Want to understand using Reader to manipulate GIS PDF exports

We export GIS maps to pdf files and make then available online. I've heard that the GIS layers are preserved in the pdf file. Can Reader users manipulate those layers (e.g. on/off, stacking order)? Is there anything we need to do extra in GIS? Are there settings other than resolution that need to be set during export?
Also, since I have Acrobat Pro installed on my laptop, and I don't think I want to install Reader, how do I test Reader capabilities with these map pdfs?
Probably looking for a link to some basic Reader tutorial that includes layered pdf files.

Adobe never recommended using a Reader/Acrobat combination until version X. Adobe recommends users install Reader X and Acrobat X as Reader X has enhanced protections to keep your computer safe when browsing pdfs on the net. Feel free to install both on your computer.

I have used these features in the past with Acrobat Pro, but there wasn't any documentation that hinted at what appear to be limitations. For example, using Acrobat Standard I can send a PDF for email review, but the only tools that my contributors can use with Reader are the sticky note and highlighter. In the past, when I used Pro, the whole suite of markup capabilities including Drawing Markup and annotations like strikethrough were available.
I have looked everywhere for information about how to enable these other commenting tools, but can't find anything. Am I missing something or is this some misleading marketing materials that have led me astray.

You either need to upgrade to Acrobat Pro or the users need to upgrade to
Reader XI, where all of the commenting tools are available by default.

Embedded PDFs using Reader X

Hi,
I am developing a kiosk application that uses Reader X to display PDFs of content embedded in an ASP page. I've used this application with Reader 9.4 and have used the following embed tag:

All the toolbars, navpanes, and scrollbars hide just fine so that the user's access is limited to just viewing the document. Now, installing Reader X and accessing a PDF hides everything as expected, but going to another page in my application then returning to the page with the embedded PDF and opening the same PDF document shows a floating toolbar on the document, showing buttons for printing, saving the PDF, zoom in/out, and a button to reveal all of the toolbars. Obviously, this isn't secure or acceptable for a kiosk application to allow the access to the full set of Reader toolbars to the user. I've forced the page with the embedded PDF to do a full refresh when accessing the page, but it still comes up with that floating toolbar.

Something tells me this might be a bug.

Yes it's a bug. The child instance of Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) spawned by the web browser isn't properly reinitialized when you do a page refresh, and it doesn't take account of the "toolbar" parameter being passed as it did the first time it opened. We've known about it for a while, which is why I kinda cheated with my instructions...
The workaround (as used in said cheat) is to show the navigation pane icons (&navpanes=1), which are mutually exclusive to Read Mode and so force it to shut down - this works reliably no matter what you do with your browser buttons. If you want nothing in your window other than the PDF page and don't want Read Mode to appear on refreshes, then you'll need to switch to full screen mode at the document level until the bug is fixed.

Which version of Logic? I have 9, but I've yet to install it. I'm just creating the images of the disks atm to install them on my Haswell. Will let you know how that performs.
Logic 10 would most certainly work fine though.

A 10.5 era machine is better left on 10.6.8
I don't advise upgrading it to 10.7 as you'll have to buy all new versions of software for a older model machine, some are not ready yet and some of your third party driver software may not be available for your other hardware.
10.7 is slower and requires 4GB of RAM actually.
10.8 is being released this summer and it won't run on certain older graphic cards, so shortly you will be behind again.
Save your money for a new 10.8 machine. IMO
These rapid OS X upgrades are for those who like to be on the cutting edge and can afford to buy new hardware often, you didn't even upgrade to 10.6, so your not that sort of person obviously.
But you do need to upgrade to 10.6 for security issues and faster video. It will run your 10.5 Rosetta software, but 10.7 will not.

Make sure your browser is closed and check to see if there are any processes related to Acrobat still running. If you are using Windows, Control-Alt-Delete > Processes tab. Look for AcroRd32.exe or Acrobat.exe or Acrotray.exe and stop these processes from running before you try your update again. A good ol' computer reboot might do the trick for you too.

Want to use Reader Extensions for highlighting and adding comments

The basic use for which we plan to use Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions is for highlighting and adding comments.
In a J2EE application, we create PDF document at runtime using (PDFBox). The purpose to use Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions is when the end user sees the PDF created he/she should be able to add highlights and add comments to the PDF document and save it back to server.
The question is what all I need to do. Just install Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions on the server. What should be done specifically when the PDF is created using PDFBox? Add any information to the PDF so that when PDF is viewed by the user he/she can add comments or highlight.
Can I get sample application and I also need Developer Guide. I think Developer guide comes with the setup? Did not find any place where I can down load a demo setup of Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions.
Can you please guide me in the right direction? I am collecting more information as I search the internet and go through the forum, but it will be very helpful if someone can give correct information.

I was reading Adobe Reader SDK document (Acrobat_SDK_overview.pdf), in that it is mentioned under
About rights-enabled documents:
You cannot programmatically rights-enable a PDF file.
Well I am confused, because my requirement is like this:
1. PDF is created using (PDFBox) as part in a J2EE application.
2. After the PDF has been created, from the J2EE application, the PDF will be send to LiveCycle Extensions to right enable it. (There is no user interface, and it is planned to be done programatically using Adobe libraries. The PDF will be send to LiveCycle Server and Right Enabled PDF will be returned.)
So if there is no way to "programmatically rights-enable a PDF file", how can it be done without having an web interface?
Just to confirm, PDF can be prgramatically right-enabled using LiveCycle libraries right? I have to right enable PDF files prgramatically and not using LiveCycle web interface.

NObody is orced to download Acrobat. Still, you did, you had your trial, and now it's finished. If you don't want to buy it, just uninstall it the normal way (but DONT) just delete it, ask if you don't know how to uninstall. Once it is gone, you might have to repair Adobe Readet. So, be angry but understand you had a choice of what to download. It would help you if you remember the full names of products, there is nothing called Adobe XI.

OK so why does it take so long to install apps on the iPhone and why so long to make a backup.
Granted I have a ton of apps (like many i would imagine) But if they are mostly 1-3 MB and a few 10 MB why does it take soooooo long to install them?
Secondly to do a back up of my iPhone it takes well over 2.5 hours for about a gig of apps. Syncing happens fast but backing up and installing are very painfully slow!
I just want to understand why.

If you are downloading apps on the iPhone it really depends if you are using 3G or Edge, or the WiFi network. It still going to take a bit of time because it downloads and unpackages the application right their. Lets say you downloaded 3 or 4 apps and added/changed a few contacts it's going to take longer. Otherwise we might need to wait for an update or sync every time you plug your iPhone in. You certainly have a good notebook, so it's definitely not your computer.

If two of you shared the same contacts you were logged in with the same Apple ID. In order to avoid this you need to use different Apple IDs, and be using separate Macs or separate user accounts on the same Mac.
One or other of you should create a new Apple ID at http://appleid.apple.com for which you will need a non-Apple email address which hasn't been associated with another Apple ID.

You will need that old Apple ID and password, which does indeed still exist. Apple doesn't delete Apple IDs, though if this ID was in the control of your company they may have changed the password. If so, you will need your former company to log into the iCloud account using that ID and password and erase the iPad or remove it from iCloud:

Until that's done you cannot change those settings, and if you try to restore the iPad will have it locked with Activation Lock and thereafter be unusable.
