Want to step up from iPhoto. Recommendations?

I know, it's a little silly to ask for recommendations for a "better iPhoto" on the Aperture form, but I (or rather the user I'm asking on behalf of) have some particular requirements.
At the moment he has a massive iPhoto library that is taking up most of the space on his MacBook's internal hard drive. He since bought an external and moved the Library over there. The problem is that he'll need to keep at least a minimal Library (probably "only" a few gigs) on his internal drive for when he's traveling. This minimal Library would be a subset of what is on the external drive. The external drive will be used mainly as "offline storage" for less frequently accessed pictures and an unofficial backup.
I showed him how to switch between iPhoto Libraries by holding the Option key but he finds it quite laborious to manage both Libraries -- it seems like you can't directly drag from one Library in to another but instead have to export the photos from one and import them in to the other. Please correct me if I'm wrong. One thing he'd like to be able to do is compare the Libraries side-by-side, so he can quickly tell what's what.
I think what we want isn't multiple Libraries but rather a Library that can span multiple disks. Our 'perfect program' would make it quite obvious WHERE the photo is located -- my user needs to be certain of what picture is on what drive. User confidence is a huge thing here -- a program that hides potentially useful information is NOT what we want.
I've downloaded the trial of Aperture. It appears that "Relocate Master" is close to the function he needs but what he really wants is more of a "Backup Master" to copy certain files to the external but also keep them on the internal drive if he wants.
Also, I haven't been able to determine how you get the file path to show. The list view in the browser tells you just about everything except this and it seems like you can't add columns like you can in Finder. Is there a way of automatically 'smart tagging' photos based on where they are on the filesystem?
If anyone has input, either on how to get iPhoto working how we want, or whether Aperture (or LightBox, or ???) is what we want, or even suggest a solid Finder work flow that will allow him to browse his massive collection (coverflow?) and keep it organized.
Finally, we have not tried iPhoto 9 yet, but I didn't see anything that looked like it addressed his need in the New Features part of the README. Again, pls correct me if I'm wrong.
Thank you for your advice and time!

I've been checking out iPhoto 09. I see it has a "Browse Backups" option that works with Time Machine. How does this workflow sound? User imports the photos to the Library on internal hard drive, runs Time Machine on his external drive. Any photos he doesn't want on his MacBook he can delete and bring them back using iPhoto's "Browse Backups" function. Yes?
A bit nervous about requiring Time Machine to restore things... as a general rule we try to avoid locking things in to a vendor specific format, and the prospect of just trusting it to work properly doesn't really appeal (we haven't had great luck with this Mac.) But it sounds like it might do exactly what we want. Thoughts?
Guess this question really belongs on the iPhoto forum now. I'll test this and ask any further questions there.
I would still appreciate any input regarding the previous potential solutions as well!
thanks again,

I'm a brand new Mac user. I want to send photos from Iphoto to my local store for printing, like I can do in Picasa. I can't find that option in Iphoto. I do not want to order them through Itunes.

I have not idea how you do it with Picasa but with iPhoto you either export the photos to a desktop folder and upload from there or burns that folder to CD - or from the upload window use the media browser in the lower left hand corner of the upload windows - media ==> photos ==> iPhoto

  • Want to view Photos from iPhoto on TV set

I purchased Composite AV Cable from the Apple Store and was told that this was all I needed to view pictures from iPhoto on my TV. It didn't work because the TV didn't recognize the iPhone , so I returned the cable. Later I spoke to a friend and was told that I also needed a docking station in addition to the AV cable to view pictures on the TV.
Before I drive back to the Apple store, does anyone know if this will work. I have an iPhone 3G and I want to view pictures on an older TV set.
    Thanks,

As long as you have composite input on your TV (and know how to set your TV to use that input, of course), you can view your photos from the iPhone. No need for a dock. But you must +carefully read+ the description of the cable's function, which states, +"Connect an iPod or iPhone to your television with the Apple Composite AV Cable, gather up your friends, and watch videos or slideshows together on the big screen."+
Slideshows, not photos. You must launch the Photos app, select an album (or the Library) then tap the Play button to start a slideshow. That's what is output to the TV, not just whatever picture (or other activity on the screen) is displayed - just slideshows and videos.

  • I want to move photos from iPhoto to my Iphone without syncing my iphone photos to my Mac

    Hello,
I want to copy photos on my computer in iPhoto to my iphone without transfering the pictures on my phone to my computer.  I believe that the syncing feature in itunes will download the photos into itunes as well as upload the photos I've selected.  In summary:
Photos from computer to phone:  Good
photos from phone to computer:  Bad
Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks.

I want to copy photos on my computer in iPhoto to my iphone without transfering the pictures on my phone to my computer.
    Simple.
Once iPhoto opens, don't import anything..
    Just quit the iPhoto application.
I believe that the syncing feature in itunes will download the photos into itunes
iTunes does not download photos from the phone or into iTunes.
iPhoto imports them if you tell it to.

  • Imported from iphoto want a do-over

Purchased a new iMac.  Transfered my old iPhoto library (thousands of photos) to iPhoto on new iMac because I wanted to transfer those from iPhoto to Elements 11 which I just purchased.  My plan was to use Elements to organize and edit.   I used the import from iphoto option in Elements to import my iPhoto library.  None of the original dates came with my photos!
I read another forum post here which discussed why this occurred.  I think I understood that information but I now need to know the quickest way to remove all those folders of pictures that have incorrect dates from Elements so I can try again.  Can someone please direct me as to how to start over?  Thank you!

Barbara - I created a folder and put all the photos into it so they are not associated with iPhoto anymore.  Then I selected import from PSE Organizer and chose the pictures that I wanted to import.  They import with the "Date Modified" as the original date and "Date Created" as today's date or the import date.  So, your directions worked and I'm on my way to getting something done, finally.  Thank you!
My final thoughts:  I'm very disappointed with the way the "import from iphoto" option works.  I don't understand why the program wasn't designed to bring along the date from the exif data.  Organizing a lifetime of family photos greatly depends on the photo's original date.

  • Problem importing photos from iPhoto

I want to import photos from iPhoto. I only want to import photos from two or three albums in iPhoto on my iMac. When I plug in the iPad Air, I choose sync from selected albums. I choose the albums I want to import from and click on "sync" or "apply". When the sync process gets to step 5, "importing photos", it stays on that step never able to proceed to step 6. Is this an iCloud problem? Thanks for your help.

I found out what the problem was. "iCloud Photo Sharing" was turned off on my iPad. Now everything is working great. I would have just deleted the inquiry, but I could not find out how to do that.

  • How do I put just pictures from iphoto to idvd to make a dvd?

Okay. I had a lot of trouble today. I wanted to get pictures from iphoto to a dvd. So I did that by going to iphoto then share then burn. Well, that worked on my blu ray. The pictures would come up sorta like iphoto (the rolls and everything) But my videos did not work however. But I figured out that they were .mpg and they need converted. But I heard that what I did (using iphoto) won't work on reg. dvd players but for some reason it works on my blu ray. Anyways, I heard that using idvd will work. How do I get my pictures over to idvd and burn it to a dvd? I tried doing this once but the themes were what was messing me up. The pictures would show up in a theme and I don't want that just the pictures. Any advice, tips, etc would be appreciated!

    Hi lace66
Welcome to apple discussions. You may wish to pose the very same question to the iPhoto Forum also since I'm not 100% certain if any of the following apples to iPhoto 6 => iDvd. It's really a question for that particular forum. It's been months since I've worked in earlier versions of iLife. However, w/in ilife'08 as well as the latest iLife version '09; you could do it easily like this:
Essentially you simply select the photos you want within iPhoto, go to the top menu where it says "Share" => Send to iDvd. Or (another option) you could burn your photos directly one step down on the drop down menu where it says "Burn" (directly below "send to iDvd") if I'm not mistaken.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Missing all photos and events after upgrading to Photos from iPhoto

I just upgraded to photos from iPhoto.
When I opened Photos for the first time it asked if I wanted to move / import from iPhoto to the new photos app I said yes.
A message came up that said that I needed to repair the permissions on my iPhoto library I said ok.
When the library opened in Photos there was nothing there. It was as if the library was brand new with instructions on how to add images and events.  I went to iPhoto to open the library. Same thing iPhoto now looks like new with information on how to import photos and create events!
Where are all of my images?
How do I get them back?
    Thanks!

HA! User Error. Supper embarrassing. So... Is there a way to delete this request?

  • Adding photos from iphoto to ipod nano 6th generation

I want to take photos from iphoto (mac os x 10.6.8) and put them on my ipod nano 6th generation.  I can't find anything on itunes that mentions photos and my ipod doesn't show up in iphoto or applications.

Thanks. I followed through with those instructions. Now when I go to sync, I don't want everybody else's music to show up on my ipod.  How do I sync? And if I check sync only checked songs, will it sync ALL checked songs? We have alot of songs, but I don't want all of them.  How can I manually sync?
    Thanks!

  • Can no longer sync photos from iPhoto to my iPad or iPhone

I can no longer sync from iTunes to my iPad or iPhone if I want to sync photos from iPhoto.  I keep getting the following error:
"The iPad "XXXXXXXXXX" cannot be synced because it cannot be read from or written to."
If I choose not to sync photos everthing works fine.

I had a similar problem only neither my iPad nor my iPhone would sync and I was getting error 1106.
I looked it up and it said delete the iphoto cache, which I did and I also turned of syncing photos.
Now when I turn on SYNC PHOTOS FROM, the choice of Select albums........ is greyed out and cannot be clicked.
I don't want to sync my entire set of photos.

  • Problem Importing to Aperture from iPhoto

I have already imported the entire iPhoto Library to Aperture, but several images are missing.  I now want to import the missing images from iPhoto to Aperture.  The Aperture Manual states that, in Aperture, I should be able to open the iPhoto Browser by using File>Import>iPhoto Browser, but when I go File>Import I do not get the iPhoto Browser option.  How can I select specific images in iPhoto to import into Aperture?

The Aperture Manual states that, in Aperture, I should be able to open the iPhoto Browser by using File>Import>iPhoto Browser, but when I go File>Import I do not get the iPhoto Browser option.
Some parts of the manual need updating. The iPhoto browser has been discontinued, when the unified Aperture-iPhoto library has been introduced.
    If you want to import selectively from iPhoto, open your iPhoto library in Aperture and create an album;
add the images you want to use in Aperture to that album
then select the album in the Info panel and export this album as a new Aperture library.    File > Export > Album as library.
Switch to your main Aperture library (File > Switcch to Library)  and import the small library with the iPhoto album.
    Regards
    Léonie
Added: You could also simply open iPhoto on the iPhoto Library and Aperture on the main Aperture library and drag the photos you want from the iPhoto window to a project in Aperture. But that will only give you the current jpeg versions, not the original files as well.

  • Trouble Setting up Flickr from iPhoto '09

I already have a Flickr account and I want to send photos from iPhoto to Flickr. When I click on an album and then on the Flickr button, iPhoto asks me if I'd like to set up iPhoto to publish to Flickr. I press "Set Up", which sends me to the Flickr site, where I authorize photos to be sent. When I go back to iPhoto, the window is still up asking if I'd like to set up iPhoto to publish to Flickr. Flickr has already allowed iPhoto access, but no matter how many times I click the "Set Up" button, it doesn't go away or change to reflect what I've done. How do I get iPhoto to recognize that I've already set up Flickr?
All help appreciated and thanks in advance.

    Hi Adam,
First, we have 3 accounts linked to Flickr so we can confirm that the upload link does work. We remember that Flickr asked permission to use a third party uploader and once this was approved everything worked and a time bar appeared telling you how long the upload's going to take. This process was done in Leopard and we haven't had any issues fortunately.

  • My Photoshop Elements moved my pix from iPhoto but the picture names have been lost???

I installed  a copy of Photoshop Elements 12 yesterday.  I had been using iPhoto and had literally hundreds of pictures, each with an aphpa-numeric names.  I imported the photos from IPhoto into Elements 12, but there are no longer identifying names on any picture.   Where are the names?  There is a column of numeric file names in [Organizer] along  the left sides - which mean nothing to me.  I have tried every button I could find and searched the Photoshop Elements for Dummies for a possible solution.  I asked two friends familiar with full blown Photoshop and they are perplexed.  So am I.  Has anybody any useful suggestions?  Thank you

If you used the "from iPhoto" command, you made duplicates of your iphoto library photos. Just delete them and then decide how you want to proceed. "From iPhoto" is to be used if you decide you want to use the elements organizer exclusively and not iphoto anymore, but you don't have to do that. You can make a small test catalog with just some photos from iphoto, or you can set up PSE as your external editor from iphoto, or you can export photos from iphoto to the desktop, edit them in PSE and then reimport them back to iphoto as new images.
Which would you like to try?

  • I am wanting to import photos  from my imac to my ipad.  the help page directed me to open the photo button under the device listing on itunes.  There is not a photo button and I am connected to the computer.  It does show buttons for books, movies, etc.

I want to import photos from iphoto to my ipad.  The help button said to press the photo button under the device list.  There isn't a photo button shown.  Could it be hidden?

If you connect and select your iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, on the right-hand side of iTunes (not on the left) there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders or albums/events to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
