Want to upgrade my package!

Hi all,
Would be very greatful for some help!
We are with BT for broadband (op 1) and Phones (eve and weekend)
I have now called BT twice asking to upgrade our package to the £15.99 anytime plan with op 1 broadband and to pay the line rental saver in one payment.
On the first call, the advisor went through the terms and conditions, confirmed the price, spoke to the acc holder etc etc. Then said that his system had an error and wouldnt let him put it through, but that he would call me by the end of last week (which he didnt).
I phoned again today, to have the same process. The advisor read out the name of the plan and that it is a 12 month contract, then said he couldnt do it on his system and it was his guess that the system has a fault and to try again another time or to do it online.....it wont let me do it online, it doesnt display the package as an option!
The switch in packages would save us over £30 a month, and the new contract starts tomorrow for the phone (with the current package) I NEED to make a reduction in this cost hence why I called up almost 10 days ago to do just that, before I went into another contract.
Well folks, what can I do? How can I get my package changed? After the above conversations, can BT still come back to us and tell us that they cannot change us? If it does get changed to the plan we requested, can we ask for it to be backdated to the date we initially called? I presume both advisors would have to input details of my calls on some kind of record.
Many Thanks in advance,
Shosh

Hi Shosh,
Sounds like a spanner rattling around somewhere in system here.
Drop me an email to [email protected] and I'll get it straighted out and get the offer applied.
I'll need your BT account and telephone number and a link back to this thread please.
Cheers
Craig

Maybe disabling "testing" in /etc/pacman.conf is an option for you.  So Xorg (and other packages)  will be updated when it's in the stable repos...

  • How NOT to upgrade a package while pacman -Syu

This may sound confusing, but I am trying to keep my system up to date with the latest software, but I do not want to upgrade one package or else I am 110% sure I will break my system.
So when I run pacman -Syu, it tells me that I have 4 packages to upgrade, one being the package I do not want to update. So far the only way I found to upgrade my system but still keeping it unbroken is having to manually install all theremaing upgrades using
    pacman -S name_of_packages_that_need_to_be_upgraded.
which can be a long list (3 in this case), especially if I don't do it for awhile.
My question is, is there a way to stop pacman from trying to always upgrade the one package I do not want and upgrade all the rest just like its supposed to?
I have not found a way to do this, but I am not fluent enough with the package manager to know if there is a command for this task. If there isn't such a command, then how hard would it be to add this functionality? I know this kinda goes against the arch way, but so does manually upgrading each package individually. KISS
Any help would be appreciated and I can clearly understand if this can't be resolved.

I will add, I put this under the general options part of pacman.conf for anyone who is confused that is reading this. Great tip this one here is. One more question though? would u put multiple packages on one line or would u add a ignorpkg = for every package u don't want upgraded?

  • Upgrading ZFS packages (filesystems, tools, etc) without doing an OS upgrade

    Hi everyone,
Is there a way to upgrade all ZFS libs, binaries, etc without having to retort on a full-install or os upgrade ?
I'm running Solaris 10u5, I've read that many new features (esp. concerning snapshots) are available on 10u6. I can't put the server offline for much time and can't upgrade it to 10u6+ . I'd only need to upgrade all ZFS-related parts (... live, if possible !).
Is there a way to do this ?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

If you can find some spare disk space, you might want to look into liveupgrade to minimize your downtime. This might make it possible for you to upgrade. With liveupgrade, you should be able to keep your downtime to something a little bit longer than one or more reboots depending on the current state of your installation.
If you want to upgrade ZFS packages to get some of the newer features, like moving your / file system to ZFS, you probably can't just upgrade ZFS packages to get that functionality. A feature like that involves quite a bit of support outside of the ZFS packages.

It would all depend on if you were on a monthly contract or if you were on Pay & Go. Pay & Go would mean you would be basically paying for the cost of the iPhone upfront, whereas with a monthly contract you will either get a BIG discount on what you need to pay for the iPhone or if you were on a more expensive monthly package/tariff you may even get the iPhone for free.
    For example:
I have a iPhone 3GS which I got just over 2 weeks ago. I am on a £35 per month contract and I had to pay £180 for the iPhone, if I had got it on Pay & Go it would have cost me £580.

  • Huge Number of Deps when Upgrading KDE packages from 4.14 to 14.12

    Hi,
I know the KDE upgrade issue is "flavor of the day" at the moment and I have read other threads on it; but so far have not found info which applies to my situation.
Note: I only use a FEW KDE apps like Krusader, Yakuake, Konsole, Kcalc and do NOT use KDE the Desktop Environment (and have no desire to do so.)  In fact, I do not use any DE's, only Openbox and i3WM as Window Managers, preferring a minimalistic approach, IOW, "less is more".
Since a day or two (since the KDE 4.14 to 14.12 came out), I am facing the following when trying to do a full system upgrade:

I have looked at almost all of the packages listed above and I currently only have a few of those installed. I can recognize the obvious ones I use (Krusader, Konsole, Gwenview and a few others) and their current deps.  When I do a pacman -Qs on each of the above packages/deps, most of them are NOT currently installed.
Trying to keep my system light, with no unnecessary packages, I fail to see why I would need packages such as kcrash, kbookmarks, kconfigwidgets, kemoticons, knotifications, kwallet (I definitely do NOT use kwallet).
When I look at the Net Upgrade Size of +172.52 MiB, again, I fail to see WHY I would need to load my system up with all of these packages--unless absolutely necessary.  But why would running the SAME apps as before, just upgrading them, require an extra 172+ MiB?  That does NOT seem right at all.  Granted, some of these MiB's are allocated to the other packages at end of list such as mesa, etc.; but most of the 172+ MiB's are most likely allocated to the KDE-related packages.
    1) Short-term
I have tried to Ignore the packages in pacman.conf by adding "kde kdegraphics kdebase kdenetwork kf5 plasma-next" to the IgnoreGroup and "yakuake oxygen-icons kdebase-lib kdebase-runtime" to the IgnorePkg but that is not enough since there are some packages which do not belong to any group so I would need to hunt them down one by one, etc.  And this does not seem to be the right approach, in any event.
    2) Long-term
I do want to upgrade the applications which I DO use, such as Krusader, Konsole, etc.; so it would seem I need to resolve this issue.
For further info, if I change the replies on the choices pacman offers on upgrading, this is what I get (which is probably normal):
    % pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date
    community is up to date
    multilib is up to date

warning: opera: ignoring package upgrade (12.16.1860-2 => 26.0.1656.60-1)
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for conflicting packages...
    :: konsolepart4 and kdebase-konsole are in conflict. Remove kdebase-konsole? [y/N] n
    error: unresolvable package conflicts detected
error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
    :: konsolepart4 and kdebase-konsole are in conflict (kdebase-konsole<4.14.3-4)
So, what am I missing?  Just a few brain cells, i.e. the apps I have (in their updated versions) actually DO need all of the deps listed?  (This really makes no sense to me.)
Or is there a problem with the required dependencies?
    Thanks for any helpful feedback.

Well, If you are correct (and you probably are), with all due respect to KDE users/developers, IMHO this just confirms the trend towards "bloat".....
Again, I see no reason whatsoever to have to install kwallet (for example) when I'm just not using it, etc.
This just makes me want to uninstall those apps altogether or, probably better, just stop at the versions I currently have and prevent them from upgrading, as a temporary solution.
I might be able to switch to other smaller/lighter apps, over time--which will probably have less features, though, but can't always have your cake and eat it too, I suppose.
What is the best way for me to prevent this upgrade of all kde-related apps from 4.14 to higher versions?
I mentioned in my original post which groups and packages I tried adding to pacman.conf IgnoreGroup and IgnorePkg but I am obviously missing something.
Any suggestions as to how to properly stop from upgrading?
This is where I am right now, for pacman.conf
    IgnorePkg = netcfg cups libcups compton-conf-git caps opera yakuake oxygen-icons kdebase-lib kdebase-runtime kdebase-konsole kdegraphics-gwenview kdebase-katepart kdelibs kdepimlibs libkdcraw libkipi libkomparediff2
    IgnoreGroup = kde kdegraphics kdebase kdenetwork kf5 kf5-aids plasma-next

There is no upgrade path from a suite to an individual product.
You can buy InDesign CS6 for $700 or you can subscribe to InDesign CC for $20/month.
Your CS5 license also is good for one year intro rate of $29.99/month for the entire Creative Cloud package.

If you already have Firefox 3.0.4 installed, you must have updated the GTK package that came with the Xandros Operating System on the early EeePC's. You should be able to install Firefox 3.6.x, but I doubt if the latest Firefox 4 version will work. <br />

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FirefoxNewVersion/MozillaBuilds
You should visit the EeeUser forum - http://forum.eeeuser.com/ - and ask them what you should do.
I have a EeePC 900 20GB. When I updated to Firefox 3 on the old Xandros OS it was very slow. When I installed Firefox 3.6 is slowed down even more, and I gave up with Xandros. I installed EasyPeasy - http://www.geteasypeasy.com/ - a distro made from Ubuntu. But that may not work for you, if you haven't installed a larger SSD (solid state drive) - AFAIK, the 700 models came with a 2GB or 4GB SSD and EasyPeasy filled my 4GB SSD almost immediately.

This is what I do; however, I noticed, if you have duplicate entries (packages), pacman will not prompt you about dependencies being too old (i.e. lower packages version number than required being present on your own repo), it will just say it cannot install package X due to unresolved dependencies Y and Z .
To make it more concrete: I have slimmer builds of nautilus & nautilus-cd-burner on my own repo, but use the sound-juicer package from extra. Pacman would not upgrade nautilus & nautilus-cd-burner with those available in extra, it just complained about unresolved dependencies for sound-juicer.
Which, of course, is another problem, but I just wanted to point that out .

  • [SOLVED] Pacman wont upgrade any packages

EDIT: I was able to solve my problem by pacman -R yaourt package-query pacman-color, I was then able to update pacman. Since I like yaourt and wanted to keep it I follow the instructions on their page (http://archlinux.fr/yaourt-en#get_it). I added their repo to my /etc/pacman.conf and then installed yaourt from pacman and now everything works again like it should.
When I try to upgrade packages I get the following errors:
    [jason@barnaby ~]$ sudo pacman -Su

    pacman

I tried to uninstall packagekit and failed, then I tried to install packagekit-git and that failed too.
    [jason@barnaby ~]$ sudo pacman -R packagekit

I assume this should be git-repository=0.6.6 Also I can find this package on Pacman or AUR

This is obsolete dependency connected with gobject-introspection support. I think it can be removed without any problems. :)

  • What All Do I Need If I Want To Upgrade My Macbook Hard Drive?

    hey guys.
i've tried reading up a little but i was hoping someone (or a few people) could give me some straight up answers.
if i want to upgrade my macbook hard drive what all do i need? just the hard drive? or are there other pieces?
also.. whats a good 250GB one? i found this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2-5-Western-Digital-250GB-SATA-Harddrive_W0QQitemZ220271 134397QQihZ012QQcategoryZ158853QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
is that one any good? i just know the name (Western Digital) and have heard good things about them...
    any comments are welcome.
    thanks!
    beau

I got a 320GB sata 2.5" hard drive and installed it myself, its easy. I also got a caddy so I can use my old 120GB drive as a back up. Make sure u have everything backed up! Seagate and western digital drives are most popular. I asked similar q and got this answer"
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
If your backup is bootable, then boot from the external drive and use SuperDuper to clone it back to the newly installed drive.

    And

  • Getting a larger hard drive...and want to upgrade to Tiger...help!

    Hello everyone!
I have a dualie MDD with the stock 60 gig hard drive that I want to upgrade. I'd like a 200 or 250 gig hard drive.
Once I have the new hard drive installed, I'd like to upgrade to Tiger. But I'm lost as to how this process works. I know I'd need to clone my current OS, but then how do I clone it to the new drive once it's installed?
    Would I:
    1) Back my system up onto CD/DVDs/external drive/whatever
    2) Create clone of system using CCC or Disk Utilities
    3) Install new drive??
    4) ???
    5) Upgrade to Tiger??
I'm not sure if two drives running so close to each other inside the hard drive cage is a wise move considering how hot the inside of an MDD gets, so I may remove the 60 once everything is up and running.
So how do I go about this the right way? Detailed instructions would be very appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi, Pat!
First of all, get the new drive and install it. (Insure you buy an ATA drive and not a SATA drive.) If you need any assistance with installing, configuring, or initializing the drive, please post back.
In the interim, check for updates to your third-party apps to make sure that they will all be up-to-date and Tiger-compatible. Download a free copy of Superduper! or CarbonCopyCloner to later clone your startup drive. You can also use Disk Utility's Restore option for cloning, if you'd rather do so.
Next, you have a decision to make about the Tiger install. You can either upgrade it from Panther on your current drive, or do a fresh install of Tiger and use the Setup Assistant to incorporate your data from the Panther volume. I prefer and would recommend the latter as a much "cleaner" way of upgrading, leaving less "baggage" from the older OS. I would install Tiger directly to the new drive, which precludes the immediate need to clone anything while still leaving the original startup drive and system intact. If you'd rather do the upgrade install, then you should clone the Panther volume to the new drive, check the clone to insure it's okay, and install Tiger over Panther onto one drive or the other.
After installing Tiger, doing the software updates, moving your user files, apps etc. to the Tiger volume, you can run and test it for a week or so to insure all is well and that you have everything you need from the Panther drive. Once you're satisfied, you can then either retain the Panther volume as-is, using it as an alternate startup drive, or (preferably) you can instead erase it, zero it, and clone a copy of your Tiger volume to it as a backup and alternate startup drive.
Feel free to post back with any questions or concerns and one or more of the members will gladly address them.
