Wanted: Advice of Camera Upgrade?

This may not be the most approperiate forum to ask such a question but I'm thinking a lot of people in this community know a lot about cameras...
I've been shooting with an HV40 for a little while now without any major complaints but a new job contract and Boss requires me to take a step or step two closer to an introductory level "prosumer" grade camera, but with a $2-2500 dollar budget it leaves me with few options.
For me it's all about image quality - I don't need any in-camera effects, 10x digital zoom, fancy new native mics etc. Face Detection would be the only "gizmo" that could prove helpful. The content recorded is intended to be edited by both Avid MC and FCP then burn't straight to Blu-ray & DVD.
I'm recording sit down interviews so face detection and the ability to blur out the background behind the talent would really enhance my operation.
I've read a few articles that suggest AVCHD with the right CCDs can achieve superior results to HDV? So with that and the budget in mind so far I've found the:
CANON LEGRIA HFG10 HD CMOS VIDEO 10x
ticks the boxes but after using tapes forever and having HDDs fail/die on me, the switch over to using HDDs for archiving will be very new. Other suggestions have been:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/821133-REG/JVC_GY_HM150U_GY_HM150U_Pr... and the Canon XF100.
I'm all ready to make the jump from tape to Memory cards. Have you had a go with either of those cameras I listed?
It gets a bit confusing for I've been in the 1080/50i world, I don't really know what kind of format will produce the image that will bring me a little bit closer to the prosumer world. I've read that 1920x1080 is full HD and AHCHD 1920 x1080 is a really high quality codec, better than standard HDV.
Which is the best format/codec to shoot documentary style footage? The answer to that will make choosing the right camera a bit easier....
I'd love to hear and receive advice from the users and not just bloggers reviews.
Please fire at me with any advice, opinions for I would really appreciate to hear and receive advice from the users not just bloggers reviews.

If you want to get a shallow DOF then (as David suggested) you might want to look at a DSLR. Note, however, that you will need some accessories (lenses, mics) to go with that. Also note that they are not really the weapon of choice for interviews as they usually have limitations in their continuous recording times (around 10 min).
The Canon XF100 is an excellent camera but you might want to take a look at the Panasonic HMC40 as well.
The Canon HF G10 is also excellent (in its price range) but I'd put it more inside the consumer class than the prosumer class. A direct competitor would be the Panasonic HDC TM900

  • I want to buy or upgrade to CS4

    hello,
when I was in college in 2008, I bought a student edition of CS3.
since then, I've tried each new version of photoshop that has come available, and CS4 is my absolute favorite.
however I'm very confused by this new creative thing where you have to pay every month.
I just want to buy an upgrade to cs4.
is this possible, I don't know how to contact adobe support

You simply can't buy Photoshop CS4 directly from Adobe.
Adobe now only sells perpetual licenses to Photoshop CS6, and subscriptions that will allow you to run Photoshop CS6, Photoshop CC 14.x, and Photoshop CC (2014).
The newest versions of Photoshop aren't really that different from Photoshop CS4, except that they have a lot of new features.  They may require a bit more from your computer system to run.
There is a decently priced subscription program whereby you get use of Lightroom and Photoshop for $9.99/month.  It's worth looking into.

  • FINAL CUT STUDIO WANTS TO PERFORM AN UPGRADE?

Due to an array of problems with OSX (10.4.11), and syndication errors (306) - I've purchased a new hard drive and performed a fresh install using my Install Disk. I then proceeded to download and install all software updates. So far so good... No crashdump errors in the console log. Then... When I went to install Final Cut Studio 2 (the suspected culprit) - the Installer Menu wants to perform an Upgrade... The only problem... There isn't any software to Upgrade... This is a brand new hard drive with a totally clean OS. However... FCS2 is, in fact, installed and malfunctioning (Qmaster) on my other hard drive - leaving crashdump errors in the console log. Can anyone please explain why/how FCS2 would perform an upgrade, and not an Install?
This has been driving me crazy since I bought this computer in October 07
    Please Help!

Apple's Installer looks in the /Library/Receipts folder to see if you have previous versions of an application installed. Normally, you would only see the "Upgrade" option if this were the case.
You might try temporarily disconnecting the other drive to see if Installer offers to do the job properly.
It is probably seeing the receipt for FCP there.

  • How can I format my intell based imac without the original Tiger discs? I have a user account on it that I dont want. I have upgraded to Snow Leopard but I want to to star affresh. Thank you.

How can I format my intell based imac without the original Tiger discs? I have a user account on it that I dont want. I have upgraded to Snow Leopard but I want to to start affresh. Thank you. I have tried loading the Snow Leopard disc whilst holding down th C key but it goes straight into install mode. I am new to Macs and I have inherited this machine.

    Hello, many options...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
    Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

When will ipod touch get a camera upgrade?

We're all just fellow users here and as such have no idea when Apple may release an upgrade to the iPod touch and what such an upgrade might include. Sorry, but we'll all just have to wait until such time as Apple announces something new.

  • I want to buy the upgrade from PS cs5 to PS cs6

I want to buy the upgrade from PS cs5 to PS cs6, where can i buy this? and no, i dont want a cloud subscription...

You can still buy upgrades from this page:  http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/cs6._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software_sl_c reativesuite6.html?promoid=KFPMZ
Click on the Buy link where you can change from Full Version to Upgrade.  You can upgrade from Photoshop CS5 or Extended and it is only available as a download.  I wouldn't buy from a reseller because most of them are taking full advantage of ripping people off by jacking the prices up.  Also, you might not get a working serial number.

  • Advice on camera purchase

A co-worker and myself may have the opportunity to do some filming for several projects. I have access to a Sony HDR-FX1 through my full time job but would like to get a P2 camera if these projects take off. I have heard good things about Panasonic AG-HVX200A but have found the Panasonic AG-HVX205A cheaper online. I read that the 205A is the Japanese imported version of the 200A but records in PAL. Is this correct and will it make a difference in editing in FCP7? I am also open to other suggestions for cameras. I just want one that shoots HD and uses P2 to record and transfer the files. Thanks.

I have just sold my HVX200 (not the A model), and can say that it will shoot 25fps or 50fps for PAL, but it also shoots other framerates like 30fps, 60fps, 24fps etc. Of course, there is a pixel-dimension issue with PAL vs NTSC for standard def, but if you're shooting HD, it shouldn't be an issue. I have to agree that you don't need to consider your acquisition before quality. P2 is supposedly more error-free than consumer grade media (or so I've been told), but I've bought high-quality cards for my new AF100, and have had no problems so far.
But the MAIN thing is (as mentioned), the HVX is VERY noisy (film grain, in case you weren't aware), in low light. By low light, I mean nearly anything indoors where you've not added lights. Church scenes, etc. I found the noise to be unacceptable. However, they supposedly improved that somewhat on the HVX200A.
Sensors can be a major consideration. The HVX does use CCD sensors which differ from CMOS. Because of the way the CMOS sensors expose (down the chip instead of one "global" exposure per frame), flash photography can look weird. So that's a consideration if you'll be shooting next to photographers. And, if your platform is vibrating (say from a helicopter), then you can get odd looks as well. Google "Rolling shutter" and you should find plenty of info on that. But overall, I went with the AF100 with a CMOS and have been very satisfied with it's performance. I also LOVE that I can use my Canon lenses with an adapter too. But that's another story.
You have a lot of research to do, and I feel your pain. I agonized for months over this upgrade. Hard-earned dollars aren't called that for nothing. Good luck!
    Lawrence

  • I just want to install my upgrade...

My company bought ADobe Captivate 6 to upgrade from 5.5.  When I try to install it, it wants the Serial number of my previous product.  Captivate 5.5 came within the larger package that I got.  I need to use this and am getting really tired of trying to install it.  My IT group gave me a Serial Number, but I don't have one specific to Captivate 5.5, it was all a part of the bundle.  I did not install it orginally to my work lap top, but I need the bought and PAID FOR application.

these are the only upgrade paths:  http://www.adobe.com/products/captivate/buying-guide-upgrade.html
you (or your company) may have purchased an inappropriate upgrade.

  • OT where to get good advice on camera purchase?

Sorry this is off topic but perhaps someone here know of the good board for a newbie asking about cameras etc.
I am a video professional but don't know about digital still cameras.

I would love to get a fine Canon SLR but I couldn't justify it. I am balancing between what I want; fine equipment with all the bells and whistles and actually what I need; pull it out of your pocket, point and shoot with enough function to make a video producer happy. I will use it for stills to add into productions I am sure.
    <
Here's the advice I give at least ten times a week to people who think I know what I'm talking about (I don't know anything about consumer cameras—I only follow the Nikon DSLR line—but I'd be buying a stainless steel, splashproof or encased, 3mp, ultrathin unit from Sony because I carry it on bicycle tours.):
Buy the camera's operating software, not megapixels.
Buy the camera's controls, not megapixels.
    Buy glass, not silly features.
Buy the camera's enclosure and accessory lines, not megapixels.
Nikon's older software was insanely useless, it's better now, but compare any camera operation system to Canon, Olympus, HP, Kodak and Pentax. How easily can you review your shots? Do you need to edit in camera?
You need buttons and switches you can find, touch and manipulate. Need to be able to wear gloves? Beware of those stupidly ittybitty thingies.
Look for a good optical zoom range that mimics what you know from 35mm. Digital zoom is worthless.
What do you need for form factor and accessories? Waterproof case, belt clip, external flash, AA batts?
Consumer digital is a marketing jungle; you've got to be able to cut through the marketing BS. (Don't buy megapixels.)
Your budget must include the stuff only a pro thinks about: spare batts, spare charger, extra memory, highspeed reader, protective case, wrist strap, etc.

  • Advice regarding RAM upgrade for Snow Leopard

    Hello Everyone,
I have a 2.4ghz White MacBook (purchased April 2008), with 160GB HD and 2GB RAM (can be upgraded to 4GB RAM as stated in the documentation/specs that came with the computer).
I have installed Snow Leopard and all seems to be running smoothly at this point.
Since Apple has laid the foundation for 64 bit processing with the release of Snow Leopard, looking forward, should I look into upgrading the RAM on my MacBook to 4GB to accomodate future applications that will be written in 64bit? The graphics chip on my computer is an Intel GMA 3100.
Would doing this offer me any benefit? Or should I leave well enough alone?
My goal is to keep this computer for as long as possible, in an updated usable state, and so far I like the Snow Leopard OS.
Which memory cards (or sticks) are the best quality, and are compatible with the MacBook?
Any sound advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks for reading,
    joe

Whatever Apple sells OEM is pretty good stuff. I've never heard of kernel panics or incompatibility problems (duh!). It's usually a "fully branded" module from one of the major DRAM manufacturers like Hynix, Samsung, Elpida, or Micron.
I would note that there was nothing on my factory installed Hynix modules that identified that it was sold or installed by Apple.
One very good alternative (with the Intel chipset models such as yours) is Crucial. I've got a set in my MacBook (late 2007) and it's performed flawlessly. I knew what I was getting and purchased the 4 GB kit from Newegg, but some people insist on purchasing directly from Crucial.com with their compatibility guarantee. I'm sure they pretty much sell the same item. Crucial.com doesn't sell Apple specific laptop memory, but they do cross check it for compatibility.

  • All I want to do is upgrade two phones ... WHY IS THIS SO HARD?  And, WHY CAN'T VERIZON DO THIS???!!!

In the past month, I've spoken to dozens of Verizon reps on the phone, been disconnected a few times, been at 4 different stores, been told several different things by EVERYONE, been told "oh sure, we can do that" only to be told by someone else "no we can't" ... how can you run a business like this??!!!
I AM SO FRUSTRATED RIGHT NOW I COULD SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First, it was because our account was listed as a monthly paid cash account,
then, it was because we were trying to get phones at a franchise store,
then, it was because our account was set up as a business account (according to the Verizon rep I met at Wal-Mart, even though the Vz reps on the phone tell me it's listed as a personal account AND I sign onto our account as a personal account)
then, we were told to order our upgrades on over the phone (but then we were told we would have to pay for the phones and wait for a debit card rebate to be mailed to us, which my husband does not want to do)
then, we were told to order the upgrade phones online, but every time I try I get a processing error,
then, the computer tells us to call a specific phone number if we believe the error was not right,
then, the phone recording message repeats itself through multiple options TWICE and then hangs up on me,
then, I call another Verizon number and get a "helpful" rep who tells me we can order them on the phone ... only to come back to me after being on hold and telling me they have gone home for the day,
then, I try to get help online at Verizon.com and NO ONE IS AVAILABLE TO HELP ME.
I've been to Wal-Mart 3 or 4 times, been to the local franchise store, been to a store in the Chicago area, and have spoken with Verizon reps on the phone until I'm blue, and, still ... STILL ... I don't have new phones.
(removed) ALL I WANT IS TO UPGRADE OUR 2 PHONES ... WHY IS THIS SO HARD???!!!
We have been a Verizon customer for over 16 years, apparently that means NOTHING.

That is because the people who edit the posts are NOT CS agents but instead are people who are employed by the vendor Verizon has contracted to host the forum. I don't even believe they are Verizon employees, but employees of the Jive forum platform.
For example, if a Verizon store had an electrician repairing the lighting in one of their stores, you wouldn't necessarily walk in and expect them to get off their ladder to assist you with information about a phone since they had nothing better to do than to work on the lights.  First of all, they aren't salesmen or CS agents. Second, they may not even have the capability to give you the assistance you are requesting.

  • Advice for people upgrading to iOS4

I hope this little note will be helpful to people doing their first iPhone OS upgrade (maybe a reminder too for some of us who've been round this before).
Apple releases at 10.0 (or thereabouts) in Cupertino. You won't see it before hten anywhere else. If, for example, you're in the UK, that's about 18.00; in most of Europe, 19.00, and so on.
The first couple of days after Apple posts a major iPhone OS update can be a little fraught. The first couple of hours can be very fraught. The servers are loaded to capacity with download requests, and the forums are full of queries and worries. If you see this, read it and maybe it'll make the process a bit smoother.
The 2 key things are: take a backup first, and allow plenty of time.
Backup: most iPhone OS upgrades go OK, but a small proportion don't. Your backup is your safety net in case you are among the unfortunate (very) few. If you have a problem, it'll be painful, but if you have a backup, at least you know you won't lose your data. Use iTunes to do a full backup; make sure you sync your data to wherever you sync it.
Some people don't use iTunes or MobileMe or Gmail or Exchange to sync their contacts, calendar and so on. To those people I say please consider doing this at least once, just to keep your data safe. Once synced, make a backup of the synced data on your computer, again just to be safe. There have been cases where people, as a result of issues in the upgrade, have lost the data - this will help to avoid that.
Allow plenty of time: the download can take a long time. I don't know how bigh OS4 is, but OS3 was around 275MB. The servers will be rammed, and download speeds might be slow. There might also be interruptions in the download. You can use/unplug the phone during the download so don't feel as if you have to sit there watching it. Actually, I'm convinced that, if you watch it, it goes slower, all scientific evidence to the contrary.
The installation takes time: half an hour isn't untypical, sometimes longer. And when that's done, you'll have to sync all your data fresh - if you have a 32GB iPhone full of goodies, that could take a loooong time.
The moral is: *do not try to do this in a hurry*. We've seen many cases where people started the process just before they were about to go somewhere and needed their phone, and then got stuck. Interrupting the upgrade is very likely to cause problems, up to, in the extreme, bricking the phone.
Ideally, wait a few days: the servers are quieter and more reliable, and many common issues will already have been raised and resolved. I know how keen we all are to be early adopters (me included), but it really is more rational to wait (if less fun ).
Some apps may not be completely compatible with iOS4. There will be upgrades but they may not have got into the Store yet. If you have any apps you absolutely depend on, check wth the developer or the Store whether it'll work on iOS4. If you're unlucky in that respet, don't give the developer a hard time - they haven't had that much time to adapt to some very significat changes in the OS.
Finally, if you do run into a problem (and I really hope you don't):
    - Search before posting your problem: there might already be an answer, and having many different threads on the same problem makes it harder for the people looking for answers and for the people trying to help too.
    - Please remember, the people here are users, not Apple employees. If you need help directly from Apple, use the contact info on the support pages to find it. You'll get plenty of help (I hope) from your fellow users here, but please remember everyone's a volunteer, and don't give them (us?) a hard time if you don't get what you're after when you want it.
    - If your iPhone has been subjected to non-Apple-standard software manipulation (i.e. j'broken), *you won't be able to get any help here*. The terms of use of the forums don't allow it.
Remember: *take a backup and allow plenty of time*
OK - that's it. Happy upgrading one and all

Thank you, those instructions are great! My one question is how to make a backup of my backup? I sync through iTunes on a Windows 7 laptop and my contacts and calendar are in Outlook. I'm assuming that this upgrade wouldn't effect anything in Outlook so I'm not worried about that part, but what about my apps? After I run the upgrade I am assuming it will then just sync with iTunes and as long as I haven't done anything stupid, I should be good to go. Is that not a correct assumption? I have upgraded entire operating systems with no trouble, including from Win 95 to XP, XP to Vista, and Vista to 7. After those upgrades, especially 95 to XP, I'm assuming this will be a piece of cake! Anyway, I'll stop rambling here. LOL! Any suggestions on how to actually make a backup of my backup would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
