Wanted to restore macbook but cannot reinstall mac osx lion, any help?

tried to reinstall mac os x lion after buying a 2009 macbook air from someone. just wanted to reset the machine to factory settings, but everytime i try the screen says it is temporarily unavailable. anyway to help this problem?

Hi tonysaez,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear exactly when or in what context you are seeing the "temporarily unavailable" message. If you are having issues restoring your Mac to factory settings, you may find the steps outlined in the following articles helpful:

Nope. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD for $29.00 through an Apple retailer or ordering from AppleCare:

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

    Hi
Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

  • TS3926 Unable to reinstall Mac OSX Lion after internet recovery

Sequence of Events on My Macbook Air
    1. I saw a flashing question mark in the morning on starting my macbook air
    2. I then tried the internet recovery of my Macbook air
    3. The system took me to a recovery partition where my only option was reinstall the OSX lion
    4. I tried following the system till the Mac OSX lion disk selection
    5. I do not see any disk to select and hence cannot proceed.
Any pointers? Is my hard disk gone for good?
    Please advice Urgent!!!!

It's possible that the flash storage is damaged, but first, see if it's working properly. After starting in Internet Recovery, open Disk Utility and tell me if you see Macintosh HD in the sidebar. If so, go to Macintosh HD, open Erase tab and erase the disk. Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
If you don't see it, see if the flash storage appears at the top of the sidebar. If so, choose it, go to Erase tab and erase it. Then, reinstall OS X.
If you don't see the flash storage in Disk Utility or your Mac is in warranty, take it to an Apple Store or reseller

  • Cannot reinstall mac osx 10.5.6

Hey guys, I am having a problem reformatting my iMac. I am currently running 10.5.8 on my computer. I inserted the mac osx 10.5.6 install dvd and restarted my computer, holding down the c button until the install screen appeared. After choosing the language, it gave me an error saying that mac osx cannot be installed on this computer. Please help me out as I need to get this resolved ASAP. Thank you in advance!!

Yes, but keep these in mind:
-The $29 Snow Leopard upgrade box is licensed to be used only on a system that has a licensed copy of Leopard on it. So if you buy that, you'll need to buy a Leopard install DVD too to comply with the terms of the license.
-The Snow Leopard Box Set (with iLife and iWork) does not require any previous system to be installed, so you can just reformat with that and be ready to go.
-Even if you choose one of the above two options, it's still a good idea to get a copy of the original install discs, because they include a hardware check utility; and including them when you sell your Mac will help its resale value.

  • Cannot delete Mac OSX partition, need help

    Hi,
I recently checked my storage space on my 256 GB Macbook Pro and realized that I only have 199 GB of total available space.  Checking the Disk Utility, it appears that somehow I ended up with an "Untitled 2" partition that is taking up about 20 GB.  This partition is listed as being "free space", but I cannot delete it or otherwise adjust how much space it is taking up.  I think the partition might have been created when I installed the public Yosemite beta on a separate partition, however, it seems that I did not delete it correctly or something.  How can I restore my hard drive to only having the default "Macintosh HD" and delete the partition to free up space?  Thanks so much for any help.

  • Cannot perform Mac OSX recovery need help

    Morning forum
I am hoping that I can find the help to my issue here as I need this machine up for business. I m having trouble reinstalling the OS as it is stating that it cannot find the system folder (folder with ?). I have tried to perform recovery installation holding down command R and also the other option of holding X down whilst boot up but it seems the keyboard shortcuts are not working or is there a more serious problem. I tied the RAID sets yesterday and all came back all drives seem to be ok. I am baffled as to what I can do. Any help is always appreciated.
    Regards

You have no recovery partition. This is a normal condition if your boot volume is a RAID.
You have several options for reinstalling.
    1. If you have access to a local, unencrypted Time Machine backup volume, and if that volume has a backup of a Mac (not necessarily this one) that was running the same major version of OS X and did have a Recovery partition, then you can boot from the Time Machine volume into Recovery by holding down the option key at the startup chime. Encrypted Time Machine volumes are not bootable, nor are network backups.
    2. If your Mac shipped with OS X 10.7 or later preinstalled, or if it's one of the computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery, you may be able to netboot from an Apple server by holding down the key combination option-R  at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    3. Use Recovery Disk Assistant (RDA) on another Mac running the same major version of OS X as yours to create a bootable USB device. Boot your Mac from the device by holding down the option key at startup.Warning: All existing data on the USB device will be erased when you use RDA.
Once you've booted into Recovery, the OS X Utilities screen will appear. Follow the prompts to reinstall OS X. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
If none of the above choices is open to you, then you'll have to start over from an OS X 10.6.8 installation. There's no need to overwrite your existing boot volume; you can use an external drive. Install 10.6 from the DVD you originally used to upgrade, or that came with the machine. Run Software Update and install all available updates. Log into the App Store with the Apple ID you used to buy 10.7 or later, and download the installer. When you run it, be sure to choose the right drive to install on.

  • HT4718 cant fint a disk to reinstall mac osx lion

After trying to restart my Mac several times, went to the internet option to recover and truing to reinstall mac OS X lion.  However once I click reinstall it asks me for a destination disk but there are none showing up.  Help!

Your drive is either corrupted or has failed.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
If you do not find your drive listed in the Disk Utility sidebar list, then it has failed. If you can complete the above, then restart the computer and see if you can restart properly. If you cannot, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I have an older IMAC running 10.6.8.  No more than 4GB available.  Cox Communication just updated my email service, which requires 10.7 or greater.  I can use my email but cannot attach a document.  Any help?

I have an older Imac running 10.6.8 with 4 GB capacity.  Cox Communications just updated the email service, now I cannot attach a document to an email.  Cox says my operating system not compatible.  Any suggestions?

If Firefox doesn't work, check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.

  • MacBook pro late 2011 i7 8GB 750GB MAC OSX Lion freezes on wake up

    Hi,
My MacBook pro late 2011 i7 8GB 750GB MAC OSX Lion (up to date) 1 week old freezes on wake up.
Plugged on power or not, same issues.
    No apps running.
When it goes to sleep itself i wake it up it freezes for few seconds
When i put it to sleep mode same issue.
    With the lid same issue...
I already try setting up the sleep mode from 3 to 0 with terminal command it didn't work.
Can it be an hardware issue ?
    Any ideas ?

Dear TheSmokeMonster, Dear all MacBook pro 13'' late 2011 users,
    Here is the update.
As TheSmokeMonster mentionned (above) they asked me to reinstall MAC OSX Lion by shutting down the computer and holding cmd + R while switching it off. Then you choose the language and you are good to go for a looooonngg 4GB download (it took me 8hours yeah chinese ADSL :-/ )
Lion reinstalled itself automatically and restarted. - it did not solve the issue.
I called Apple Care again and we try to run the hardware diagnostic by restarting the computer and holding D. FYI do not try it as this command does not work on the new version of macbook pro.
Here is the intersting part! As the Apple Care already did everything they could to help me. We booked an appointment the my local Apple Store in Shanghai (a real one )
The Genius remake again the SMC and PRAM reset - same issues and he also tried to boot Lion from his own external hard drive - Same issues. So we started to think that it was a Hardware problem.
We tried another MBP 13'' late 2011 (last hardware update) in the shop to see if it works properly and it DOESN'T!
Yeah you heard me. I have been trying more than 10 MBP 13'' (2.4Ghz 4GB and 2.8Ghz 4GB) put them asleep and they all freeze on wake up!! it also does it on Mac book air 13'' it seems to be a global issue on all the new 13'' machines. A compatibility problem between Lion and the new hardware architecture of the 13'' ? just my guess.
Anyway FYI this issue doesn't occur on MBP 15 and 17"
I was just amazed by this global problem so was the genuis. We could not find any solutions cause even a replacement one will have the same problem. They told me i could change for a 15" but i had to go back to the Apple shop where i bought it which is 2000Kms away not really convenient So i file the cas and i took my MBP 13'' back with me.
They will contact me later for further explanation.
    To be continued.
