Want to restore only specific items after erasing iPhone4

I have read several questions and answers but I have a particular problem I am trying to fix on an iPhone4 and doing an backup, full erase and restore returned the problem to the same state.
To summarize:
What the problem is:
iPhone 4 now with iOS 7.1.1. I was in another country, updated to iOS 7.1.1, and began having problems with Facebook malfunctioning...repeatedly 'crashing' by dropping Facebook back to the 'desktop' as an open task. Re-opening Facebook every time it goes to Notifications and reloads data again...basically unusable.
What I've done:
1) Removed Facebook & Facebook Messenger apps. Reinstalled both, no change. Removed both, reinstalled FB only, no change.
2) I tried a backup (I am not sure if it was iCloud only or also iTunes), erased the phone setting and contents, then restored everything...same problem.
I let the restore process talk me into creating a Restrictions Passcode but apparently I typed it wrong. I figured out how to erase it all again through iCloud.com
3) I concluded something in the backup contains the problem. I installed Facebook only from the app store, no restore of anything else yet. Seems to work fine today.
What I wish to accomplish next:
I want to know if I can restore only the things I want, like contacts, and photos, not a full restore. I'll reload apps one at a time to see if one 'breaks' the FB functionality again.
Thank you
Murray
In addition to a full backup, I exported photos and videos manually to my PC (Windows XP). I haven't figured out a way to transfer files to an iPhone like a flash drive (I'm a PC person - that would be a normal thing for me).
So after all that, the question is: Can I restore only items (contacts, photos, maybe music, in that order of importance) I want after erasing everything?

It is all or nothing in a restore from backup.
Restore as new, then sync your contacts, etc from your computer to your iphone.

  • HT1553 I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.

I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.

Mountain Lion is only available as a download, so there is no DVD to purchase. What you can do is download ML and then stop it from installing as soon as it's on your drive. From there you can make your own bootable ML flash drive.
When your purchase and download Mountain Lion, it will end up in the Applications folder and automatically want to install. Press Command+Q to stop the install and exit. The installer will remain on the hard drive.
    1) Right click on the installer and choose "Show Package Contents".
    2) A folder will open on the desktop. Drill down to Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop.
    3) From here you can either burn a DVD, or copy the contents to a flash drive. Personally, I would strongly suggest using an 8 GB flash drive formatted as Mac OS Extended. You will be able to boot to it in about 30 seconds instead of at least 10 minutes off of a DVD, and it will install MUCH faster. Make sure the flash drive is empty, or you've copied anything off it it you need as it will need to be erased.
    4) Don't just drag and drop the contents you see in the open disk image to the flash drive. It won't boot that way as it will be missing some hidden files. Open Disk Utility. You will something similar to this:
    5) To accomplish the above, highlight either the flash drive's single partition (as I did), or the item at the bottom (Mac OS X Install ESD), which is what you will see with the Lion disk image mounted. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You'll then have the option to select the Restore tab towards the upper right. Drag and drop from the left column into the Source and Destination fields as shown above. If you've already erased the flash drive, you can uncheck the box. Click the Restore button.
You've just made your own bootable Mountain Lion USB Flash drive installer. Once you boot to the flash drive, run Disk Utility first to erase the drive you want Mountain Lion on, then continue with the install.
As far as restoring your iPhone and iTunes libraries, I couldn't tell you. So I wouldn't do any of the above until someone else chimes in with a way to do that after a clean install of ML.

  • I want to restore my phone by connecting my Iphone4 to iTunes in Mac but it doesn't show phone device. What should i do now??????

I have problem when I updated iOS7 yesterday. At first, there was a message popped out in my Iphone 4 said "iOS7 available for u to update, then i clicked "update", then it said "wait while it verifying", after that my phone tuned blank and what i saw was only the "logo of apple". Until now i see only that Apple logo, i can't either switch my phone on or off.
My iTunes in Mac is just updated to version 11.1
I want to restore my phone by connecting my Iphone4 to iTunes in Mac but it doesn't show phone device.
I don't know why it doesnt connect to pc(Mac pro).
    Any solution?

You need to restart the phone in DFU mode and update the software.
To restart the phone in DFU mode press the power and home button simultaneously for like 10 seconds once the phone is switched off release the power button keep holding the home button while you connect to the computer which has Itunes running and then you can restore or update the software, you can download the update and connect after the software has been downloaded if your phone disconnects, And enjoy you new IOS7.

  • Restoring only certain files after reinstall

    Hi Everyone,
I want to do a fresh install of Mavericks on my Mac Mini because it's become bloated with a bunch of work stuff and is super slow. I don't need any of the stuff in my own profile as it's now all on my MBP. When I do the restore from Time Machine I just want to restore my wife's profile and only her iTunes and iPhoto libraries - the rest can be trashed.
Is there a way to just chose certain applications and folders to be restored? Or do I need to clean up everything first, back up and then reinstall Mavericks and restore from the new backup?
    Cheers,
    Adam

I think so. See if this helps:

  • I want to restore a specific backup but I cannot select it in iTunes.

However I found it in my library. I am wondering if there is a way I can add the backup in iTunes. Otherwise I am stuck in the set-up mode and I don't want to set it up as a new phone (I don't want to lose my contacts and text messages).
I must add that I have backups that are more recent than the one that I want, but they don't contain any data, and I'm always stuck in set-up mode when I restore those backups.
After I restore a backup, I am asked to restore a backup again...
    Why is it so compliicated?

  • Restoring only specific folders from a Time Machine backup

I am sorry if this is not the right community to ask this question.  I truly was not sure where to post this as it involves the OS, iOS, Time Machine, iTunes...
I am trying to restore ONLY my photos from a MobileSync folder located on my Time Machine backup. I do not know how to go about restoring just the photos or if this is even possible? Possibly restore the entire Backup folder if needed.  Whatever it takes. I know this sounds odd but my brother passed away and I lost all of the photos on my phone when I upgraded to iOS 7. Some of which have no copies floating around elsewhere. I attempted to retore from backup through iTunes and was informed my previous backup was damaged.  I am currently using the latest version of Mavericks and iTunes 11.1.3.  The backup I would like to recover files from is a Snow Leapord backup dating back to July of 2013 and from an iPhone 4.  I currently have an iPhone 5.
Any help, guidance or insight would be greatly appreciated as I had hoped to print and frame these photos for family members.
    Thank you.

You should be able to just restore the photos.
First though, you might consider making a backup of the drive that has the photos on it. I would get another external HD (anything except WD will do), and use CarbonCopyCloner to clone the drive.
What you would do to restore the photos is just click on the drive that has the Time Machine backups on it, and navigate to one of the backups or the MobileSync folder. In TM the backups are arranged by date; I'm not sure about MobileSync. Then you just open the backup and navigate to the photos, and drag the folder with the photos to your desktop.
I am sure the people at your local Apple store would help you.
    Sorry for your loss.

  • Two devices, one apple id account, want to restore only one and sell

When I upgraded from my iPhone 4 to my 4s, I activated it using the most recent backup file from my previous device. My old phone no longer has a carrier service, but is still recognized in itunes in respect to my apple id. I now want to sell the iPhone 4, and need to restore it to factory settings. How do I perform this task without affecting my current device, my 4s? I am inclined to assume that it will only remove the data/media from the 4, but I want to make sure I am correct before I unintentionally erase all of the info from both devices, which would very definitely cause me to have a stroke. Thanks in advance.

You can erase the device. Make sure you remove it from Find my iPhone as well before you erase.

  • Restoring from Time Machine after erase & install

Hi, I have an iMac I rebuilt and when I plug in my Time Machine disk, all the UIDs are mixed up.
this is not surprising as I created users on my rebuilt iMac in a different order.
This issue is how can I correct the ownership of each of my user directories in /Users?
I tried to "sudo chown -R" but it won't let me do this on a Time Machine backup disk.
the only workaround I have right now is restore the user folder and perform a chown after it's been restored.
what I really would like to do is to continue making incremental backups to my backup disk if at all possible.

do NOT try to chown stuff on TM backups. if the UIDs don't match change the UIDs of your current users on the main drive so that they do match. go to system preferences->accounts, unlock the lock at the bottom, control-click on an account and select "advanced options". in the popup you'll see the current UID and you can change it there too. after you do that you need to run chown on that user's home directory. do that for every user involved. another thing you'll need to do afterward is chown Temporary directories for all users involved. else it will mess up various cache and temp files. log in as a user and run
    sudo chown -R `id -un` $TMPDIR
    do that for every user.

  • HT1368 Buying only specific items from my iTunes Wish List

    iTunes 11.0.2.26 on a Windows 7 pc.
I have a whole lot of items in my iTunes "Wish List" but I only want to buy two or three of those items now. What do I do?
Itunes only appears me to give me the option to:
    a) buy ALL the items that I've added to My Wish List or
    b) buy each item individually
If I go to Edit / Preferences and click the Store tab I DO NOT have the "Buy using a Shopping Cart" option.
How do I purchase JUST the items that I want to purchase now, without having to purchase each one of them separately?

Thanks sunnysearch, hopefully this feature will be included in an update to iOS5.
Until then i'll just use it when I'm at home...

  • Want to restore only contacts and messages

i am upgradung from iphone 4 to iphone 5. I want back up my contacts, notes and messages and other documents to icloud but not pictures and music. should i simply delete the music and photos and then back it up to icloud ? will it help ?

You could go into settings < iCloud <storage and back up. Tap manage storage, then your iPhone back up. You could turn off camera roll in here to not bring the photos back to the new device.
After you have things off you want to not appear on your new device, you would want to go back a couple settings menu's and tap 'back up now' to make a fresh back up without the pictures, etc.
After that, you'll restore from the last back up you just made on the new phone.
    Hope this helps

  • I "restored" my itunes library after erase/reinstall and now I can't play them.

This is a continuing issue from last weeks question:https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4176309
I now get this message: "The song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" So, I click yes and it can't seem to be found. I log into my apple account and download all my past purchases again. This fixes a few of the songs, however songs I downloaded from CDs years ago are now not available to me and some purchases from years past via my previous imac. I was told by several Apple Geniuses that my Time Machine would back everything up, and it seems that it has. I restored them, I guess because they show in my library. Only this time they have exc!amation points and say the files can't be found?! How are they listed but not there? Ugh! Did I put the files somewhere I shouldn't have? I guess it's entirely possible that I don't know where they were supposed to be. I don't have these CDs anymore. iTunes and my iPod have made moving them obsolete so I got rid of them. Please don't suggest I download the CDs again because that is an impossibility. I do however need some direction on what I may have possibly done wrong. I'm super frustrated. I tried again just yesterday and can't find where the original files were restored so I can restore from the proper place.

  • How to only restore only certain elements after reinstall

    Hi guys
Quick question. My macbook is reeeeally tired, so I've decided to give it a complete reinstall of Snow Leopard. However, I am confused how I should proceed without loosing some vital things.
    Here's the thing!
I have a complete timemachine backup of my machine but I do not wish to simply restore this entire image. I want a reinstall completely (to get rid of whatever is making my computer slow) and then just pull certain elements from timemachine to the newly installed and fresh OS.
I this possible? (1) reinstall (2) hook my timemachine drive to the computer (3) selected e.g. apps, musik, docs etc. to restore (i.e. restoring vital elements without getting the bugs back)
I have tried looking everywhere for this, so it would be for great help if anybody can answer!
    thanks

That's much more complex that you may think, and is probably overkill anyway.
Reinstalling apps selectively can be done, but won't work well for complex ones -- if an app comes with it's own Installer, it almost certainly puts other files in other places, in addition to putting the app in your Applications folder. If you don't know what and where all those other files are, and restore them, too, the app probably won't work well, if at all.
It's usually much better (and safer) to address the problem(s) directly.

  • I want to allow only specific url using class-map

i have two  dir on server like abc and  xyz  on the web server , but i have blocked the url using class-map like *xyz*
is there any way to allow specific url  like in dir /abc/login.html and block all the files from /abc dir

Thanks.  Actually, I posted my query because I haven't been able to make Parental Controls in OS X do what I want. I've been trying that tool for a while.  It seems that there are sort of three options:
    1. Allow everything with no exceptions
    2. Block sites that fail an automated filter for "adult" content, and then add back allowable sites.
    3. Block everything, and then add a white list of allowed sites
In my case, option 2 doesn't work, because frankly, I don't care if my kids choose to look at content that somebody has evaluated as "adult."  Generally, the web log says that they don't, and if that does become an issue, then I will deal with it when it arises.
What I want to be able to do is the direct opposite of option 3 listed above:  Allow everything except an admin-specified black list defined per user, and be able to modify that list from time to time when I have a specific issue with a specific user.
I just want to be able - from time to time, like when I know they are behind on school work - to be able block a short list of "innocuous" persistent time-sucking sites as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter etc., even though there is not necessarily any objection content per se on the sites I want to block for that specific user (the "user-specific, admin-defined blacklist").   It is the lost (mis-allocated) time, not the risk of loose morals that concerns me.
Network-level solutions exist, but these do not allow me to discriminate among user accounts as far as I can tell.  If anybody knows of a good solution that works in OS X across various platforms - freeware or commercial - I will appreciate a lead.   Or, if there is a hack that will allow me to accomplish this in Parental Controls, I would appreciate a pointer in that direction, as well.

  • Restoring an iweb site after erase & install.

all of my site info is in the .mac iweb folder, but i can't see a way to load that information into iweb. i use the iweb for a photo gallery on a drum company website, and would rather not rebuild it from scratch. can anyone help?
    thanks
    candcdrumcompany.com

Well, I'm afraid that you have no choice but to rebuild your site from scratch. That is....unless you saved the iWeb "Domain" file before you did your erase and reinstall on your hard drive. This is the file where iWeb saves everything about your website. Without it, there is no way to ever edit or publish your online website again.
Everyone reading this should backup your Domain file NOW! And keep backing it up with every major update of your site! You never know when it will come in handy...
You can find your Domain file in your hard drive in the following folder pathway... /Users/username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
