Want to sync without loosing a ton of data (again)

I'll apologize in advance for such a long post, but I'm not sure what else to do. iTunes, during my version upgrade, lost months of my personal data.
Question:
I'm wondering if there is a way to back up my data on my phone and be really sure it (my data) is properly backed up? Is syncing the same as creating a backup file? I'm not in the mood to try to backup or sync only to find out that my data is lost again. I've spent hours searching for answers since I'm trying to avoid a repeat.
What I'm trying to do:
I don't want to unleash iTunes to backup and then sync out of fear I'm going to lose some or all of my data. I'd like to backup my phone and be sure it's really backed up, so if my sync sinks me (again), I'll actually be able to recover my data. I try to sync to Windows7's Contact list. iphone's on 4.2.1 and iTunes is on Version 10 I think it's an iphone 3G and I've had it for a couple years.
Background:
I use my phone for a small business where I'm on the road. So I have some contacts, calendar entries, and notes that are pretty important to me and really need it in my phone and not in my computer.
I sync infrequently because of what I listed above combined with the fact that syncing is painful. It creates duplicate contacts, which is a well documented problem on these boards, but with no solutions I can find for my situation. (I use the Windows7 Contact list). iTunes will also neither sync my calendar nor notes, which I can understand, since it's got to be several hundred kilobytes of data which is clearly a challenge for the developers at Apple. I have historically hooked up the phone, agreed to let itunes download and install all it claims it needs, and walked away for a half hour or so. Then I spend another 40 minutes deleting duplicate contacts.
My last sync (2 weeks ago) deleted all my personal information back to January. It involved an iTunes upgrade and I lost some photos, calendar entries, recent call list, notes, etc. I spent 3 hours with Apple tech support only to conclude that the backup file was not stored correctly. Apparently iTunes writes the file then wipes out the phone. At the end of the process, it was unable to restore it (some error said there was already a sync in process, or something like that). The backup folder had the correct date and time stamp, but upon reviewing its contents; it appeared to be incorrect. My data was lost and the Apple tech support apologized.
Now I'm not sure what to do. I may resurrect my palm pilot, since it sync's everything and, in more than 10 years, never lost any of my data. I'm not too keen on carrying around two devices, however it may be better than constantly fighting with my iphone. Sorry for venting.

iTunes updates your iPhone's backup as the first step during the iTunes sync process and you can manually update your iPhone's backup without syncing by right-clicking on your iPhone under Devices in the iTunes source list and at the menu window that appears, select Backup.
This link provides the data that is included with the backup or that should be included with the backup, which is substantial.

Understood and I do the same, but what would happen in regards to this data if your iPhone were lost or stolen?
iTunes will also neither sync my calendar nor notes, which I can understand, since it's got to be several hundred kilobytes of data which is clearly a challenge for the developers at Apple.
The iPhone supports syncing calendar events, notes, and contacts with Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 with Windoze. It is enough of a challenge trying to sync this data with the definition of a bloated application that is Outlook, much less trying to do the same with the Calendar app included by Microsoft with Windows as well.
Most the well documented problem with duplicate contacts on this board has to do with those with a MobileMe account who are syncing contacts over the air with the account and syncing contacts direct with a supported address book application on their computer via the iTunes sync process which will cause duplicates on the iPhone.
Are the duplicate contacts caused when syncing contacts with the Windows address book on your iPhone only, or in the Windows address book as well?

  • HT1386 I want to sync without loosing ny music that I already have in my Ipod how can I do that ?

It is the second time that I have sinc and lost all my music 450 songs I am not very happy the way synv is working

It souds like you are using more than one iTunes library/computer to get music from. You can only sync with one iTunes library but you can manage music and videos among different computer/libraries. See:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
If yo sync with another library your iPod gets erased and its contents replaced with what is in the new iTunes library.

The problem is she can't update to new software until she connect to iTunes, but she don't want to loose all that info.
    My question is:
If she register her apple ID on that new computer, and sync the phone, will she loose everything? or iTunes will back up first (because apple id match) and then sync.
Otherwise, how can I do it? The closest apple store is 3 hours away. thanks!

Before you connect to a new PC, make sure that autosync is disabled in Edit/Preferences/Devices, otherwise her phone will be wiped during the following sync.
If she has data on the phone she wants to save, back up manually:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to her new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your phone without syncing. Transfer the purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the phone for the first time.

    Hi, Abril_Perez17.
This may be related to a new feature embedded in iOS7 that shows all purchased music by default.  Go to Settings > Music, then turn off Show All Music.  See if the issue ceases once the feature has been disabled.  This information is located on page 63 of the user guide below.

  • Turning off sync without loosing music

After a year of managing my own music transfers I made the mistake of using iTunes sync to give my iPod a fresh reload to make sure all my edits to the library were up to date. Now I can’t turn off sync without iTunes threatening to erase everything on the iPod. As a temporary patch I’ve got iTunes set to only sync checked items but it’s really lame to have to trick iTunes into leaving my iPod alone. Anyone know how to turn the feature off without wiping the iPod?

#@!&%$# ... using my "sync on checked" trick wiped everything without warning. I guess I got my wish and I can go back to manually managing the iPod. I HATE iTUNES! It's deliberately crippled in so many ways ...

  • Sync without loosing data ?

    Hi,
my PC crashed and I had to reinstall a fresh copy of windows. How should I sync now? It keeps saying if I sync everything will be gone !!!!

Lawrence, I followed this, but when in iTunes 11 and I
    Select iphone
    Music
    Sync music
It asks if I want to wipe music videaos etc and replace with this library, and this library hasn't got my memo's.  But If I click 'On this Phone' the memos appear on there - so I suspect that I will overwrite the memos and loose them?
Electronics guy, iFunBox won't sync with my iphone, and reports an error that a lot of others have reported last year with no fix seemingly available.
The joys of an iPhone hey.
Surely there must be a way to actually get at my own stuff I created on my phone?  Please help.

  • Phone will not sync to new pc. dont want to sync and loose data on phone

I loaded software on my pc – pc was stolen – all info is on my phone but not new pc.  New pc has a different name and now phone will not sync and keep current info, I don’t want to lose my data on phone.  I have changed my password many times – if I use new password in Itunes store on pc it works but will not work on phone.  Apple ID is different on phone.  How do I fix all of this?

It seems that I have multiple ID’s and 2 email addresses.  My email address changed and I did so on iTunes but when going on to store it asks for password and still shows old email address.  ID on iphone is the old email address and I don’t remember the password.  How do I fix this.  I cannot login on iTunes on my phone.

  • Need help, I want to know if these apps could be removed and reinstall without loose my game saved data? Could I recover my saved data somehow?

    I have an iPhone 4 32GB bb 02.10.04 running at 4.1 version.
The PC which I used to synced it is now formatted. Then when I selected to sync my apps it ask to remove them and install those saved on my PC.
The question is this games apps would be possible to recover my saved game data: GunBros., GlobalWar HD, OriginalGangstaz HD, MafiaWars ID, StreetRacing, and MegaJump.
Please help. Let me know how I would be able to do it.

    See:

You can just reatore from backup. If you restore via iTunes all yur synced media like apps and music has to be in the iTunes library since synced media is not included in the backup
If you restore from iClould backup only iTunes purchases are restore.

  • HT4962 How do I update my ipod touch to ios 5 without loosing all of my data?

    Hey,
I really want/ need to update my ipod touch to ios 5. I dont want to loose all of my media, apps etc. Is there a possible way of doing this? Ive heard about backing up your things but im unsure as to how to do it. Any help would be much appriciated.
    Thanks, Rosa

As long as you do the update on the computer you use for syncing and all thesynced media (apps, music, video etc) ore in you iTunes libray or computer (for synced photos), you should be OK.  Howevery, things do happen so you should have a backup of your iTunes library somewhere..

  • I got a new laptop and my iphone won't sync without losing all my saved data

I got a new laptop as my old one died. My iTunes account says that I can only sync with one authorised device, which is my dead laptop. I was able to back up all my music on to the new one but when I go to sync it says that I will lose my saved data. Does that mean my photos, contacts, text messages etc?
How can I sync to my new laptop without losing everything?

Your music/movies, etc will only be where you put them.
Copy everything fom your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one

  • TS4062 my iphone 4 has mild water damage and will not sync with cable.I want to sync it over wifi to reload data I deleted during my troubleshooting, but I did not set up for wifi sync before the damage. Is there a way that this can be done now ?

My iphone 4 has mild water damage. As a result, it will not sync with it's former XP computer with the cable. I deleted the phone's data in the troubleshooting process. I want to get it back by syncing over wifi, but I did not set up this capability before the damage occured.is there another way to initiate this feature ? I can tell that they are connecting in the cloud because an app I just downloaded on the phone is showing up in itunes on the computer.

You don't need to access your e-mail account, just get into your Apple account and change the e-mail address. If you can't access your Apple account, then you have a bigger issue to contend with.

  • How do I sync with a replacement laptop without loosing app !!!data!!!

I had to replace my old (broken) laptop that I used to sync my iPad with a new laptop. Since then I do not dare to sync my apps in fear of loosing the app data. I know that I can get the apps back anytime, but the data associated with the apps I can not afford to loose.
The sync problem effectively prohibits me from upgrading to ios5 as well.
And yes, I have transferred all purchases to the new laptop, both laptop and iPad have all app updates and therefore should be at same versions.
Still, when activating app sync I get the message that everything will be erased, which I just can not afford.
I read across a lot of answers in the communities to this topic, but none states that I will not loose my data...
Any tip on how I can sync without loosing my data?

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
For items you cannot get the above way use a third-party utility such as Phone to PC

  • How can i get a new id by my iphone without loosing all apps

    Hi,
I have an iphone which is connected over the ID of my ex-boyfriend. Now I want to know if it is possible to get a new ID for my phone without loosing all Apps and dates??
    Thanks a lot

Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to purchase them. Your ex should, if he has not already, change his password, which will make it impossible for you to update any apps he purchased. Technically, you do not own them and have no right to them. Create your own Apple ID. and set your phone up with it. Preferably by using Settings>General>Resets>Erase All Content and settings. Failing to do so could give your ex access to your contacts, calendars, etc. without your knowledge.

  • I have a new computer and want to sync my phone and all it's apps to my new computer. How do I do this without loosing all of my apps?

    I
I have had a total meltdown of my system and have had to rebuild my computer because of a lightning strike which took out my main computer and my backup system therefore I do not have a way to restore all of my old files. When I rebuilt my computer I decided to go with Windows 7 rather than staying with Windows Vista when I attach my Apple iPhone to the new computer and tried to sync it, it tells me that it wants to wipe out everything on my phone. My iPhone was backed up to the cloud but I do not see way to restore it from the cloud and I do not want to lose all of my apps and data that are on my iPhone. I have gone to the Apple online store to see if I could restore the apps that I have purchased from their and have not been able to find anything that relates to reinstalling all the apps that I have purchased as well as my bookmarks and addresses as well as a lot of the data in documents to go and do not want to lose them as it is the only place that I have them left. How do I do this without losing all of my apps and data that is on my iPhone?
Please help out of this nightmare and keep me loyal to iPhone.
This has become an all day and night ordeal.
