Want to Share Just my Desktop!!!

Hello everyone...
I am on a wired network... and i just want to share my desktop folder only not all the drives... and if its possible, the people who are tryin to connect the Desktop don't have to enter any password or something...
Regards
Tanz

The Shared Folder in the Users Folder, in the hard disk drive,
may be a better and more secure place to put items others
could have access to; since your actual desktop folder usually
is safeguarded by your account user password to limit access.
There are several ways to share access and files between Macs
and also between Mac & PC users. Some of them do require a
level of access set up in advance between specific computers
since to do otherwise may leave a computer too vulnerable.
While results from a search from where I am may vary from a
search performed elsewhere (some countries have internet
rules different than others) a general search via Google that I
just did using the following words in the order shown says a lot:
' Mac OS X 10.5 Help: shared file access ' (google search - results link)
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=MacOS+X+10.5+Help%3A+shared+file+access&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=Mac+OS +X+10.5+Help%3A+shared+fileaccess&gs_rfai=&fp=3f73b7d243bf661
Also: Learn about File Sharing in the following specific article(s)
• Mac 101: File Sharing

• Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Sharing Files on your Network
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/17131.html
Actual 'Screen Sharing' is another matter, such as Apple Remote Desktop.

{Since this probably is not needed, I included those two links above to show
them in contrast to setting up file sharing access through the Shared folder.}
The basic Shared folder can be set for other user's access without having
to compromise the security of your user account or the main Admin account.
As an Admin or owner, you have the permission or privilege level to set other
user access limitations in the computer; so it is not open to anyone out there.
So, it won't be super simple to accomplish since it retains security & integrity
if done correctly, of the computer, its system, and the user account data.
Another general Google search of certain words (noting regional access,
language, and country filters on the internet may change between what
I see in results, and what you may get by performing a search, there) on
these words, may yield a few different leads to instructional pages:
' Mac OS X 10.5 shared user folder ' (google search results - link)
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=MacOS+X+10.5+shared+user+folder&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=Mac+OS+X+10.5+ shared+userfolder&gs_rfai=&fp=3f73b7d243bf661
Some results in both Google search links are similar; the two direct to web
pages above may be more than adequate to set up sharing a folder/file.
However, sharing the Desktop folder, (by itself, is in your User folder, in the
Users folder in the hard drive) may not allow anyone the kind of access
most persons would want open to a network or to other users.
For matters about Securing your Mac, there are Apple Support documents
in PDF you can download for offline use, these are about 3MB in size. If
you need to know Admin and server level security settings, that's in depth.
Hopefully this is not too much info; though there are several options, the
basic setup will involve controlling access so it is not open to everyone.
And that is, if it's set up correctly.
{If you keep many items on the Desktop of your computer, that is not
recommended; there are a few reasons why, on that score alone.}
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Want to share just calendar between two iphones--will icloud do this?

The title really says it all.  My husband and I both have iPhone 3GS and we want to share a calendar and hope to have it update without having to sync to the PC. Is this what iCloud will do if we choose to only turn on the calendar portion?  We share an iTunes account already and sync on the same PC.  Thanks so much.
    Kathryn

Yes, You should see each others calenders. When in the calender app the top bar will show how many calenders sre showing. It will be either a number or all or no calenders. Tap on the "calenders" button in the upper left of the screen. That will show a list of all the calenders available. You can also add a calender by tapping the "edit" button and then "add calender".

You need to install Office on the computer from the installer DVD or disc image you purchased.

Now I want to share my iTunes account with my Apple TV  1, and my iPad 3, without the need of booting up the unreliable laptop where I set it up last year.   do I have to use my. O for a while I thought the we're sharing, now the Apple Tv has gone back to telling me to use my computer too sign into iTunes.
there maybe a far simpler way to enjoy iTunes on my iPad and Apple Tv.   I also have the Sony blurry Google Tv.  I will upgrade my PC with Windows Z8 and a screaming ran cache, ram disk on a 79 mother board and then pay 5 bucks a month for OnLive Plus that I hpe to show wirelesslypy on the big scree 50 inch Panasonic.   I have waited for years to upgrade as I wanted to help my kids in college.  They are finished and so I have money fr my self.CELEBRATE

My husband and I each just got iPhone 4S.  We also purchased the New iPad.
We've set up individual iCloud and iTunes accounts.
We each have contacts that we don't want to share between our iPhones, but would like to share on the iPad.
I'm seeking help as to how to sync these accounts properly to obtain this goal.

If you intend to "share" the iPad, that's not gonna work if you both have separate Apple ID's & iTunes accounts. Like iPhone, iPad is not presently designed to be shared like a computer. Confirm if this is your intent.

No it is not possible.  Content purchased from the iTunes Store is permanently tied to the account from which it was originally purchased, and Apple does not provide a way to change it.

If you turned off Contacts wouldnt that mean that the Contacts would no longer be backed up to iCloud as well? That would make it a pain when upgrading a phone to not easily pull contacts back down.

  • Want to share more than just a public folder

I am running Tiger (10.4.11) on my PowerMac and I want to share more than just my public folder. Now I read several support documents from Apple suggesting that if I want that my only option would be giving out full root access to my guest user. I am not doing that.
I want to share my 2nd hard drive entirely. So is there any work around to share this. Either with or without a remote logon procedure. I tried the netiinfo manager, but couldn't get that to wortk properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sharepoints should take care of it easily...

Choose the whole external drive as a Normal Share & set the Users, groups, AFP, & SMB rights.

  • I have a macbook pro retina and just bought a macbook air. I want to share all my music between the two, both that which was purchased from iTunes and copied from my cd's.

I have a macbook pro retina and a macbook air which I just purchased, I want to share all of the music on the retina with the air.

The simplest way is to use an external USB drive. Copy the iTunes folder to the drive while it's connected to your MBP. When done eject the drive. Connect the drive to the MBA. Navigate in the Finder to the /Home/Music/ folder on the MBA. Copy the iTunes folder from the external drive into the /Home/Music/ folder.
OS X Mountain Lion- Drag and drop.
If you have a backup of your MBP, then you can use it to restore the /Home/Music/iTunes/ folder to the MBA.

  • I just want to share files

I'm upgrading because we need an application that only runs on the server.
But I just want to share files and we're all friends so when I create a document someone else should be able to modify it and not get a message that it's read-only. I made the user account and I made a group. I put all the users in the same group but I still not able to collaborate.
Multi-user for multi security, but we just want to get work done!

You need to add an Access Control List (ACL) entry to the share point on which your group needs read & write access:
    1. Enable ACLs for the volume that houses the share point (shared folder): Click Sharing in Workgroup Manager, then click All. Locate the volume and check "enable access controls on volume," then click Apply.
    2. Click Share Points and select the desired share point. In the ACL list in the Access section, click the Users & Groups button and drag your group into the list. Choose "Read & Write" from the pop-up menu and verify that the inherit settings apply to all child files and folders as well as the parent (inherited will be no). Apply changes.
    3. If you already have files or folders in the share point, mount that share point on a client computer and copy each file/folder off, delete it, then copy it back to the share point. This way, it will inherit the ACL information you set in step 2. From now on, new files created in the share point (or copied to it) will inherit the privileges set in step 2.

  • I want to share an officejet pro 8600 connected USB to win7 desktop with an xp netbook

    Hello,
I have an officejet pro 8600 connected via usb cable to my win7 desktop.  I want to share/install the printer on a netbook running winxp.   I used to share my previous printer over the win7 workgroup.  The netbook can see the workgroup and the win7 pc, but not the printer.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, I have gotten further now.  I added the x86 driver, and then manually typed in the \\pcname\printername on the xp netbook.  It asked for a username and password which i thought was strange because password share is not enabled.  anyway, i read on another forum that you can type any username and leave password blank and it will grant access.  and strangely enough it worked.  or so i thought.  the post also said it would not re-grant access upon reboot of the xp machine, so i tried that as well.  well now the printer appears on the xp machine but will not print/open preferences/test print.  so it appears that I am still stymied.
see this post where i got this info.

Every time I put the cursor arrow over an internet link in an e-mail, the little blue "F share" panel appears. If I open the link the panel stays visible. If I click on it to get rid of it, a window opens asking me to login. I don't want to login; I don't want to share anything on Facebook. How can I get rid of this intrusive bloody thing?

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

  • Can I direct all users in one OU to share a common desktop/my document? (Folder Redirection)

Say we have a few OU's, each OU will only have 1 active user at any given time. Lets call it OU: A,B,C,D. When a person leaves, I want the new user to be able to access all of the same desktop/documents of the previous user. I don't want to have to come
in and copy the desktop/my documents folder each time for this.
Say if  User in OU "A" leaves and there's a temp/replacement, can I just copy the existing user's profile and create a new one in OU A and have the new user be able to log in with their new account but have all the desktops and my documents
of the previous user. Of course if this can be achieved, even when the machine gets replaced, the desktops/my documents are there.
At the moment, we have shared folder for those groups of people but we're not enforcing them to save to the mapped drive. Lots of them have no idea what a mapped drive is. :( I want to simplify this process and get away with spending hours of backing up/restoring
people's my documents and desktops when they come and go.

    Hi,
I don't think we can set multiple users to a same redirected folder.
Under Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location, there is only one option seems close to your purpose which is "Redirect to the following location". However to get it work, the user need to be the owner of the target folder, and it will not
work even we set Everyone as the Owner.
Meanwhile I do not understand why you would like to share a redirected Desktop with all users. If you would like to share files or folders, you can map a folder for all users. If you would like to publish applications to all users, you can deploy application
    through Group Policy.
If you have any feedback on our support, please send to [email protected]
Yes you can and I confirm this works. The key is to uncheck
    "grant user exclusive rights"
here's an example of what I did.
    Created OU A and B
    OU A - Added user A1 and A2
    OU B - Added user B1 and B2
Created Security Groups A and B
Share folders \\PDC1\A\Desktop and \\PDC1\A\Documents grant permission to security group A (repeat for group B)
Use basic folder redirect and the option to redirect everyone to the same shared drives as above. In the setting tab, uncheck "Grant user exclusive rights"
And to answer your question, we do you mapped folders. Each user have their own mapped drives but no one is using it. They don't even know what mapped drives are in most
cases. They tend to like to save everything to their desktops or their whatever the default saved location is, in this case it's "Documents". There are plenty other reasons why I want this.
