I know what you mean about quality control. However, you may want to try two things before you return it:
1. Rub around the dead pixel. Google this method and you'll find more details. Sometimes the pixels can be restored to life.
2. Put a small piece, or layered pieces, of electrical tape in the battery slot to fill in the gap. I've often done this with my apple laptops and it works perfectly. Once, when I was at the genius bar, the genius commented " Oh, good that you put the tape there and not over here like a lot of people do..." indicating that this is very common.
Should you have to? No, of course not! But if your computer is otherwise good, I would definitely try these potential solutions.
I'm afraid this is what quality control has come to. It's the same throughout the electronics industry and apple is no exception. The only company I've never had an issue with is Sony, but maybe I've just been lucky?

Guy from Apple store in Santa Monica forgot give me receipt. My equipment has problems and i need warranty. I bought Beats Pill speakers on Santa Monica in LA one mounth ago and now im in Poland. What can i do? I need warranty

no they gave me a new 3g 16 gig, i did ask for a 3gs....it is like for like when it comes to replacing....but i think i was pushing my, luck, but im very happy not to have paid the 139 quid, so a happy customer I am, my problem was that i was out of warranty, i did not take out the extra protection warranty ( silly yes, leason learnt... i hope so )
It was the guy who served me who was fantastic, i cannot fault him, he did not have to wave the extra monies, but he said that i seemed genuine, and the fact i did not jail brake my phone or want to, even know he prompted me to as a suggestion , maybe just maybe this all worked in my favour and the result is i have an iphone that works..... Now my issue is with O2 my telco carrier in the UK, as of Nov this year, O2 pay and go customers are in-titled to have there phones unlocked if they have had there phones for more than 12 months. My phone is 15 months old(all with O2) , so an unlock i can get, but because i have a "replacement phone", the imei number is different to what my initial phone was, they are saying i have to wait another 12 months.... I got a SMS message from O2 today that my unlock application was unsuccessful ..... because i have a different IMEI number to which i started with..... just when u think it is easy...WHAM .... so i have to take on O2 now, more phone calls etc...... Any suggestions anyone, has this happened to anyone you know ?

  • Why did the Santa Monica Apple Store Refuse to Replace My 85 watt 'Magnasafe' adapter as per the legal settlement paperwork that was emailed to me???

Went to Apple store in Santa Monica, with "ol Sparky", my faulty 'magnasafe' adapter that came apart at the strain relief...
The "Genius" there, refused to exchange it unless I also brought the computer.  The legal settlement paperwork just said to bring adapter, not the computer.  Store puppet said no deal, come back later.  I asked if there weren't sales records that could be used to facilitate the transaction, since I walked from the Canals to the Store, miles away.  Store puppet said no, handed me my legal notice I recieved via E-mail, and walked away.
Grrr.  6 mile walk for nothin'.  Thanks Apple!
    So, here are my thoughts...
    1.  There IS a sales record, or I would not have gotten a legal notice via email about the settlement.  The guy at the store lied to me.
    2.  The paperwork DOES NOT mention a requirement for bringing in the computer to replace the power adapter.  Guy lied again.
    3.  Apple does not apparently want to fix the problem.  Guy was consistant with this outcome.

You need to bring in both the mac and the adaptor.  You were misinformed, I don't know why the legal notice you recieved didn't mention that.  Read this article: http://www.topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/1456-apple-macbo ok-power-adapter-class-action-settlement- in which it states the following
"If you did not buy a replacement but your MagSafe adapter shows signs of Strain Relief Damage (e.g.; fraying, melting, straining, sparking, weakening, discoloration, bubbling, overheating and/or separation of the Adapter’s strain reliefs) now or in the future, you can claim a free replacement under Apple’s Adapter Replacement Program by taking your adapter and computer to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider or contacting AppleCare. "
Here is also a KB document from Apple that also states "Be sure to bring in the computer used with the adapter; it is required to process potential adapter replacements."  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4127
You can get one, just go back with your mac.  I know this is probably inconvenient (I wouldn't want to carry my mac 6 miles either), but it will resolve your issue.  Good luck

  • The great wall of Santa Monica (awful LTE speeds)

LTE speeds in Santa Monica (90404) are awful:  .1mbps for the last several weeks.   When I drive in I often stream Pandora in my car and it works great... as soon as I get near Santa Monica it's useless.  It wasn't like this month ago?  Did the market get saturated?  Are towers broken?

So glad to hear its not just me. I got fed up and called last weekend. Nobody knew anything to be helpful unfortunately. I went to the Apple store- same deal. Scheduled an appointment at the verizon store. the only therapy was to replace the sim card. However this hasn't had any effect. Now what? make them aware of something they should be able to monitor? It seems like that someone would know something and and executive decision has been made to not fix it...yet. Surprising that an issue could go on for 3-4 weeks and everyone I spoke with was clueless.

  • Lat-long resets to Santa Monica, CA

..all my web apps reset to Santa Monica, CA.
Gas Bag goes to Universal Studios Hollywood. In Maps, I get Santa Monica Pier.
This includes GasBag, Maps, Tides, Geo Numbers.
I actually use these apps.. what is the persistent problem?

I tried uninstall and reinstall, recommended by the "Tides" developer.
I purchased the iTouch 2G at Best Buy: there is a 14-day return for computers and some related items: my purchase was 7 October, 2008. I am running out of time, with all the problems and unanswered questions.
The screen has an annoying spot of dead pixels I can pretend is dirt between the touch screen and the glass.
I am finding the touch screen is non-responsive, or rather intermittent. Maybe my fingertip is too big? Maybe I do not have enough "capacitance" in my fingertip?
But this application simply refused to operate. I have only got it moved over to my locale, once. It allowed me to manually reset the location. It stayed there awhile, after the application was turned OFF. Then "Tides" reverted back to Santa Monica, CA. "Gas Bag" is back to Santa Monica.
"Maps" is back to Hollywood. Today, I got "Maps" back to Point Reyes Station, CA. For how long?
"Tides" would be a great "web app" for me. I sail. I have a kayak here.
iTouch 2G would be a great internet device for me.
I live in a rural place. WiFI is here. Cell phone service is not. I can recharge it in my passenger vehicle.
I don't know anything about Skyhook. I have no information about it. I read their website. I don't think it is here.
There are other useful and reliable "web apps" for the iTouch 2G I have purchased.
However, I cannot spend this much time on a device that is intermittent in performance. I'll take the 15% "restocking fee" and call it quits, until Apple "gets it together" if it "gets it together". Frankly, I don't think I will be back. There is no "quality control".
It cost me this time, to be an "early adopter" but I really thought Apple iTouch having been through 1st Generation was "ready for prime time".
I can purchase the Asus Eee PC with Linux for only a little more.
The main thing for me is I saw Steve Jobs talk on his iPod Touch 2G. And, he said it had internet. I waited. I waited a little more. I made the purchase.
I already have practically non-existent service from prepaid AT&T/Cingular.
I naturally thought I could have VoIP. Maybe with "fring" and IM+ Skype (on another thread, here)? I can't get straight answers. I can get partial answers. I can only find incomplete information.
I have been in and out of iTunes synchronization and backup.
I am reluctant to force a restore. Best Buy may not honor the return, if I get a white screen or a "brick" I have read about. I have had white screens. I think it is time to cashier it out.

  • Santa Monica Apple Store - 4 Day turnaround!

I called and was added to the in store priority list on July 14th. Some stores didn't allow this but they did in Santa Monica. I got my email that it was ready for pick up this morning, made an appt for this afternoon and picked up my 32gb.
Phone is working perfectly once I updated all the apps. No more dropped calls than I had before with my regular 3G - let's face it, it's never been a great device for making phone calls - but it's so much more. Looks, feels, works great and still passable as a phone. SO much better than my old 3G in all respects.

Thanks - though I've had Blackberry curves, palms, and just phones before smartphones existed. All have been better than the iPhone for actual phone calls - regardless of the provider. iPhones are only good "phones" when they are permanently on the edge network and not switching back and forth beteen 3G towers which makes it drop the call where I live 90% of the time. I never keep 3G selected and it's good enough. Like I said it's all of the incredible things BESIDES make phone calls that outweigh that one short coming and make it great for me.

  • HT1349 i want to make a one on one appointment in santa monica

In my ITunes playlist, what do you do when one song is playe,d for the next one to follow? My Itune set-up keeps playing the same song and doesn't skip to the next one.

This method can be used to send messages to everybody in your Address Book.
(Note: this does not work with the Contacts app in Mountain Lion 10.8.)
From the Address Book help file:
Notify contacts when your vCard changes
When you change your contact information, you can send a group email message to your contacts. The message contains your updated vCard and a message from you.
    1. If you don’t have a group of addresses, create one.
    2. Choose File > Send Updates.
    3. In the Send Updates dialog, select one or more groups to notify. If some contacts in the group have multiple email addresses, you can choose which address to use.
    4. Type a subject title and a message, and then click Send.

  • What info do you want about Java i18n?

Although this forum is an excellent resource for quick answers, it isn't always possible for participants to provide detailed solutions. Are there areas of Java i18n that you'd like to read more about, perhaps via a more lengthy technical article on the JDC? What are your suggestions?
    Regards,
    John O'Conner

This may not be what you consider i18n, but
I keep running into time zone problems, most
recently with a customer in Germany. It seems
that sometimes Java/Solaris picks up Daylight
Saving Time correctly and sometimes not. I have
duplicated the German machine's settings on
my machine here in California, but it works correctly
for me. We are using the same JDK exactly. The
machines are not identical otherwise - the customer
has a newer, more powerful Sun.
A discussion of what needs to be done to get time
zones to work consistently and correctly would be
extremely valuable. Could it be a certain level of
JDK (we use 1.3)? Some combination of Solaris
patches? Environment variables to set? I can
set a GMT offset explicitly, but we don't want customers
to have to manually change this twice a year.
By the way, see bug 4177450, which was closed 3
years ago. Users on this forum are still reporting
similar trouble. If this is due to user error rather than
a bug, it's certainly worth a good description of how
    to do it correctly.

  • I want to download Java Script in order to print coupons, but can't seem to make it happen....help would be appreciated!

I am a new Mac/Apple user, trying to download so I can print coupons from a website.  It keeps saying the plug-in is not present, go to the 'apple' on my mac & click on 'software update'.  When I do that, all I get is an update for my HP printer.  This message is coming from a Java website page.  Just not sure what I'm doning incorrectly.

I think I understand the problem, but am not sure of the solution. What you want is Java not JavaScript which is a totally different thing.
Lion is supposed to automatically offer to install Java for you if you try to run a Java applet on your Mac, but you don't have such a thing, yet.
Apple has posted Java for OS X Lion Update 1 here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421, but I don't know whether or not you need to already have Java installed or if this is a complete installation. Go ahead and give it a try as it can't do any harm and it does contain the patches necessary to avoid the problem that Thomas mentioned above. Just remember to turn Java off in your browser when you aren't using it to print your coupons. Once you have it initially installed then Software Update will take care of keeping it up-to-date in the future.

  • Welcome to this forum on "Core J2EE Patterns" by the Sun Java Center

Welcome to this forum on Core J2EE Patterns by the Sun Java Center!
    CONTEXT:
This forum is intended for discussing the patterns from the Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog and other topics discussed in our book, Core J2EE Patterns.
We, the authors of the book, welcome you to this forum.
    WHO WE ARE:
We are Enterprise Java Architects from the Sun Java Center (SJC), which is the Java consulting organization of Sun Microsystems. We are a world-wide group of architects focusing on all consulting related to Java technologies.
Visit our web-site for more information on SJC:
    http://www.sun.com/service/sunps/jdc/index.html
    BACKGROUND:
Over the last few years, we at SJC have worked with our customers in architecting, designing, and implementing solutions on the J2EE platform. We have worked on documenting the J2EE patterns for over two years and released the patterns for public review in Beta form via the Java Developer Connection in May, 2001.
The beta version of the patterns is available online as The Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog at:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2EE/patterns/
Subsequent to the release, we received great feedback and comments from hundreds of reviewers. We then worked towards incorporating the feedback into the pattern documentation. One of the common comments was about the lack of code examples in the online documentation. The latest pattern documentation provides many code examples and incorporates all the feedback received so far.
    BOOK INFORMATION:
Core J2EE Patterns, the book, was released at JavaOne 2001 during June 4-9, and will be available in stores around the end of June 2001.
The book includes the complete updated Sun Java Center J2EE Pattern Catalog with 15 patterns covering these J2EE technologies: Java Server Pages (JSP), Servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), and Java Message Service (JMS). In addition to the J2EE Pattern Catalog, the book also provides other chapters that discuss design considerations,
bad practices, and J2EE Refactorings. Example code is included for all patterns and strategies.

    ---Authors of Core J2EE Patterns

    Rajakannan,
There are numerous ways to implement a templating mechanism in support of the composite view pattern, included in the catalog as a presentation-tier pattern.
The goal is to avoid simply having monolithic views with all the formatting code embedded directly withing the view. If we have common subviews that are shared across several or more views then we end up with a copy-and-paste type of reuse...undesirable. So, modularity is one issue. Another major force when considering the Composite View pattern is that we may want to manage the layout of our pages and the content of our pages separately. We may have some logical regions defined, such as a search panel and main body, and a subview that plugs into those logical regions that map to a physical page (ie: x.jsp and y.jsp). We may then want to vary one independent of the other...ie: we may want to modify the layout of the page w/o changing the content and we may want to vary the content w/o touching the layout.
There are a number of implementation strategies that can be used to implement the Composite View pattern, ranging from relatively simple to much more sophisticated. We describe each in our book and include source code examples.
The example in the book that allows for supporting all the issues described above is implemented using the "Custom Tag View Management Strategy" and uses a tag library written by David Geary, that supports the Composite View pattern. The library is also included in David's new book, Adv. JavaServer Pages, Prentice Hall, 2001.
Again, it's simply one implementation and, as you mention, there are many different ways to implement this strategy.
    Thanks for your question,
    Dan

  • Architect certification for beginners

    Hi Guys,
I want to have a proper TCP(technical career path) for next 5 years. I have experience of 5 years in Java and oracle technologies. Now I am looking for a promising career path- in architect field. I am new to this area. I have done all technical kind of work till date. Now moving to next level will require a lot of study and effort, but I want to put my efforts on a proper certification.
Could you please suggest me few certifications for beginner in technical architect field?
    Thanks,
    Jas

    Hi, welcome to the forum!
There is one Java Architect certification, but it is not a beginner level certification:
It is the Oracle Certified Master, Java EE 5 Enterprise Architect certification: http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=458&get_params=p_track_id:JEE5EA
One idea is to study and take the Java EE Developer certifications first, get enough experience and then later go to the Java EE Architect certification, or go straight to it. The latter approach will take more time, but may be more related to what you want.
