Want to store movies in IMovies to External HD

I just purchased a WD Passport 1 TB to empty out my MacBook Pro. I have 12 GBs memory left and wanted to free up some space (since 2007).
It came with a USB 3.0 and 2.0 wire, but when I hook up the External HD, it doesn't show up in iMovie 08. Also, drag and drop doesn't work. The one thing I think I am missing is a fire wire which is what some of the online communities suggested. I seacrhed the forums, but couldn't find any specifics.
Want to do the same to iPhoto. Any suggestions?

YOu need to format the drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled) for iMovie to see it. FAT32 will not work.
To format your drive, open DISK UTILITY (in your Applications/Utilities folder)
Choose Partition. Set Partition scheme as GUID. Set formatting as Mac OS Extended, journaled (or HFS+)
Then iMovie can see your drive.
In iMovie 08, you can move Events to the external drive, but not projects. If you upgrade to iMovie 09 or iMovie11, you can move both.
All moves must be done in iMovie so that you do not destroy the links between your projects and your events.
Click VIEW/EVENTS BY VOLUME in iMovie 08. Then you can drag the Events to the new drive in the Event Library list.
If you go to iMovie 09 or 11, it is a little different. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK. Also, hold down the command key while dragging to MOVE. If you just drag in iMovie 09 or 11, it will copy not move.
USB will work fine for your drive as long as you are not importing from a tape based camera (like a miniDV camera). For that you need Firewire.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I'm a bit lost - you first say

In the first statement, aren't you using an SD card in the camera? And what do you mean by "unused SD card"? Cameras put their files in specific folders on a card, and your device only reads photos and video from those folders, not from anywhere else on the card.

Storing movie projects (iMovie) on external drive

I recently upgraded to Lion and in the process decided to buy an external drive to hold all my movies. The problem is iMovie sees the projects but no longer play. Other than moving all the movies back into the original movies folder is there a way to have you projects on an external disc working through iMovie?

You need to move the Event files from within iMOvie. Put the movie files back where they were, open iMovie, and use its media browser to move the Event files. That way the Projects will update.
Projects are simply XML-type files containing references to the Event files and instructions on how to handle the clips. They aren't standalone movies - those get created when you Share or Export.
I seem to remember that for iMovie to see the external disks, they have to be formatted Mac OS Extended

ITunes HD full - want to store movies only on ATV

I am syncing my ATV with my laptop. Everything works fine. I can buy movies/TV shows on either my laptop or ATV. They sync back and forth fine. I can sync them to my iphone as well. Everything works as I would hope. BUT my laptop HD is full from other material. Everytime a new podcast/movie/tv show starts to sync, it takes up the remaining space and stops. However, my ATV has plenty of room. Is there a way to just leave the movies/TV Shows on my ATV and delete them from my laptop HD? I don't see how to do this. Would home sharing help? Currently my ATV and iTunes are logged into different iTunes accounts.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Your first issue is to protect your laptop. You should not let a hard drive get more than 90% full especially if it is also a start up volume. You need to remove some items from your laptop.
At the same time why not consider a large enough external HDD to move some of your laptop content and also to hold your itunes library so that your purchases can safely sync back to itunes. You may also want to consider a second external drive at the same time for back up if you don't already have one.
There are ways to keep content from syncing back to your laptop, but I don't recommend you do that. Your first job is to free up some space on your laptop, overfilling your drive will more than likely at some point begin to corrupt your directory structure, which may mean your content gets lost and can't be recovered without specialist software, if at all.

That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

I have Home Movies from iMovie to back-up. What format for external drive?

I have Home Movies imported into iMovie 11 on my iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
I am saving the cpmleted movie projects onto an external hard disc. A Seagate 1TB.
I have had problems with file sizes as I keep getting the message that a movie project is too large for the medium. It seems that I can't store anything in HD.
I've looked at the disc and it's formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32)
Am I right that this imposes a maximum file size that I can save?
If so I have looked at the Disc Utility on my iMac and I can see that I can reformat the external drive.
I have a choice of -
Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled)
MS-DOS(FAT) is this the same as MS-DOS (FAT32) it already is formatted as?
ExFAT
Windows NT Filesystem (Tuxera NTFS)
I'm guessing I should choose the MAC OS Extended (jounaled) or the Mac OS Extended (Case- sensitive, journaled)?
The Seagate Hard Drive is model SRDOSPO
I don't understand the differences between the above formats and would like help on chosing the right one for my Home Movies.
I also have an Apple TV3 which I use to watch the movies on my tv.
Are the home movies stored both in the iTunes file on my iMac, so I can see them via AppleTV, and the external hard drive.
If so can I just use the external hard drive without having these large files filling my iMac disc?

The difference between case sensitive and non-case sensitive is self-explanatory. Non-case sensitive iis easier to work with as it can avoid confusion with files names.
The others are weird and wonderful/partly useless Microsoft formats only of interest to Windows users, or those who want to have both Apple OS and Windows on the same computer. Not all of them can be read by a Mac at all, some of them have inconvenient file size limitations.

Yes, you can import to an external drive by choosing it from the Import Screen.
Once an Event or Project is in iMovie, it is best to move it to the external using iMovie, so the Project does not lose links to the Event.

So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:

Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.

In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

Imovie 10: how to move the (movie) library to an external drive

Hi all,
using imovie '11 it wasn't any problem to move the (movie) library to an external drive following these instrcutions: <http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2289?viewlocale=en_US>. After updating to mavericks and imovie 10 I can't find the hard drive icon to pull down the drive list any more.
Maybe I missed something very obvious but would be very happy for any suggestion.

Your events and projects now reside in an file or files with extension .imovielibrary. You can create a new library wherever you want from within iMovie and drag and drop events into it from an exisitng library. If you want to move the complete library, select the library then go File - Consolidate Project Media. This ensures the library is self-contained and doesn't have any links to external media which could break when it is moved. You can then move the library to the external HD using the Finder. When you restart iMovie you will have to select File - Open Library - Other and navigate to its new location.

From your post I understand you're wanting to move iMovie project and event data to another drive. I found the following information in the iMovie help that answers your question.
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or storage devices
Connect a storage device that contains the target library to your Mac, or copy the target library to your Mac.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu.You can choose from recently opened libraries, locate an existing library on your Mac, or create a new library.The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Tip: To select multiple clips or projects in the same library, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates.
Burn, I have never tried, since I have iDVD and Toast for those ocasions when I need to burn a DVD. However, since it is free, I think it is worth a try.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can alsouse SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.

Another easy way to fix this.
What I've noticed is that upon upgrading your projects and events to work with iMovie 10, initially it will work... Until you quit iMovie and reopen it again. Any events with hashtags will show up without the star next to the iMovie event. SO, if you happen to read this, after upgrading to iMovie 10 from its predecessor, immediately change the event name to NOT include a hashtag/pound symbol.
Otherwise, if it's too late, you can either do the above or this...
Hold down option and click on iMovie. This will prompt you Locate, Create a New Library, Cancel this window, or Choose a different library. What you want to do is create a new library, call it whatever you want to, this will only be temporary. After the program opens, it should be a blank Library. Then go to File > Open Library > iMovie Library (your original library) and proceed to change the name of your events. Quit the program. Go into your Movies folder in Finder, delete the library you temporarily created, and your back in business.

To make sure that all required media is in the library contain the project you need to "Consolidate media" see: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351
You can then copy the library to your laptop with the Finder and open it with the same version of iMovie. The last phrase is important since Apple has made changes in the project format several times even between minor updates of iMovie 10. Earlier versions may not be able to read the library and later versions (not possible in this case) may cause the project to be updated so that it is no longer readable by the desktop version. iMovie on the laptop will not at first find the copied library - you will have either to double click on it or File - Open library - Other and navigate to its location.
