Want to run iPhoto 06 and 08 concurrently

Haven't bought iLife 08 yet as I have concerns about iPhoto and iMovie. I use separate iPhoto libraries for each client that I back up to a DVD and to a firewire external drive. I want to be able to access those iPhoto libraries to reorder photobooks or prints as needed. So I wonder how I can best install iPhoto 08 and keep the iPhoto 6 app on the same computer. That way I can use iPhoto 08 to create the new and improved photobooks, but maintain proper back up options for previous jobs. Thanks in advance.

Nic:
Also I've had an older version of iPhoto damage a newer version library by trying to open it. This was with V5 and V6. It may not be the case anymore but I wouldn't take a chance. So just be careful.
If you want to archive a book you don't have to worry about messing around with the photos in the book at some time so as to make the book incorrect see Tutorial #9. You can then burn the library, via the Finder, to a CD or DVD, for long term storage.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

There shouldn't be any problem running both forms server and IIS
on the same machine. Just make sure the ports that are used are
different. IIS's default port is 80, so either change this port
number or change it for the Forms server's web listener.
You can send reports to email if you use DESTYPE=MAIL.

  • Setting up and running iPhoto and Aperture together.

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to use iPhoto as my main image library. I want to be able to import pictures from my camera straight to iPhoto. But i would like to also have it set up to be able to edit pictures in Aperture but save them back into iPhoto.
Basically i would like to have my library contained in iPhoto but edit pictures using Aperture. Also if there is anyway to get this same setup using Adobe Lightroom.
I just really love the speed you get from iPhoto, But I love the feature set from Aperture and Lightroom.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is something I tried when I downloaded the trial version of Aperture 3.
I had a picture in iPhoto that I liked but had a blemish that spoiled it. The blemish was a dark black line at the top margin. Nothing I tried using the retouch tool in iPhoto removed the blemish. So one of the first experiments I made was to move this particular photo into Aperture 3 and use the retouch tool there. The blemish was gone in one swipe.
Next I dragged the photo to the desktop, then opened iPhoto and dragged the picture into "Events" and finally into the specific event it belonged to. The Aperture edit held.
Is this not one way to use the two together? I cannot retest the process because my trial download has long since expired. I didn't have time to really get to know Aperture in the trial period and so have not bought it.
Further, I recently Googled "integrating iPhoto + Aperture" and found this:
+iPhoto - Because of the availability of options for books, cards, and calendar templates, you might want to use your Aperture pictures in iPhoto. To access the images from your Aperture Library within iPhoto, click on File > Show Aperture Library. When the window opens, you can browse, select and drag the images you want to use in iPhoto.+
+The tight integration of all Apple software, and even with some other 3rd-party applications, makes it possible to make the most out of your photos in Aperture.+
Again, because I don't have Aperture 3, I can't test this process. But I thought it suggested a fairly simple way to do what I want to do. Has anyone tried this?
(PS. I am interested in Aperture because I shoot exclusively in RAW.)

  • Only want to backup iPhoto and iTunes libraries

along with my documents onto a 110 gig hard disk. Where are those libraries?

    Hi Herbert,
The user content is in your "Home" folder which will typically be named after your short name. Your documents will be in the "Documents" folder. Your iTunes library, by default, is in your "Music" folder and you'll want to copy the entire iTunes folder. Your iPhoto library will be inside your "Pictures" folder by default and it'll be a single item, typically entitled iPhoto Library. You can copy that to your external drive.
You want to make sure, especially with iTunes, that you don't just copy the music. Otherwise you'll lose all of the iTunes playlists and other things related to your library.

  • I want to run Photoshop and Light room on my mac, but I'm worried that osx only running eight bits of color will lead to lower quality picture results. Should I stick with Windows?

The headline sums it up. Will running the programs in Windows result in better pictures? Do professionals do touch ups on Mac? Thanks for your responses! I'm new to this.

"Deep colour" - meaning a 10bit colour driven display - can only be achieved in hardware with a screen and a graphics card that support both. The average Windows system does not support this - few do. Only Windows workstation level graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia support this option. These are generally more expensive than consumer cards of the same caliber.
Many screens with so-called 10bit support often fake the extra colours by introducing dithering - true 10bit displays are only manufactured by companies such as Eizo - and they are expensive: prices range to around almost $2000 for a 24" 10-bit screen from Eizo. You also need a special HDMI cable, I believe.
Also, the software must support a 10bit workflow. These are far and between. I believe even Lightroom still does not support this - Photoshop does from version CS5 and up.
If you have a hard time understanding all this: no worries. The reason why you are confused and worried is because you lack the know-how, and, subsequently, reading all that "10bit colour is unsupported on Macs" made you anxious.
In reality, while Windows does support this (and Macs do not), almost no-one uses it currently (beyond high-end film/FX work, cad/cam, and a couple of high end Photographers). Any generic consumer and even most workstation level Windows machines will not support it unless all the hardware and software is properly set up. And it is very costly. Colour management becomes even more intricate with 10bit displays.
In a nutshell: much ado about nothing. A Mac is great for design work, as are well equipped Windows machines. By far the majority of professionals in Photography, Graphic design, Video and Effects editing, and so on, currently work without 10bit hardware, and produce outstanding work.
Unless you are spending at least around $2000 on screen hardware, and limit yourself to a very small group of applications that also cost an arm and a leg, you are not going to be able to use 10bit on Windows either.
You can forget what you have read - it is of no consequence to you. (or if you are interested, learn the technical backgrounds.)  Perhaps in 10~20 years the situation will have changed.

  • I want to run PEAP and LEAP at the same time...

I have an environment where I have 25 Laptops connected to my wireless network using PEAP and TKIP over an XP wireless client with a certificate. I also just purchased 25 IPAQ's with built-in wireless and they have the ability to do LEAP or PEAP. I am having issues getting the certificate to take up residence on the IPAQ's, so I thought I could do LEAP instead. What are the caveats of running both protocols at the same time and what configuration issues will I run into with this on the IPAQ's?
I tried to setup LEAP yesterday without success, basically because I don't know what step I am leaving out. Maybe its TKIP that is causing the problem, I don't know.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    David Beaver

The access point doesn't know or care which EAP flavor you're using; LEAP vs PEAP is configured on the client, and you have to specify on your server which flavor(s) you'll allow.
Supporting both PEAP and LEAP is inelegant, though, and exposes some of your clients to the dictionary attacks LEAP is subject to. You'd be better served by getting PEAP working correctly on your iPaqs.
You don't need clientside certificates for PEAP, and you don't need to put the server certificate on the iPaq unless you're self-signing. If you are and the problem is that the iPaq isn't accepting your root cert, then the problem may be that it's not in a format the iPaq recognizes. Try importing the root cert into IE and then re-exporting it in DER format, then see if the iPaq will take that.
Also make sure that your pda's are flashed with the latest OS and firmware patches. I've got PEAP working just fine on my HP 5500, but it did take a little tweaking to get it there.

  • Run Aperture and iPhoto on an external drive and edit from laptop?

Can I run iphoto and Aperture on an external hard drive, like a file server?  Can I store pics on the external hard drive and edit using iphoto or aperture on the external hard drive from a laptop ?  How do I make this work?
    HELP!  I'm maxed out!

    Hello Laura,
what is it, that you want to achieve?
Move the Aperture Library to an external drive to free space on your laptop?
or do you want to share your Aperture Libray between your machines and access it in parallel on a network volume?
The option "1" is easy to achieve, the option "2" is not supported by Aperture; Aperture (and iPhoto) are single User programs, see this:
Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252
To move your library (or parts of your library) to an external drive you have two options:
move the complete libary using the finder to a local, external, MacOSX formatted drive,
or turn your library into a "referenced" library: relocate the master image files to the external drive, but keep  the Library itself (much smaller now) on your laptop. This way you can browse your images and rate them, use them as screensaver, even if the external drive is not connected.
    Regards
    Léonie
P.S. the same (*** grano salis) holds for iPhoto; you can move the library, or your libraries, to an external drive using the Finder; you can make the iPhoto Library referenced, but referenced libraries are much better supported in Aperture, for Aperture has been designed in espacially to support huge, distributed libraries - in iPhoto I found it it safer to have several smaller libraries than to have one huge, referenced library - that was one of  the reasons I moved from iPhoto to Aperture.

  • Cannot Find Photos on External Hard Drive Using iPhoto and Time Machine

    Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting on this forum and am really hoping for some help! I have a 2006 PowerBook G4 that is running iPhoto and Time Machine, and I've used an external hard drive to backup everything on the computer via Time Machine. When I plug the external hard drive into my newer 2010 MacBook Pro, I follow this path to try to access the photos:
         External Hard Drive > Backups.backupd > PowerBook G4 12" > Latest > Macintosh HD > Users > Me > Pictures > iPhoto Library
When I click "iPhoto Library", I get the following message:
"The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library."
So, I do as the error message says and I hold down the "option" key and iPhoto launches and says:
What Photo Library do you want iPhoto to use?
In this case, I choose "Other Library..." and again follow this path:
         External Hard Drive > Backups.backupd > PowerBook G4 12" > Latest > Macintosh HD > Users > Me > Pictures > iPhoto Library
When I choose this, I again get the following message:
The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library.
So as you can see, I'm feeling a bit like I'm chasing my tail in trying to open these photos. I did follow another user's advice and confirm that all photos are infact on the hard drive by using the "control" button and clicking "iPhoto Library" under the pictures folder, and choosing "Show Package Contents". All looks to be in tact in the "originals" folder when showing package contents, however, I just can't find a way to actually view the photos in iPhoto. I really don't want to import all the photos to my current MacBook Pro, because I'd like them to live on the external hard drive (which is formatted for Macs) so that I can browse the photos on the external drive, rather than housing it on my computer.
One other thing I tried was opening iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and going to File > Browse Backups...  which essentially opens Time Machine and shows me the photos on my MacBook Pro but gives me no option to view them from my External Hard Drive.
Any super users out there willing to lend me some help?
    Thanks!

The iPhoto Library is a Time Machine backup, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down to choose another   library.
You can have an iPhoto library on an external drive and use it from different machines
and you can have a Time Machine backup
The two can not be on the same volume - and iPhoto can not access the TM backup - it must be restored to use it

  • Named and Concurrent users

    Dear Friends,
Please help me to find named number of users in PeopleSoft specific to module.Below are the modules i am using and i wanted to know named and concurrent users using these modules
    Human Resources
    Benefits Administration
    Pension Administration
    Thanks
    Uday.

    Hi Bart,
Difference between named users and concurrent users:
Named user means when you buy BOXI you buy a certain amount of named user licenses and then you give each of these named users a login. It`s a cheaper type of license but you have to know exactly who your users are, and so is pretty useless if your userbase is constantly changing or your exposing Infoview over the web.
Concurrent user licenses are now only available in BOXI Edge - the equiv in BOXI Pro\Premium is a CPU license, which means you can let as many people login as your hardware will support. Concurrent user licenses are useful when you don`t know who your userbase is - you can just give a generic login for people to use. Or give people specific logins and not worry that they might not be using the system and using up a valuable named user license.

I want to upgrade to snow leopard from 10.5.8. Im hesitant to proceed because I'm running iPhoto 7 and word 2004. I want to be sure these programs will still run and I won't lose my photos or the events I have ordered them by. Should i make a partition on my new Iomega external and clone it just in case? I'm running time machine and backing up all the time onto an old LaCie, and right now I have a copy of my iPhoto library on new Iomega, which I recopy every couple of weeks. I got the computer new several years ago and it came with iLife and 10.4 OS I think.

Word 2004 is almost 10 years old, you will not be able to upgrade beyond Snow Leopard with it. IMHO you have gotten your money's worth out of the application and need to upgrade to Office for Mac 2011, this will work just fine and read your old files just fine too. What will not run beyond SL are all PowerPC (PPC) apps such as Word 2004. You will need to update, upgrade or replace any PPC based apps you want to use. I would recommend taking a little time and check for updates to each of your apps. Then open System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) click the Applications link on the left and then look for any PPC based apps, those are the ones that will not run. You can upgrade to SL just fine with the apps you currently have however if you want to go beyond SL (it's already 2 generations behind) you will need to update or upgrade your apps. You can take your time doing it but eventually you're going to have to begin

I have an iMac 2013 running OSX 10.9.4. I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup user files to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMack Hard drive.
So, say I make the backup today, delete iphoto libraries from my iMac, and then backup my iMac in a week. What happens to the iphoto libraries that are on the external backup drive now that I am backing up the iMac where they no longer exist?
I will have them backed up to a separate second external drive as well.
I'm just very cautious about removing them from the hard drive.
Thanks for helping and understanding my crazy caution!

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
