Want to reinstall OS10.4 but lost disc

I'm selling my Mac and wanted to do a complete reinstall of OS10.4 but I've lost the discs. I have the original 10.3 discs. Is there a way I can find out the serial No. for 10.4 from my computer and download the OS from Apple? Any other wipe clean answers welcome.

You can boot from the original Panther 10.3.x installer disc (hold C key on startup with
disc in optical drive bay) and in the Installer's Menu bar at top of the first full window
you should be able to find some options, one of these would be Disk Utility on that disc.
This can do an erase and install; you can also use options in Disk Utility to have it
over-write the hard disk drive at least one pass and it will put zeros over everything.
Then you can choose to format the hard disk drive and then run the Installer's full
installation process. If you do go that far, you may be able to stop the process just
before the computer would require your personal info on the new OSX. That way,
a new owner could personalize it on first-run startup, as a new computer system.
If not, you could make a super user admin account (not of your name, if you don't
put in your own info, you can have an installation a new owner can use, and they
can later change the password or make other daily user accounts and leave the
original Admin you'd create mostly intact. If you do this and make the system ready
to use (and also show the computer is working correctly) you could also go online
and get the Combo 10.3.9 update file and last security updates; and maybe get a
recent browser that can still run well and secure in Panther 10.3.9.
Be sure to use the Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' button and run this between
software installations and updates; to be sure they're working correctly in the system.
If you have any other related Panther questions, there are many answers available.
Also, with Panther installed, a new owner can still update or upgrade to Tiger. Some
of the overpriced Tiger discs out there are only updater discs and won't boot the Mac.
These are sometimes of questionable worth; but they are out there and sometimes
get sold with the impression they are full retail equivalents; but they don't boot and
cannot reinstall a full system (less update Combo, etc) like a retail boot disc can.
Hopefully this helps, in any event...
Good luck & happy computing!

My Illustrator cs6 keeps crashing.  I want to reinstall it but I do not have the serial number anymore What do I do?

    z,
You have registered the serial number in connexion with activating the software, so you should be able to find it here (if you still have the same Adobe ID):
    https://www.adobe.com/account/my-products-services.html
If not, you should be able to get it on either of these pages:

  • After my computer crashed, i reinstalled itunes but lost most of my purchased items. How can i get them back without paying for them again?

so after the annoying reintallment of everything on my computer, there were a bunch of music and app that i have not backed up on an external HD. now that itunes hasx been re-installed, i want those items back, but don't want to sync my iphone for fear of losing everything on the phone (apps, music, etc.) that were purchased. Any suggestions?

Log into your iTunes account on the new comptuer and when you hook up your iPhone there will be a option to reverese sync your iTunes purchased content ONLY, back into iTunes.

  • I recently bought Mac book air and was doing a fresh install of 10.7 and I erased my hard drive and now want to reinstall osx but it keeps telling me that it can't find install information for this machine and to call AppleCare.

Any one have any suggestions?? AppleCare is closed right now

    Hmmmm...
When you say OSX, which version do you want to reinstall?
Was the MacBook Air new when you bought it?  Did it originally come with Lion?  Mountain Lion?
When you say you erased your hard drive, did something go wrong while you were installing Lion?
Were you installing it from a file downloaded from the App Store, or from another source?
When you press and hold "Option" while you boot up, does "Recovery" come up as an option to boot your computer?
If so, you can reinstall Lion from the recovery part of the drive and (hopefully) everything should be fine.
Let me know if you still need a hand with your MacBook and we'll see if we can get you going again.

  • Reinstalled 10.6.8, had to restore old folders. iWork '09, purchased in store to upgrade 08...Would serial number be in my old installation somewhere? Have original box but lost discs, can find a record of purchase to get new serial or old serial

Just figuring this out, posting question for the first time.
Had problems after installing 10.6.8, so resolved to have it partitioned and reinstalled.
Restored the old applications.  Had been using iWork '08 and then upgraded to '09, have been using for years.   Restored libraries, but don't have the '09 discs anymore, just the box from purchase.  I can open the old projects that I made, but can't alter without the serial number.  Is it posible the serial number is buried somewhere and needs to be restored, too?  If I purchased this in store, is there a record, so that I might be able to get a new serial number  from Apple without a charge?
Thanks for help on this one!

Check the box for the serial #.  If you still have your receipt, the store where you made the purchase should have a record.
The serial # may also be buried inside a preference file (plist).

  • Need to reinstall leopard but lost my install disc

hello, i want to reformat my mac book pro but i cant find my leopard install disc. can i download it?

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775 (telephone numbers for other countries - http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html). Provide the serial number and specifications of the Mac.  They may be able to provide a replacement set of discs for a fee.  These discs will be for whatever OS was installed on the computer originally, so if you have an upgraded version you will need to obtain the discs some other way.

  • I have purchased a new laptop & want to reinstall PS11 but can't find the discs, can I download

Is there anyway I can download a previously installed version of PS11 on to my new laptop, I have misplaced the windows install discs, I will be selling my old laptop so all apps will be removed before sale and the drive will be erased

I am not sure what PS11 stands for, but....
You can likely download the trial version of the software thru the site linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.  If you do not have the disks then you hopefully registered the software with Adobe so that you might find the serial number thru your online account.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site or else the download will not work properly.

  • Need to reinstall OSX, but original discs are 3 years old

I have a Powerbook 1.33GHz PowerPC G4 and it's running OS X 10.4.8, but I need to clean it up and pass it on to my daughter. I just got a MacBook intel laptop
It's been so long since I did an install, I can't remember if I use the original discs I got with the Powerbook and then update all the way to 10.4.8 or what?
That seems like a long way around it - did I buy update Panther discs at some point and should I use those? I think I did - can't look right now cuz I'm at the office and not home -
I want to delete me as the user and make it her and just reinstall the system, so someone help me remember what to do!!! I don't want to lose any settings or applications, though - but I do want to wipe out some prefs/library junk for apps that I've taken off.
What's the best way to go?
    17" Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You can create a new user account for your daughter and make that account an admin account. Set up that account for the automatic login, then log into the new account. Now delete your account. Open the Sharing preference and change the Computer name to one of her choosing. When she logs into the account she can then change the password you created for her to one of her choosing.
If you need to preserve certain application support you can back that up before deleting your account, then later restore the information into her account. The following details where most of this is located:

  • I need to download CS5 Design Premium, have serial number but lost disc

Awhile ago I purchased the CS5 Design Premium but have recently moved and can't find the discs. I assume they are either still packed up somewhere or got lost during the move. I got a new computer as well and need to be able to download it. I still have my serial number. Is there a download link you can possibly send me? Thanks.

    Hi White-Whiskers,
You can download CS5 from this location and use your serial no to activate it.

  • Installed FCPX, hate it, now want to reinstall FCS3 but installation fails.

FCP7 works ok, but compressor, color, motion etc won't install. This FCPX debacle keeps getting worse. I just want my old FC back. Apple seems to be closing all the doors to editors.

Just came across this on the Apple help area. If you want to run both programs, you will need to partition your hardrive. So does this mean if you want to switch between programs you have to restart every time?
To create a new partition of your hard disk, follow instructions in Partitioning a disk. The partition must be large enough to contain all the files required by the version of Mac OS X you are installing, the applications you install, and enough room for projects and media.
Note: By default, Final Cut Pro X saves imported and rendered media files in your Movies folder in your home folder (/Users/username/Movies/). Final Cut Pro X Templates (generators, effects, titles, & transitions) and Motion Templates created in Motion 5, are saved to the Movies folder as well.
Install Mac OS X on the new disk partition by inserting the Mac OS X install media and double-clicking the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select the disk partition you just created in step 1.
If you want to control which parts of Mac OS X are installed, click Customize, and then select the parts you want to install.
To start the installation, click Install.
Start up your system from the new startup volume.
From the Apple () menu, choose Software Update. Install the following updates if they appear in the list:
    Mac OS X v10.6.8
    ProKit Update Version 7.0
Purchase Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 from the Mac App Store. The app will begin downloading automatically, and the app icon will be added to your Dock with a progress bar below the app icon. Once the app is done installing, the progress bar below the app icon will go away.
From the Apple () menu, choose Software Update to download ProApps QuickTime codecs and the Final Cut Pro X or Motion supplemental content.
You can now use Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 from this new startup volume. You can also restart on the other startup volume to use Final Cut Studio (2009).

  • Purchased hard copy of CS5 but lost disc. Is there a way to download?

I purchased CS5 about three years ago and installed it on our primary laptop. That laptop was recently stolen. We have replaced the computer, but I can't put my hands on the disc to install it on the new computer. I have my proof of purchase and serial number. Does anyone know if the program can be downloaded or replaced (without having to shell out a bunch of money)?

    There you go. Other downloads

  • New computer, would like to install ipod software to it but lost disc!

So, I was working on an eMachine but recently upgraded to an Hp Pavillions dv7 laptop. I have backed up all my music on external hard drives and I'm ready ro completely discard the eMachine. So, naturally I would like to install my ipod to this. Unfortunately seeing as I have a click wheel classic ipod purchased in 2004 that installation disc seems to be long gone- although I found my manual. So I guess these are my questions:
Is there a way to download that software online since I'm missing the disc- if so how and where?
Is it necessary to have that disc before I hook up the ipod to the new system if itunes is already installed?
    Someone help! Thanks!

Is there a way to download that software online since I'm missing the disc- if so how and where?
Just install the current version of iTunes. The software on that disk is out of date anyway.
Is it necessary to have that disc before I hook up the ipod to the new system if itunes is already installed?
    No.

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

With the kernel panic your Mac is suffering I would suggest that once you get the DVD for your Mac that you boot with the first one in the set in your Mac with the D key depressed. This will start AHT. It will test your hardware. Kernel panic are generally caused by hardware problems.
