Wanted: Just A Simple Backup That Regularly Saves Latest Files
Greetings:
Subject line says it all. I'm just looking for a simple backup program that will hourly backup to my external hard drive and flash drive just the latest documents I'm working on in my User folder without having a whole duplicate of that folder on those disks. Maybe the idea's so basic it's overlooked but all my searching can't find any backup software along these lines. I've been told on MacWorld forum it might be possible to use Spotlight and Automation to search and save the latest files but they can't offer any clue how. I'd really be appreciative for any ideas!

When I try to download applications such as Internet Explorer, Yugma, and iTunes in Firefox, I just get a window that says "save" or "cancel", but never one that says "run" so I don't think it's actually installing anything. It shows up in a "download" window, then the icon shows up on my desktop. When I click on it to launch it, it says "open with" and I get the same "save/cancel" window. It's a continuous circle. What am I doing wrong??

Because of how integrated it is with windows IE should work. If it's not working, something more widespread could be wrong with your computer that would also prevent other browsers from working properly. Of course we'd love you to stick with Firefox, but you should get help with IE, too. -
So is there a way to do this using the images right from the camera, where I don't have to crop three different sized images and drag them into the overlays? I can set up an action for each, but cropping the same image 3x is a pain in the ***..!
There are. I did not write you need to learn scripting and write your own scripts. As I wrote most Photoshop will never write a script. However I would write every Photoshop user will at times use a Photoshop script to do some automated process for them.
I wrote the it would be very hard to do what you want to do would a straight Photoshop action. Actions on their own can not use logic. An action would need to to it by brute force.
However in Photoshop CC Adobe added conditional action support. With this support it is now possible to create a group of actions to process some conditions. Like you can separate Landscape from portraits have an Action for processing landscape images and an other for processing portrait images.
Size is still hard to deal with for you can have landscape's the are extremely wide to landscapes that are square and portraits the are extremely narrow to those that are almost square.
Image the extreme aspect ratio will not fill a 8:10 or 5:7 area it resized to 10 and 7 and creating crops the have 8"10 and 5:7 will have images compositions where most of your image content has been discarded.
Camera images do not have extreme aspect ratio the usually have 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratios there are exceptions. When you have print made the are 5x7 and 8x10 by printers the prints you receive from the printers are center crops from your image files.
It is very easy to make center crops if aree images have the same aspect ratio and orientation to begin with. Now with CC you can have seperate actions to the two orientations.
A general solution would need handle arbitrary aspect ratios the resulting center crop may well not have a satisfactory image composition for source image with extreme aspect ratios.
Photoshop ship with several scripts users use all the time to process their image. You may have used some yourself. Do any of these sound familiar to you. Conditional Mode Change, ContactSheetII, Delete All Empty Layers, Export Layers To Files, ExportColorLookupTables, Fit Image, Flatten All Layer Effects, Flatten All Masks, generate, Image Processor, Layer Comps To Files, Layer Comps To PDF, Lens Correct, Load DICOM, Load Files into Stack, Merge To HDR, Photomerge, Script Events Manager and Statistics.
My action package as I wrote contains more the a dozen script I wrote to be used in actions to add logic into the actions.
It would also be extremely easy to create a Photo Collage Template PSD that contains a background layer that has your two frames the 8x10 and 5x7 and also have two alpha channels to map the locations of the images. That can be batch populated with my script BatchPicturePackage.

Window > Arrange and right at the bottom New window for (your file name)
You can drag this across to the second monitor, and work on either window. The results will be reflected in the other window. You can have each window at different zoom levels, so It's a useful trick for seeing an overall result of making a local edit while zoomed in.
Note: if your dual monitor workspace has panels open on the second screen, they will obscure the new window. So you would need to change the workspace back to something like Essentials. -

I'm running CFMX6.1 with all the current updates loaded (...
of that I'm about 99.9% sure...) and I'd like to know:
What exactly is "Save Class Files" for under the CF
Administrator mean?
I know what the blurb by the checkbox says, but I don't
understand the implications of that statement.
Just as a referesher in case anyone forgot the little blurb
says:

development, Macromedia recommends that you do not select this
option."
Here's my problem: we have two CF Servers
(production/development) both running CFMX6.1, and when accessing a
page on the production server, IE is caching it despite our
cache-control template being included (standard template that sets
the cache control meta tags, etc.). When I tried to reproduce this
problem on the development server, I could not. I have IE set to
check for new versions of the page on every visit and still I'm
getting a cached page when I press the back button.
I checked out the CF Administrator and the only difference in
the Caching settings is the lack of a check mark on "Save Class
Files" on the development box.
Could enabling this feature cause page caching like I'm
seeing?

ChrisI'd just like to add that enabling "Save Class Files" in
Production isn't always the best recommendation. (And I personally
think Adobe should change this in the CFAdmin).
The reason being:
As Swathi says, when you have this option enabled, ColdFusion
will load your class files from disk, meaning that after server
restarts ColdFusion doesn't have to recompile your .cfm/.cfc files.
What you need to be aware of however, is that if you are in
the situation where you have a LOT of ColdFusion
files/applications, this adds up to a lot of class files in the
/cfclasses directory. We could be talking thousands, and
potentially even tens of thousands.
Where the problem arises is that when ColdFusion restarts and
looks in /cfclasses, it may not find it and then have to recompile
the ColdFusion file and then save it to disk. This can result in a
lot of disk I/O as well as time spent searching the directory for
the specific file.
In these circumstances you are in fact better leaving the
option disabled as the compile time will actually be quicker than
the File I/O and search. Of course, the best way to find out which
performs best is to test, test and test again.
As an aside, the Save Class Files was a real must for CFMX6.0
because the compiler that was used was ridiculously slow. With
CFMX6.1 the compiler changed dramatically hence why Save Class
Files isn't necessarily the best way to go.
Co-incidentally, Macromedia.com has the option disabled.

Backup NOT Move imovie 08 files
I'm going to use an external drive and use Imoive to move and process my Imovie 08 events however I also want to make a backup copy of my Event files, not the Project files, to a separate external drive in case the main external drive fails. I've used Finder to move the Event files and and the events seem to play fine on the backup external drive.
Will I be able to use these backup Event files to create a new project if necessary? I understand that the original Projects will not be linked to them and would have to be redone.

Copying "Events" using the Finder will "orphan" any projects currently being processed. To prevent this, Event clips must be moved within the running application to update reference pointers. Files/folders copied at the Finder level to an external drive must be in an "iMovie Events" folder at the "root" level of the external drive to be recognized at all and will only be "scanned" during the initialization of the iMovie '08 application as it opens. Thus, it is possible to create/move Event clips externally but only if you plan to manually correct the project "resource" pointers for "active" projects. Personally, I find it saves a lot of time and effort to work within the application and let it take care of such tasks. -
Pages stops responding when I save a file?
Pages just spins when I try to save a file, started after the Maverick update. Any suggestions?
Do this:
1) Close all applications
2) Go to Spotlight (looks like a magnifying glass in the top right of your computer screen.
3) type: Disk Utility, when Disk Utility opens, select the Macintosh HD in the left side of th panel
4) Move your cursor toward the middle, bottom and select, REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS, just let it run until complete.
5) Close Disk Utility
6) Look on Apple's support site for an article to rese PRAM or http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 - Do this as corrected.
7) Then, open Pages
8) If this doesn't work, make sure you have tried different documents, so you can determine if it is document specific
9) Also, see if the behavior is the same with another user on the same computer. -
My iPhone is skipping back to the start of a song every time I unlock it, especially when I am replying to a text message, this is very frustrating and just want to know if it is a simple bug that will be dealt with in the next update?
Assuming the phone isn't jailbroken, the basic steps (as needed) are:
Restart phone (you already did this)
Reset phone
Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup

If your phone is jailbroken, this is the most frequent cause of the problems you described. Restoring could permanently brick the phone.
Note that your iOS is old and the current version is 4.2.8. It's odd that it wasn't updated when your activated your phone in iTunes, being that you got it last Friday. -

Firefox needs to download and save a file before passing it to a plugin.
You can set the Boolean pref <b>browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit</b> to <i>true</i> on the <b>about:config</b> page to remove such files.
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />

I want to get rid of the homepage that I set a while ago that goes directly to MSN news and just go back to the regular firefox search page as a default.

Here's the process to roll back:

Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
Close Firefox 4, and uninstall it. Do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Then finally you can reinstall Firefox 3.6. Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, it should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.

The password is set on the WiFi router providing the service, by the owner of the network to prevent unwanted "guests" accessing the network. The only way to know it is to ask the owner permission to use the network. Otherwise, you have to find a free WiFi hotspot that doesn't require a password.

i have backed up my iphone 5 and have a 5s I want to set up from that backup file. I have gone through the process once, and when I next connect the new AND the old phone to the mac and open itunes, restore or create new phone comes up not synch?? Tried starting the whole process over once but same result. Seems not to recognise the phone and just synch as it should. Help?
