Want to upgrade 9i to 10g without downtime

Hi Experts
I have a 9i database which is running our ecommerce database it is a database which is running smoothly now , however i need to update it to 10g database as all our other databases are in 10g , is there a way without downtime i can achieve this .
Ii do not have an option to shutdown the database , i have allowed at the most few seconds to achieve this . Can anyone suggest me some workable steps by way of which i can achieve this.
Probably something like a replication technique ?
Thanks Experts.

My "environment" uses both TNS and Java, and it takes about 5 to 30 minutes to update all database references, plus the time needed to stop all of the components, which can be anything between 5 minutes and X hours.
When reading the Oracle whitepaper called "Zero Downtime Database Upgrade Using Oracle GoldenGate", it clearly says : no downtime for the database. That part is correct. But then it says, "..very minimal time required for application switchover, typically less than one minute and in most cases, only seconds."
That's way understated, but I understand that it must fit into the "Zero Downtime" idea.
For my application, it's about between 10 minutes and X hours. It's typical for database procedures to underestimate the impact of the application. How else can one make such general statements, knowing there are hundreds and thousand sorts of applications (all Oracle), then stating - without actually knowing how they work - one can switch in 1 second. Even when dreaming, that's a bit optimistic.
But the question may to the thread opener : no database downtime, or no application downtime ?
Know that if the application has downtime, the fact that the database goes down or not (for a shorter time than the application downtime) is actually of no importance. Because end-users cannot connect anyway.

  • Upgrading from Oracle 10G standard edition to Oracle 10G enterprise edition

    Hi
I want to upgrade from Oracle 10G standard edition to Oracle 10G enterprise edition. Is there any script provided by oracle which I can run on existing Oracle 10G standard edition to upgrade to enterprise edition after completing the licensing formalities or do I need to install Oracle 10g Enterprise edition from scratch and then migrate my data.
    Ramanbir S

You will not need to perform any data migration to upgrade to EE. The diffetence between standard en enerprise editions are the features offered. When you upgrade you can use the same set of files you used to install standard edition and just add the enterprise edition features you want to use in the 'Custom' section of the Universal Installer.

  • Document for upgrading 8i to 10g using RMAN backup

    hi
I need to restore a 8i database on a server and then wanted to upgrade it to 10g.
Is there any good documentation available ?

RMAN won't perfom upgrade. You'll have to resotore your database using the Recovery Manager reference manual 8i: http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a76990/toc.htm . (Watch out, the above mentioned reference is for RMAN 10g, there were many differences between 8i and 10g, if you try to use 10g syntax on an 8i rman it will partially work or won't work at all)
Install 8i on your target OS.
Restore/Recover with rman 8i your 8i rman backup.
Your rman backup must be located at the same path where it was when you obtained it on your source OS.
Once you have made sure it opens, proceed with upgrade.
Read upgrade guide for an specific upgrade procedure for 8i->10g.

You don't need a computer to activate a new iOS device anymore. Anything with iOS 5 can be activated over a WiFi network (or cellular if that applies).

my cd/dvd drive isn't working and i want to upgrade my mac os x10.5.8, how can i upgrade without the software CD

I think not.   You will need to order a disc from Apple quoting your serial number, as many of these discs are machine specific.   So unless you can get your drive working I think you will have to take a trip to an Apple store.
Indeed, you have an old computer that may not be worth the cost of repair ... but it is still worth seeking Apple advice and a visual inspection.   It just might be something not too drastic.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the MFSC2 without downtime

We have a cat 6500 running in hybrid mode. With two MFSC2 in high-availability mode. We currectly run on the MFSC2 IOS ver 12.1(22)E. We are going to upgrade to 12.1(23)E4. I was wondering can I do that without downtime using the following this procedure:
    1. place new IOS in bopotflasg of both MFSC2
    2. change the bootsystem command on the standby MFSC2
    3. reboot the standby MFSC2
    4. wait for full reboot and sync of standby MFSC2
    5. switch between active and standby MFSC2
    6. chnage boot system command on standby MFSC2
Would this work? Or is there an issue running two MFSC2s in HighAvaiol mode it the IOSsses aren't the same.

If the IOS versions are different on the two MSFCs, High Availability/SRM will break.
In short, a 'hitless' IOS upgrade is not possible.

  • I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

I strongly advise against upgrading the OS without first making a backup. Were something to go wrong you would lose all your files without the backup. See:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

I have Lightroom 4 and want to upgrade Lightroom 5 with a perpetual license, without buying creative cloud. Please how to do ? Thanks

Or wait a few weeks and get LR6, maybe?   We’re up to LR 5.7 and there’s never been a LR somethingxzxz.8 so it would make sense that the next version is a payfor upgrade, again, with some sort of improvements and new features over LR 5.  This suggestion assumes LR6 will be available as a perpetual license as an upgrade to LR 4, which I would expect, but you never know.

The latest version of iPhoto which can operation with OS X 10.4.11 is iPhoto 7 which is part of iLife 08.  You might be able to find a copy of iLIfe 08 on Amazon.com or Ebay.com.
iLife 08's full system requirements are:
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 processor
iMovie ’08 requires a Mac computer with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0 GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9 GHz or faster)
iDVD ’08 requires 733MHz or faster processor
512 MB of RAM; 1 GB recommended; high-definition video requires at least 1 GB of RAM
3 GB of available disk space

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase
Get a nice 1TB USB external HD for $65

  • I recently purchased an iMac with Maverick system. I want to know can I install my Photoshop CS5  on this computer then upgrade it to CS6 without a months charge in the cloud?

I recently purchased an iMac with Maverick system. I want to install my Photoshop CS5 on it, is that okay?
Then I want to update it to CS6 without the iCloud purchase monthly (don't want that, want a one time charge)???

As per System requirements | Photoshop, PS is not officially supported on Maverick and you might face several compatibility issues as well. However, we have many users who are still using CS5 on Mavericks. So, if you want you can give it a try and check it for your self.
As far as CS6 is concerned, you can get PS CS6 perpetual version easily from Adobe.com Creative Suite 6
    Hope that Helps!
