Wanted: A Few Study Buddies

Hello,
I'd like to take the SCJP 1.4 on January 13th. I've worked my way through most of the Sybex Complete Java 2 Certification Guide (Programmer's Exam), and this morning I purchased the WhizLabs 1.4 mock exam simulator.
See: http://www.whizlabs.com/scjp/scjp-1.4.html
It costs $39.95 and they have a money-back guarantee: if you don't pass the SCJP, they refund your money. After taking the assessment test (there are over ten other tests, for a total of over 600 questions) and talking with some friends who have taken the SCJP, it appears that if you can do the WhizLabs tests, you'll do great on the actual SCJP.
If you're comfortable with Java and want to get certified in a hurry, I'd like to invite you to help a small group of us study for the next two weeks, every night, on IRC. To do this, you'd need to buy the WhizLabs SCJP simulator (it generates a machine-specific key so it's impossible to share), or at least bring sample questions from free mock tests to our jam sessions so that we can clarify confusing points and improve our skills.
My hope is that certification will help a bit in this incredibly tight job market, but beyond that, so far, studying for the SCJP has been a great way to learn things about the language that I might not otherwise have found out about for a very long time. It forces you to take a disciplined and systematic approach and is hopefully a good starting point for the SCWCD and SCJD (study for one of which will begin on
January 14th ;-) ).
If you'd like to be part of the group and have the stamina to study a LOT (eat, sleep, breathe Java) over the next two weeks, please give me a holler in e-mail. I'm going to e-mail everyone who is interested tonight with the details, once we know how many people we'll have.
Also, for those of you who are interested, I'm the lead for the Skribe Open Source web journaling application currently under development. If you're interested in working on a very cool project, please have a look at http://dev.noumenaut.com. Also, since we have a forum dedicated to SCJP study, if you're interested in being study buddies, please go ahead and sign up so that you can access the forum and we have a common place in which to post messages, in addition to being able to have nightly jam sessions on IRC.
Thanks Very Much!

"and want to get certified in a hurry"
Remember to tell that to all potential employers as they'll learn to appreciate the SCJP even more.

  • Bought a whole album and I only wanted a few songs and now all songs from album are on my phone but not my mac

Okay so today one of my friends used my phone to sign in to his Apple I.D I don't know why? Anyway...once he logged off there was a whole album I bought and I only wanted a few songs from that album and deleted the songs I didn't want but somehow those songs I deleted from the album showed up on my Music on my iPhone but not my Mac. I tried to download it so I could delete it but it says in 90 days you can use another Apple I.D to download songs. Is there a way I can delete the songs I don't want from that album but keep the songs I want? Help?

The music sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The only exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
The iphone is not a backup device.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • Wiped my harddrive clean, only want a few files, not entire system

    Hey all,
I wiped my drive clean and reinstalled osx. I have the time machine harddrive from my previous osx. I really just want to retrieve a few folders and individual files, not entirely restore the system to what it was. Any way to make time machine pick up where it left off in terms of backups?

no. this is a new install and it will make a full new backup. no way around that.

  • ITunes Match subscribed, but I want a few more songs on my iPhone...

So I have a few songs recorded by a friend at 64kbps. iTM does not allow uploading of music recorded at less than 96kbps. Thus, I am stuck without these songs on my iPhone or iPad. Is there no way to sync some songs onto these devices "Manually" while still allowing them to access the rest of my 13,000 songs that are in iCloud? iAnnoyed at the moment, as I need to listen to these recordings for musical rehearsal purposes...

There is a work-around that will let you get low bitrate tracks to become eligible for iTunes Match. Use iTunes to make an AAC copy of your 64kbps songs, then select Update iTunes Match.  The copies will upload.

  • Optical Flow is analyzing the whole 5000 frame clip, i just want a few.

i spliced a clip in motion from a 5000 frame clip down to 250 frames. but when i click on the optical flow to 50 percent it analyze the whole 5000 frames. How do i just analyze the frames i picked out?
I would save me a load of time
    thank you

 Certified is right - the reason for this is that you can change the ins/outs on the fly in Motion, so it analyses the entire clip.
Exporting a QuickTime from FCP - even a reference movie - and bringing it back in and sending that to Motion is the generally accepted workaround...

  • How do I transfer a few songs from old library without bringing the entire old library to the new one?

I am trying to condense my itunes library from a desktop to a laptop. I only want a few songs from my original library so I can have more room on my ipod, I turned on home sharing so I could import the songs i wanted. then once I imported the select songs and synced my ipod, the entirety of my old library stayed and everything else went on.
itunes is saying that I have about 14.20 GB but my ipod says I only have 1.1 GB left....
    please help! thanks!

    Here are the screenshots.
Importing is bringing (in this case) a song from a library and bringing it into another library.

  • Hi, I'm considering gettting a mac book pro. I've been a pc user. I want to know anyone's opinion on the mac book pro compared to a pc.

I'm considering buying a mac book pro. I want a few opinions about the mac book pro compared to a pc. I've been a pc user. How do you rate the mac compared to a pc?

With Mac's, there are less software and hardware choices, Apple almost demands you upgrade the operating system (paid) annually now, then inflicts all sorts of unexpected UI changes etc., and breaks your third party software/hardware.
With Windows you might have malware, but on Mac's the pain comes with constant OS X upgrades and bricking of third party software, it's like Apple has no stability.
DRM is becoming standard issue, you can't install OS X on your own via the disks, it has to be downloaded from Apple now.
OS X is turning into iOS that's all controlling, all Apps are copy protected, open source software is not allowed.
Hardware quality is mixed now, 13" and below have cheap low res glossy screens like any other $400 Walmart PC, the 15" and up high res anti-glare are very nice models.
OS X is just a paint job on hardware with Apple "oh a new OS!", it's not a stable long term operating system in the sense that Windows versions are which you can set it up, make a backup and go on nearly forever.
At least with Windows one can reinstall the OS and get updates for 10+ years, all one has to do is buy quality long lasting hardware from a huge choice of vendors.
So value wise, hardware and software choice, 3D gaming, business world, standardization etc., Windows 7 is pretty sweet now. Vista and XP of course were terrible.
Apple's OS X Lion is terrible, it's the beginning of the end, a transition to locked down iOS X on Mac's and Apple's exit from the "computing" market into something only for consumers only really based on the closed iOS concept. They are really going overboard on this, pushing the App Store in your face when you do searches and everything.
The "candy like" OS X interface gets kind of tiring, it used to be we could avoid a lot of it, but now Apple is pressing it more into one's faces.  So forget having a professional or mature look about OS X anymore.
The App Store is like something made and to appeal to children and Toy Story cartoon watchers, not appealing to mature serious people.
OS X is pretty and all, the high quality screens of Mac's make OS X look nice and attractive, but I also run Windows 7 on my Mac and it looks just as great, Windows also has a more mature looking UI.
All in all there is really no advantage to getting a Mac over a PC anymore, since with Win 7 Microsoft provides the free Security Essentials and System Restore to make disks and images to restore one's own machine themselves easy as pie.
I'm a long time Mac user, from day one, because Mac's were innovative and more secure than Windows, however Apple has tarnished that image when I found out they were not issuing security updates for older OS X versions and not fast enough for Java, (they control) which resulted in a 600,000 botnet of Mac's called Flashflake.
Sure finally Apple issued a security update for 10.5 users, but on Intel processors only, not the zillions still on PowerPC processor Mac's.
Apple is so much about change to sell hardware that they burn bridges behind them, hopefully that will change now under Tim Cook's rule, (Steve Jobs died) I suspect it will.
Apple's OS X market share has been decreasing, not because Apple isn't selling things, but rather a larger portion of it's users are now using iOS devices instead of Mac's.
Before iOS arrived, it was 10% of users on OS X/Macs, now it's 4% iOS and 6% on OS X/Macs as recorded outside of China's Great Firewall.
I guess the positive thing is, I've only got one piece of malware on my Mac's in 24 years, however I've spent about 10x more for my computers over the years than my PC using friends have because of all the Apple hardware and OS X changes draining my wallet.
For instance they changed video out from DVI to Dual DVI, to Displayport to something else and now Thunderbolt, it's just insane you can't go back into a Apple store and pickup a piece of hardware anymore or older OS X, they start pumping you to change this or that and don't tell you what's it's really going to cost in the end to upgrade everything.
I swear they want us to turn over our machines every two years now like a iPhone or something.
If your a smart PC user, you know then what hardware to buy and how to reinstall Windows yourself, I don't see why you would give up so much hardware and software choice to use a locked down, DRMed Mac that's designed for newbies and children mostly and exiting the "pro" type market more and more every year.
If you think my compaints about Apple above pale in comparison to your experience with Windows 7, then by all means get a Mac, bring a fat wallet and they will be all over you like any high end fashion or Gucci store would.

  • Can I view a buddies screen in ichat

I want to view my buddies (my mum) screen so I can help her with her new iMac?

    Hi,
    The simple answer is yes.
    The full answer is-:
    iChat to iChat only.
Set router to allow UPnP (or Port Mapping Protocol on Base Stations)  (iChat uses a random port that you can't open any other way)
Need at least iChat 4 at both ends and an Upload speed of over 128kbps  (256kbps is a much more realistic real world figure)
You have to Enable Screen Sharing in the iChat Video menu.

  • I want to redesgin my company network

    Hi
Currently we 180 users in my company headoffice. And we have three branch offices on VPN.
My current network design for headofffice is a follows
                                            ISP------------------------>Router--------------->Pix firewall---------------------->Internal network (1 vlan)
I wan t to divide ny internal network with multiple VLans. Please suggest me any Good guide how i make a multiple vlans and terminate these on my pix firewall.

    Junaid,
So if you are trying to design a new network and your trying to create some VLAN's, I would look at it as a Tiered approach. So in a tiered approach your Tier1 are your public facing zones, Tier 2 are your application servers, Tier 3 are your database servers, and Tier 4 would be your back end user systems.
If you want to create a DMZ on your firewall you can create a Layer 2 VLAN only on your switch, and assign your firewalls DMZ interface to the switch on this new layer 2 vlan (lets say vlan 100 for example). Now any device you want in this DMZ assign it to VLAN 100 and these devices are now routed through the firewall. The layer 2 VLAN keeps them all in the same network, but the routing exists on the Firewall. Now you can create a management VLAN that will be used for your inside interface on the firewall (lets say vlan 999) as well as all your other networking devices.
Your Tier 2 devices you can number in any manner but using something say in the 200's would
signify these are Tier 2 zones. You can use these for your application servers, jump servers, SNMP management servers, ect... Follow this pattern for each of your zones.
As for the WAN network it was stated above and I second that your VPN solution would probably be better if you used a DMVPN design on your WAN. This would scale better, provide good security, and allow for better management and implementation of you new remote offices.
I am not sure of any single document that I could reference to put all this in place. Most of designing a network comes from a compilation of different documents, corporate policies, architecture standards, and life lessons. If you want a few documents though here are the ones I would recommend:

  • I want to view usage details on my international calling

I have been trying to find out for hours how to change or merge my $10 account with my Swiss International Account (120min for $8/mo.).  Or drop the 1st account and just keep my Swiss account but add 2 other countries (Austria and Italy).  Can this be done?

You can conact live chat and ask them questions though they may push you to the rates page because the information is all there.: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA1170 Skype credit is like paying for 1 hot dog at a set price.  Skype subscriptions are like buying a pack/bulk of hot dogs at a sale price.  You may want a few but you would have to buy the whole pack to get the sale price.  You determine if it's worth it for you and everyone is different.  You can always ask someone what they think but you are the best judge. Usage History (6 months):
https://secure.skype.com/account/usage 1.  Skype credit is used to dial countries from any location so there is nothing to add.  If you want a subscription to cover it you need to determine how many minutes you plan on using in a month in a particular country.  Multiply that by the credit rate and add connection fee charges.  You can then compare that to the subscriptions to see if they are any cheaper.   2.  You can only pick and choose by the available subscriptions that exit to see if they work for you.  You can't create your own personal subscription.  Some subscriptions like Unlimited World, and Europe have mobile and landline versions that support countries that may be on your list.  You can then determine if it's worth it per month vs. just paying credit.  Be aware that no Skype subscription covers special (share-cost), premium, SMS or  non-regional numbers, those all still consume credit. 3.  Credit may still be the best option.  It all depends on how long each call is and how many minutes you consume in that country per month and if those calls are landlines or mobiles. Looking at Austria: Call landlines only60 min, $1.09 per month

  • Want to share some music with another User on my Mac - how?

    Hi everyone,
Here's what I want to do, and any help is appreciated.
My fiancee and I both users on my Mac laptop. Currently, we have our own iTunes library in our respective user folders. She wants some of my songs in her library, and I want a few of hers. I don't want to waste hard drive space, so I am trying to figure out how she can have some of my music in her library without creating duplicate copies on the hard drive. Then I want to be sure the shared songs she likes will upload to her iPod when she tries to sync.
From reading the various entries, I think the solution to this is to have a shared library in a public folder. However, I have a few questions about how this will work.
    1. I don't want to see most of her music in my iTunes, and she doesn't want to see most of mine in hers. Can we control this with a shared library, or will each person see all of the available music?
    2. What will happen when we try to sync our iPods? Will my iPod try to import all of her music that I don't want? Will hers get all of mine, or just the songs she wants?
Thanks in advance for your help...
PS - yes, I did read the article that covers most of this topic, but it didn't answer some of my questions.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

Just in case anyone is having the same issue - since there were no responses to this post, I bit the bullet and copied my iTunes library into our shared folder.
    1. Our libraries stayed the same - nobody's music showed up in the other person's library. If she wants additional music from the shared library, she can just drag it into her iTunes from the shared folder on the finder level.
    2. The iPods behaved exactly as expected - they would only sync to the user they were attached to.

  • How do I sync audiobooks across to my iPhone?

Can anyone tell me how I am supposed to sync audiobooks across to my iPhone?
I have a whole bunch of them, and they are all plain old MP3 files, with a .mp3 file extension, but I have changed the "Media Kind" for them, by selecting File > Get Info, and then choosing the Options tab. Under there, I change Media Kind from "Music" to "Audiobook".
Having done that, they do all show up under the Audiobooks section in iTunes on my Mac.
I have my iPhone set to auto-sync, ie: "Manually manage music and videos" is unchecked.
I have "Sync only checked songs and videos" checked, and the relevant individual audiobooks that I do want to copy across are checked.
I just want a few at a time, so I only have a few checked.
Needless to say, Apple doesn't supply an Audiobook tab when viewing the iPhone settings in iTunes when the iPhone is plugged in.
I have plenty of space left on my iPhone. I do not get any error messages when attempting to sync. iTunes on my mac has no problems locating the files. But still, the audiobooks will not copy across.
The only way I can get them to copy across is to create a playlist for them, copy them from the Audiobooks section into this playlist, then go under the iPhone's settings/preferences when it's plugged in, and check this new playlist that I've created.
Then they will copy across to the iPhone.
But that's a bit of a hack-job. Is there no way to "correctly" copy across an audiobook to an iPhone?
I am running the latest versions of everything:
    Mac OS X 10.5.5
    iTunes 8.0.2
    iPhone OS 2.2.1

    I'm such an idiot...
Well, actually, I'm not entirely to blame on this one...
I just figured out that Apple has buried an "Audiobook playlist" checkbox under the Music tab in the iPhone's settings / preferences.
I didn't have this "playlist" checked.
So even though the individual audiobooks themselves were checked, because the main playlist itself was not, nothing was copying across.
So I'm the fool for not noticing the box wasn't checked — but can you blame me when Apple decides to hide the "Audiobooks" section under the "Music" tab instead of in its own dedicated tab, like they do with "Video", "Podcasts", etc.
Why does "Podcasts" get its own section, but "Audiobooks" doesn't?
How is an audiobook any more like "music" than a podcast is?
    Now where's that rolls-eyes emoticon...?
