This is a last-resort sort of thing to do, you will lose that lens correction data. You would probably also have to change the camera model name, as in option 2 (try DMC-FZ50 for the LX3). Keep backups. And, really, don't do this -- wait until the next release of Aperture when we'll find out if Apple intends to fix DNG support.
Whatever you do, test this with your DNGs -- especially if you're trying option 2 or (especially) 3. Just because option 2 works for me, that doesn't mean it will for you. And I've not had to try option 3. And pray you don't have linear DNGs, as only Adobe can help you then.
I can't believe that Apple would mess up DNG support this badly on purpose. In the meantime, please file a bug report to let Apple know that losing DNG support for these cameras is a big deal. You can do this from inside Aperture itself. Choose Aperture > Provide Aperture Feedback from the menu.
Here are the gory details, with links to helpful resources -- http://elstudio.us/notes-on-aperture-3-and-panasonic-gf1-rw2-and
Good luck! And let us know how it works out.

  • Panasonic LX3 DNG unsupported format

    Hi
I was under the impression that DNGs were supported in Aperture even if Apple had not updated their software for any new cameras.
Adobe released the DNG converter which supports the LX3, however the converted files are not recognized by Aperture.
Is there a preference or something i need to change to show the files as supported
    Thanks

**With the release of Camera Raw 5.2 (and upcoming Lightroom 2.2 release) there is an important exception in our DNG file handling for the Panasonic DMC LX3, Panasonic DMC FX150, Panasonic DMC FZ28, Panasonic DMC-G1 and Leica D-LUX 4. For those choosing to convert these native, proprietary files to the DNG file format, a linear DNG format is the only conversion option available at this time. A linear DNG file has gone through a demosaic process that converts a single mosaic layer of red, green and blue channel information into three distinct layers, one for each channel. The resulting linear DNG file is approximately three times the size of a mosaic DNG file or the original proprietary file format.
This exception is a temporary solution to ensure that *Panasonic and Leica's intended image rendering from their proprietary raw file format is applied to an image* when converted DNG files are viewed in third party software titles. The same image rendering process is applied automatically in Camera Raw 5.2 and in Lightroon 2.2 when viewing the original proprietary raw file format.**

  • Panasonic LX3 Raw files in 1:1 aspect rtio

The new firmware for the Panasonic LX3 allows the selection of a 1:1 aspect ratio (Square) for both Raw (RW2) and JPEG files.  My Lightroom 2.5 will load the JPEG files, but  reports an error when I try to load the Raw files.  I am requesting that the next update be modified to allow processing to RAW (RW2) files taken in the 1:1 aspect ratio.   Thanks.

  • Help! Want to read from a xl file and get an output voltage value!!!

    Hello..
I`m a beginner, so please help..
My program should output an voltage value that is read from an xl-file with one collum. The most important is that each values in the xl graph should be read per iteration. So that the file is read over time. I want to use this xl file to controll the output signal over time.
Can anyone show me how this VI would look like, and what would the xl file look like??

The easiest way to do this is to save your Excel file as a comma or tab separated text file and not the native Excel format. Then you can use Read From Spreadsheet File (on the File I/O palette). Using this, you can read the file all at once and then just have a 1D array that you can wire to a while or for loop so that with each iteration of the loop, you get one element in the array. A for loop automatically indexes an input array. Reading the file all at once will be more effecient that reading the file line by line.

  • I want to read a Matlab MAT file into labview.

I do not have Matlab.  I have a series of *.mat files that are created by another program that I want to read into LabVIEW.  The *.mat files should contain a very long 2 dimensional array of complex numbers, with only 2 columns.  I am hoping that the *.mat format is straight forward.  I need to read this into a LabVIEW array to manipulate it.
Has this been done?  I've found several routines that allow you to save data from LabVIEW into a *.mat file so that Matlab can read it, but I have not seen anything that goes in my direction.  Any help is appreciated.
    Mike

Oh, yeah, that certainly makes a big difference.
You're even luckier that I was still bored, so I whipped something together.
    See attached.
    Couple of things:
    (1) I couldn't test it for all data types so the "Parse Data" VI may need to be tweaked for some of the data types.
    (2) Your file contained multiple variables and the one matrix of complex values was a 1D array so you may need to insert a "Transpose 2D Array" function where the bundle function is for your 2D array.
    (3) A couple of the variables were character arrays but Matlab stores the individual characters as floating point numbers between 0 and 255 representing ASCII-encoded characters. These are the "XUnit" and "YUnit" arrays.
For your reference, the MAT file format is at http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk/help/pdf_doc/matlab/matfile_format.pdf
Oh, I think I may have left breakpoints in when I saved the VI. Sorry about that. You should remove them when you run the VI so they don't become annoying.

  • Support for Panasonic LX3 RAW files in Lightroom  (Windows Vista)

I have just bought a Panasonic DMC LX3 and have upgraded to CS4 on my desktop machine and downloaded ACR 5.2 to support the Panasonic RAW files. I run Lightroom 2.1 on my laptop and Lightroom is unable to support these RAW files as yet. Will Lightroom be supporting the LX3, if so when and how will this support be provided? Will it be a RAW update (4.6 to 5.2, or whatever) or will I need a new version/release of Lightroom?
    Thank you, John Cross

  • Panasonic LX3 RW2 files

Does anyone know why Lightroom does not have the option to process RW2 raw files without distortion correction? For now, when I want the 'true' uncorrected raw file I need to use a different raw converter (for me it is GIMP), but that is a bit of a pain. Thanks.

    >Does anyone know why Lightroom does not have the option to process RW2 raw files without distortion correction?
Because Pana required Adobe to add it before they would allow Adobe to support their RAW files. They don't want you to see that the lens distorts quite a bit and has a lot of CA and fringing.

  • How to import multiple DNG files into Premiere

I want to import multiple raw DNG files from a 2.5K blackmagic camera. Each clip is recorded in a separate folder:
I can import each clip separately by selecting its folder and clicking on a DNG file, but -for obvious practical reasons- I would like to import ALL clips at once. However, when I try to do so, Premiere does not import the clips. Instead, it imports each folder, and within them there is not one single clip, but as many clips as DNG files compounded that particular clip. In other words, if the clip had ONE HUNDRED DNG files, Premiere imports that clip ONE HUNDRED times, not just once:
In this image, each file contains the ENTIRE clip, not just a DNG file. Is there a workaround for this? Otherwise, DNG files must be imported one by one, which of course makes the workflow much more difficult.

Jim, when selecting the blackmagic2 level, the only available option is File Directory:
This doesn't happen with RED files, where you can choose between File Directory and RED from the first level. Unlike blackmagic's DNG clips, RED files can be imported all at once, so maybe that's the whole problem:
And yes, Source Settings are available for RED files, whereas they are not for DNG (only basic information, not raw manipulation):
