Want to run classic OS9 on a 17inch Powerbook. Mac OS 9.2.2 & 10.3 DVD

Hello
Can anyone tell me where to get a copy of the Mac OS 9.2.2 & 10.3 DVD, to install on a Powerbook G4 17 inch, which is already running 10.4.8
I want to be able to run OS9 classic.
G4 Powerbook 17 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

you should be able to copy functional 9.2.2 System Folder from another Mac and then just select it in Classic preferences in OS 10.4.8 to run it.

  • Help! I'd like to run Classic/OS9

Hi, what's the easiest way to get OS9/Classic to run on my ibook?
My G3 ibook is running OSX 10.4.6 but has no OS 9 installed, and my biege G3 desktop is running OS 9.2.2. The problem is, I don't have any install disks as both machines are secondhand. The ibook only has a CD-ROM drive.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi again, halfmedley. The Startup Disk pane of System Preferences in OS X and the Startup Disk control panel in OS 9.1-9.2.2 will show all bootable OSes that the computer finds available to it at any given time. So you might, for purposes of illustration, have OS X 10.3.9 and OS 9.2.2 on the same unpartitioned internal drive, and OS X 10.4.11 and OS 9.2.2 on one partition of an external drive, and OS X 10.5.2 on another partition of that drive, and all five OSes (including both copies of OS 9, which might be outfitted with differing extensions and fonts) would appear in Startup Disk whenever the external drive was connected and running, and you could select any of the five to start up from.
There is also the Startup Manager option available in most Macs of the last several years. Hold down the Option key while powering up the computer, and it will display the available OSes on all connected hard drives and optical discs. You can then select one of them to boot from, without changing whatever you've previously set as your startup "disk" in the Startup Disk preference pane or control panel. But a limitation of this selection method is that if two OS versions are installed on the same volume (an unpartitioned disk, or a partition on a partitioned disk), only the one that was most recently selected in Startup Disk will be displayed in the Startup Manager. The other won't be available. Startup Manager is therefore most useful to those who install each OS on its own volume. I seldom use Startup Manager myself, because I have OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.3.9 installed on my Powerbook's unpartitioned internal drive and I seldom start up in OS 9.2.2 any more. But when my external FireWire drives are connected, I do use Startup Manager to select which partition and OS to start up from when, for example, I want to run DiskWarrior from one of the external drive partitions to rebuild the directory of my internal drive.

  • I want to run Photoshop and Light room on my mac, but I'm worried that osx only running eight bits of color will lead to lower quality picture results. Should I stick with Windows?

The headline sums it up. Will running the programs in Windows result in better pictures? Do professionals do touch ups on Mac? Thanks for your responses! I'm new to this.

"Deep colour" - meaning a 10bit colour driven display - can only be achieved in hardware with a screen and a graphics card that support both. The average Windows system does not support this - few do. Only Windows workstation level graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia support this option. These are generally more expensive than consumer cards of the same caliber.
Many screens with so-called 10bit support often fake the extra colours by introducing dithering - true 10bit displays are only manufactured by companies such as Eizo - and they are expensive: prices range to around almost $2000 for a 24" 10-bit screen from Eizo. You also need a special HDMI cable, I believe.
Also, the software must support a 10bit workflow. These are far and between. I believe even Lightroom still does not support this - Photoshop does from version CS5 and up.
If you have a hard time understanding all this: no worries. The reason why you are confused and worried is because you lack the know-how, and, subsequently, reading all that "10bit colour is unsupported on Macs" made you anxious.
In reality, while Windows does support this (and Macs do not), almost no-one uses it currently (beyond high-end film/FX work, cad/cam, and a couple of high end Photographers). Any generic consumer and even most workstation level Windows machines will not support it unless all the hardware and software is properly set up. And it is very costly. Colour management becomes even more intricate with 10bit displays.
In a nutshell: much ado about nothing. A Mac is great for design work, as are well equipped Windows machines. By far the majority of professionals in Photography, Graphic design, Video and Effects editing, and so on, currently work without 10bit hardware, and produce outstanding work.
Unless you are spending at least around $2000 on screen hardware, and limit yourself to a very small group of applications that also cost an arm and a leg, you are not going to be able to use 10bit on Windows either.
You can forget what you have read - it is of no consequence to you. (or if you are interested, learn the technical backgrounds.)  Perhaps in 10~20 years the situation will have changed.

  • Trimming OS9 to minimum and still run Classic + 10.3.9?

    Hello all,
I've read many topics concerning deleting OS9 completely but have had difficulty finding info concerning what actually can be deleted from the OS9 system folder and OS9 applications folder and still be able to run Classic. I have an older version of Adobe Photoshop that I need to run (5.0) and a few games still that I wish to be able to run.
What exactly can be deleted and still safely run Classic?
I know that OS9 takes up a small amount of space but running 10.3.9 on my old iMac G3 350 with only a 7GB HD is at the minimum so I thought trimming OS9 might help some. Or should I just leave well enough alone?
Any thoughts and tips very much appreciated,

  • I Have a silver w/Mirror doors dual 867 running OSX10.2. I try to install OS9.2.1 I get "THIS PROGRAM CAN NOT RUN ON YOUR COMPUTER" Message I need to be able to run Classic.

I have a powermac Silver with mirror doors 867 dual processors running OSX 10.2 no problem there but I need to run Classic but when I try to install OS 9.2.1 I get a "THIS PROGRAM CAN NOT RUN ON YOUR COMPUTER" message.

Your G4 (MDD) dual 867MHz model Mac requires the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 which originally came with that machine. It can not use any other version of OS 9.
The model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 can be installed using the original disk set which came with that machine; that disk set boots to OS X 10.2, but the installer on it can install OS 9.2.2 (Classic) as an option.
There is no stand-alone install disk (such as a retail, i.e. white-label, CD) which can be used to install Classic on that model G4.

  • Do I need System Folder to run Classic in 10.4.6?

I've just bought a new MacBook Pro last night, and in the process of transferring data from my old PowerBook via FireWire connection (the automatic way) it created a number of folders that said "[title of folder] (from old Mac)". In nearly every case, this was accompanied by another folder without the "(from old Mac)" text. One that was only from the old Mac was the OS9 System Folder. Do I even need it, or is all the code necessary to run Classic embedded in 10.4.6?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Is there any way to run Classic on an Intel mini running Tiger?

Due to space limitations, I'm having to retire my old faithful Powermac 6500. It's hard to believe that it's 10 years old. It's running OS8.6, and can run OS9 even though it seems slow and memory intensive.
Is there any way to run Classic mode on my Intel Core Duo mini? It's hardly a matter of life and death, but I still have several older Mac-based games like Railroad Tycoon II and Myst that I enjoy, and they won't run on the newer mini.
If space wasn't a problem, I would keep the old machine running just to play games, but it's not possible now.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    -Bill

The only way is to install (free) emulator programs such as BasiliskII or SheepShaver.
I have both installed, though I only use them to run older programs to rescue old data from obsolete formats.
Installing and configuring them is not trivial, unfortunately.
    Links here:

I don't know if either is suitable for the kind of games you want to play. Graphics is typically where emulators fall behind. But again, I have no experience with those games.

  • Which mac was the last to run on OS9

I am trying to find what older Mac to upgrade to as my 2001 "basketball iMac" is becoming less and less reliable. Is there any way to transfer data from an OS9 machine to a OS 10?  I would consider upgrading to the last Mac that was capable of running on OS9. Any practical suggestions?

Is there any way to transfer data from an OS9 machine to a OS 10?
    1) Probably the easiest.  Get a flash drive & copy data to there. Copy to new machine.
    2) Set up an ethernet connection between the machines & run ftp.  If no router, you may need to connect the machines with a crossover cable.

I was able to upload files by using an FTP server.
I used PureFTPd Manager 1.7 with Mac OS X 10.4. this download does include the server software. I did have to create a FTP user.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/pureftpdmanager.html
I had to boot the classic machine after configuring PureFTP
    I used fetch:
    http://fetchsoftworks.com/downloads.html
    I used version 3. Previously, I used version 4.
You can use any web browser to download from Mac OS X when you turn on Web sharing. This is how I downloaded fetch.
    3) Do both machines have firewire?
If you have a second Mac computer, you may want to try to copy over as many files you can. One way is to use target disk mode.

  • Running my OS9 Apps form my intel-iMac

    Hi all...
Anyone advise me : how can i run my old OS9-applications from my iMac-intel based running 10.5???
please help me in few and clear words so i reach the stuff without reading a lot of webpages or help-articles....
    Many thanks....

You can't do it with any built-in functionality. To run Mac OS 9 apps under the "Classic" environment, you need a PowerPC Mac running Tiger (10.4.11) or below. With Leopard (10.5), you can't even do it with a PowerPC Mac.
There is an application that is supposed to allow you do run Mac OS 9.0.4 with Intel Macs under Mac OS X.
    http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/
But it is far from perfected. And you'll have to do some reading to figure out how to install it and use it.

  • My classic OS9 applications will not open

My Classic OS9 applications will not open, and I cannot find the classic OS9 application showing in the preferences window.I tried installing Classic OS9 on a disc I had from another computer but maybe it was the wrong disc

Here is apple's take on the subject.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929
    Try this:
    1) on your eMac update the machine to 9.2.2
-- ( it needs to be 9.2.2 I think & do not know if you can update to 9.2.2
on Mac OS X.  I think you can update on X, but not 100% sure. )
    2) get a flash drive
    3) format to flashdrive to Mac OS extended
-- ( guess you could use journaled.  )
-- ( need to perserve resource forks.)
    4) copy the folder
         System Folder
    to the flash drive.
-- ( this is the mac os 9 folder.  Only the Max OS X will/may have the 9 on the folder. )
-- ( do not move it on emac like to the desktop etc. )
    5) copy to your iMac.
    6) Bless classic folder.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929 for how.
Let me know how it goes.  Could try it out since I have Classi running in a partition on this machine.

  • Can force a partitioned drive to open in OS 9 w/out running Classic?

So there is no way to "insulate" a partitioned OS 9.04 from opening Classic? I had read that one of the reasons to partition is to be able to set up distinct OS environments in which to run apps otherwise not compatible with the dominant OS. Has the introduction of the OX X/Classic architecture eliminated this as an option?
(This is related to my associated post regarding running VPC 4.02 which won't run w/OSX.)
    Thanks for any ideas.

dbahr: I'm not certain that I understand your question correctly, but I'll have a go at it.
If you have OS 9.x installed on each of two partitions or drives, and one of them is selected for use in providing the Classic environment under OS X, and OS X is running, then there is no way you can open an OS 9-native but Classic-incompatible application. If you try, it will invoke Classic, then discover that it's not compatible with Classic, and some sort of problem will ensue. The nature of the problem may vary with the program in question. This is what will happen regardless of what other version of OS 9 may be available, or where it or the application you want to run in it is located.
If OS X is running the computer, OS 9 can't be put in control of the computer "on the fly." To switch to full control by OS 9, you must reboot, choosing the desired OS 9 volume as the startup disk. If you do this, OS X will not be running, and OS X applications will not be usable, following the reboot.
So in the case of your old Classic-incompatible, OS 9-native version of VPC, it is simply impossible to have that and OS X running at the same time on the same computer. Does this answer your question?

  • Running Classic on new Intel Macs

This is interesting for those of us who may upgrade to an Intel Mac but want to be able to run OS9 software that we treasure.

what did apple do by allowing windows to run on a Mac. if you ask me it is sorta counter productive in a way to OSX sale's. man i want to run OS X tiger on my Beige so bad but its missbehaving by the internal screen going black all the time and locking up the Mac. and i cant mount any cd's or dvd's unless i reboot with a cd or dvd in the drive but only works for a few minute's. man why couldent apple make drivers for the wings personality card on OS X 10.2-10.2.8 to make it work fully. prolly no one will ever make one. but any how that really urk's me on what they did allowing windows on a apple. yea it will boost sale's but thay are also messing with current Mac user's with hardware more than powerfull enuff to run there current version OS X. and now the B&W and yikes will no longer be supported in 10.5 . man that just out right suck's

  • OSX 10.4.11 won't run Classic

I'm not the most computer-literate person, so this is probably a silly question. I have a Powerbook G4 that just crashed with all of my hard drive contents on it, so I had a new drive installed and my OS re-installed along with it. When I brought it back home and updated everything, I tried running a program that uses Classic with no success. When I tried to turn Classic on manually, I got a message saying that I don't have a version of Mac OS 9 installed that supports Classic. I never installed OS 9 to begin with (I assume it came with Tiger when I purchased it?), but I would like to be able to run Classic for certain things. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful. It's probably a quick fix, but I don't want to mess any settings up.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
pre-Gigabit ethernet Powerbook G4s came with 9.1 on their restore CDs, and could also take 9.2.1 retail. They can both boot Mac OS 9 and use Classic.
Their USB ports are behind a back flap between the hinges.
Gigabit ethernet Powerbook G4s came with 9.2.1 and could only use the software/restore CD to install Mac OS 9. They can both boot Mac OS and use Classic. Their USB ports are behind a back flap between the hinges. While booted into Mac OS 9, they could be upgraded to 9.2.2 for best Classic compatibility.
DVI Powerbook G4s are like the Gigabit Powerbook G4s, except the fact they already came with 9.2.2. 867 Mhz and faster versions of these can both use 10.5 and boot into Mac OS 9. Once upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5, they can't use Classic except on a second Firewire hard drive or partition with 10.4.11 and earlier loaded.
Powerbook G4s starting with the 12" and 17" 2003 Powerbook G4s, and later the September 2003 Powerbook G4, will not boot into Mac OS 9, and can only use Classic. These had USB ports on the left and/or right hand side of the keyboard. Once upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5, they can't use Classic except on a second Firewire hard drive or partition with 10.4.11 and earlier loaded.
To tell if at bare minimum Classic is installed, notice if there is a System Folder with the Control Panels in its contents. If it is, and you can't locate it in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic that System Folder may need to be blessed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929
If your Mac should be able to boot Mac OS 9, but won't after Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk loads the Mac OS 9 system folder and you hit restart, you may need to backup your data at least twice, and reformat to include the Mac OS 9 drivers:
