Wanted: a fake Desktop

I'm setting up an iMac that will have three partitions:
OSX 10.6.8
OSX 10.8
Data
Fine by me, but my partner who will be using it a lot of the time, doesn't like storing her stuff inside that funny-looking-gray-thing on her Desktop called "Data". She's likes her stuff spread all over the Desktop – and nowhere else. I've got a story about that: whenever I am game enough to venture onto her laptop (usually in response to her asking me to fix something), the first thing I do is View > Clean Up. And just like a bowerbird whose collection of blue items has been messed up, when next she visits her Desktop she puts everything back just the way it was. i.e. a mess (yet if I dare leave a magazine laying around in the lounge room…)
Anyway, now for various reasons* her stuff will have to be stored on the Data partition. So, is there a way of storing files on a partition, but make those files appear as if they are on a Desktop?
* Files will be stored on Data and backed up on another drive. I expect to erase the OSX partitions every now and then and would rather avoid having to worry about Desktop files being backed up and archived. On my own computer, none of my files are ever stored on the OSX partition.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Since it appears that I can't set up a real* Fake-Desktop (looks exactly like a Desktop but files are stored elsewhere), I've decided to try out a fake Fake-Desktop (FFD, looks similar to a real Desktop).
Name the folder (or volume) where files are to be stored: Desktop.
Make it fit the whole window and set to Icon view.
From View, hide all the bars (Status, Tool, Path, Sidebar)
Use Show View Options to set the background.
To force this window to open at login (just in case it is closed accidentally) use System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items
Voila – an FFD. Looks a bit weird to me, knowing that it covers the real Desktop and that instant access to disks and bars is lost, but Jenny almost never uses those things anyway. If I can't convince her to get more serious about using folders and hard drives, I'll see how she goes with an FFD.
*Talking about real Fake items reminds me of my time in Singapore in the 1980s when the touts in Orchard Rd would pester me about copy watches: "You want buy copy watch?". So I'd look at their wares for a minute or so before declaring: "Hey, this isn't a real copy watch. This says Rolex! I want one that says Copy Watch". Our little interaction would usually end with them rather annoyed and telling me something like: "You stupid!" That particular tout wouldn't bother me again.

    I want replace my desktop with a iPad to do emails and Microsoft office work. Can this be effectively done? What's the downside if any?

    I'll go down your list one by one.
    1. Access mail - which I know that the iPad can do.
    Enough said.
    2. Save an excel or word or ppt of PDF attachment for review.
    You can view these types of documents natively on the iPad as Tgara has mentioned.
    3. Open an review and maybe change a excel or word file.
    There are many apps that allow this.  I personally prefer Apples iWork programs, Pages, Numbers, Keynote.  They tightly integrate with iCloud.
    4. Resave such above files.
    With Pages, Number, Keynote you can save/resave files in iCloud and locally.  Also you could use dropbox to save your files on dropbox and provide a way for you to share a folder with coworkers/family and they can add/view/review files from there and you can see the changes on your device.
    5. Reply to a mail attaching a file.
    This is possible in many ways.  From dropbox, or another app you can email files with the share button.
    6. Be able to rename files and store them in specific folders.
    This goes back to dropbox/iCloud.  iOS doesn't really have a traditional file system.  If you save a PDF it isn't saved anywhere you can just open it.  You would have to open an app that supports view PDFs and select the PDF you wish to view.  The same goes for documents, spreadsheets and etc.
    Hopefully this helps answer your questions.

  • I want to get desktop path for client user using webutil

    oracle database 11g
    oracle forms 10 g
    client windows
    i want to get desktop path for client user using webutil
    as i want to save file in this path

    To get the user's path to their Desktop is a two step process.  First, you have to echo the %USERPROFILE% to a output file and secondly, read the directory from the output file in to Forms.  The code would look similar to the following:
    /* When-Button-Pressed trigger */
    DECLARE
      v_temp_path VARCHAR2(250);
      v_temp_file VARCHAR2(12) := 'webutil.log';
      f_file Client_Text_IO.File_Type;
    BEGIN
      Client_Host('cmd /c echo %USERPROFILE%\Desktop > c:\'||v_temp_file);
      f_file := Client_Text_Io.FOpen('c:\'||v_temp_file, 'R');
    Client_Text_Io.Get_Line(f_file,v_temp_path);
    Client_Text_Io.FClose(f_file);
       b_dummy := WebUtil_File.Delete_File('C:\'||v_temp_file);
      --At this point, you have the path stored in the v_temp_path variable.
      --You can assign this variable to a block item or reference it directly in your code.
    END;
    When you reference the value of the v_temp_path, don't forget to wrap the value in double-quotes (" ") becuase the path will have spaces.  Since your plan is to write a file to the user's desktop, your call to FOPEN will look  like this:
    f_file := Client_Text_Io.FOpen('"'||v_temp_file||'"','W');
    Hope this helps,

  • I downloaded an adobe update, now the stuff I download from e-mails that I want on my desktop

    I downloaded an update from Adobe. Now when I get an e-mail, like an offer or counter offer and I want it to download to my desktop, it won't do it.  It puts it somewhere else! very frustating.  All my PDF files now have changed to Adobe.  How do I put stuff back the way I had it.  I should have never downloaded the update. What is your operating system?  What is your email client?  What is your Reader version?
    What do you want to place on your desktop, the email message, or the attachment?

    Sorry, I have no idea what that means.

  • I want to remote desktop connect via Bluetooth

    I have two laptops on a little pan network. I can share folders and files between them. But I additionaly want to be able to establish a remote desktop connection between the two laptops. I'm not having too much success here. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you.
    Oh - XP Professional SP3. Toshiba BlueTooth Stack which hasnt been upgraded.
    Thanks again.

    I use remote desktop access - mstsc.exe - to remote all my servers at work.
    So I have my PAN at home on two XP Pro SP3 laptops w/ internal bluetooth. I run mstsc.exe and cannot see my other computer across the PAN. I can share folders without issue. Both laptops are in the same workgroup but mstsc.exe fails.
    I'm missing something.
    Ahhhh. Figured it out. The remote desktop access network configuration is in it's options. The computer field has a drop down menu, I was expecting it to populate being a drop down menu. But there were no menu items listed. That throw me off. But I just typed my other computer's name in the field and it connected me to the log in screen and my other comuter is now listed in the drop-down menu. That how its done.
    It's slow though. But I knew that.

  • Want to access desktop pc Itunes library from laptop pc

    Hi,
    I have my Itunes library on my desktop pc, on a dedicated user disk.  I have mapped the disk to my laptop and can see all user disk folders and files on my laptop (wireless).  I want to be able to manage the desktop Itunes it from my laptop but can't seem to do it.  When I go to advanced in my laptop Itunes and enter the desktop Itunes as the default file, it accepts the location but the Itunes library does not chamge.  Any ideas?  I do not want to do Home Sharing, I want to access the desktop library just as if it was on my laptop.  I was able to do this befor but had to reinstall Itunes on my laptop and now accessing the desktop library no longer works.
    Thanks,
    George

    There are a few things you could do, from networking the two computers to using an external hard drive. Have a look at this User Tip: Migrating iTunes for Windows to a new PC
    If you can network the computers there is also this one: Copying songs over a network to use with iTunes for Windows
    There are also a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists directly from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • I can no longer drag and drop a website onto my desktop.  NOW I have to go through hoops to get anything I want onto my desktop !  this *****

    I had Leopard.  I jumped to Mountain Lion.  Sorry sorry sorry I did.   Many things are stupidly difficult to do, minor tasks, that once were EASY.
    I USED to be able to go onto a website, then DRAG AND DROP the ICON from it ONTO my desktop.  NO MORE.   Frankly, there is NOW no easy way that I've found ..........May I also say, Mountain Lion is one horrendous piece of ........##@@!!!.   I gave my old iMac to a friend after upgrading it for her...with Mountain Lion.   I wish to God I'd not tormented her with that OSX.  I wish to God I'd not tormented myself with it on my own iMac.
    Someone tell me......there MUST be an easy way to Drag/drop a website to my desktop for regular use???  IF NOT, we have YET another glitch on this stupid OSX.
    I have 10.8.2.  2.5GHz Intel Core i5  4GB  21.5 screen  (2011)

    I realize my post made me appear UNcalm.  Sorry.  I am rather irritated by this and have been.
    When I now go to any website, I can only go on it by clicking FULL page.  In other words, I can get to it by 2 ways, by putting it into the "google" bar, or by FULL screening to type in http....www....etc.
    I am then in Full screen to access any website.  THEN,   I can no longer drag/drop the website's Icon to my desktop.......If I diminish, I lose the website.  It may bring up the same site, but will not let me drag the site's icon ONTO my desktop to use in the future.
    That seems to have disappeared with Mountain Lion.  I was able to do it with ease on Leopard.
    Repeat:
    In Leopard, I would go to a website and could drag that website's icon ONTO my desktop.  Period.
    I am no longer able to do this with Mountain Lion.
    If I try to drag anything, NOTHING happens OTHER than it replicates the page...it does not place an icon on my desktop to use in the future.
    I am CALM.  I AM frustrated.

  • Fake desktop (so I can store information in it)?

    Hi All,
    I'd really like to have a desktop like space (maybe one that I can toggle to somehow) where I can store current projects that I am working on. I find it really a bump in the road to have to look at these in a normal Finder window.
    At the same time about a year into moving to mac, I realized that my MacPro slows to a crawl (literally) when I put too much data on the desktop.
    Is there a really easy way to do this? If it involves Expose or Spaces can anyone point me to a down and dirty explanation to get this going?
    Thanks
    Jonathan

    Hi Thomas.
    Thanks for the help.
    Can you help me with what you mean by too many open windows? I'm coming from a PC environment and my MacPro has in the past "churned" (the hard drive sounds like it is being read) and I think I finally isolated this to folders on the desktop with a large amount of information.
    You are saying that the /amount/ of information or the amount of files in a folder on the desktop is not an issue it is the /number/ of folders - because these are open windows?
    What is the issue with open windows on Mac?
    Also, does this also apply to open software? I mean, at what point do I start to think about closing software? Say I have Pages, Numbers, Safari and four or five other software open. Is this an issue?
    Lastly, I have a hard time understanding how this all works. Can you explain it a little more? I can't figure out if you are talking just plain old Finder windows here or if you are using something special. "Project based folders that can be open in each relevant space..."? What is the relevant space? I'm a little confused on how to rethink all this...
    but you may also wish to have project-based folders that can be open in each relevant space so that items for the project you're working on are all filed away in the right place as you work on them. My personal work style usually involves two windows in column view, tiled one above the other. This allows very quick access to what I need as well as access to one side of the desktop for a short-term repository for things that are temporary or that I haven't figured out where to file.
    Thanks again...

  • PS CS5 Display Question. Don't want to see desktop.

    Just loaded CS5 onto my Mac and I am noticing that when I open CS5, I can still see my desktop and other applications that may be open. I have always used PS on Windows and when it was opened, it would just have a gray background. Is it possible to make this happen on a mac with CS5? Thanks.

    NM. I figured it out. Should have looked at FAQ first.

  • Want a nice desktop ruler? Try PMeter via Wine

    I'm afraid the native Linux desktop rulers I've tried have been very disappointing compared to their Windows siblings. PMeter is one of the best I have found, available from http://www.pegtop.net/pmeter, and it works great via Wine, including System Tray functionality and it has a magnifier thrown in for good measure too!

    Ok, in the meantime I have set up a 32bit chroot environment, and used yaourt inside of it to build the glc-git package. I copied and installed it via pacman -U in my 64bit environment.
    I also had to install lib32-libpng, and after that, it worked!
    it still throws errors:
    ERROR: ld.so: object 'libglc-hook.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
    ERROR: ld.so: object 'libglc-hook.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
    but only two times instead of nine, and its capturing just fine.
    here's the compiled package, if anyone needs it:

    Sorry for bumping an old thread but thanks very much for this works perfect on 64bit Arch.

  • System Preference freezes when I want to change desktop background picture

    My system preference freezes when I try to change my desktop background picture, any help, I tried disk utility repair, couldn't find the files to trash.

    Login to the problematic account ensure that System Preferences is closed down.  Move the following file to trash:
    <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
    but don't delete it from the trash yet, just in case you need to restore it.  Re-open System Preferences, it will re-create the file.  If all's well then, then you can empty the trash.

  • I want some KDE apps, but not the KDE desktop environment....

    I'm on a laptop running Arch (yay!) and I am wanting to install Amarok and KTorrent. However, I don't want the KDE desktop environment, KWin (I use fluxbox), or things like KDM (I use SLiM). Is there a package, like kde-base in Debian, that allows just essential Qt/KDE libraries for applications like Amarok and KTorrent?
    Thanks in advance.

    Assuming you have it installed,
    $ kcontrol
    or you can use kcmshell with the name of the options module you want to use, eg:
    $ kcmshell style
    to change the GUI theme.

  • Sounds simple...Maybe it is.  I want only one icon on my desktop..

    All I want is the "Computer" icon on my destop. Finder refuses to allow me to put one there. Is there any way around this seemingly unnecessary block?

    You can have whatever you want on your Desktop. Go to Finder prefs and turn off everything you don't want to see on your Desktop. Now put an alias for anything you do want. I have aliases to the startup drive, my data drive, my Panther drive (still lots of stuff there I want to consult regularly) and my home folder. I do not see the iBook's backup drive nor the original drive with 10.1.5 and a lot of old stuff. One bonus is that you can arrange them however you want and they STAY that way.
    If you want to access Computer from the Desktop you don't need an icon at all. In Finder prefs select New Finder windows: Computer. Then just click on the Finder icon in the Dock and it opens Computer. That's how I get to the volumes I don't keep on the Desktop on those rare occasions I want something on them.
