Want to upgrade to Tiger OS X 10.4 but only have a CD drive

From my understanding, the Tiger install requires a DVD drive - is this correct and is there a simple, economical way around this? I believe I need to upgrade to Tiger so I can use iTunes and eliminate some other compatibility problems - is this true or not? Please help.

Thanks Jim - did your dad upgrade from OS X 10.2 and if so, were there any issues with the upgrade? My machine has 384MB RAM - do you think this is sufficient for running Tiger? My main areas of usage are the internet, word, excel, itunes, and some language programs (rosetta stone, linkword) Any light you can shed before I make the leap would be great - thanks.
Yes, he was upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3. I did a straight 'upgrade' rather than an 'archive & install' or 'erase & install' and it all went perfectly (although the iMac had a fresh install of 10.2 just a couple of months before).
I can confirm that the apps. you mention - word (2004), excel (2004), iTunes, Rosetta Stone - run fine under Panther (10.3) as those are also ones he uses (I believe Office 2008 requires at least Tiger though). He has 512MB RAM installed.
As for Tiger, as I said, I haven't upgraded him yet but it runs well on my G3 iBook, but it does have 640MB RAM.
Apple's system requirements state "At least 256 MB of RAM" so you may be OK with 384MB RAM - if it was me I'd prefer to have at least 512MB RAM, and the more RAM you have the better Tiger will run and the better experience you'll have.
System requirments for Panther are "a minimum of 128MB of memory" so you may be better going for that if you don't want to buy more RAM. Even so, it's still a good investment to buy more RAM whatever OS you use.

I want to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard but I'll be buying a new Apple computer to
    do that..
I presently have a a 10.4 iMAC with only 2.33 GB of memory and I'm getting a new puter
in order to have 4 GB. Is it recommended to use Lion with a new Apple computer or can I use
Snow Leopard without missing out on anything? Are the stories about Lion just the usual thing
that always happens with a new upgrade? Tiger has worked perfectly for me for 6 years but that
has been on computer that is 6 years old. (POWERPC) Does a new iMAC computer with intel
require the latest operating system to work at top efficiency? Is my apprehension about Lion
an over reaction to anecdotal info?

Some of this is answered best by knowing what model computers are involved. If you are truly getting a brand new (as opposed to a newer used) computer then it will likely come with Lion installed, unless there's some old stock (which even then would have Lion installed but could still run under Snow Leopard which you would have to buy separately).  Macs will normally only run the version system that comes installed, or newer, so if you are getting a brand new Mac you won't have any choice but to run Lion (or its successors). It won't run Snow Leopard unless it is a new used computer.
As for Lion stories, those would best be answered on the Lion forum. I still run Tiger which I why I'm on this forum.  There's always issues with any upgrade.  For me the biggest drawback to Lion is all my software is PPC generation and Lion stopped supporting PPC completely. If I got a brand new computer I would also have to upgrade all my software which could easily run to over a thousand dollars more.

#1 Do a complete bootable backup of your drive before upgrading. That way should anything happen you can revert back to the start and try again.
Make sure you meet Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575

I think you mean you are replacing your Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule. Time Machine is software integrated into OS X 10.5 & 10.6 used to automatically backup a system to an external HD. Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme that has a hard disk integrated into it that can be used for storage or  as a Time Machine backup drive.
Because you are currently on Tiger 10.4.x you can backup to a external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Having a backup is very wise before doing any major system update. After  you have created the backup and have successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard you can still use the external HD for many things. The strategy I'd recommend is to use the new Time Capsule as your Time Machine backup and then use the external HD as backup using SuperDuper or CCC. Redundant backups is wise because backups can (and do) fail too! In addition both SD and CCC are bootable clones, this is useful in that if your internal HD crashes you can boot from a cloned drive and continue working until the internal HD is replaced.
Below are some links to some articles from MacWorld, I would recommend reading them where you find a common theme, redundant backups. Backup Plan I, Backup Plan II & Backup Plan III.

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

If your iPad has no front or back cameras, then you have an original iPad 1.
The original iPad 1 cannot be upgraded any further than iOS 5.1.1.
    Sorry.

The original serial number should be in the box with the installer disk.
If you cannot locate the serial number, contact Apple for a replacement serial number. You will need to provide a proof of purchase.
See: Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers

P.S. The menu command "Aperture > About Aperture" will show you your Aperture 3 serial number on your old mac, but not the previous serial numbers.

  • Purch. & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..

    Hi ~
_Purchased & installed upgrade from iLife 2 to iLife 08, but I have questions..._
First I made sure I backed up my 5,500 photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive. (The only downfall to this backing-up process is that I haven't found an easy way to back-up the comments attached to each photo. Any advice on this? Part of the "horror" to losing one's photos is also losing the comments added to them over the years.)
Back to the install... I installed iLife 08 and it installed correctly. I checked to see what version of the applications I have in the dock on my desktop - I figured it would just import existing data (photos, tunes, etc.) into the newer version and replace it in the dock - +it only did this for iDVD+, of course it wasn't that easy for the others.
I can't find the newer version of iPhoto. My iPhoto in the dock still says version 2. iTunes in my dock is version 7 (7.4.2). iMovie is version 3 (3.0.3). But the new Garageband is there in the dock. And of course, iDVD is the newer version '08.
I am most concerned with iPhoto and making sure all the photos AND their comments import correctly into the newer iPhoto 08. I am nervous about this so I want to make sure I do the process correctly.
I also want to make sure my iTunes information imports correctly to the newer version as well.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Kathy

If you backed up the iPhoto Library Folder then you got everything - photos, albums, comments etc

The Dock is not important. Look in your Applications Folder for iPhoto 08. That's where it should be. The Dock is just a shortcut to that. What version is in your Apps folder?
To upgrade a Library from v2 to iPhoto 08 all you do is open the Library with the newer version.

Be aware, you go that route & every time you try to update or restore, it will error out, leaving your phone unusable. Not to mention, you void all warranty/support.
Sell it & use the proceeds towards an officially unlocked iPhone bought directly from Apple.
    Good luck.

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.
