Want to record live instruments drums guitars etc

hi all
I am a new user too LE8 and although i love the program and the loops etc, i still yearn for the abilty to play my drums, bass and guitar. If you could point me in the way of a good interface id appreaciate it all advice is welcome
Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Drums could be a problem because you will need at least 4 mics.
So you will need an audio interface with at least 4 mic pre:
MOTU Traveler and 8pre
Presonus FirePod (you can find this one at a very discounted price 'cause is out of stock) and Firestudio
Apogee Ensemble
Focusrite Sapphire
and so on....

  • Lenovo g580 do I need to buy an external audio interface to record live instruments and voice ?

Hello,  If anyone could help me please ?, I am wondering do I need to buy an external audio interface to record live instruments and voice onto my lenovo g580.?
My friends have said that good laptops have audio interface's built in... but I cannot see how this could work as I am trying to build a home recording studio. Do they mean that I just need to have a mixing desk ? As the audio interface is already in my laptop, ?
Another question I have is... I have bought a microphone to record with a studio mic. But when I plug it into the headphone socket, it works as a speaker and not as a microphone. Please can you tell me how do I make it work as a microphone, and record on ableton. Thanks. I live alone with two cats so I'd really appreciate some help !
Thank you very much, best wishes.

I'm preparing to expand my studio from a 1 man songwriting system,
to add the capability to record a complete live band, with 16 separate
simultaneous tracks recording. Am I dreaming?
Nope. I've been recording live bands with up to 56 channels at 24 bit 48kHz for three years now.
    1) Does my computer have enough native power to handle such a task?
Yes. The actual recording uses the hard drive buss, so you need to make sure you have fast drives and a dedicated FW or SATA buss for them.
    2) Is there an audio interface device that could help shoulder some of
    the cpu load?
No. CPU is used only for routing audio, effects, etc. An audio interface is used to route the audio in and out of the computer, and as such does not process effects at all.
    3) is it possible to use my multiple, fast internal drives to help?
Yes. Although with Logic Pro you can use only one drive at a time for recording. HOWEVER, I have been able to use SATA drives to record up to 56 tracks AT ONCE. So there is plenty of power there.
    4) If not 16, what's the highest realistic track count I can hope for?
Again, I have done 56 tracks. 16 is a walk in the park in comparison to 56. I would recommend you invest in Apogee AD16X and DA16X, since in one interface you get ALL 16 inputs, and the other gives you the 16 outputs to go to, say, a mixer. And the sound quality is very very very good.
    thanks in advance
    You're welcome.

I dont believe you can do that directly. You would need to record the audio separately and then import

  • Help I want to record live to Garage Band

HI; I know this may have been dealt with before but I am a novice and new to it all. I want to record my blues band to Garage Band. The quality of the inbuilt mike is not that good; should I use a usb condenser mike or a mixer in preference??. It has to be simple because I find a lot of the recording technology very confusing. Would really appreciate some input; thanks

It all depends on your expectations. A USB condenser mic is a good way to start. If you want better quality, you'd want to use several mics running through a mixer. If you want to be able to mix after recording, you should look into an audio interface with several channels that will allow you to do a multitrack recording in GB.
Another idea: are you using a PA system? Then feeding the audio from the mixing console might be a good idea, maybe with an additional track capturing the live audio and the audience reaction with an extra mic.
Possibilities are plenty and not so confusing when you think them through ...

  • Recording live Instrument

I'm trying to record a live instrument just using the built-in Microphone. It can see that the sounds are being captured but when I play it back I can't hear the sounds. How do I get it to play back?

You bought the program, read the manual to learn what you're doing.

  • I want to record live stereo audio (using Mobile In)

with the new 30-pin connectors for iPad and iPhone making it possible to record stereo audio (like Line6 Mobile In), I'd like to record in stereo to iMovie on my iPhone4.
Does iMovie use Core Audio? If so, then this would be a great feature to add if it isn't there already. I haven't found a way to record stereo digital audio into any camera/movie app yet...
    thanks

  • Live Instrument Recordings

Curious about Logic's recording of Live intruments recordings (of course great hardware will make a diff)Does anyone have recordings made with mainly live intruments using Logic Pro...less software instruments....I am a singer /songwriter about to get Logic pro....currently using protools but would appreciate feedback as I do manly live guitar, drums, bass & vocals........

I've done loads of recordings using Logic & live instruments. Works and sounds great. As you rightly said, good front end hardware is what makes it but the software can handle it superbly.
I also use a lot of virtual instruments, but the fact that recording live instruments is so well handled, makes it great for songwirters like you and me!

  • Live Instruments

Hi, I'm new to logic, having been using a digital multitrack up until now. I'm getting a new iMac and logic express 8 and was wondering what I need to buy to record live instruments with logic, do I need a break out box or somethin similar and does anyone have any recommendations?

    Hi,
consider buying an Audio Interface, maybe USB, since Apple tends to build new hardware without Firewire...
Depending on the number of simultaneous intruments you want to record, select the right number of inputs. Most Audio Interfaces come with at least 2 Inputs (=Stereo).
Look for an Audio Interface which has XLR Input for Microphone recording and good preamps. Also buy a good microphone, i would recommend a Shure SM 57 to start with.
There is a vast amount of good Audio Interfaces - better go to your local store and ask someone who really cares about your needs and not about making money...
M-Audio Fast Track Pro maybe a good one. Also look for the Line6 Products if you need Guitar-specific stuff. Tascam is priceworthy, Presonus is okay. See what you like and what fits your needs.
Some of them have an integrated hardware compressor which might be a good extra, like the EDIROL UA-25 EX. If you want to get a firewire device, look for Apogee. Or maybe the Tascam Fireone, which has some basic Control Surface features (Jogwheel / some transport buttons and F-Keys)
And welcome to the world of Logic

I have recorded an audio file (background music). I now want to record an instrument while the background music is playing. How do I do this? Do I need an audio interface?

    Hangtime-
I may have figured it out, but please give me your ideas. I have an older 12 channel Mackie Analog mixer that I hooked up to the computer's in line mic jack. (I came out of the mixer's mono output. I then plugged my guitar amp's output into the channel 1 3 pin input on the mixer. I messed around with the controls and then created a new track in GB and then recorded my harmonica to the new track while track 1 was playing (I have a studio monitor hooked up to the computer's speaker jack). It worked very well, but the Mackie seems to be very sensitive to my mic, so I will need to learn how to set the various controls. This was the first time I have used the Mackie. I had been doing my recording with a TASCAM 4 track cassette recorder. Digital does have many advantages, but I have not used it enough to form accurate opinions yet. If you have suggestions, let me know please. My budget is pretty minimal right now as my youngest is attending a private college!!!!!!!!!!

  • Recording live TV?

I want to record live TV on a Mac Mini, but I don't know which one to get: Elgato's EyeTV HD or BlackMagic Design's Intensity Shuttle for Thunderbolt? I was hoping to record TV shows broadcast in HD into an "Uncompressed" format, which is a format supported with the Intensity Shuttle. Is "Uncompressed" video quality worth the hard drive space when compared to the Elgato's EyeTV HD's bulit-in hardware H.264 encoder? Also, will I ned to get an SSD or will the Mini's stock HDD be more than enough to record "Uncompressed" HD shows?

    Pikachu10 wrote:
But, I take it that I won't need to upgrade from the HDD to an SSD, not because of the read and write speeds, but rather the amount of storage space is more important than the read and write speeds of either the HDD vs. SSD?
If you take the numbers above, even at a 16 bit pixel, you need a transfer
rate of ~100 megabytes/second.  No sinlge HDD would be able to achieve
that.  If there are any, it would not meet it by much.
Actually, to acheive this rate of throughput (or greater), most studio
type environments use several hard drives configured RAID0.
Bottom line, If you are using a standard TV that you get in any store
and not a studio grade monitor, you will not see any difference between
"uncompressed" video vs. a Bluray HD level of compression.  Besides,
anything you are getting via cable, satellite, or over the air, has already
been compressed, so in my opinion, recording as uncompressed video
    would really seem pointless.

  • Need help recording live drums on seperate tracks.

I used to be a professional recording engineer, and as such took pride in knowing my way around a console. But with GB I am stumped.
I need to record a live drummer, and subsequently place each drum on a seperate "track" as when recording analog.
Being totally new to hard disc recording, means learning all over again. Drums are set & miced, what do I need to make this happen (or is it even possible in GB)?
Watched the seminar for Logic, and sure enough there was a drum kit properly recorded on individual tracks, but they gave no detailed explination of how that was done.
Thanks for all help. I'm retired now, and looking for something to fill my time.

Basically you select the channels for each track in
the DAW. In this case GB.
At the bottom of the 'track info' window on your real
instrument (mic) tracks use the 'input' pulldown menu
to assign channels for each mic for each track you
    wish to record on.
In case you are not familiar enough with GB.
If the track info window is not open. You can open it
by double clicking on the track, or under 'Track'
    menu use: Show Track Info.
    Or keystroke: 'Command I'.
The available channels will be available and show in
    the input pulldown menu.
So basically you will want an interface with the
    right I/0.
Depending on what you may have been used to in the
    past for analog quality.
You may wish to take some time to research what's
available for the right amount of I/O with good pre's
and conversion. There is definitely a line of
demarcation in the quality of analog circuits and
    digital converters and clock.
It may or may not matter to you, I don't know but
judging from your past and post maybe worth a
mention. However, I don't know to what standards you
    wish to work in.
Standards such as Alan Parsons, Geoff Emerick, and Jeff Lynne.
Also if you want to use outboard analog while
tracking with an interface you may want to have
    insert I/O available.
And of course if you are wanting to use bussing
sends, complete editing, etc. within your DAW you
will want start looking at other DAW's like Logic or
    PT or DP, etc.
Thanks, I want to get started with GB, and have some basic tracks laid & get Logic in a couple of months. Got to have bussing send/recieve for fx on SN, EQing the kit, compression, etc.

Who do you think I am? Santa Claus?
What you need is not a mixer, but an audio interface with at least 4 mic inputs. There is a lot of choice there, but you should indicate a budget. You can go from, say, € 300 to € thousands, if you want.
    Roland UA 1010
    Focusrite Scarlett 18i8
However, there are other options (like multi-out mixer plus multi in interface, or standalone mic preamps plus interface with 4 inputs, etc). I have little experience using these however so I really cannot say much about which one(s) to get. The two mentioned above both have four mic preamps, but they are by no means the only way to do it.
The cheapest solution I can think of is to get a second 1204USB, plug it in, and in OS X create an Aggregate device (=the two are being merged into 'one virtual' interface with two discrete stereo (= four discrete mono) inputs. Disadvantage: you keep the same (limited) soundquality of the 16 bits convertors. Getting any of the interfaces mentioned earlier will also mean you'll make the significant step up from 16 to 24 bits sound.

  • I want to record my guitar and voice

    First post!
So I've got an acoustic-electric guitar that I've been recording in GarageBand 3 on my MacBook Pro. I record by plugging my guitar into into the audio in line using a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter.
Basically, I want to be able to record both my guitar and my voice at the same time. I already have a Memorex MKA301.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AHSAM/ref=sr111/103-7498225-6408650?%5Fencoding=UTF8
I know that this microphone is kinda cheap so I may want to get a new one of those too.
I'm looking for some info as to what my options are and what everybody would recommend.
I'm aware that there is the M-Audio FastTrack Recording Interface for $99.95 but it seems that it got several bad reviews on the Apple Store.
Then there is also the M-Audio FireWire 410 Audio/MIDI Interface for $399.95 (but I can find it for around $250). I was kinda leaning towards this one, but wanted too hear some opinions first.
Could anyone out there give me some advice on what I should use. All I really need is something that is reasonably priced and will record well. I may want to add other instrument tracks later so that's why I was thinking about the 410.
Any information you could provide me with or any link to helpful sites or products would be greatly appreciated.
(Note: I just became a Mac person about 1 month ago, so I'm still learning)
15" MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1 GB SDRAM

I had a fast tracks usb and it worked great and at $99 it is well worth it. But if you plan on recording vocal and guitar you will need a XLR plug on your mic because it only has two inputs 1/4 and XLR.
Also you don't need a multichannel interface to record multiple tracks, only multiple tracks at the same time.
If your doing all the instruments yourself the fast track or fast track pro may be a good idea for now and then when you need it upgrade to a more expensive firewire interface.
And make sure whatever you get will work with your intel mac.
I just read some of the negative comments about the fast track usb. I don't think some of these people know what there doing. Comments like it only records on the left channel shows user error.

  • I want to have chords played so I can experiment with soloing my guitar. Is there a place to choose chords to be played back in GarageBand? For instance I want a Cmajor 7th chord looped? etc.

I want to have chords played so I can experiment with soloing my guitar. Is there a place to choose chords to be played back in GarageBand? For instance I want a Cmajor 7th chord looped? etc.

    No extra gear required.
    Open up Logic
Select 'software instrument' from the New Tracks box (which opens automatically with a new project)
Select an instrument from the Library (to the right of the Global Tracks field), e.g. piano
Click on the Tools icon, a drop-down list appears
    Select the Pencil tool
Click in the Global Tracks area, next to your piano instrument track. A green box of a few bars will open
Doubleclick on that and then, using the Pencil Tool again, draw your notes for each chord.
Drag and 'draw' a green bar at the top of Global Tracks, and that's your loop.
    Play it and jam along!
