Want to setup FTP server on Mac 10.6 using Airport Express

I am wondering if it is possible to use my mac as a FTP server with Airport Extreme. When I connect my mac directly to cable modem I could get an unique address for the mac. However, when I connect via Airport Extreme the address was changed to 10.0.1.3. This address can be used only in the same LAN but not from the outside.

You should be able to configure your AirPort Extreme to map the FTP ports to your Mac. In AirPort Utility put the AirPort Extreme into "manual setup" mode, then select the "Advanced" panel and the "Port Mapping" tab.
To make this work well you should first assign a "reserved" IP address to your Mac using the Internet panel, DHCP tab, "DHCP Reservations" section.

  • Setup wireless network for mac and pc with Airport Express?

    Mac Mini/OSX/10.8.2/Airport Express
    Question,
I have my AIrPort Express setup for my Mac Mini and I have dell computer that I want to share the wireless network. Is it possible to setup a wireless network with my mini and the pc using only the AirPort Express? Is the Airport Express a wireless router?
    Thanks,

If your Mac Mini is connecting to the Express using wireless, then this confirms that the device is working correctly.
The Express is a wireless router that can support up to 10 wireless connections, so your Dell computer should be able to connect assuming that its wireless card is working correctly, and the Dell indentifies the network and enters the correct wireless network password.
If you are having difficulty with the Dell PC connecting, this Windows troubleshooting document might help:

  • Found a fix for printing from Mac and PC using Airport Express!

I hope this helps somebody else because it's taken me hours and hours of frustration to trip over this solution. I have a MacBook, Airport Express and a Windows XP PC. Internet worked fine but I could not print form the PC via airport. I tied all the various links from iFelix (thanks to him for what sure seems like a lot of work to help others) but they didn't work. Here's what did...
To setup a printer using the Bonjour Printer Wizard:
    1. Download the Bonjour for Windows installation package from the
    Apple site http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/.
    2. Install Bonjour for Windows by launching the BonjourSetup.exe file from the folder where place it was downloaded.
    3. Start the Bonjour Printer Wizard either by clicking its icon on the desktop or by selecting Start -> Programs -> Bonjour -> Bonjour Printer Wizard.
    4. Follow the installation steps until the Install Bonjour Printer screen appears.
    5. In the Install Bonjour Printer screen, select Generic in the Manufacturer list and then Generic / Postscript in the Model list. This step is the same for any printer model you have.
    6. Follow the rest of installation steps.
The key is the Generic and Generic/Postscript settings. I also set up the Parallels program on my Mac. These instructions come from their documentation. It's the only thing I've found that works. Hope it helps some of you!

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

    Wirelessly
Just select the option to make your AirPort Express join an existing network in the setup process

  • Using Airport Express as internet connection for one Mac and one PC

Will probably be judged a complete dork for this question. I have successfully set up my Imac G5 to run an internet connection through an Airport express. My partner runs a PC (Windows XP) and I want to connect this too. Have installed a USB wireless card on the PC, and installed Airport Utility, but it just won't find the Airport Express - it will however find the Imac with something like 96% signal strength. So I set up a network on the Mac and have successfully linked into it with the PC, but it soon comes up with a connectivity problem that will not allow internet browsing. So two questions - can I connect two computers to the Airport Express at once for internet browsing, or do I have to do it through linking the PC to a wireless network? If the latter is the route - any ideas on what the connectivity issue will be? Help!

No, not if the AirPort Express "joins" the wireless network.
No, I do not want to join a network.
It is possible to have the AirPort Express "create" a separate wireless network that would not have access to the Internet, but if you did this, you would need to log off of your normal network....(losing your Internet connection) and then log onto the AirPort Express network when you wanted to listen to AirPlay.
Then, when you wanted to have Internet access, you would have to log off of the AirPort Express network and log back onto your normal wireless network.
Ok, I understand that it is not possible to use airport express only for sound streaming while having an Internet connection at the same time. Airport express does need to join a network if I want sound streaming next an Internet connection. I wanted airport express not to get into way of my Internet connection because in this case the sound streaming messes up sometimes. When I configure airport express only as a sound output, the problems I encounter fade away but then I cannot access to the Internet. Anyhow thanks a lot for the answer.

Unless your HP printer is an AirPrint-ready device, just connecting it to the USB port of the AirPort Express base station will not make it so.
On the other hand, connecting a non-AirPrint printer to the base station's USB port it can be shared out by the base station's print server. Please see the following Apple Support article for details.

  • Why cant i print from my ipad using airport express but i can print from my mac using the express

why cant i print from my ipad using airport express but i can print from my mac using the express

Because your printer has to be Airprint compatible and connected to WiFi. There are applications, such as Printopia, that will allow you to print through your computer.

  • How do I know if my mac is compatable for airport express?

Stupid question I know but I have a minimac osx 10.3.9 when checking
under system profile this is the info I get: hardware: airport card: no information found.
I take it this means I cannot use airport express

Not sure about your question... The AirPort Express (AX) is a 802.11b/g wireless router.
...I have a minimac osx 10.3.9 when checking
under system profile this is the info I get: hardware: airport card: no information found.
I take it this means I cannot use airport express
That indicates that your Mac mini does not have a wireless card installed. Therefore you would not be able to make a wireless link to an AirPort Express (AX).
However... you could connect your Mac mini via Ethernet to a LAN port on a wireless router. Then configure an AX to join the wireless network as a wireless client. The Mac mini would then be able to stream music through the wireless router to the AX.

  • I want to use Airport Express in my hotel room using the wired internet connection, but I don't carry a computer, just my iPad.  Is that possible?

I want to use AirPort Express when I am traveling.  I would like to use a wired internet connection in a hotel room to create a wireless connection.  However, I do not normally carry my laptop, just my iPad.  Is it possible to do this?

You will have to pre-configure the Express using AirPort Utility on your computer before you leave on the trip. The Express will store and remember the settings.
You might want to check with the hotel in advance to make sure that they have Ethernet ports available. Most hotels have switched to wireless and the others are not far behind.

  • Do I have to use airport extreme to be a main network if I want to use Airport express extend my wifi range

Do I have to use airport extreme to be a main network if I want to use Airport express extend my wifi range.

You cannot extend wifi from a different brand router..
    Only apple to apple.
But the apple router does not have to be the main router.. it can be in bridge.. as long as it is creating a wireless network it will work fine.

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

  • I'm new to Solaris 10 and need help to setup ftp server

    hello!
I just installed Solaris 10 and I'm trying to setup an ftp server (with ftpd) but I don't know how to do that
my server doesn't need any security or authentication
I'm looking for the default shared files directory
Also wondering what to change in what configuration file...
This OS looks quite similar to some linux I used before but the differencies are big enough to drive me crazy
    anyway thanks for your help.
    Any advice is welcome :-)

    cd /etc/ftpd
    vi ftpusers
put a # in front of root and any other users that you wish to be able to ftp
    then svcadm restart ftp
If you want to set up an anonymous ftp server, there is a little more involvement

  • I'm running Snow Leopard and want to setup a server.

    Hello everyone!
This is the situation: I have large amounts of data I want to be able to access from afar. Some friends as well. At some point we would want to share some of that data. Dropbox or similar services are not an option since space is limited and expensive. We prefer spending some money now to paying monthly... So we thought of setting up our own server. Although I'm far from being a computer specialist I proposed myself as some sort of vanguard...
The idea would be to provide to all four of us some 5 tb for storage that should be accessible from everywhere to each one of us. (I have a small MacBook Air and would like to travel light while having access to my data at home). This "data" would mostly be small files from 500kb to 5mb, a smaller portion is about 50-100mb (mostly pdfs and scans).
Then sharing: If we set this up and get it running there would still be the question of how to share data... Suggestions?
I'm running a Mac Pro 3.1 on Snow Leopard. What are my options? What kind of software or whatever this is called will I need to setup a server? For several reasons I don't feel like upgrading to Lion and Mountain Lion, in fact I'm quite stubborn about this. This means (as far as i know) that I won't be able to use OS X Mountain Lion Server...
Hardware: Any tips? We're thinking of investing some 1000 euro.
From what I've read some OS X server would be relatively easy to setup; is there other options?
I would be thankful for a link to good guide as well!
    Thanks to everyone in advance!

SL Server runs the Apache Server. To access a remote server you set up would have to access it via a direct IP address, like 292.128.12.144, since you can't assign a pretty name to your broadcasting server such as www.goodstuff.com.
That's incorrect. If you have a dynamically assigned IP address you're going to need a way to reference it whether it be Wide Area Bonjour else a dynamic DNS service… either way you're not referencing it via an IP address. If you have a static IP address then pointing a domain name or sub-domain to it is really simple.
The biggest issue to my mind here is the upstream speed as you mentioned. Irrespective of how much storage one can cheaply attach to their server one is going to be limited to how much of that can actually trickle out of their internet connection. Moving 5TB over SATA is painful enough let alone trying to move anywhere near that over DSL or cable internet. Sure you're not going to want to transfer that all at once but that data all came from somewhere right… and all it takes to really bottleneck things is for 2 people to want something at the same time.
Don't get me wrong as there are plenty of benefits to running your own in-house server. Deprecating via the internet access to services like Dropbox isn't really one of them though. If you're mostly on the local network to your server the sure but if not then there are better solutions.
For what it's worth I use both OS X Server (Lion) and a web host as both provide a benefit that the other can't.

  • Setting up FTP Server on Mac OS 10.4.4

    Hello.
I am trying to set up my Mac so that I can use it as an FTP Server.
I am connected via BT Business Broadband and I am using the following router:
3COM Office Connect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router (3CRWDR100A-72)
I have been assigned a Static IP Address, which I am 99% certain that I have entered correctly into the router. If I go to www.whatismyip.com it shows my static IP correctly.
What I cannot do is access my Mac via FTP from another computer.
I think I need to set up port forwarding on the Router to the Mac, but I dont know where to do this.
Then, once I have that set, How do I set the Mac up so I can connect via FTP.
    I hope this makes sense..
I would be very greatful for any help / advice.
    Many thanks
    Glenn

    Hi
Thanks for the reply - its very much appreciated.
So I go into my router and forward on ports 20 and 21. I assume that the router will automatically forward to the Mac without entering any IP addresses (?)
You mention that if I need read /write access I will need an FTP client.
I host some websites which I need to back up to the mac. The backend system allows me to automatically back up to any computer with ftp access.
So, I want to have the back ups sent to the Mac using ftp. (The back end will connect using ftp://user:password@serveraddress
which will obviously need write access. Would this still work without an ftp client. (as I write this, I have the feeling it would be OK as the back end to the hosting will be using ftp protocols anyway))
    Any clarification would be great
    Many thanks again
    Glenn
